Todd Purdum on Bill Clinton, in the forthcoming Vanity Fair:
"Over the last few years, aides have winced at repeated tabloid reports about Clinton's episodic friendship and occasional dinners out with Belinda Stronach, a twice-divorced billionaire auto-parts heiress and member of the Canadian Parliament 20 years his junior, or at more recent high-end Hollywood dinner-party gossip that Clinton has been seen visiting with the actress Gina Gershon in California. There has been talk of a female friend in Chappaqua, a woman in a bar at a meeting of the Aspen Institute, and a public sighting of Clinton, Bing, and a ravishing entourage in a New York elevator that, a former Clinton aide told me, led a business leader who saw them to say: I don't know what the guy was doing, but it was so clear that it was just no good. None of these wisps of smoke have produced a public fire. But four former Clinton aides told me that, about 18 months ago, one of the president's former assistants, who still advises him on political matters, had heard so many complaints about such reports from Clinton supporters around the country that he felt compelled to try to conduct what one of these aides called an "intervention," because, the aide believed, "Clinton was apparently seeing a lot of women on the road." The would-be intercessor was rebuffed by people around Clinton before ever getting an audience with the former president, and another aide told me that the effort was not well received by either Bill or Hillary Clinton and that some Hillarylanders, in particular, were in denial about the continuing political risks that Bill's behavior might pose."
It's interesting that Purdum and VF are coming out with this piece now, with Hillary Clinton's campaign more or less finished, since this sort of gossip has been in circulation for a while - to the point where if you'd asked me nine months ago to list the major roadblocks to Hillary's near-inevitable nomination, I would have put her husband's possible tomcatting right up there with her Iraq War vote. In the event, the Big He did end up having an impact on the race, but it was public gaffes that mattered, not his private vices. I'm not sure what to make of the lack of coverage on this front: It could suggest that there's vastly more smoke than fire where Clinton's post-Presidential priapism is concerned; it could suggest that Clinton's handlers are really, really good at putting out the fires in question (though it doesn't sound that way from Purdum's piece); or it could suggest a conspiracy of silence on the part of the media, based on the fear that pulling the trigger on such stories could get them accused of gossip-mongering or invading the Clintons' privacy. (If the third possibility is the correct one, it's a pretty remarkable testament to the MSM's ability to keep the lid on a story, even in the age of Drudge and TMZ and Gawker Stalker ...)

Yet plenty of Republicans, conservatives and all-important independents can't stand her, suggesting possible pitfalls for Barack Obama should he make her his vice presidential running mate. The intense dislike for Clinton suggests that besides support from women and others she could bring to the ticket, she might make it harder for Obama to win over some independents, a pivotal swing group in the November election against Republican John McCain. It also means she might push some Republicans and conservatives to vote against the Democrats -- or donate money to the GOP -- who might otherwise lack motivation to do so because of tepid feelings toward McCain.
A substantial 32 percent of independents strongly dislike Clinton, 10 points more than they say so about Obama, according to an AP-Yahoo News poll conducted over the last several months. Independents, a group that both Obama and McCain won during their party primaries this year, comprised a quarter of voters in the 2004 election and have been closely contested in every presidential election since 1992. In addition, 67 percent of Republicans have very unfavorable views of Clinton, 24 percentage points more than feel that way about Obama. Among conservatives the spread is similar -- 58 percent say they feel very negatively about her, 18 points more than they say so about Obama.

And now, journalist Todd Purdum, has written the book, An Idea Whose Time Has Come: Two Presidents, Two Parties, and the Battle for the Civil Rights Act of 1964, that explores the battle in Washington to pass the bill and fleshes out the men and women involved.

"Vanity Fair" national editor Todd Purdum, whose article about Sarah Palin on the 2008 campaign trail eventually served to be a precursor to Palin stepping down as Governor of Alaska that same week, joins "Morning Joe" to comment on the abrupt resignation. He doesn't think his article "caused a rift in the Republican party, it exposed a rift that was already there." He later comments that Palin "is not a politician."

Last week, actress Gina Gershon's lawyers demanded that Vanity Fair retract a story by Todd Purdum that Gershon's counsel claimed insinuates that she and former President Bill Clinton were seeing each other while his wife was campaigning to become the Democratic Party's nominee for president. But Vanity Fair sez no dice. VF spokesperson Beth Kseniak has responded: "Todd Purdum's article does not indicate that former President Bill Clinton had an improper relationship with Gina Gershon. The story merely examines the concerns of some of Clinton's aides about reports of his behavior. We don't believe that any correction is warranted."
So unless someone wants to take this to another very expensive level, perhaps someone should just settle down and submit to the free publicity. Captured by TMZ's cameras last week in New York, and asked about her relationship with Clinton, Gershon refused to comment and instead referred the videographers to her website, ginagershon.com, where you can view her new video "Pretty Girls on Prozac" and purchase her new CD "In Search of Cleo."

Vanity Fair has fired back in response to former president Bill Clinton's criticism of the magazine's piece, which questions his lifestyle choices and association with Hollywood producer Steve Bing, quotes anonymous aides about his increased anger since heart surgery, discusses his financial relationship with billionaire Ron Burkle, and includes reports of concern among his aides about his seeing a lot of women on the road, including actress Gina Gershon.
"In a response of nearly 2,500 words -- a quarter the length of the actual story -- former president Bill Clinton's office fails to address a single factual mistake in Todd Purdum's Vanity Fair article. Purdum, who has covered President Clinton on and off for 16 years beginning with his 1992 presidential campaign when Purdum was with the New York Times, spoke with dozens of current and former senior Clinton aides during the course of his reporting. Purdum also contacted the Clinton office long before the article's completion and had several conversations with staff regarding the president's participation. Vanity Fair stands behind the article and Purdum's reporting."
And now Hillary's Clinton's campaign has apologized for Bill Clinton's remarks about the reporter, calling him a "scumbag and a real slimy guy." Her people apologized for "inappropriate" language. Jay Carson, a spokesman for Hillary Clinton's campaign, said late Monday that "President Clinton was understandably upset about an outrageously unfair article, but the language today was inappropriate and he wishes he had not used it." Meanwhile, Gershon's representative has informed ET: "Todd Purdum's insinuation is a lie and it is irresponsible journalism. We are demanding a retraction."

Todd Stanley Purdum is a national editor and political correspondent for Vanity Fair magazine.
Purdum is a son of Jerry S. Purdum, a Macomb, Illinois insurance broker, investor, and realtor, and Connie Purdum. He was graduated from St. Paul's School in 1978 and from Princeton University in 1982
Until late 2005, Todd Purdum was a reporter and the Los Angeles bureau chief for the New York Times. From 1994 to 1997, Purdum was a White House correspondent for the Times. Purdum is now the national editor for Vanity Fair magazine.
For the July 2008 issue of Vanity Fair, Purdum wrote a scathing article about former President of the United States Bill Clinton entitled "The Comeback Id." The article analyzes Clinton's post-presidency business dealings, behavior, and possible personal indiscretions, citing several anonymous current and former Clinton aides. When asked about the article by Huffington Post writer Mayhill Fowler, Clinton said (in reference to Purdum): "He's a really dishonest reporter...and I haven't read (the article). There's just five or six blatant lies in there. But he's a real slimy guy." When Fowler reminded Clinton that Purdum is married to his former press secretary, he responded: "That's all right - he's still a scumbag" and later added "He's just a dishonest guy - can't help it." Clinton went on to observe: "It's all politics. It's all about the bias of the media for Obama. Don't think anything about it. But I'm telling ya, all it's doing is driving her supporters further and further away - because they know exactly what it is - this has been the most rigged coverage in modern history - and the guy ought to be ashamed of himself. But he has no shame. It isn't the first dishonest piece he's written about me or her." The following day, Jay Carson - a spokesman for Hillary Clinton's presidential campaign - stated that Clinton regretted those remarks, though their factual content remains unchallenged.

William Jefferson "Bill" Clinton (born William Jefferson Blythe III; August 19, 1946) is an American politician who served as the 42nd President of the United States from 1993 to 2001. Inaugurated at age 46, he was the third-youngest president. He took office at the end of the Cold War, and was the first president of the baby boomer generation. Clinton has been described as a New Democrat. Many of his policies have been attributed to a centrist Third Way philosophy of governance.
Born and raised in Arkansas, Clinton became both a student leader and a skilled musician. He is an alumnus of Georgetown University where he was Phi Beta Kappa and earned a Rhodes Scholarship to attend the University of Oxford. He is married to Hillary Rodham Clinton, who has served as the United States Secretary of State since 2009 and was a Senator from New York from 2001 to 2009. Both Clintons received law degrees from Yale Law School, where they met and began dating. As Governor of Arkansas, Clinton overhauled the state's education system, and served as Chair of the National Governors Association.

Last week, actress Gina Gershon's lawyers demanded that Vanity Fair retract a story by Todd Purdum that Gershon's counsel claimed insinuates that she and former President Bill Clinton were seeing each other while his wife was campaigning to become the Democratic Party's nominee for president. But Vanity Fair sez no dice. VF spokesperson Beth Kseniak has responded: "Todd Purdum's article does not indicate that former President Bill Clinton had an improper relationship with Gina Gershon. The story merely examines the concerns of some of Clinton's aides about reports of his behavior. We don't believe that any correction is warranted." There has been talk of a female friend in Chappaqua, a woman in a bar at a meeting of the Aspen Institute, and a public sighting of Clinton, Bing, and a ravishing entourage in a New York elevator that, a former Clinton aide told me, led a business leader who saw them to say: I don't know what the guy was doing, but it was so clear that it was just no good. None of these wisps of smoke have produced a public fire. But four former Clinton aides told me that, about 18 months ago, one of the president's former assistants, who still advises him on political matters, had heard so many complaints about such reports from Clinton supporters around the country that he felt compelled to try to conduct what one of these aides called an "intervention," because, the aide believed, "Clinton was apparently seeing a lot of women on the road." The would-be intercessor was rebuffed by people around Clinton before ever getting an audience with the former president, and another aide told me that the effort was not well received by either Bill or Hillary Clinton and that some Hillarylanders, in particular, were in denial about the continuing political risks that Bill's behavior might pose."
It's interesting that Purdum and VF are coming out with this piece now, with Hillary Clinton's campaign more or less finished, since this sort of gossip has been in circulation for a while - to the point where if you'd asked me nine months ago to list the major roadblocks to Hillary's near-inevitable nomination, I would have put her husband's possible tomcatting right up there with her Iraq War vote. In the event, the Big He did end up having an impact on the race, but it was public gaffes that mattered, not his private vices. I'm not sure what to make of the lack of coverage on this front: It could suggest that there's vastly more smoke than fire where Clinton's post-Presidential priapism is concerned; it could suggest that Clinton's handlers are really, really good at putting out the fires in question (though it doesn't sound that way from Purdum's piece); or it could suggest a conspiracy of silence on the part of the media, based on the fear that pulling the trigger on such stories could get them accused of gossip-mongering or invading the Clintons' privacy. (If the third possibility is the correct one, it's a pretty remarkable testament to the MSM's ability to keep the lid on a story, even in the age of Drudge and TMZ and Gawker Stalker ...)

Last week, actress Gina Gershon's lawyers demanded that Vanity Fair retract a story by Todd Purdum that Gershon's counsel claimed insinuates that she and former President Bill Clinton were seeing each other while his wife was campaigning to become the Democratic Party's nominee for president. But Vanity Fair sez no dice. VF spokesperson Beth Kseniak has responded: "Todd Purdum's article does not indicate that former President Bill Clinton had an improper relationship with Gina Gershon. The story merely examines the concerns of some of Clinton's aides about reports of his behavior. We don't believe that any correction is warranted."
So unless someone wants to take this to another very expensive level, perhaps someone should just settle down and submit to the free publicity. Captured by TMZ's cameras last week in New York, and asked about her relationship with Clinton, Gershon refused to comment and instead referred the videographers to her website, ginagershon.com, where you can view her new video "Pretty Girls on Prozac" and purchase her new CD "In Search of Cleo."

Vanity Fair has fired back in response to former president Bill Clinton's criticism of the magazine's piece, which questions his lifestyle choices and association with Hollywood producer Steve Bing, quotes anonymous aides about his increased anger since heart surgery, discusses his financial relationship with billionaire Ron Burkle, and includes reports of concern among his aides about his seeing a lot of women on the road, including actress Gina Gershon.
"In a response of nearly 2,500 words -- a quarter the length of the actual story -- former president Bill Clinton's office fails to address a single factual mistake in Todd Purdum's Vanity Fair article. Purdum, who has covered President Clinton on and off for 16 years beginning with his 1992 presidential campaign when Purdum was with the New York Times, spoke with dozens of current and former senior Clinton aides during the course of his reporting. Purdum also contacted the Clinton office long before the article's completion and had several conversations with staff regarding the president's participation. Vanity Fair stands behind the article and Purdum's reporting."
And now Hillary's Clinton's campaign has apologized for Bill Clinton's remarks about the reporter, calling him a "scumbag and a real slimy guy." Her people apologized for "inappropriate" language. Jay Carson, a spokesman for Hillary Clinton's campaign, said late Monday that "President Clinton was understandably upset about an outrageously unfair article, but the language today was inappropriate and he wishes he had not used it." Lots of Democrats love Hillary Rodham Clinton. Yet plenty of Republicans, conservatives and all-important independents can't stand her, suggesting possible pitfalls for Barack Obama should he make her his vice presidential running mate. The intense dislike for Clinton suggests that besides support from women and others she could bring to the ticket, she might make it harder for Obama to win over some independents, a pivotal swing group in the November election against Republican John McCain. It also means she might push some Republicans and conservatives to vote against the Democrats -- or donate money to the GOP -- who might otherwise lack motivation to do so because of tepid feelings toward McCain.
A substantial 32 percent of independents strongly dislike Clinton, 10 points more than they say so about Obama, according to an AP-Yahoo News poll conducted over the last several months. Independents, a group that both Obama and McCain won during their party primaries this year, comprised a quarter of voters in the 2004 election and have been closely contested in every presidential election since 1992.
In addition, 67 percent of Republicans have very unfavorable views of Clinton, 24 percentage points more than feel that way about Obama. Among conservatives the spread is similar -- 58 percent say they feel very negatively about her, 18 points more than they say so about Obama.
