Melbourne Airport (IATA: MEL, ICAO: YMML), also known as Tullamarine Airport, is the primary airport serving the city of Melbourne, and the second busiest airport in Australia. It was opened in 1970 to replace the nearby Essendon Airport. Melbourne Airport is the sole international airport of the four airports serving the Melbourne metropolitan area.

The airport is 23 km (14 mi) from the city centre. The airport has its own postcode—Melbourne Airport, Victoria (postcode 3045). This is adjacent to the suburb of Tullamarine.

The Melbourne–Sydney air route is the third most-travelled passenger air route in the world and the third busiest in the Asia Pacific region. The airport features direct flights to 33 domestic destinations of Australia in addition to destinations in the Pacific, London, Asia and North America. Melbourne Airport is the number one arrival/departure point for the airports of four of Australia's seven other capital cities. Melbourne serves as a major hub for Qantas and Virgin Australia, while Jetstar Airways and Tiger Airways Australia utilise the airport as home base. Despite the number of passengers, staff, and visitors of such a busy airport there remains no rail link from the airport to the city centre or into the V/Line network, unlike most first world airports, the only public transport option is a regular coach service. Melbourne is the busiest airport for international export freight as of August 2011, while second busiest for import freight. Domestically, Melbourne serves as headquarters for Australian air Express and Toll Priority and handles more domestic freight than any other airport in the nation.

Melbourne

Melbourne (/ˈmɛlbərn/, AU ⁱ/ˈmɛlbən/) is the capital and most populous city in the Australian state of Victoria, and the second most populous city in Australia and Oceania. The name "Melbourne" refers to the area of urban agglomeration (as well as a census statistical division) spanning 9,900 km² (3,800 sq mi) which comprises the broader metropolitan area, as well as being the common name for its city centre. The metropolis is located on the large natural bay of Port Phillip and expands into the hinterlands towards the Dandenong and Macedon mountain ranges, Mornington Peninsula and Yarra Valley. Melbourne consists of 31 municipalities. It has a population of 4,347,955 as of 2013, and its inhabitants are called Melburnians.

Founded by free settlers from the British Crown colony of Van Diemen's Land on 30 August 1835, in what was then the colony of New South Wales, it was incorporated as a Crown settlement in 1837. It was named "Melbourne" by the Governor of New South Wales, Sir Richard Bourke, in honour of the British Prime Minister of the day, William Lamb, 2nd Viscount Melbourne. It was officially declared a city by Queen Victoria in 1847, after which it became the capital of the newly founded colony of Victoria in 1851. During the Victorian gold rush of the 1850s, it was transformed into one of the world's largest and wealthiest cities. After the federation of Australia in 1901, it served as the nation's interim seat of government until 1927.

Featuring - A320s, A330s, A350s, A380s, B747s, B767s, B777s, BD700s & A C-130! The biggest highlight of spring was at the very end, Beijing Capital Airlines' new route between Shenyang, Qingdao and Melbourne. After confirming flights earlier this year, the wait began before we'd start seeing them on aussie soil. Although their livery has a few mixed opinions, I think it's a stunner!! The Inaugural arrival seen here - 02:09 Solomon Airlines' quick and out of the blue charter flight down here was a pleasant surprise and fantastic movement for the month. Lacking variety from the usual Tigerair and Jetstar A320s, having something a little different was fantastic! Solomon Airlines arrival seen here - 07:21 The RAAF always like to pay YMML a quick visit every so often, fortunately their quick visit lined up with the morning I was out and about spotting. Sending down a C-130 for a quick hour lay-over made it that much more special as the C-130s are fairly rare at Melbourne (Much more rare then the C17s) Seen departing from close-up at - 10:29 Towards the end of August, VH-OEJ (Ex Wunala Dreaming) came home wearing a new livery, supporting the RIO 2016 Olympics. Having come a few times throughout the month, it was great to get a chance to see her in her new colours and supporting the aussies!! Arrival seen here - 06:40 Departure seen here - 20:54 September was a great month for Melbourne Airport in general, lots of announcements, confirmations and movements. As far as the announcements and confirmations that we have to look forward to are - - Qantas's confirmation on starting flights to Tokyo from Melbourne, starting as early as the end of 2016 and eventually taking over the existing JQ flights to there. - Confirmation from Cathay Pacific to start sending Melbourne both A350's and B777s early next year. - Hainan Airlines announcement about starting flights between Changsha and Melbourne using A330s starting as early as November the 9th 2016! - Extra flights from Tigerair Australia over summer Between Melbourne to Hobart, Coolangatta & Cairns. - Virgin Australia's 777s returning to Melbourne on the Los Angeles flights as early as next year! - Air India announcing a frequency upgrade for both Melbourne and Sydney from 3x weekly (Melbourne) and 4x weekly (Sydney) to both 5x weekly. Including - B747s, B777s, A330s, A350s, A380s and an AN124! August has been a fantastic month with 2 huge highlights! With the final month of winter down, bring on those longer days and much better weather! The biggest highlight for this month was really hard to decide, however I went with the AN124. After half a decade of an Antonov drought, finally another came around, picking up a jet engine to delivery to a broken down Jetstar in Guam. The Antonov at Melbourne has always been a rare occasion so having the privilege to go out and catch one was fantastic! Seen here - 07:25 The next huge highlight of the month was somewhat unexpected until August had actually started - Singapore's A350s! Originally meant to start in September, SQ pushed the starting date up to early August. Although only temporary, SQs A350s will go down in history as Melbourne's first A350 & Australia's second! The Inaugural flight seen here - 19:50 Another catch of it - 17:32 August was also the final month of Indonesia AirAsia X's services, whilst it's always sad to see them leave even though their loads were fairly consistent, hopefully it'll open up a few options for a couple more airlines who are interested as the demand is there! Another month down in 2016, bringing a few special flights and 1 particular up-gauge I'm really pleased about with it. April has been a fantastic month all together. Some of the key highlights to this month were: Qantas's up-gauge on the Melbourne - Hong Kong route. They have now begun sending Melbourne 3x weekly 747s to replace a few of the usual A330's. I couldn't be happier to see the Qantas 747 become a lot more common. (00:00) is the inaugural 747 service in some gorgeous morning lighting. Another highlight was the Royal New Zealand Air Force 757, popping over to Melbourne one afternoon for ANZAC day. 757s in Australia are a very rare sight, so grab then when you can! A highlight for me was catching the Skytrader's A319. It's always seemed to dodge my efforts in catching it. Although it is seen in Melbourne often, it's not an easy one to catch unless you come prepared. The RAAF Beech B300 Super King Air was an unexpected surprise. I just happened to be at the right place at the right time. Melbourne doesn't see much variety with Turbo-props. The usual Saab 340, Q400 and the occasional ATR-72 are the only year round Turbo-props we see, so this was definitely a unique catch!
