Cartoonist and columnist Ted Rall deconstructs New York Times TV critic Alessandra Stanley's review of "Oliver Stone's Untold History of the United States"
Hey guys! As I'm sure you all have heard by now, the New York Times is catching a lot of heat for an offensive article written by their chief television critic, Alessandra Stanley. With the incendiary term 'Angry Black Woman' in the title, Stanley's piece centered around the upcoming show 'How To Get Away With Murder,' starring Viola Davis and produced by successful television writer Shonda Rhimes, and referenced numerous offensive stereotypes with regards to Black women (including the aforementioned 'Angry Black Woman' trope). When the backlash hit, Stanley responded defensively, stating the 'Twittersphere' did not properly assess her piece (stating it was not offensive once you got past 'the first 140 characters') and that she was known for using inflammatory statements in her work. Sh...

One doesn't need to look far to see backlash against The New York Times over its profile of writer and producer Shonda Rhimes published Wednesday. There were plenty of critical headlines. The article itself, penned by TV critic Alessandra Stanley, praises Rhimes’ work on “Scandal,” “Grey’s Anatomy” and “How to Get Away with Murder." But that's been largely overlooked, mainly because Stanley led the piece by suggesting Rhimes call her autobiography, “How to Get Away With Being an Angry Black Woman.” Rhimes herself took issue with the article's description of her as "angry" and a romance writer. On Twitter, she seemed, well, pretty annoyed with it. And Vulture’s Margaret Lyons calls the Times story, “inaccurate, tone-deaf, muddled and racist,” then tears into Stanley's article paragraph b...

In a widely panned review of How to Get Away With Murder, the new ABC series which stars Viola Davis as a criminal defense lawyer and law professor, The New York Times' Alessandra Stanley tried to take down EP Shonda Rhimes. In the process, the TV critic also offended Davis by comparing her to lighter-skinned African American stars. "The actress doesn't look at all like the typical star of a network drama," Stanley wrote in her review, which spawned several think pieces. "Ignoring the narrow beauty standards some African-American women are held to, Rhimes chose a performer who is older, darker-skinned and less classically beautiful than [Kerry Washington], or for that matter Halle Berry, who played an astronaut on the summer mini-series Extant." Davis seemingly replied via Twitter, writing...
