Many contemporary historians and schoolbooks portray the Middle Ages as a time of poverty, backwardness, and religious arbitrariness, from which the people were freed only by the Renaissance and later the Industrial Revolution. Uploaded by MILITARY HISTORY 2015. A look at the Military History of Medieval and Stone Ages Weapons. We searches museums and private collections for weird and unlikely weapons, then introduces them to our combat team to find out how they were used. We try out a Francisca, the throwing axe that gave the Franks their name; see how armored knights used a ball and chain; and learn the uses of the gruesome awl-pike, bizarre military fork, and the Guisarme, an extremely popular polearm. We also test strange axes like the Lochaber, Doloire, and Waggoner's Axe.
Part 2 starts at 20:54 and introduces us to Stone-Age weapons--flint or bone hand-axes, spears, bows, and slingshots--and shows us how to make them and how to fire-harden wooden spears. Paleontologists and ethnographers help us examine the weapons of primitive societies that have survived into our own time--assegais (slender hardwood spears), blowpipes, footbows, and boomerangs.
Much of what we know of ancient history is the history of militaries: their conquests, their movements, and their technological innovations. There are many reasons for this. Kingdoms and empires, the central units of control in the ancient world, could only be maintained through military force. Due to limited agricultural ability, there were relatively few areas that could support large communities, so fighting was common.
Weapons and armor, designed to be sturdy, tended to last longer than other artifacts, and thus a great deal of surviving artifacts recovered tend to fall in this category as they are more likely to survive. Weapons and armor were also mass-produced to a scale that makes them quite plentiful throughout history, and thus more likely to be found in archaeological digs.

The Middle Ages (adjectival form: medieval, mediaeval or mediæval) is a period of European history encompassing the 5th to the 15th centuries. It is normally marked from the collapse of the Western Roman Empire, accepted as the end of Classical Antiquity, until the beginning of the Renaissance and Age of Discovery, which ushered in the Modern Era. It is thus the middle period of the traditional division of Western history into Classical, Medieval, and Modern. The Middle Ages is often split into two or three sub-divisions.
In the Early Middle Ages, depopulation, deurbanization, and barbarian invasion, all of which had begun in Late Antiquity, continued apace. The barbarian invaders formed their own new kingdoms in the remains of the Western Roman Empire. In the 7th century North Africa and the Middle East, once part of the eastern empire, became an Islamic Empire after conquest by Muhammad's successors. Although there were substantial changes in society and political structures, the break was not as extreme as once put forth by historians, with most of the new kingdoms incorporating as many of the existing Roman institutions as they could. Christianity expanded in western Europe and monasteries were founded. In the 7th and 8th centuries the Franks, under the Carolingian dynasty, established an empire covering much of western Europe; it lasted until the 9th century, when it succumbed to pressure from new invaders – the Vikings, Magyars, and Saracens.

Uploaded by MILITARY HISTORY 2015. A look at the Military History of Medieval and Stone Ages Weapons. We searches museums and private collections for weird and unlikely weapons, then introduces them to our combat team to find out how they were used. We try out a Francisca, the throwing axe that gave the Franks their name; see how armored knights used a ball and chain; and learn the uses of the gruesome awl-pike, bizarre military fork, and the Guisarme, an extremely popular polearm. We also test strange axes like the Lochaber, Doloire, and Waggoner's Axe. Part 2 starts at 20:54 and introduces us to Stone-Age weapons--flint or bone hand-axes, spears, bows, and slingshots--and shows us how to make them and how to fire-harden wooden spears. Paleontologists and ethnographers help us examine the weapons of primitive societies that have survived into our own time--assegais (slender hardwood spears), blowpipes, footbows, and boomerangs. Much of what we know of ancient history is the history of militaries: their conquests, their movements, and their technological innovations. There are many reasons for this. Kingdoms and empires, the central units of control in the ancient world, could only be maintained through military force. Due to limited agricultural ability, there were relatively few areas that could support large communities, so fighting was common. Weapons and armor, designed to be sturdy, tended to last longer than other artifacts, and thus a great deal of surviving artifacts recovered tend to fall in this category as they are more likely to survive. Weapons and armor were also mass-produced to a scale that makes them quite plentiful throughout history, and thus more likely to be found in archaeological digs. -

Castles: The Magnificence Of the Medieval Era - History Documentary Films.
A castle is a kind of fortified structure constructed in Europe and the Middle East during the Middle Ages by nobility. Over the approximately 900 years that castles were constructed, they took on a great lots of kinds with several different features, although some, such as drape wall surfaces and arrowslits, were commonplace.
A European development, castles come from the 9th and 10th centuries, after the fall of the Carolingian Empire led to its region being separated amongst individual lords and royal princes. These nobles developed castles to control the area promptly bordering them, and were both protective and offending frameworks; they offered a base where raids can be launched as well as security from enemies. Their armed forces sources are often stressed in castle studies, the frameworks additionally offered as centres of management and symbols of power. Urban castles were made use of to manage the neighborhood population and essential travel paths, and country castles were often situated near features that were essential to life in the area, such as factories and abundant land.

Uploaded by MILITARY HISTORY 2015. A look at the Military History of Medieval and Stone Ages Weapons. We searches museums and private collections for weird and unlikely weapons, then introduces them to our combat team to find out how they were used. We try out a Francisca, the throwing axe that gave the Franks their name; see how armored knights used a ball and chain; and learn the uses of the gruesome awl-pike, bizarre military fork, and the Guisarme, an extremely popular polearm. We also test strange axes like the Lochaber, Doloire, and Waggoner's Axe.
Part 2 starts at 20:54 and introduces us to Stone-Age weapons--flint or bone hand-axes, spears, bows, and slingshots--and shows us how to make them and how to fire-harden wooden spears. Paleontologists and ethnographers help us examine the weapons of primitive societies that have survived into our own time--assegais (slender hardwood spears), blowpipes, footbows, and boomerangs.
Much of what we know of ancient history is the history of militaries: their conquests, their movements, and their technological innovations. There are many reasons for this. Kingdoms and empires, the central units of control in the ancient world, could only be maintained through military force. Due to limited agricultural ability, there were relatively few areas that could support large communities, so fighting was common.
Weapons and armor, designed to be sturdy, tended to last longer than other artifacts, and thus a great deal of surviving artifacts recovered tend to fall in this category as they are more likely to survive. Weapons and armor were also mass-produced to a scale that makes them quite plentiful throughout history, and thus more likely to be found in archaeological digs.

During the medieval times torture was used frequently, even if there was very little evidence against a suspected criminal they would be brutally tortured in order to confess. The rat torture would truly be a horrific way to die, being sawed in half or even watching someone else been sawed would also have been extremely traumatic, The racks main aim was to completely torture the victim mentally and physically into confessing, and since no one would be around the help the victim after being stretched the pain must have been indescribable. The head crusher was also equally brutal, but for me the one that really makes me cringe is the toe wedging! I cannot imagine how the victim would have felt during that torture!

In this programme, they go back to medieval England to live the life of a Lord and Lady in their country manor.
Starting life in 1066, Giles takes on the guise of a Norman conqueror, complete with broadsword and chainmail. Sue wears pointy hats and is a damsel in deep distress, as Giles has been given her manor house and all the lands around it. He is also on a mission to woo her.
Taking on the role of 100 servants is Michelin-starred chef and Anglo-Saxon lookalike Martin Blunos. During the week, he prepares the most sumptuous of meals including cockentrice - a creation made from the forepart of a chicken sewn to the rear of a piglet.
The Supersizers are advised by their doctor that food must be prepared to balance their four humours, so Sue and Giles discover if they are phlegmatic (sluggish and dull), melancholic (sad), choleric (bad-tempered) or sanguine (sexy and laid-back).
During an exhausting week, Giles becomes a chivalrous knight and goes off to experience the food of a crusader. Sue learns to play the harp, has visions, and samples medieval dating food. Together they try out falconry, go on a Chaucerian pilgrimage and dine with historian Colin Spencer and broadcaster Michael Portillo, discovering how the Magna Carta affected what could and couldn't be eaten.
At the end of a week that covers nearly 400 years of medieval history, the intrepid Supersizers have a full-blown banquet with more than 20 guests, a contortionist, a fire-breather and musicians, while a trumpet fanfare heralds the arrival of Martin's fabulous feast, which includes peacock, coqz heaumez (helmeted cock), suckling pig, boar's head and hippocras.
