On 1-4-13, a MBTA detour extra heads east at Groton-Harvard Rd. in Ayer,MA. These detour trains were operated due to emergency repairs on the Grand Junction branch. This days move was the only move to be led by Amtrak equipment.

When I was 13, Uncle John in Indiana sent me a Super 8 movie camera. I decided to venture out and get a closer look at the B&M;. I found a big hole in the fence at Fort Devens (near the freight yard on the branch that headed south) to get this Army Brat and his bananna-seated, purple bicycle through. That gave me a shortcut (that no doubt was used by GI's) wiithout going out the back gate. Up until then, I could only intently view the B&M; from the school bus or from the window of our family station wagon.The passenger station that sat near the tower had been razed and had a USO on the same property. I ventured in the tower once only to be told I could not be there. It wasn't like back in Indiana.
Most of the activity was on the east-west mainline. And though the B&M; was bankrupt, it was still quite a show with three or four "Blue Bird" GP9s that powered through freights and plenty of maroon "Minute Man" GP7s and RS3s. (Note that one is so faded, it is yellow. Some of the RS3s were painted blue, but I don't recall any of the GP7s painted blue at this time.) The RDCs from Boston only ran as far west as Ayer and were parked on the other end of town near the packing plant on the weekends. The newest locos the B&M; had in 1971 were GP18s, which I rarely saw. ( I suppose there just weren't very many, and I didn't get a chance to railfan much.) I remember once seeing a coal train with Penn Central GP38s that was headed to a power plant in New Hampshire, I'm told. I only saw B&M; F units on two occasions, one A and one B.
The wreck train pictured had stopped at Ayer, Holloween Day 1971, to position the wrecker on the front of the train so it could tend to a derailment at Leominster up the line. Even as a 13-year-old, I really could appreciate those ancient wooden passenger cars in the consist, especially the open platfrom car with truss rods!
Some of the footage is of my cab ride on GP7 1576. To this day I am not sure what I did with my bike as I remember being worried about leaving it behind. I actually think the brakeman may have put it on the running board of the locomotive! I recall when we ran out to the other end of town where the RDCs were parked, the engineer had made a comment about not wanting to leave the "buggy" (B&M; caboose) out there. We also switched the yard in Devens.
If anyone recognizes any of the railroaders pictured, please let us know. It's been 44 years now, so I suppose most of those guys are gone now. I regret the quality of the footage, but it had been copied to a VCR tape and then copied in digital form. The camera had a manual liight setting and no focus.

Ayer, Massachusetts
Ayer is a town in Middlesex County, Massachusetts, United States. Originally part of Groton, it was incorporated February 14, 1871 and became a major commercial railroad junction. The town was home to Camp Stevens, a training camp for Massachusetts volunteers during the American Civil War. Later, Fort Devens was established by the federal government to train New England soldiers for World War I. Fort Devens was a major influence in the area until its closure in 1994. The town's population was 7,427 at the 2010 census.

History
Founding
Ayer's history dates back to 1667, when the first mill in the agricultural community was built. The settlement sits on what the Nipmuc Indians called Nainacocius. A brook remains with that name. Originally part of Groton, the community was initially called Groton Junction or South Groton. The town of Ayer was incorporated in 1871, and was named in honor of Dr. James Cook Ayer, a prominent resident of Lowell who provided the funding for the construction of the Town Hall.

When I was 13, Uncle John in Indiana sent me a Super 8 movie camera. I decided to venture out and get a closer look at the B&M;. I found a big hole in the fence at Fort Devens (near the freight yard on the branch that headed south) to get this Army Brat and his bananna-seated, purple bicycle through. That gave me a shortcut (that no doubt was used by GI's) wiithout going out the back gate. Up until then, I could only intently view the B&M; from the school bus or from the window of our family station wagon.The passenger station that sat near the tower had been razed and had a USO on the same property. I ventured in the tower once only to be told I could not be there. It wasn't like back in Indiana. Most of the activity was on the east-west mainline. And though the B&M; was bankrupt, it was still quite a show with three or four "Blue Bird" GP9s that powered through freights and plenty of maroon "Minute Man" GP7s and RS3s. (Note that one is so faded, it is yellow. Some of the RS3s were painted blue, but I don't recall any of the GP7s painted blue at this time.) The RDCs from Boston only ran as far west as Ayer and were parked on the other end of town near the packing plant on the weekends. The newest locos the B&M; had in 1971 were GP18s, which I rarely saw. ( I suppose there just weren't very many, and I didn't get a chance to railfan much.) I remember once seeing a coal train with Penn Central GP38s that was headed to a power plant in New Hampshire, I'm told. I only saw B&M; F units on two occasions, one A and one B.
The wreck train pictured had stopped at Ayer, Holloween Day 1971, to position the wrecker on the front of the train so it could tend to a derailment at Leominster up the line. Even as a 13-year-old, I really could appreciate those ancient wooden passenger cars in the consist, especially the open platfrom car with truss rods!
Some of the footage is of my cab ride on GP7 1576. To this day I am not sure what I did with my bike as I remember being worried about leaving it behind. When I was 13, Uncle John in Indiana sent me a Super 8 movie camera. I decided to venture out and get a closer look at the B&M;. I found a big hole in the fence at Fort Devens (near the freight yard on the branch that headed south) to get this Army Brat and his bananna-seated, purple bicycle through. That gave me a shortcut (that no doubt was used by GI's) wiithout going out the back gate. Up until then, I could only intently view the B&M; from the school bus or from the window of our family station wagon.The passenger station that sat near the tower had been razed and had a USO on the same property. I ventured in the tower once only to be told I could not be there. It wasn't like back in Indiana.
Most of the activity was on the east-west mainline. And though the B&M; was bankrupt, it was still quite a show with three or four "Blue Bird" GP9s that powered through freights and plenty of maroon "Minute Man" GP7s and RS3s. (Note that one is so faded, it is yellow. Some of the RS3s were painted blue, but I don't recall any of the GP7s painted blue at this time.) Date: March 26, 2013; Taken with an iPhone 4S This particular loaded coal train originally had NS 8102, the Pennsylvania Railroad heritage unit on it, at least as far as Ayer, Massachusetts. It was cut off and sent to Worcester, MA for the Providence and Worcester's semi-private expo and left the coal train with only two locomotives. When it finally arrived in New Hampshire, I was surprised to find that one of the Helm Leasing SD40-2s currently on lease by Pan Am had been put on, but I sure wasn't complaining! Railfanning on 3-9-14
Yesterday i had a chance to railfan the eastern part of Massachusetts for the first time. I spent most of the day in Ayer. Got there at about 5:30am and a few minutes later, the local came in with an NS unit. As the sun came up, i was greeted with an MBTA train and westbound train POED comes into the picture with a Union Pacific SD70 ACe leading. After a few more commuter trains, POSE makes his way off of the Worcester Main. The last 2 trains i saw that went through Ayer were a westbound commuter and then the MBTA Test Train which was a nice catch. Next stop was Amtrak's Northeast Corridor. Now mind you, i'm used to seeing only Amtrak's Lakeshore Limited that does only 60mph. Decent amount of action at the Attleboro station. This particular loaded coal train originally had NS 8102, the Pennsylvania Railroad heritage unit on it, at least as far as Ayer, Massachusetts. It was cut off and sent to Worcester, MA for the Providence and Worcester's semi-private expo and left the coal train with only two locomotives. When it finally arrived in New Hampshire, I was surprised to find that one of the Helm Leasing SD40-2s currently on lease by Pan Am had been put on, but I sure wasn't complaining! I grew up watching Conrail SD40-2s, SD50s and C36-7s on these very rails, and this SD40-2, now considered rare on the Northern Mainline was a welcome break from the constant stream of wide-cab EMDs and GEs.
1456: I originally intended to catch the train at Winston Street, but by the time I got as far south as Granite Street, he was already coming through town. A ridiculously slow red light and traffic prevented me from back tracking fast enough to catch the train at Commercial Street, so I decided to go all the way back north to Eve Street. This is the first time I've chased a north-bound train south of Hooksett.
1532: I kept heading north and waited out on the train at Robie's Country Store in Hooksett and decided to set up by the old town offices to get a wide(er) shot. Wide-angle shots are non existent on the Northern Mainline, and this is as close to one as a photographer can get.
1545: Next stop was Johnson Rd in Bow, NH. By this point, several other railfans had taken notice of the SD40-2 and were also chasing. The cloud of dust to the left is from a rotary-brush equipped loader, clearing off the drive way. Or rather, tossing it all in the air and letting it land somewhere else.

1539: The train snuck up on me in Hooksett before I could get my camera mounted, so I had to head all the way south as far as Eve Street to catch the train again. 8147's rather loud K5LA is decent sounding, but still not the best sound to me.
1552: I filmed the head end at Granite Street, intending to catch the signal drop from green to red as the locomotives passed, only to find out afterward that the darn lamp post was directly in my line of view. Oh well!
1609: My final spot was Winston Street, where I had intended to catch the train on it's trip north but got beat by a 10mph train. This is the last shot I got of the SD40-2; I hope Pan Am sends more my way.

Yesterday i had a chance to railfan the eastern part of Massachusetts for the first time. I spent most of the day in Ayer. Got there at about 5:30am and a few minutes later, the local came in with an NS unit. As the sun came up, i was greeted with an MBTA train and westbound train POED comes into the picture with a Union Pacific SD70 ACe leading. After a few more commuter trains, POSE makes his way off of the Worcester Main. The last 2 trains i saw that went through Ayer were a westbound commuter and then the MBTA Test Train which was a nice catch. Next stop was Amtrak's Northeast Corridor. Now mind you, i'm used to seeing only Amtrak's Lakeshore Limited that does only 60mph. Decent amount of action at the Attleboro station. Heading back to Western Massachusetts, we make a stop at the Steaming Tender in Palmer where i catch an NECR freight pulling up to the diamond. A few minutes later, it becomes clear why he is waiting as CSX Train Q437 thunders through. All in all, a very good day!! Special thanks to Dave Hover(1973caboose) for the ride
