A bit of info in regard to Axe Handles & Axe Heads of the 17 & 1800 era+, includes Pick Axes. (Especially relevent for those "few" that think they know, but know so little :).
*Hickory wood is very hard, stiff, dense and shock resistant. Typically Hickory in the US and Ash in Europe.
*These handles fit a multitude of metal axe heads, single and double sided with round bores or "Slip-fit eye" used in the 1800's+. The axe head is fitted by sliding it down the handle towards the tapered enlarged end where it is secured and is vertually impossible to "fly off" when swung.
There are numerous other axes with bores of the retangular shape or of the type "Wedge eye". Both have their strengths and weaknesses.
**Slip-fit eye: Easier to remove the head from the handle in cases of breakage, for use of the head on its own or for field-expedient hafting, rehafting, or use of multiple handle lengths for the same head, but the maximum dimensions of the handle are limited to the interior measurements of the eye. Quick interchange of other axe head types with the Slip-fit eye such as the Pickaxe is another advantage.

Pale Rider
Pale Rider is a 1985 American western film produced and directed by Clint Eastwood, who also stars in the lead role. The title is a reference to the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, as the rider of a pale horse is Death.
Plot
The film opens in the countryside outside the fictional town of Lahood, California, and takes place sometime in the 1870s or early 1880s (based on remarks in the film about outlawing hydraulic mining). Thugs working for big-time miner Coy LaHood ride in and destroy the camp of a group of struggling miners and their families who have settled in nearby Carbon Canyon and are panning for gold there. In leaving, they also shoot the little dog of fourteen-year-old Megan Wheeler. As Megan buries it in the woods and prays for a miracle, we see a stranger heading to the town on horseback.
Megan's mother, Sarah, is keeping company with Hull Barret, the leader of the miners. Hull heads off into town to pick up supplies, where the same thugs start to beat him up and he is rescued by the stranger, who takes the men on single-handedly. Hull invites him to his house, and while Eastwood's character is washing, Hull notices what looks like six bullet wounds to his back. Shortly after, he appears wearing a clerical collar and thereafter is called Preacher.
