The Symphony in C sharp minor, completed in 1903 is a work in which Bloch was later to detect the qualities and faults of youth. His original sketches for the symphony suggested titles for the movements, the first, the Tragedy of Life, to show doubts, struggles and hopes, followed by a second movement of happiness and faith. The third movement, the Irony and Sarcasms of Life, was to show struggle, leading to the final Will and Happiness.
The second and third movements of the symphony were performed for the first time at the Basle Festival of Swiss - German music under the director of the composer and provoked considerable hostility from reviewers, with one critic suggesting that concert police should be employed to lock up for 24 hours composers guilty of such prolonged torture. The writer Robert Godet, to whom the published work was later to be dedicated, was more perceptive, adding to the encouragement that Bloch had already received from his teacher Ysaÿe, to whom he had played the symphony in Munich earlier in the year. Godet, later distinguished for his anti-Semitism, detected a Jewish element in the music, an insight that was to influence Bloch's future work. The whole symphony received its first complete performance in Geneva five years later, when it aroused more sympathetic interest. Bloch himself, in later life, was to point out that the symphony contains the roots of what he was to become, pessimist, optimist, warm-hearted or ironical, a summary of his continuing doubts and aspirations.
The symphony is extravagantly orchestrated for a large wind section and percussion that includes tam-tam, chimes, glockenspiel and xylophone, as well as the more usual instruments. The first movement, in which, as elsewhere, early German critics detected the influence of Gustav Mahler, a composer whose work Bloch had never heard at the time, starts in doubt and hesitation to swell in heroic confidence, turning aside at times to episodes of lyrical romanticism, with a final return to the mood of its opening.
The second movement offers expansive music with all the orchestral colouring and variety of a Richard Strauss, leading to a Scherzo of even greater contrast, introduced by an energetic fanfare and leading on to an episode for xylophone, before relaxing into a mood of lyrical serenity, followed by a return to the harsher irony that frames it. The finale opens with a fugue, its angular subject confidently asserted to introduce a movement that makes passing reference to much that has gone before, bringing the work to conclusion of tranquil happiness.

I really like Bell's old recordings, particularly this gem. I don't know the exact point in which he started to stink but this recording is definitely before then! Again, no video here, which is actually nice since Bell is hideous to watch (I know this from experience)

Ernest Bloch (July 24, 1880 – July 15, 1959) was a Swiss-born American composer.
Bloch was born in Geneva and began playing the violin at age 9. He began composing soon afterwards. He studied music at the conservatory in Brussels, where his teachers included the celebrated Belgian violinist Eugène Ysaÿe. He then travelled around Europe, moving to Germany (where he studied composition from 1900–1901 with Iwan Knorr at the Hoch Conservatory in Frankfurt), on to Paris in 1903 and back to Geneva before settling in the United States in 1916, taking American citizenship in 1924. He held several teaching appointments in the U.S., with George Antheil, Frederick Jacobi, Bernard Rogers, and Roger Sessions among his pupils. In December 1920 he was appointed the first Musical Director of the newly formed Cleveland Institute of Music, a post he held until 1925. Following this he was director of the San Francisco Conservatory of Music until 1930.
In 1941, Bloch moved to the small coastal community of Agate Beach, Oregon and lived there the rest of his life. He died in 1959 in Portland, Oregon, of cancer at the age of 78. The Bloch Memorial has been moved from near his house in Agate Beach to a more prominent location at the Newport Performing Arts Center in Newport, Oregon.

Ernst Bloch (German pronunciation: [ˈɛʁnst ˈblɔx], July 8, 1885 – August 4, 1977) was a German Marxist philosopher.
Bloch was influenced by Hegel, Marx, and novelist Karl May. Counted also among his influences are apocalyptic and religious thinkers as diverse as gnostics like Valentinus (see "Spirit of Utopia") and Thomas Müntzer (see "Thomas Müntzer als Theologe der Revolution"). He established friendships with Georg Lukács, Bertolt Brecht, Kurt Weill, Walter Benjamin, and Theodor W. Adorno. Bloch's work focuses on the concept that in a humanistic world where oppression and exploitation have been eliminated there will always be a truly revolutionary force.
Bloch was born in Ludwigshafen, the son of a Jewish railway-employee. After studying philosophy, he married Else von Stritzky, daughter of a Baltic brewer in 1913, who died in 1921. His second marriage with Linda Oppenheimer lasted only a few years. His third wife was Karola Piotrowska, a Polish architect, whom he married in 1934 in Vienna. When the Nazis came to power, they had to flee, first into Switzerland, then to Austria, France, Czechoslovakia, and finally the USA. Bloch returned to the GDR in 1949 and obtained a chair in philosophy at Leipzig. When the Berlin Wall was built in 1961, he did not return to the GDR, but went to Tübingen in West Germany, where he received an honorary chair in Philosophy. He died in Tübingen.

Les enquêteurs de la Brigade Criminelle de Paris en charge de l’affaire comprennent très vite que le tueur n’est pas un débutant et qu’il risque de frapper à nouveau. Malgré une description précise de cet homme faite par de nombreux témoins - il a notamment le visage grêlé - ils n’arrivent pas à l’arrêter. Les rapprochements avec d’autres affaires et les avancées de la police scientifique vont permettre de lui attribuer au moins cinq viols et trois meurtres entre 1986 et 1994. Depuis 1994, plus rien. Plus aucune piste reliant le "Grêlé" avec un autre crime. 24 ans après son entrée sur la scène judiciaire, le mystère sur son identité demeure. Arise to the help of One) 42:55 - Adon Olom (Eternal God, who reigned supreme) 50:20 - Benediction (Now may the Lord bless you) As a young man Ernest Bloch had made a commitment to himself to write "Jewish rhapsodies for orchestra, Jewish poems, dances mostly, poems for voice." He fulfilled that plan with a number of religious and ethnically oriented works, the best known of which include Schelomo (1915-1916), the Three Jewish Poems (1913), and the Israel Symphony (1912-1916). During his tenure as Director of the San Francisco Conservatory (1925-1930), Bloch struck up a friendship with Cantor Reuben Rinder of the Temple Emanuel congregation. It was this association that brought about the commission for Bloch's Avodath Hakodesh--Sacred Service (1930-1935). As part of his preparations for composing the work, Bloch spent a year studying the synagogue music and Hebrew texts used for Saturday morning worship. Much of the work was written during the composer's return to his native Switzerland in the early 1930s. The Sacred Service comprises five main sections--"Meditation," "Kedushah" (Sanctification), "Silent Devotion and Response," "Returning the Scroll to the Ark," and "Adoration"--further divided into a total of twenty-six distinct parts. The work also incorporates a recitation of the Kaddish (Prayer for the Dead); in synagogue performances, it is often the rabbi who does this reading (and in this recording as well). As in the case of any great religious work, the Sacred Service transports the attentive listener beyond the specificity of one set of beliefs into a greater universality; in this regard it ranks as one of Bloch's supreme legacies. The Sacred Service is dedicated to Gerald Warburg.

The Symphony in C sharp minor, completed in 1903 is a work in which Bloch was later to detect the qualities and faults of youth. His original sketches for the symphony suggested titles for the movements, the first, the Tragedy of Life, to show doubts, struggles and hopes, followed by a second movement of happiness and faith. The third movement, the Irony and Sarcasms of Life, was to show struggle, leading to the final Will and Happiness.
The second and third movements of the symphony were performed for the first time at the Basle Festival of Swiss - German music under the director of the composer and provoked considerable hostility from reviewers, with one critic suggesting that concert police should be employed to lock up for 24 hours composers guilty of such prolonged torture. The writer Robert Godet, to whom the published work was later to be dedicated, was more perceptive, adding to the encouragement that Bloch had already received from his teacher Ysaÿe, to whom he had played the symphony in Munich earlier in the year. Godet, later distinguished for his anti-Semitism, detected a Jewish element in the music, an insight that was to influence Bloch's future work. The whole symphony received its first complete performance in Geneva five years later, when it aroused more sympathetic interest. Bloch himself, in later life, was to point out that the symphony contains the roots of what he was to become, pessimist, optimist, warm-hearted or ironical, a summary of his continuing doubts and aspirations.
The symphony is extravagantly orchestrated for a large wind section and percussion that includes tam-tam, chimes, glockenspiel and xylophone, as well as the more usual instruments. The first movement, in which, as elsewhere, early German critics detected the influence of Gustav Mahler, a composer whose work Bloch had never heard at the time, starts in doubt and hesitation to swell in heroic confidence, turning aside at times to episodes of lyrical romanticism, with a final return to the mood of its opening.
The second movement offers expansive music with all the orchestral colouring and variety of a Richard Strauss, leading to a Scherzo of even greater contrast, introduced by an energetic fanfare and leading on to an episode for xylophone, before relaxing into a mood of lyrical serenity, followed by a return to the harsher irony that frames it. The finale opens with a fugue, its angular subject confidently asserted to introduce a movement that makes passing reference to much that has gone before, bringing the work to conclusion of tranquil happiness.

Le 5 mai 1986, la petite Cécile Bloch, 11 ans, est retrouvée morte dans les sous-sols de sa résidence dans le 19e arrondissement de Paris. Elle a été violée, poignardée et étranglée.
Les enquêteurs de la Brigade Criminelle de Paris en charge de l’affaire comprennent très vite que le tueur n’est pas un débutant et qu’il risque de frapper à nouveau. Malgré une description précise de cet homme faite par de nombreux témoins - il a notamment le visage grêlé - ils n’arrivent pas à l’arrêter.
Les rapprochements avec d’autres affaires et les avancées de la police scientifique vont permettre de lui attribuer au moins cinq viols et trois meurtres entre 1986 et 1994. Depuis 1994, plus rien. Plus aucune piste reliant le "Grêlé" avec un autre crime. 24 ans après son entrée sur la scène judiciaire, le mystère sur son identité demeure.

As a young man Ernest Bloch had made a commitment to himself to write "Jewish rhapsodies for orchestra, Jewish poems, dances mostly, poems for voice." He fulfilled that plan with a number of religious and ethnically oriented works, the best known of which include Schelomo (1915-1916), the Three Jewish Poems (1913), and the Israel Symphony (1912-1916).
During his tenure as Director of the San Francisco Conservatory (1925-1930), Bloch struck up a friendship with Cantor Reuben Rinder of the Temple Emanuel congregation. It was this association that brought about the commission for Bloch's Avodath Hakodesh--Sacred Service (1930-1935). As part of his preparations for composing the work, Bloch spent a year studying the synagogue music and Hebrew texts used for Saturday morning worship. Much of the work was written during the composer's return to his native Switzerland in the early 1930s.
The Sacred Service comprises five main sections--"Meditation," "Kedushah" (Sanctification), "Silent Devotion and Response," "Returning the Scroll to the Ark," and "Adoration"--further divided into a total of twenty-six distinct parts. The work also incorporates a recitation of the Kaddish (Prayer for the Dead); in synagogue performances, it is often the rabbi who does this reading (and in this recording as well). As in the case of any great religious work, the Sacred Service transports the attentive listener beyond the specificity of one set of beliefs into a greater universality; in this regard it ranks as one of Bloch's supreme legacies.
The Sacred Service is dedicated to Gerald Warburg.

Bloch moved to the United States for the first time before completing the writing of this work in 1916. Bloch described this work as:" a kind of synthesis of my vision of the world at that period."
It is dedicated to the Flonzaley Quartet, one of the early pioneers of professional chamber music groups. It is in the key of b minor. Bloch titled the work in French Quatour a Cordes, without indicating a number. It would be almost 30 years before Bloch would complete another quartet.
The work is written in a cyclic form that was common to the Franco-Belgium school of composers. This is a structural technique wherein themes return from movement to movement. This is the longest of the quartets which is also indicative of the times in which it was written. In the 1950s when he wrote his final three quartets, Bloch's music would be much more tightly constructed resulting in a less luxurious feeling than we encounter with this string quartet.
Bloch admits some of his Jewish colourations into the fabric of this music. He even quotes form his masterpiece "Schelomo" [uploaded on this channel]. But no matter how atmospheric Bloch might become, it is never the whole story.
In almost all of his larger works Bloch imparts a feeling of gravity and weight. He never wrote a trivial note, yet his works have an ear catching quality that makes them uniquely his.
The technical abilities he possessed gave him license to create new formulas which were totally convincing. This was already evident at this time in his career. It is not surprising that in the United States he would hold several important teaching positions.
The piece is dedicated: "Au Quatuor de Flonzaley".

The Hebraic Rhapsody for cello and orchestra Schelomo ("Solomon") is the best-known work of Ernst Bloch's "Jewish Cycle." It was composed in the space of two months, between December 1915 and February 1916, and dedicated to the Russian cellist Alexander Barjansky. The Carnegie Hall premiere, by the New York Philharmonic under Artur Bodanzky, with the orchestra's principal cellist Hans Kindler taking the solo role, occurred during a concert including the entire Jewish Cycle. Bloch himself is known to have directed the work only once, when Barjansky performed Schelomo at the Rome Augusteo in 1933.
In his program notes, Bloch explained "for years I've had sketches for the book of Ecclesiastes that I wanted to put into music...if you will, the cello can be imagined to be the reincarnated voice of King Solomon, while the orchestra's more complex voice belongs to his time, his world...to his experience. The cello represents a meditative voice, tragically alone."
Although in free rhapsodic form, Schelomo can be subdivided into three sections, preceded by the cello's opening soliloquy.
- The work begins with Solomon's lamentation ("vanity...all is vanity.") before we hear a succession of languorous slow dances and luminous reflective figures (the celesta takes a very important part here) punctuated by occasional outbursts of anger from the brass, paraphrasing motifs from the Hebrew Shofar. In each of these, Solomon abandons himself to the seductive and voluptuous atmosphere, while the dense counterpoint evokes a near Tower of Babel of tortured complexity, before a gigantic climax is reached.
- Now, Solomon's initial protestations of disgust return, as oboe and bassoon solos invoke the synagogue chant "Asher kidshonu." At first, the cello resists the cantor's voice, but then becomes progressively intertwined with its texture as the mounting liturgical chant approaches a second major climax.
- In the concluding episode, again the mood is one of bitter despair and resignation, though a fleeting heavenly vision interposes, only to be denied in another frenetic orchestral outburst, which soon disintegrates, leaving the lone and desolate voice of the cello reflecting again on Solomon's conviction that "all is vanity." Schelomo ends in a mood of dark, unmitigated pessimism, darker, surely, than even its opening utterances would have intimated.
Bloch added "this is my only work that culminates in a total negation -- but the subject demanded it."
