The world’s first bilateral hand transplant in a child has taken place at The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. For more: http://www.chop.edu/handtransplant
The surgery took more than 12 hours. The team, led by L. Scott Levin, M.D., and Benjamin Chang, M.D., included 12 surgeons, 8 nurses, 4 anesthesiologists and others. Levin and Chang direct the Hand Transplantation Program at CHOP.
The recipient, Zion Harvey, 8, lost his hands and lower legs at the age of 2 as a result of a life-threatening infection. He also went into kidney failure as a result of the infection. He had a kidney transplant at age 4, with his mother as the donor. Zion takes immunosuppressant drugs because of the kidney transplant. This made him an ideal candidate for hand transplant. After more than 18 months of evaluation and preparation, Zion was listed for donor hands.
This field of transplant surgery is called vascularized composite allotransplantation.

One of the biggest myths in the hair-transplant industry is that "with just one procedure a full and complete result can be achieved". That's only true if you haven't yet lost much hair, but if you're close to being completely bald on the top of your head like I was when I had my first hair-transplant then you will need at least two procedures with ANY surgeon to have a "full" looking result. Only so much tissue and hair can be moved in one procedure.
One of the problems with FUE is that it damages much of your potential donor area when you have a large FUE procedure. With FUT though you can have multiple FUT surgeries, and then even have FUE surgeries as well in the future if you're in need of touch up work, or need to fill in any other areas.
This was my third FUT procedure, and other than some minor touch-up work will probably be the last surgery that I have for a while.
Fortunately the surgery process when done with a doctor like Daniel McGrath is quite a pleasant and even relaxing experience. I would actually look forward to going through the process as his staff treats you like a celebrity, and takes amazing care of you.

In February 2015 doctors determined 15-year-old Trevor Sullivan was suffering from severe heart failure, and would need a transplant. After 8 months of waiting the family got the call there was a match for Trevor. As he was waking up from the lifesaving surgery his dad was on hand to record him. "I'm so happy. I've been waiting so long. I'm so happy," he says in the video, "I can breathe again and talk. I feel good. I feel amazing. It's amazing. I haven't felt so good, I never felt so good."

In March 2011 she was put onto the transplant waiting list, having been told that she had end-stage lung disease and could be dead within six months.
This film follows Kirstie's extraordinary experience of living on the transplant list, the fear and uncertainty, the realities of having constant pain, taking endless medications, relying on oxygen machines 24 hours a day to breathe and doing all of this whilst planning for her wedding.
It follows Kirstie being rushed to hospital three days before the wedding before bravely making it down the aisle through sheer willpower and determination. As her condition becomes more critical and the chance of a lifesaving lung transplant seems more remote, we follow Kirstie's husband Stuart facing the very real possibility of his new wife dying - they had only been married for three weeks. Despite all the setbacks Kirstie continues to fight for her second chance at life till the very end.

HARBIN, CHINA — A monkey head transplant was said to have been successfully performed at a university in China, said Italian neurosurgeon Sergio Canavero. The experiment was done at Harbin Medical University in China. The researchers connected the blood supply between the head and the new body, but did not connect the spinal cord. "The monkey fully survived the procedure without any neurological injury of whatever kind," New Scientist quoted Dr. Canavero as saying. The surgery took more than 12 hours. The team, led by L. Scott Levin, M.D., and Benjamin Chang, M.D., included 12 surgeons, 8 nurses, 4 anesthesiologists and others. Levin and Chang direct the Hand Transplantation Program at CHOP.
The recipient, Zion Harvey, 8, lost his hands and lower legs at the age of 2 as a result of a life-threatening infection. He also went into kidney failure as a result of the infection. He had a kidney transplant at age 4, with his mother as the donor. Zion takes immunosuppressant drugs because of the kidney transplant. This made him an ideal candidate for hand transplant. After more than 18 months of evaluation and preparation, Zion was listed for donor hands.
This field of transplant surgery is called vascularized composite allotransplantation.

One of the biggest myths in the hair-transplant industry is that "with just one procedure a full and complete result can be achieved". That's only true if you haven't yet lost much hair, but if you're close to being completely bald on the top of your head like I was when I had my first hair-transplant then you will need at least two procedures with ANY surgeon to have a "full" looking result. Only so much tissue and hair can be moved in one procedure.
One of the problems with FUE is that it damages much of your potential donor area when you have a large FUE procedure. With FUT though you can have multiple FUT surgeries, and then even have FUE surgeries as well in the future if you're in need of touch up work, or need to fill in any other areas.
This was my third FUT procedure, and other than some minor touch-up work will probably be the last surgery that I have for a while.
Fortunately the surgery process when done with a doctor like Daniel McGrath is quite a pleasant and even relaxing experience. I would actually look forward to going through the process as his staff treats you like a celebrity, and takes amazing care of you.

Connie Culp was the victim of a shotgun blast to her face by her husband on September 2004. The gunshot left her severely disfigured and in the process shattering her nose, cheek and jaw. She later became the first-ever to receive a face transplant in the U.S.
The first step for surgeons was to determine the borders of the area that they would remove from Culp's face to create a space for the facial tissues of a deceased donor. Surgeons decided that the damage from Culp's injury called for the replacement of about 80 percent of her face.
Upon creating the incisions on the periphery of the face, surgeons had access to the muscles, bones, blood vessels, and other facial tissues. However, removing the skin was only a preliminary step in the complicated face-transplant procedure.
The face transplant went much deeper than the skin. In past operations, surgeons had crafted a makeshift upper jaw and teeth using bone tissue from other areas of Culp's body. To make room for the new face tissues, the previous work had to be removed before the transplant could be started.
According to Culp the surgery has improved her life and she is once again able to eat solid foods and drink from a cup. she can smell, and breathe on her own again. To maintain her health and help her bodies immune system from rejecting her new face she must take a daily regimen of powerful immunosuppressant drugs.

The experiment was done at Harbin Medical University in China. The researchers connected the blood supply between the head and the new body, but did not connect the spinal cord.
"The monkey fully survived the procedure without any neurological injury of whatever kind," New Scientist quoted Dr. Canavero as saying. The monkey was kept alive for only 20 hours after the procedure for ethical reasons.
To perform a head transplant, both donor and patient need to have their heads severed from spinal cord cleanly. A glue-like substance known as polyethylene glycol (PEG) is needed to preserve nerve cell membranes."
Other techniques to aid recovery would include spinal cord stimulation, and the use of a negative pressure device to encourage the nerves to fuse. The head needs to be cooled to -15 °C. The experiment on a monkey shows that one can survive the procedure without suffering brain injury, Dr. Canavero told New Scientist.
Dr. Canavero is seeking funds to perform a head transplant to 31-year-old Russian patient Valery Spriridonov, who has a genetic muscle-wasting disease.

You have probably heard that FMT is a highly effective treatment for Clostirium Difficile (c. diff) bacterial infections with studies estimating a success rate of 90 - 100% However it can also be used to treat other medical conditions like Ulcerative Colitis. I personally used it to treat my case of Ulcerative Colitis in June and July 2011 when the only other treatment option my doctors gave me was surgery. After 12 years of illness FMTs worked after every other medical treatment was unsuccessful and I now consider myself cured.
I think it is important to note that for me the fecal transplants alone were NOT the only thing that I did which lead to my cure. I also used a combination of medications and nutritional supplements prescribed or recommended by doctors from several different specialties. I think these along with the length of time I did them for is why this worked so well for me. This stands a chance of working for anyone who is suffering from c. diff, Ulcerative Colitis, Crohn's Disease. Research is ongoing for other conditions as well including Autism, depression, obesity and several auto immune disorders.

TODAY WAS JULIANA'S BONE MARROW TRANSPLANT! It was like a blood and/or platelet transfusion like Juliana has received over 120 times in the past but this time it was DIFFERENT. It was BONE MARROW from her birth mother Iryna.
Tammy explains what happens in the next few weeks: "What happens after the transplant: Juliana will remain in the hospital until her ANC (absolute neutrophil count--a neutrophil is a type of white blood cell) is above 500 (normal is 1500-8000) for three days in a row. She currently has no immune system--it was destroyed with the six days of chemotherapy and day of total body irradiation so she is getting antibiotics, antifungals and antivirals around the clock as a precaution. Juliana will have two more days of chemotherapy (on Monday and Tuesday) to kill any mature white blood cells that were in the marrow so they cannot attack her body. The bone marrow stem cells will not be hurt by the chemo and as they settle into her marrow and start growing will learn to recognize Juliana's body instead of attacking it. Juliana will also start taking two immune suppressant medications on Wednesday as a precaution and continue them for six months. She will need many blood and platelet transfusions in the next few months and will need to be monitored closely for signs of host verse graft disease and veno occlusive disease."

In efforts to highlight, educate, and empower potential donors to consider donorship, the Methodist University Hospital Transplant Institute, which is affiliated with the University of Tennessee Health Science Center, webcasted a living donor kidney transplant live on the Web Thursday, April 21, at 3 p.m. Kidney transplantation is now considered a proactive treatment option for patients who have been diagnosed with kidney disease. "To give someone a kidney before they have to start dialysis is to give them their quality of life back. It's their best chance at extending life," said A. Osama Gaber, program director for the Methodist University Hospital Transplant Institute and professor of transplantation surgery at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center
