So we decided to go on a 6 day holiday before uni starts to the beautiful Keppel island.
Keppel is located 15 km's off the coast of Yeppoon and is the largest of eighteen islands in the Keppel Group. The island itself covers an area of 14.5 km².
Absolute paradise.

Keppel Island (Spanish: Isla de la Vigia) is one of the Falkland Islands, lying between Saunders Island and Pebble Island, and near Golding Island to the north of West Falkland on Keppel Sound. It has an area of 3,626 hectares (8,960 acres) and its highest point, Mt Keppel, is 341 metres (1,119 ft) high. There is a wide, flat valley in the centre of the island with several freshwater lakes. The central valley rises steeply to the south-west, west and north. The north-east is low-lying, with a deeply indented coastline. The main conservation issue is the large population of Norway rats on the island.
The island is named after First Lord of the Admiralty, Admiral Augustus Keppel.
The island became a sheep farm in 1885, initially doubling as a missionary settlement aimed at the Yaghan people of Tierra del Fuego. More recently, it became a nature reserve. It also has a small settlement on the east coast, but no permanent population.
The mission on Keppel Island was established by the South American Missionary Society in 1855, initially under Captain William Parker Snow, and remained in operation until 1898. It had been proposed by Captain Allen Gardiner, founder of the Society, before his death in 1851, as a less hostile environment from which to gain the confidence of the Yaghan and learn their language. From 1856, several of the Yaghan were induced to move to Keppel Island, and learnt farming techniques and some English. After some setbacks, the mission succeeded in founding a mission at Ushuaia in 1869, under the leadership of Waite Stirling.

With a planned 250 berth marina, 750 villas, 300 apartments and a 250 room hotel, plus golf course, sports field and a shopping and cafe precinct, the island as we know it is set to be destroyed. We travelled over on a 'Freedom Fast Cats' ferry from Yeppoon, landing on Fishermans Beach before travelling to Monkey Beach then on to Long Beach, finally finishing with a few cold beers on the beach bar on Putney Beach. One of the most beautiful islands along the Capricorn Coast is in the cross-hairs of a development company. With a planned 250 berth marina, 750 villas, 300 apartments and a 250 room hotel, plus golf course, sports field and a shopping and cafe precinct, the island as we know it is set to be destroyed.
Most people would agree that a re-development of the existing resort site would be welcomed and acceptable - however with the inclusion of the additional 750 villas & 300 apartments it seems to be a real estate money grab. Land that is owned by the people of Australia and leased by the government to the company, which they plan to sell of for their own commercial gain. On top of this, areas of high environmental significance will be destroyed or altered. Effects from run-off and fertilisers will impact heavily on the usually clear, pristine waters that surround the island.
The proposed Marina is to be built on one of the shallowest beaches on the island. The area is a also few hundred meters from a marine national park and green zone. Adjacent to the Marina development is also passage rocks which has the 2nd highest coral diversity in the Keppels. Corals are very susceptible to the sediments that continual dredging of the marina and access channel will deposit.

Singapore & Sentosa Island View from Singapore Cable Car
The Singapore Cable Car provides an aerial link from Mount Faber on the main island of Singapore to the resort island of Sentosa across the Keppel Harbour. Opened on 15 February 1974, it was the first aerial ropeway system in the world to span a harbour. However, it is not the first aerial ropeway system to span the sea. For instance, Awashima Kaijō Ropeway in Japan, built in 1964, goes over a short strait to an island. Although referred to by its operators as a cable car, the listed system is in fact a bi-cable gondola lift and not an aerial tramway. A round-trip ticket currently costs SGD 29 for adult, SGD 18 for child.

now the replica of this granite outcrop stands between keppel bay and labrador park, trying to remind people of the importance of landmarks, without which, you will be lost in your direction when you try to traverse in a foreign locale. now with GPS, natural landmarks are replaced by man-made ones, like the Reflections - a crooked condo by the keppel bay.

Marina at Keppel Bay rallied yacht owners and the boating fraternity who had come forward enthusiastically to host the elderly onboard their yachts.
The growth story of Keppel runs parallel to that of Singapore. It was significant for Keppel as host to organise the charity convoy to sail from its birthplace at Keppel Bay. The Keppel Island and the site where the Keppel Bay homes are now standing was once part of the old Keppel Harbour yard back in the 1960s. Within Keppel Bay are some of Singapore's oldest docks which are still preserved.
CEO of Keppel Land flagged off the charity convoy comprising 21 vessels. The convoy embarked on a heritage journey through Cruise Bay, Tanjong Berlayar and Labrador Park.
A first-time experience for the elderly to be onboard luxury yachts, they not only enjoyed the cruise, they are able to appreciate together how the Singapore skyline and coastline have grown and changed.
The meaningful event also provided a wonderful opportunity for the boaters to engage the beneficiaries and play a part in giving back to the community. Many yacht owners also provided hospitality on board their yachts with gifts and refreshments.
More than 70 Keppel Volunteers were at hand to befriend the seniors and shared with them interesting facts about the landmarks visited during the cruise. The volunteers also entertained the elderly with a variety of kampung games and a sing-a-long session.
