The title President is derived from the Latin prae- "before" + sedere "to sit." As such, it originally designated the officer who presides over or "sits before" a gathering and ensures that debate is conducted according to the rules of order (see also chairman and speaker). Early examples are from the universities of Oxford and Cambridge (from 1464) and the founding President of the Royal Society William Brouncker in 1660. This usage survives today in the title of such offices as "President of the Board of Trade" and "Lord President of the Council" in the United Kingdom, as well as "President of the Senate" (one of the roles constitutionally assigned to the Vice-President of the United States). The officiating priest at certain Anglican religious services, too, is sometimes called the "President" in this sense. However the most common modern usage is as the title of a head of state in a republic.
In pre-revolutionary France, the president of a Parlement evolved into a powerful magistrate, a member of the so-called noblesse de robe ("nobility of the gown"), with considerable judicial as well as administrative authority. The name referred to his primary role of presiding over trials and other hearings. In the 17th and 18th centuries, seats in the Parlements, including presidencies, became effectively hereditary, since the holder of the office could ensure that it would pass to an heir by paying the crown a special tax known as the paulette. The post of "first president" (premier président), however, could only be held by the King's nominees. The Parlements were abolished by the French Revolution. In modern France the chief judge of a court is known as its president (président de la cour).
The first usage of the word 'president' to denote the highest official in a government was during the Commonwealth of England. After the abolition of the monarchy the English Council of State, whose members were elected by the House of Commons, became the executive government of the Commonwealth. The Council of State was the successor of the Privy Council, which had previously been headed by the Lord President; its successor the Council of State was also headed by a Lord President, the first of which was John Bradshaw. However, the Lord President alone was not head of state, because that office was vested in the council as a whole.
The modern usage of the term 'president' to designate a single person who is the head of state of a republic can be traced directly to the United States Constitution of 1787, which created the office of President of the United States. Previous American governments had included "presidents" (such as the president of the Continental Congress or the president of the Massachusetts Provincial Congress), but these were presiding officers in the older sense, with no executive authority. It has been suggested that the executive use of the term was borrowed from early American colleges and universities, which were usually headed by a president. British universities were headed by an official called the "Chancellor" (typically a ceremonial position) while the chief administrator held the title of "Vice-Chancellor". But America's first institutions of higher learning (such as Harvard University and Yale University) didn't resemble a full-sized university so much as one of its constituent colleges. A number of colleges at Cambridge University featured an official called the "President". The head, for instance, of Magdalene College, Cambridge was called the master and his second the president. The first president of Harvard, Henry Dunster, had been educated at Magdalene. Some have speculated that he borrowed the term out of a sense of humility, considering himself only a temporary place-holder. The presiding official of Yale College, originally a "Rector" (after the usage of continental European universities), became "President" in 1745.

The six largest financial institutions in this country today hold assets equal to about 60% of the nation’s gross domestic product. These six banks issue more than two-thirds of all credit cards and over 35% of all mortgages. They control 95% of all derivatives and hold more than 40% of all bank deposits in the United States.
We must break up too-big-to-fail financial institutions. Those institutions received a $700 billion bailout from the US taxpayer, and more than $16 trillion in virtually zero interest loans from the Federal Reserve. Despite that, financial institutions made over $152 billion in profit in 2014 – the most profitable year on record, and three of the four largest financial institutions are 80% bigger today than they were before we bailed them out.
Our banking system must be part of the productive, job-creating economy. The Federal Reserve, a government entity which serves as the engine of the banking industry, must eliminate its internal conflicts of interest, provide stricter oversight, and insist that the banks serve the economy in a way that works for everyone, not just a few.

Every family, every community and every business relies on our nations’ physical infrastructure to survive and to thrive. We expect that our roads, bridges and trains will get us to our destination without injury, and that our airports are modern and safe. We expect that our tap water is clean, and that our dams and levees won’t burst when it rains.
The good news is that it is not too late to get back on track. Let’s make a significant investment in the physical infrastructure on which our economy and our society depend upon. Let’s create the millions of jobs we desperately need by making our tax code fair and just. Let’s Rebuild America

As president, Senator Bernie Sanders will:
1.Fight for pay equity for women.
It is a national disgrace that women only earn 78 cents for every dollar a man earns. The gender pay gap is even worse for women of color. Today, African American women earn just 64 cents for every dollar a white male earns, while the figure for Hispanic women is just 54 cents. As president, Sen. Sanders will sign the Paycheck Fairness Act into law to end wage discrimination based on gender.
1.Expand and protect the reproductive rights of women.
Sen. Sanders has consistently fought against Republican attacks on the fundamental rights of women to control their own bodies. As president, Sen. Sanders would expand, not cut, funding for Planned Parenthood, the Title X family planning program, and other initiatives that protect women’s health, access to contraception, and the availability of a safe and legal abortion.
1.Only nominate Supreme Court justices who support Roe v. Wade and the reproductive rights of women.
As president, Sen. Sanders will only nominate Supreme Court justices who understand that Roe v. Wade is the law of the land and recognize the rights of women to have access to family planning services.
1.Make quality childcare and Pre-K available to all Americans.
Sen. Sanders is working on a plan to make high-quality childcare and Pre-K available to every American, regardless of income. It is unacceptable that the cost of a quality childcare program is out of reach for millions of Americans.
1.Increase the minimum wage to $15 an hour by 2020.
According to the most recent statistics, women make up two-thirds of all minimum wage workers. Increasing the minimum wage to $15 an hour would significantly boost the wages of more than 15 million women and help close the gender wage gap.

It’s been about six months since Oregon flipped the traditional model for voter registration on its head. Though the trend in recent years has shown some Republican state policymakers making registration more difficult in many states, Gov. Kate Brown (D) and the Democratic-led legislature made Oregon the nation’s first state with an opt-out, rather than an opt-in, model.
For years, the burden has been on the individual – if you’re eligible to vote, it’s up to you to take the affirmative steps needed to register. Oregon, however, embraced automatic voter registration, though anyone who wants to withdraw from the system voluntarily is free to do so.
The L.A. Times reported over the weekend that a neighboring state is moving forward with the same model.
California lawmakers on Friday approved a bill that would automatically register to vote any eligible Californian who gets a driver’s license or state identification card – unless the person opts out. […]
Nearly 7 million Californians, mostly young people, are eligible, but not registered, to vote. In an effort to boost the number, Assemblywoman Lorena Gonzalez (D-San Diego) introduced a bill modeled on a new law in Oregon to get more people to the polls.
MSNBC’s Zack Roth reported the other day that Gov. Jerry Brown (D) has not yet taken a position on the bill, though proponents are cautiously optimistic.
Given California’s size and population, this represents a major step forward for the entire idea of automatic voter registration, and there’s ample reason to believe the progress will spread. Roth’s report added:
Automatic voter registration is fast gaining traction in blue states as a way to expand access to voting, after record low turnout in last fall’s midterms. In March, Oregon became the first state to enact the reform, prompting legislators in 17 states, plus the District of Columbia and both houses of the U.S. Congress, to introduce similar bills. It gained further momentum in June when Hillary Clinton backed the idea in a major campaign speech on voting rights.
The Brennan Center for Justice at the NYU School of Law has a breakdown of each of the pending efforts at the state level.

You could be forgiven for not knowing, but Tuesday is National Voter Registration Day—a chance for eligible Americans of all stripes to register to vote.
Registration is always a worthwhile goal, but this year, it’s more salient and politically charged than usual. That’s because it comes at a time when, despite record low turnout last fall, the voter registration process has been drawn into the center of a fierce partisan battle over access to the ballot.
The more people who vote, the better Democrats do. As a result, with very few exceptions, one party is following a strategy of expanding the electorate, and the other is working to limit it.
Officially, National Voter Registration Day has no agenda beyond signing up as many Americans as possible. But the reality is that voter registration, like so much else in today’s charged political climate, has become a subject of intense partisan conflict. That’s because these days, the more people who vote, the better Democrats do. As a result, with very few exceptions, one party is following a strategy of expanding the electorate, and the other is working to limit it.
More than 70 million eligible Americans aren’t registered to vote – a key reason why turnout fell to just 36% in last fall’s midterms. The unregistered are more likely than the registered to be non-white, young, and poor – all groups that lean Democratic. Nearly half of all eligible Latinos, and over half of all eligible millennials, aren’t registered.
In response, Democrats have put forward an array of proposals to make registering easy.
Earlier this year, Oregon passed a law that will provide for anyone who has contact with the DMV to be automatically registered to vote, unless they opt out. It’s expected to bring onto the rolls nearly half of the 800,000 Oregonians who are eligible to vote but not registered. A similar bill passed this month by California lawmakers is on the desk of Gov. Jerry Brown. Democrats in the U.S. House and Senate have introduced automatic voter registration measures. And several other blue states are also considering the idea, which got a big boost when Hillary Clinton came out for it in May, part of a sweeping and expansive voting rights vision laid out by the Democratic front-runner for 2016.

Bernard "Bernie" Sanders (born September 8, 1941) is an American politician and the junior United States Senator from Vermont. A Democrat as of 2015,[5] he had been the longest-serving independent in U.S. Congressional history. Sanders has been the ranking minority member on the Senate Budget Committee since January 2015.[6] He is a candidate for President of the United States in the 2016 U.S. presidential election.
Sanders was born and raised in the borough of Brooklyn, in New York City. He graduated from the University of Chicago in 1964. While a student, Sanders was a member of the Young People's Socialist League and an active civil rights protest organizer for the Congress of Racial Equality and the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee.[7][8] In 1963, he participated in the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom where Martin Luther King, Jr. gave his "I Have a Dream" speech.[7]
After settling in Vermont in 1968, Sanders ran unsuccessful third-party campaigns for governor and U.S. senator in the early to mid-1970s. As an independent, he was elected mayor of Burlington, Vermont's most populous city, in 1981. He was reelected three times. In 1990, he was elected to represent Vermont's at-large congressional district in the U.S. House of Representatives. In 1991, Sanders co-founded the Congressional Progressive Caucus. He served as a congressman for 16 years before being elected to the U.S. Senate in 2006. In 2012, he was reelected by a large margin, capturing almost 71% of the popular vote.
Sanders has long been critical of U.S. foreign policy, and was an early and outspoken opponent of the Iraq War. He rose to national prominence following his 2010 filibuster[9][10] against the proposed extension of the Bush tax cuts. Sanders favors policies similar to those of social democratic parties in Europe, particularly those instituted by the Nordic countries.[14] He is a leading progressive voice on issues such as income inequality,[15] universal healthcare, parental leave, climate change,[16] LGBT rights, and campaign finance reform.[17] He is also outspoken on civil rights and civil liberties, and has been particularly critical of racial discrimination in the criminal justice system[18] and mass surveillance policies such as the USA PATRIOT Act[19] and the NSA surveillance programs.

Guaranteeing healthcare as a right of citizenship by enacting a Medicare for all single-payer healthcare system. It’s time for the U.S. to join every major industrialized country on earth and provide universal healthcare to all.
10.Requiring employers to provide at least 12 weeks of paid family and medical leave; two weeks of paid vacation; and 7 days of paid sick days. Real family values are about making sure that parents have the time they need to bond with their babies and take care of their children and relatives when they get ill.
11.Enacting a universal childcare and prekindergarten program. Every psychologist understands that the most formative years for a human being is from the ages 0-3. We have got to make sure every family in America has the opportunity to send their kids to a high quality childcare and pre-K program.
12.Making it easier for workers to join unions by fighting for the Employee Free Choice Act. One of the most significant reasons for the 40-year decline in the middle class is that the rights of workers to collectively bargain for better wages and benefits have been severely undermined.
13.Breaking up huge financial institutions so that they are no longer too big to fail. Seven years ago, the taxpayers of this country bailed out Wall Street because they were too big to fail. Yet, 3 out of the 4 largest financial institutions are 80 percent bigger today than before we bailed them out. Sen. Sanders has introduced legislation to break these banks up. As president, he will fight to sign this legislation into law.

Many Thanks Melanie Fisher!
Thanks to Devon Holm for our great thumbnail!
As president, Senator Bernie Sanders will reduce income and wealth inequality by:
1.Demanding that the wealthy and large corporations pay their fair share in taxes. As president, Sen. Sanders will stop corporations from shifting their profits and jobs overseas to avoid paying U.S. income taxes. He will create a progressive estate tax on the top 0.3 percent of Americans who inherit more than $3.5 million. He will also enact a tax on Wall Street speculators who caused millions of Americans to lose their jobs, homes, and life savings.
2.Increasing the federal minimum wage from $7.25 to $15 an hour by 2020. In the year 2015, no one who works 40 hours a week should be living in poverty.
3.Putting at least 13 million Americans to work by investing $1 trillion over five years towards rebuilding our crumbling roads, bridges, railways, airports, public transit systems, ports, dams, wastewater plants, and other infrastructure needs.
4.Reversing trade policies like NAFTA, CAFTA, and PNTR with China that have driven down wages and caused the loss of millions of jobs. If corporate America wants us to buy their products they need to manufacture those products in this country, not in China or other low-wage countries.
5.Creating 1 million jobs for disadvantaged young Americans by investing $5.5 billion in a youth jobs program. Today, the youth unemployment rate is off the charts. We have got to end this tragedy by making sure teenagers and young adults have the jobs they need to move up the economic ladder.
6.Fighting for pay equity by signing the Paycheck Fairness Act into law. It is an outrage that women earn just 78 cents for every dollar a man earns.
7.Making tuition free at public colleges and universities throughout America. Everyone in this country who studies hard should be able to go to college regardless of income.
8.Expanding Social Security by lifting the cap on taxable income above $250,000. At a time when the senior poverty rate is going up, we have got to make sure that every American can retire with dignity and respect.

Article by By Tim Britton from The Fairfield Weekly Reader:
Irrepressible Jan Smith Sings at Café Paradiso:
Jan Smith of Cuyama Mama & The Hot Flashes performs
original music spanning 30 years of songwriting
Those who count their years in Fairfield in decades will have fond memories of the irrepressible Jan Smith, joyously commanding the stage as the lead in Finnian’s Rainbow, or perhaps just as one of the most sweetly lit up of friends. I met Jan when she was an MIU student when I moved here in ’83.
Her New Orleans bred joie de vivre found me easy prey and she remains one of my favorite people to this day. Unfortunately for us, she has rarely returned from her west coast wanderings. Currently a member of Quail Springs, a permaculture teaching community east of Ojai, California, she walks her talk with rare authenticity, her bare feet sinking deeply into the land she lives off. (quailsprings.org)
If she did nothing but get on stage and let her bright eyes do all the fireworks, I would die happy, but her voice is this deep soul’s match. Drawing on her background in Bessy Smith style blues (no relation), her gutsy original songs saucily walk her well into 21st century new thought. Come join the love fest at Café Paradiso this Saturday, June 27 at 8 p.m.

With a square bustling with entrepreneurial activity to a slate of restaurants more per-capita strong than San Francisco, Fairfield offers a lot to its citizens a lot in the way of commerce. And from a more traditional economic standpoint, Fairfield has much to offer in the manufacturing arena as well, where diversity takes no holiday. A community of about 10,000, we manufacture injection-molded plastics products, commercial laundry equipment and hand brushes. We assemble traffic-routing materials and construct steel buildings. We cut rock with water for one-of a kind works of art.
The Chamber is proud each year to give recognition and show Fairfield’s appreciation for the manufacturing component of our economy and, indeed, our community. Fairfield manufacturers have historically been outstanding corporate citizens and responsible stewards of our industrial tradition. And so, each year, the Manufacturers Appreciation Luncheon offers members of the Fairfield Manufacturer’s Association a podium before the crowd for each to tell of the year that was. It’s an at once terrific information-share, social opportunity and business lunch. And through a long-time partnership with major sponsor Gamrath-Doyle Insurance, each attending manufacturing representative dines for free.

The 34th Army Concert Band of The Iowa National Guard is stationed in Fairfield and is the only military band in the state of Iowa. The band is under the command and direction of CW2 Kent C. Wesselink, of Eagle Grove, and 1SG Brent T. Krumboltz, of Beardstown, Illinois. The 34th Army Concert Band aims to provide music throughout the spectrum of military operations and instill in our soldiers the will to fight and win, foster the support of our citizens and promote our national interests at home and abroad. This band is made up of citizen soldiers whose civilian occupations include teachers, salesmen, corporate management, engineers and students. Members of the band live throughout Iowa, Illinois and Nebraska.
The band is made up of citizen soldiers whose civilian occupations include teachers, salesmen, corporate management, engineers and students. Members live throughout Iowa, Illinois and Nebraska.
The current focus of the 34th Army Band is developing smaller Musical Performance Teams (MPTs) in order to expand their ability to support more musical requests both for the military and community relations events throughout Iowa. Current MPTs include the Concert Band, Ceremonial Band, Sidewinders Rock Band, Scrap Metal popular music group, Patriots Fife and Drum MPT, Iowa Brass Command MPT and Operation Groove jazz ensemble.
“It’s very fitting to have the band perform in their home community in celebration of Independence Day,” said Rustin Lippincott, Fairfield Arts & Convention Center executive director. “We’ve been working many months to make this concert a reality.”

Fairfield, Iowa, September 2014: Fairfield/Jefferson County Suicide Awareness Event
Hosted by Fairfield Cares • info@FairfieldCares.com
Fairfield Cares mission is to convey that suicide is a public health problem that is preventable when help is available.
This event had presentations by Pat McGovern, Suicide Prevention Coordinator, Iowa Department of Public Health, Dr. Scott Terry, Director of Ardent Counseling Center, and survivors of attempted suicide Janet McDonald and Tom Allen.
Too many Jefferson County county residents die by suicide each year. There have been 19 suicides in Jefferson County from 2008-2014. With three deaths this year, our loss from suicide is one-and-a-half times the national average rate. Most deaths by suicide are preventable.
This event acknowledged the recent suicides in our community, and offered introductory understanding of suicide issues and suicide prevention as well as highlighting local resources for mental health.
Suicide prevention is everyone's business.
Suicide is a major mental health problem.
Suicide is preventable.
Our community can organize to save lives.
You are invited to be part of the Fairfield Suicide Awareness Coalition. Future trainings will provide more in depth knowledge of suicide prevention and intervention.
