The Ghost Writer by Philip Roth
A very good read, finalist for The Pulitzer Prize in 1980
It is frustrating to say that I am still not sure if and how much I like the novels of Philip Roth although I was bewitched when I first started reading Portnoy’s Complaint.
The first part of that novel was fascinating, if very outrageous at times- especially in the bathroom, with sperm on the lightning and elsewhere…was it…everywhere??
But as I read on, Portnoy lost part of its mesmerizing quality, mainly because I do not get the right frequency, vibes or something.
American Pastoral was another go at an acclaimed novel by one of the favorites for the Nobel Prize, although he lost again this year.
I did not like American Pastoral and that was somewhat clear from the start.
With the Ghost Writer there are mixed feelings and an impression that although very good, it is not really one of my favorites.
I was confused when I heard the title, thinking it could be the book on which the Roman Polanski movie is based.
Then I found that part of the plot resembles Dubin’s Lives by Bernard Malamud, where a famous writer falls for a much younger woman.
In fact, Wikipedia tells us that the writer Lonoff is believed to be inspired by Henry Roth, Bernard Malamud or both.
Lonoff receives a letter at one point, from a reader who wants to suggest a plot that recalls The Assistant, in broad lines.
And then there is the inclusion of the Story of Anne Frank, much admired by everybody and in particular by Nathan Zuckerman.
He is the hero of the novel and an aspiring young writer, who comes to visit and pay his respects to Lonoff, who appreciates what the young aspiring author had written so far.
The trouble is that the family and even friends resent the way Nathan has portrayed what appear to be members of the family.
And there is the issue of what gentiles would think and how the unfavorable image present in these stories would confirm anti- Semites in their prejudices.
The characters are funny and complex, from what we hear of them and I liked the aunt and even Sydney, the villainous uncle who sues his relative to get access to eh fortune left in the first stage for educating purposes.
The aunt has two boys that she wants and in the end succeeds in putting through medical school, with help from the inheritance.
It was provided in the will that the boys should be educated and after they graduate, the rest would reach the infamous Sydney, who would not wait.
At the Lonoff residence, there are a few scenes, between the wife- Hope and her husband and another one where the protagonists are the writer and the young guest who had been helping with literary papers but also entered the bed of Lonoff.
It is funny and to some extent ridiculous that Nathan has to climb on top of the desk of the great man to overhear what is discussed and needs to place a volume on top of that desk to make sense of the words.
There are many good moments, passages and even chapters that I enjoyed thoroughly and had fun with the family, greedy Sydney and all.
But it is not really a masterpiece – I think, even if it is presumptuous for a reader with no professional background to say that about a book that made it on the short list for the Pulitzer Prize in 1980.
My guess is that it would be 4 out of 5 stars for the undersigned.

The Ghost Writer by Philip Roth
A very good read, finalist for The Pulitzer Prize in 1980
It is frustrating to say that I am still not sure if and how much I like the novels of Philip Roth although I was bewitched when I first started reading Portnoy’s Complaint.
The first part of that novel was fascinating, if very outrageous at times- especially in the bathroom, with sperm on the lightning and elsewhere…was it…everywhere??
But as I read on, Portnoy lost part of its mesmerizing quality, mainly because I do not get the right frequency, vibes or something.
American Pastoral was another go at an acclaimed novel by one of the favorites for the Nobel Prize, although he lost again this year.
I did not like American Pastoral and that was somewhat clear from the start.
With the Ghost Writer there are mixed feelings and an impression that although very good, it is not really one of my favorites.
I was confused when I heard the title, thinking it could be the book on which the Roman Polanski movie is based.
Then I found that part of the plot resembles Dubin’s Lives by Bernard Malamud, where a famous writer falls for a much younger woman.
In fact, Wikipedia tells us that the writer Lonoff is believed to be inspired by Henry Roth, Bernard Malamud or both.
Lonoff receives a letter at one point, from a reader who wants to suggest a plot that recalls The Assistant, in broad lines.
And then there is the inclusion of the Story of Anne Frank, much admired by everybody and in particular by Nathan Zuckerman.
He is the hero of the novel and an aspiring young writer, who comes to visit and pay his respects to Lonoff, who appreciates what the young aspiring author had written so far.
The trouble is that the family and even friends resent the way Nathan has portrayed what appear to be members of the family.
And there is the issue of what gentiles would think and how the unfavorable image present in these stories would confirm anti- Semites in their prejudices.
The characters are funny and complex, from what we hear of them and I liked the aunt and even Sydney, the villainous uncle who sues his relative to get access to eh fortune left in the first stage for educating purposes.
The aunt has two boys that she wants and in the end succeeds in putting through medical school, with help from the inheritance.
It was provided in the will that the boys should be educated and after they graduate, the rest would reach the infamous Sydney, who would not wait.
At the Lonoff residence, there are a few scenes, between the wife- Hope and her husband and another one where the protagonists are the writer and the young guest who had been helping with literary papers but also entered the bed of Lonoff.
It is funny and to some extent ridiculous that Nathan has to climb on top of the desk of the great man to overhear what is discussed and needs to place a volume on top of that desk to make sense of the words.
There are many good moments, passages and even chapters that I enjoyed thoroughly and had fun with the family, greedy Sydney and all.
But it is not really a masterpiece – I think, even if it is presumptuous for a reader with no professional background to say that about a book that made it on the short list for the Pulitzer Prize in 1980.
My guess is that it would be 4 out of 5 stars for the undersigned.
