Based on themes arising from real life interviews, TOUCH WOOD looks at the nature of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. The action takes place over one night where we see a man preparing for bed. However instead of falling asleep he spends the time checking and rechecking lights, doors and clocks, obsessively securing the house for his night's rest. Stylistically the animation highlights the divide between the character and his attempt to control his increasingly malevolent environment. What is Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder?
Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder, OCD, is an anxiety disorder and is characterized by recurrent, unwanted thoughts (obsessions) and/or repetitive behaviors (compulsions). Repetitive behaviors such as handwashing, counting, checking, or cleaning are often performed with the hope of preventing obsessive thoughts or making them go away. Performing these so-called "rituals," however, provides only temporary relief, and not performing them markedly increases anxiety.
Signs & Symptoms
People with OCD may be plagued by persistent, unwelcome thoughts or images, or by the urgent need to engage in certain rituals. They may be obsessed with germs or dirt, and wash their hands over and over. They may be filled with doubt and feel the need to check things repeatedly.
Treatment
Effective treatments for obsessive-compulsive disorder are available, and research is yielding new, improved therapies that can help most people with OCD and other anxiety disorders lead productive, fulfilling lives.

Today we talk about OCPD (obsessive compulsive personality disorder): what it is, how we diagnose it, and what our treatment options are.
OCPD is when we have a pattern of preoccupation with orderliness, perfectionism, and control. These desires or pattern of behavior will come at the expense of flexibility, openness and efficiency. It usually begins in early adulthood and must be present in a variety of contexts.
We must have 4 out of the following 8 symptoms:
1.Preoccupied with lists, details, rules, order, organization or schedules to the extent that the major point of the activity is lost.
2. Shows perfectionism that interferes with task completion.
3. Is excessively devoted to work and productivity to the exclusion of leisure activities.
4. Is overconscientious, scrupulous, and inflexible about matters of morality. This cannot be accounted for by cultural or religious identification.
5. Is unable to discard worn-out or worthless objects even when they have no sentimental value.
6.Reluctant to delegate tasks or to work with others unless they submit to exactly his or her way of doing things.
7. Adopts a miserly spending style.
8. Shows rigidity and stubbornness.

As for treatment options: They say that regular talk therapy as well as group therapy can help.

Compulsive lying or pathological lying is not in the DSM anymore (was in the DSM 3) and therefore cannot be diagnosed on it's own. Due to this change, there are many beliefs and arguments about compulsive lying, what it is, and how to treat it.
Here are some of the things I found:
The person who struggles with compulsive lying tells lies that are just believable enough. They may be amazing stories or things they did that made them heroic, but you can't completely say for sure they are lying. It is also important to note that these lies are not due to a delusion. They know they are lying and upon confrontation they will admit that that they were lying. Also, there urge to lie doesn't come from any external force. They feel that they need to lie because their life isn't exciting enough. Lastly, all of the lies or stories they tell will place them in a favorable light.
As for treatment many argue that compulsive lying is part of other personality disorders and should be treated as such. The people who believe it should be it's own diagnosis; CBT or Behavioral Therapy tends to be best. This can help them recognize when the thoughts and urges to lie build up and how to stop them from acting out on that. I hope you found this helpful!

Compulsive behavior
Compulsive behavior is defined as performing an act persistently and repetitively without it necessarily leading to an actual reward or pleasure. Compulsive behaviors could be an attempt to make obsessions go away. The act is usually a small, restricted and repetitive behavior, yet not disturbing in a pathological way. Compulsive behaviors are a need to reduce apprehension caused by internal feelings a person wants to abstain or control. A major cause of the compulsive behaviors is said to be obsessive–compulsive disorder (OCD)."The main idea of compulsive behavior is that the likely excessive activity is not connected to the purpose to which it appears directed.". Furthermore, there are many different types of compulsive behaviors including, shopping, hoarding, eating, gambling, trichotillomania and picking skin, checking, counting, washing, sex, and more. Also, there are cultural examples of compulsive behavior.
Disorders in which it is seen
Addiction and obsessive–compulsive disorder (OCD) feature compulsive behavior as core features. Addiction is simply a compulsion toward a rewarding stimulus, whereas in OCD a compulsion is a facet of the disorder. The most common compulsions for people suffering from OCD are washing, and checking.

Since moving into the apartment the toilet has never been cleaned. Obsessive Compulsive Cleaners follows people who, by their own admission, cannot stop cleaning and carefully matches them with someone whose home is in dire need of a spring clean. Compulsive lying or pathological lying is not in the DSM anymore (was in the DSM 3) and therefore cannot be diagnosed on it's own. Due to this change, there are many beliefs and arguments about compulsive lying, what it is, and how to treat it. Here are some of the things I found: The person who struggles with compulsive lying tells lies that are just believable enough. They may be amazing stories or things they did that made them heroic, but you can't completely say for sure they are lying. It is also important to note that these lies are not due to a delusion. Stylistically the animation highlights the divide between the character and his attempt to control his increasingly malevolent environment. Performing these so-called "rituals," however, provides only temporary relief, and not performing them markedly increases anxiety.

Compulsive lying or pathological lying is not in the DSM anymore (was in the DSM 3) and therefore cannot be diagnosed on it's own. Due to this change, there are many beliefs and arguments about compulsive lying, what it is, and how to treat it.
Here are some of the things I found:
The person who struggles with compulsive lying tells lies that are just believable enough. They may be amazing stories or things they did that made them heroic, but you can't completely say for sure they are lying. It is also important to note that these lies are not due to a delusion. They know they are lying and upon confrontation they will admit that that they were lying. Also, there urge to lie doesn't come from any external force. They feel that they need to lie because their life isn't exciting enough. Lastly, all of the lies or stories they tell will place them in a favorable light.
As for treatment many argue that compulsive lying is part of other personality disorders and should be treated as such. The people who believe it should be it's own diagnosis; CBT or Behavioral Therapy tends to be best. This can help them recognize when the thoughts and urges to lie build up and how to stop them from acting out on that. I hope you found this helpful!

Compulsive lying or pathological lying is not in the DSM anymore (was in the DSM 3) and therefore cannot be diagnosed on it's own. Due to this change, there are many beliefs and arguments about compulsive lying, what it is, and how to treat it.
Here are some of the things I found:
The person who struggles with compulsive lying tells lies that are just believable enough. They may be amazing stories or things they did that made them heroic, but you can't completely say for sure they are lying. It is also important to note that these lies are not due to a delusion. They know they are lying and upon confrontation they will admit that that they were lying. Also, there urge to lie doesn't come from any external force. They feel that they need to lie because their life isn't exciting enough. Lastly, all of the lies or stories they tell will place them in a favorable light.
As for treatment many argue that compulsive lying is part of other personality disorders and should be treated as such. The people who believe it should be it's own diagnosis; CBT or Behavioral Therapy tends to be best. This can help them recognize when the thoughts and urges to lie build up and how to stop them from acting out on that. I hope you found this helpful!
