Gran Canaria is the second most populous island of Canary Island. Located in the Atlantic Ocean about 150 kilometers off the northwestern coast of Africa. Gran Canaria is located southeast of Tenerife and west of Fuerteventura. The island is of volcanic origin, mostly made of fissure vents.

Here Christmas Flowers and Bougainvilleas grow as big bushes, and Clematis climbs the Walls, and where Fig Cactus and Agaves stands side by side. Or you can take a Trip along the steep West Coast, or a Trip to the middle of the Island, 1949 m above Sea level.
If you have a 2 Week Vacation -- or more, it could be an adventure to visit one of the other Canary Islands, and Ferries and Planes are leaving to the other Islands on a daily basis from Las Palmas and Agaete. When leaving in the morning, it is possible to be back the same Day -- but you can find opportunities to stay the Night, direct from the Street. The smaller Islands are not so stamped by Tourists, so the possibilities of a different Vacation than you will find on one of the bigger Islands are great. Tickets to the other Islands are not expensive, so this type of Vacation is cheap.

Massentourismus oder Individualreise, beste Reisezeit, lokale Tipps und Abzockerfallen – all das stellt das neue Format vor. Begleitet vom Tourismusexperten des TÜV Rheinland reist ZDF Autor Jochen Schulze über die Insel, trifft Einheimische und Urlauber.
Wenn Olaf Seiche ein Hotel betritt, tut er das meistens nicht als normaler Urlauber. Der Tourismusexperte des TÜV Rheinland überprüft Hotels berufsmäßig und schaut deshalb besonders genau hin. In vielen preiswerten Unterkünften sind die Mängel offensichtlich: Reinigungsdefizite im Bad, lose Stromkabel, versiffte Pools. Doch auch in Hotels mit drei oder vier Sternen ist nicht alles so wie es sein sollte. Für den Feriencheck auf Gran Canaria schaut sich Olaf Seiche in der Touristenhochburg Maspalomas um, erklärt, wie man erfolgreich reklamiert und warum die Zahl der Hotel-Reklamationen in den letzten Jahren deutlich zugenommen hat.
Gran Canaria besteht jedoch nicht nur aus Bettenburgen und Massentourismus. In Aguimes, einem kleinen Bergdorf im Osten von Gran Canaria trifft Olaf Seiche den Deutschen Franz Miltenburg. Dieser lebt seit 2006 auf Gran Canaria und hat sich bei deutschen Aktivurlaubern einen Namen als Wanderführer und Organisator von individuellen Ferien gemacht. Miltenburg kennt die kleinen familiengeführten Hotels im Landesinneren, die netten Bars, in denen der Besitzer selbst noch hinter dem Tresen steht, und die versteckten Wanderrouten durch die Berge Gran Canarias. Wo viele Touristen hinreisen, da tummeln sich auch gerne Betrüger. Gran Canaria ist eine Hochburg der "Time-Sharing"-Drückerkolonnen. Mit der Aussicht auf kostenlose Eintrittskarten für Freizeitparks oder Gewinnspielpreise werden neu angekommene Urlauber in Verkaufsgespräche verwickelt. Ziel dieser Gespräche: den Gästen Urlaubsgutscheine aufzuschwatzen, die in der Summe völlig überteuert sind und am Ende oftmals verfallen, weil man zu den gewünschten Terminen keine Unterkünfte buchen kann. Gran Canaria (Spanish pronunciation: [ɡɾaŋ kaˈna.ɾja]; originally meaning 'Great [Island] of Dogs') is the second most populous island of the Canary Islands, with a population of 838,397 which constitutes approximately 40% of the population of the archipelago. Located in the Atlantic Ocean about 150 kilometers (~93 miles) off the northwestern coast of Africa and about 1350 km (~838 miles) from Europe.
Gran Canaria was populated by the Canarii (Guanches), who may have arrived as early as 500 BC. The Canarii called the island Tamarán or Land of the Brave. After over a century of European (French, Portuguese...) incursions and attempts at conquest, the island was conquered on April 29, 1483, after a campaign that lasted 5 years, by the Kingdom of Castile, with the support of Queen Isabella I, a conquest which turned out to be an important step towards the expansion of the unified Spain.
The capital city of Las Palmas was founded on June 24, 1478, under the name "Real de Las Palmas", by Juan Rejón, head of the invading Castilian army. In 1492, Christopher Columbus anchored in the Port of Las Palmas (and spent some time on the island) on his first trip to the Americas. Las Palmas is, jointly with Santa Cruz de Tenerife, the capital of the autonomous community of the Canary Islands.

Massentourismus oder Individualreise, beste Reisezeit, lokale Tipps und Abzockerfallen – all das stellt das neue Format vor. Begleitet vom Tourismusexperten des TÜV Rheinland reist ZDF Autor Jochen Schulze über die Insel, trifft Einheimische und Urlauber. Wenn Olaf Seiche ein Hotel betritt, tut er das meistens nicht als normaler Urlauber. Der Tourismusexperte des TÜV Rheinland überprüft Hotels berufsmäßig und schaut deshalb besonders genau hin. In vielen preiswerten Unterkünften sind die Mängel offensichtlich: Reinigungsdefizite im Bad, lose Stromkabel, versiffte Pools. Goldgelber, feiner Sand und ein flaches Atlantikufer bieten beste Bedingungen zum Baden und Sonnen. Der Strand ermöglicht lange Spaziergänge bis zur Dünenlandschaft von Maspalomas mit anschließender Dünenwanderung auf markierten Wegen in einem Naturphänomen auf Gran Canaria. Über 400 Hektar Sand bilden eine Landschaft wie in der Sahara, die zum Erhalt der eigenen Dünenflora seit 1987 unter Naturschutz steht. Ein Ortszentrum sucht man in Playa del Ingles vergebens. Nach einem erholsamen Strandtag lohnt sich ein Bummel über die Promenade Paseo Costa Canaria, an der zum Sonnenuntergang die Dünenlandschaft mit beeindruckenden Schattenspielen und Farbkontrasten für ein besonderes Naturkino sorgt. Zahlreiche Restaurants, Kneipen und Cafes an der Promenade laden nach dem Sonnenuntergang zum stimmungsvollen Tagesausklang ein. Seit 1970 wurde Puerto Rico förmlich aus dem Nichts erschaffen und die Appartmentanlagen wachsen bereits über die Seitentäler hinaus. Im Hafen starten Glasboden - Catamarane und Delfinbeoachtungsboote zu ihren Touren entlang der Küste und höhentaugliche Abenteurer können zu einem unvergesslichen Ausblick in die Höhe steigen. Eine Küstenpromenade verbindet Puerto Rico mit einem Traumstrand an der Südwestküste. Die Playa Amadores ist eine beliebte Badebucht für Paare und Familien, die hier eine paradiesische Kulisse bestehend aus kristallklarem Wasser und goldenem Strand geboten bekommen. Hauptmagnete für sonnenhungrige Mittel- und Nordeuropäer sind die zahlreichen Küstenorte im Süden von Gran Canaria.
Der bekannteste Sandstrand der Insel ist über 8 km lang und zieht sich in sanften Rundungen vom Ferienort San Agustin entlang der Touristensiedlungen des Küstenortes Playa del Ingles bis zur Dünenlandschaft von Maspalomas.
Der 3 km lange Strandabschnitt Playa del Ingles gehört zu den bekanntesten Badestränden der Welt und der gleichnamige Ort ist das Touristenzentrum der Südküste.
Goldgelber, feiner Sand und ein flaches Atlantikufer bieten beste Bedingungen zum Baden und Sonnen.
Der Strand ermöglicht lange Spaziergänge bis zur Dünenlandschaft von Maspalomas mit anschließender Dünenwanderung auf markierten Wegen in einem Naturphänomen auf Gran Canaria.
Über 400 Hektar Sand bilden eine Landschaft wie in der Sahara, die zum Erhalt der eigenen Dünenflora seit 1987 unter Naturschutz steht.
Ein Ortszentrum sucht man in Playa del Ingles vergebens.
Nach einem erholsamen Strandtag lohnt sich ein Bummel über die Promenade Paseo Costa Canaria, an der zum Sonnenuntergang die Dünenlandschaft mit beeindruckenden Schattenspielen und Farbkontrasten für ein besonderes Naturkino sorgt.
Zahlreiche Restaurants, Kneipen und Cafes an der Promenade laden nach dem Sonnenuntergang zum stimmungsvollen Tagesausklang ein.
Ein internationaler Urlaubermagnet an der Südspitze von Gran Canaria ist der Ferienort Maspalomas.
Begrenzt von den Dünen reihen sich im Ortsteil Campo international weitläufige Bungalow- Appartment- und Hotelanlagen sowie Golfplätze dicht aneinander.
Maspalomas wird als der älteste Ferienort Gran Canarias bezeichnet und bietet mit dem 68m hohen Leuchtturm El Faro ein weithin sichtbares Bauwerk direkt an der Strandpromenade.
Urlaubsgäste aus vielen Nationen bummeln täglich durch den berühmten Badeort und genießen dabei das moderne Flair entlang der Promenade und der Straßen, die von vielen Hotels und Fünf -- Sterne Ressorts sowie zahlreichen Restaurants gesäumt werden.
Anziehungspunkt für Badeurlauber ist der Strand von Maspolomas, der die westliche Verlängerung der Playa del Ingles darstellt.
Von diesem berühmten Sandstrand ist ein ausgedehnter Spaziergang entlang der goldgelben Dünen von Maspalomas in östliche Richtung möglich.
In südwestlicher Richtung von Maspalomas befindet sich ein weiterer sehenswerter Küstenort in einer imposanten Bucht -- Puerto Rico.
Mittelpunkt des Ortes ist der moderne Yachthafen mit weitläufigem Badestrand.
Seit 1970 wurde Puerto Rico förmlich aus dem Nichts erschaffen und die Appartmentanlagen wachsen bereits über die Seitentäler hinaus.
Im Hafen starten Glasboden - Catamarane und Delfinbeoachtungsboote zu ihren Touren entlang der Küste und höhentaugliche Abenteurer können zu einem unvergesslichen Ausblick in die Höhe steigen.
Eine Küstenpromenade verbindet Puerto Rico mit einem Traumstrand an der Südwestküste.

Rugged beauty born of fire and water, a volcanic paradise. And La Geria is a well-known wine growing region. FUERTEVENTURA is the second largest island of the Canary archipelago. In the extreme north of the island is Corralejo that developed into a ferry port and, within a fewdecades, a bustling holiday resort. GRAN CANARIA is the third largest of the seven Canary Islands. Las Palmas is the capital of the island and metropolis of the Canary archipelago, colourful and multicultural, with a great history. The palm lined Plaza Santa Ana is the centre of Vegueta in which both spiritual and temporal power have existed since the time of the conquistadors. Santa Ana Cathedra, an imposing brown stone building whose twin towers dominate the old town, has for centuries been the largest religious building in the Canary Islands. TENERIFE is known as the island of eternal spring. Santa Cruz De Tenerife, north east of the island, is its capital, port and commercial metropolis with classical buildings and splendid monuments that indicate its colourful past. The sandy beaches of Tenerife are shaded by the 3600 meters high Teide. One can take a look at Spain’s most beautiful zoo, while under the ‘Rock of Giants’ the tourists can befriend dolphins that live in the sea. In Gran Canaria one can take a trip up to the colorful empire of rocks, the nearly 2000 meters high Pico de Los Nieves. In the capital we can take long walks among the colonial style buildings with wooden balconies, and see the house, where Columbus was living. Near Maspalomas, we can take a look at a real sand desert. In the villages of Fuerteventura let us familiarize ourselves with the local buildings and take a trip on a camel. The island is a paradise for surfers, anglers and divers. On Lanzarote we can witness the force of nature; in the Timanfaya national park one can see geysers, volcanoes, which are still active, and also the epic work on Manrique, the Jamenos del Aqua, which is a combination of lookout towers, restaurants and swimming pools built into caves.
