EVE Online was inducted in The Museum of Modern Art (NY) in the Applied Design artistic category as one of the first 14 inaugural video games added to the permanent collection alongside Pac Man, Tetris, The Sims, and more. From March 2, 2013–January 20, 2014 it was part of an installation at MoMA, showcasing by the infographic video shown here, which features recordings made by EVE players going about their lives in New Eden on one particular day: December 9, 2012.

James Kalm quells his anticipation, and finally slips in to visit the Sigmar Polke (German, 1941--2010) retrospective. As a long time fan of "one of the most voraciously experimental artists of the 20th century" your corresponded will give viewers a walking tour through of this historic show. This retrospective is the first to encompass the unusually broad range of mediums Polke worked in during his five-decade career, including painting, photography, film, sculpture, drawings, prints, television, performance, and stained glass. James Kalm pumps his bike to the Museum of Modern Art to bring viewers a walking tour of the Cindy Sherman retrospective. Sherman is arguably one of the most prominent American artists of her day. In 2011 one of her photos was sold for 3.89 million dollars. She's been a prominent part of the New York art and fashion scene since the late seventies and is an acknowledged force behind the "Pictures Generation". This show traces the arch of Sherman's career from her days as a student in Buffalo, to the latest, large computer assisted photo murals she produced for the entrance to the exhibition galleries. Planning a trip to New York City? Get the inside scoop on the best way to tour the Museum of Modern Art, known as MoMA, in this travel video. Tip: Go on Friday between 4 and 8 to avoid the admission fee.
The MoMA is one of the most popular museums in New York City. It’s always super crowded, it’s also the most expensive museum in New York City, but it’s wonderful. The MoMa cost twenty-five dollars per person to go. One thing that I think is the most important thing at the MoMA you can do is go early. The place gets packed. And it’s not fun seeing art when there’s a million people try to look at the same painting or exhibit as you, so you know the earlier you can get there, beat the lines, beat the rush, you’ll be a much happier person. The food at the MoMA is great, there’s a formal restaurant which is delicious. There’s also a more casual restaurant which that’s in the MoMA, so that’s good for if you want to get a quick bite. The food is still very gourmet, not too expensive, it’s communal seating. and uh I’m always surprised with how good it is. One thing a lot of people probably don’t realize about the MoMA is that you get free audio tours. So, upon price of admission, you get a free little headset that you can listen to as you look around at the different exhibits. If you really want to get out of paying the admission to go to the MoMA, on Friday’s from four to eight it’s free. So, again get there early, enjoy your time there, and the exhibits are incredible. I mean, you you never know what you’re going to find there, but it’s always something really important and and something that when you go home and you tell your friends everyone is always jealous that you’ve gone to see it.

Modern art includes artistic works produced during the period extending roughly from the 1860s to the 1970s, and denotes the style and philosophy of the art produced during that era. The term is usually associated with art in which the traditions of the past have been thrown aside in a spirit of experimentation. Modern artists experimented with new ways of seeing and with fresh ideas about the nature of materials and functions of art. A tendency toward abstraction is characteristic of much modern art. More recent artistic production is often called Contemporary art or Postmodern art.
Modern art begins with the heritage of painters like Vincent van Gogh, Paul Cézanne, Paul Gauguin, Georges Seurat and Henri de Toulouse Lautrec all of whom were essential for the development of modern art. At the beginning of the 20th century Henri Matisse and several other young artists including the pre-cubist Georges Braque, André Derain, Raoul Dufy and Maurice de Vlaminck revolutionized the Paris art world with "wild", multi-colored, expressive landscapes and figure paintings that the critics called Fauvism. Henri Matisse's two versions of The Dance signified a key point in his career and in the development of modern painting. It reflected Matisse's incipient fascination with primitive art: the intense warm color of the figures against the cool blue-green background and the rhythmical succession of the dancing nudes convey the feelings of emotional liberation and hedonism.

The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) is an art museum in Midtown Manhattan in New York City, on 53rd Street, between Fifth and Sixth Avenues. It has been important in developing and collecting modernist art, and is often identified as the most influential museum of modern art in the world. The museum's collection offers an unparalleled overview of modern and contemporary art, including works of architecture and design, drawings, painting, sculpture, photography, prints, illustrated books and artist's books, film, and electronic media.
MoMA's library and archives hold over 300,000 books, artist books, and periodicals, as well as individual files on more than 70,000 artists. The archives contain primary source material related to the history of modern and contemporary art. It also houses a restaurant, The Modern, run by Alsace-born chef Gabriel Kreuther.
The idea for The Museum of Modern Art was developed in 1928 primarily by Abby Aldrich Rockefeller (wife of John D. Rockefeller Jr.) and two of her friends, Lillie P. Bliss and Mary Quinn Sullivan. They became known variously as "the Ladies", "the daring ladies" and "the adamantine ladies". They rented modest quarters for the new museum in the Heckscher Building at 730 Fifth Avenue (corner of Fifth Avenue and 57th Street) in Manhattan, and it opened to the public on November 7, 1929, nine days after the Wall Street Crash. Abby had invited A. Conger Goodyear, the former president of the board of trustees of the Albright Art Gallery in Buffalo, New York, to become president of the new museum. Abby became treasurer. At the time, it was America's premier museum devoted exclusively to modern art, and the first of its kind in Manhattan to exhibit European modernism.

Timothy Walter "Tim" Burton (born August 25, 1958) is an American film director, film producer, writer and artist. He is famous for quirky-themed movies such as Beetlejuice, Edward Scissorhands, The Nightmare Before Christmas, Ed Wood, Sleepy Hollow, Corpse Bride, Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, and Dark Shadows and for blockbusters such as Pee-wee's Big Adventure, Batman, Batman Returns, Planet of the Apes, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, and Alice in Wonderland, which was the second highest-grossing film of 2010, and the tenth highest-grossing film of all time.
Burton is known for using recurring collaborators on his works; among them are Johnny Depp, who has become a close friend of Burton since their first film together; musician Danny Elfman, who has composed for all but five of the films Burton has directed or produced; and domestic partner Helena Bonham Carter. He also wrote and illustrated the poetry book The Melancholy Death of Oyster Boy & Other Stories, published in 1997, and a compilation of his drawings, entitled The Art of Tim Burton, was released in 2009. Burton has directed 16 films and produced 12, as of 2012. His latest films are an adaptation of the soap opera Dark Shadows, released on May 10, 2012, and a remake of his 1984 short, Frankenweenie, scheduled to be released on October 5, 2012.

Ann Temkin, curator in the Department of Painting and Sculpture leads viewers through a brief walk-through and delivers an insightful explanation of the works. EVE Online was inducted in The Museum of Modern Art (NY) in the Applied Design artistic category as one of the first 14 inaugural video games added to the permanent collection alongside Pac Man, Tetris, The Sims, and more. Sigmar Polke "Alibis" 1963-2010 at the MUSEUM of MODERN ART Part I
James Kalm quells his anticipation, and finally slips in to visit the Sigmar Polke (German, 1941--2010) retrospective. As a long time fan of "one of the most voraciously experimental artists of the 20th century" your corresponded will give viewers a walking tour through of this historic show. This retrospective is the first to encompass the unusually broad range of mediums Polke worked in during his five-decade career, including painting, photography, film, sculpture, drawings, prints, television, performance, and stained glass. Cindy Sherman at THE MUSEUM OF MODERN ART
James Kalm pumps his bike to the Museum of Modern Art to bring viewers a walking tour of the Cindy Sherman retrospective. Sherman is arguably one of the most prominent American artists of her day. In 2011 one of her photos was sold for 3.89 million dollars. She's been a prominent part of the New York art and fashion scene since the late seventies and is an acknowledged force behind the "Pictures Generation". This show traces the arch of Sherman's career from her days as a student in Buffalo, to the latest, large computer assisted photo murals she produced for the entrance to the exhibition galleries. Includes extended excerpts from a discussion of Sherman's work between organizer Eva Respini and MoMA director Glen Lowery -

The MoMA is one of the most popular museums in New York City. It’s always super crowded, it’s also the most expensive museum in New York City, but it’s wonderful. The MoMa cost twenty-five dollars per person to go. One thing that I think is the most important thing at the MoMA you can do is go early. The place gets packed. And it’s not fun seeing art when there’s a million people try to look at the same painting or exhibit as you, so you know the earlier you can get there, beat the lines, beat the rush, you’ll be a much happier person. The food at the MoMA is great, there’s a formal restaurant which is delicious. There’s also a more casual restaurant which that’s in the MoMA, so that’s good for if you want to get a quick bite. The food is still very gourmet, not too expensive, it’s communal seating. and uh I’m always surprised with how good it is. One thing a lot of people probably don’t realize about the MoMA is that you get free audio tours. So, upon price of admission, you get a free little headset that you can listen to as you look around at the different exhibits. The MoMA is one of the most popular museums in New York City. It’s always super crowded, it’s also the most expensive museum in New York City, but it’s wonderful. The MoMa cost twenty-five dollars per person to go. One thing that I think is the most important thing at the MoMA you can do is go early. The place gets packed. And it’s not fun seeing art when there’s a million people try to look at the same painting or exhibit as you, so you know the earlier you can get there, beat the lines, beat the rush, you’ll be a much happier person. The food at the MoMA is great, there’s a formal restaurant which is delicious. There’s also a more casual restaurant which that’s in the MoMA, so that’s good for if you want to get a quick bite. The food is still very gourmet, not too expensive, it’s communal seating. and uh I’m always surprised with how good it is. One thing a lot of people probably don’t realize about the MoMA is that you get free audio tours. So, upon price of admission, you get a free little headset that you can listen to as you look around at the different exhibits. This retrospective is the first to encompass the unusually broad range of mediums Polke worked in during his five-decade career. Part II will continue with work from 1968 to 2010 and will include views of the "Color Experiment" paintings and "Uranium Pink" a series of works that were created using radioactive particles on photographic plates. A musical introduction is provided by Gimaugua.

In this special anniversary year for the museum building, the exhibition Painting in Space casts a new light on one of the most diverse and influential artists of modernism. Fernand Léger (1881–1955), a contemporary of Pablo Picasso and Georges braque, sought to synthesize the arts in his work.
He made films, created murals for private homes as well as public buildings such as the United Nations Headquarters in New york, and designed costumes, theater sets, and church windows. Painting in Space is the first retrospective that focuses on Fernand Léger’s murals. For Léger, an architectural draftsman by training, engaging with built spaces via painting was a major concern. He developed close ties to key figures of modern architecture around the world.
Painting in Space explores the fruits of this dialog and traces his development from the early 1920s to his death in 1955. It features fascinating and often unexpectedly experimental projects that reflect different types of collaboration.
The presentation examines Léger’s temporary and permanent painterly interventions in public and private spaces (houses, 26 apartments, churches, ships, world’s fairs, etc.) as well as unrealized projects with a selection of murals, related works, designs, sketches, and contemporary documents that con- textualize the works.
The point of departure for the exhibition is the mural Les Plongeurs (The Divers, 1942) for the home of the New York architect Wallace K. Harrison, which Peter and Irene Ludwig acquired especially for the museum building thirty years ago. The focus on murals, including works that have never before left their original location, is supplemented with paintings, sculptures, project sketches, and archival materials. Works in experimental film, graphic design, textile design (tapestries and carpets), as well as costume and theater set designs illuminate the murals in the context of the artist’s entire oeuvre.
For the first time, the exhibition brings together some 170 works as well as extensive source materials, with important loans from major European and American collections, including the Museum of Modern Art and the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Menil Collection in Houston, the Kunstmuseum Basel, the Centre Pompidou and the Centre national des arts plastiques in Paris, the Musée National Fernand Léger in Biot, the Dansmuseet Stockholm, the Centre Canadien d’Architecture in Montreal, the Charlotte Perriand Archives, and the Fondation Le Corbusier in Paris.

For The Museum of Modern Art’s 135th anniversary, we are very pleased to announce a pioneering change in the museum’s approach to curating performance. MoMA has served as a living archive of performance work since as early as the 1970s. In the 2010s, the museum began seriously acquiring dance work just as it had been acquiring visual artworks since its conception. The museum is proud to defend and preserve these momentous works of art, but with global decolonization and the demise of Western capitalism, an alternative epistemology of curation is called for. One of the most successful decolonization practices that helped bring an end to the age of global social inequity was the redistribution of wealth and power to people of color, women, transgender and queer-identifying individuals, people with disabilities, young people, and people experiencing poverty. We at MoMA recognize curation as a tool of power that grants individuals a platform to share their art and affords them access to resources that help support their practice. Thus, we have decided to redistribute this power, and will almost exclusively be curating marginalized individuals. In an unprecedented experiment, MoMA will offer prestigious artistic platforms such as artist residencies and solo shows to people who don’t even necessarily self-identify as an artist. This choice is made in response to the complication of boundaries between art, life, the world, and people that occurred in the early 2020s. MoMA would like to support this complication by rejecting the term “artist” as a way of meaningfully distinguishing between people, lifestyles, and work. This also serves to further distance art and art making from its previous ties to industry, commercialism and big business. Before the 2020s, to be considered a serious artist, one had to be privileged enough to be able to afford to devote their time to an art practice that was not easily lucrative, as well as be able to pay for art school, studio space and materials. MoMA gladly renounces these previous norms and actively works for the empowerment of all people as artists.
Our first artist in residence is Becca Warzer, an 8th grade middle schooler at North Shore High School on Long Island, where she lives. Becca has only recently expressed interest in dance, and cites the choreography class she took last semester as the beginning of her performance practice. As our first inclusive performer in residence, Becca will receive 10 hours of free studio time at Gibney Studios for Future Performance every week for the 2064-2065 season. In June, she will present work at the Sarah Michelson Space, MoMA’s premier performance venue. This is Becca’s first work in progress video, and these videos will serve to document her process over the course of her residency.

One of the most successful decolonization practices that helped bring an end to the age of global social inequity was the redistribution of wealth and power to people of color, women, transgender and queer-identifying individuals, people with disabilities, young people, and people experiencing poverty. We at MoMA recognize curation as a tool of power that grants individuals a platform to share their art and affords them access to resources that help support their practice. Thus, we have decided to redistribute this power, and will almost exclusively be curating marginalized individuals. In an unprecedented experiment, MoMA will offer prestigious artistic platforms such as artist residencies and solo shows to people who don’t even necessarily self-identify as an artist. This choice is made in response to the complication of boundaries between art, life, the world, and people that occurred in the early 2020s. MoMA would like to support this complication by rejecting the term “artist” as a way of meaningfully distinguishing between people, lifestyles, and work. This also serves to further distance art and art making from its previous ties to industry, commercialism and big business. Before the 2020s, to be considered a serious artist, one had to be privileged enough to be able to afford to devote their time to an art practice that was not easily lucrative, as well as be able to pay for art school, studio space and materials. MoMA gladly renounces these previous norms and actively works for the empowerment of all people as artists.
Our first artist in residence is Becca Warzer, an 8th grade middle schooler at North Shore High School on Long Island, where she lives. Becca has only recently expressed interest in dance, and cites the choreography class she took last semester as the beginning of her performance practice. As our first inclusive performer in residence, Becca will receive 10 hours of free studio time at Gibney Studios for Future Performance every week for the 2064-2065 season. In June, she will present work at the Sarah Michelson Space, MoMA’s premier performance venue. This is Becca’s first work in progress video, and these videos will serve to document her process over the course of her residency.

EVE was recently acquired with 13 other games into the New York Museum of Modern Art's permanent collection, and displayed in an ongoing exhibition titled „Applied Design". Alumnus Julia Hoffmann, creative director of advertising and graphic design at the Museum of Modern Art, New York, discusses her life and career. Born in Frankfurt, Germany, Hoffmann earned her BFA in Graphic Design in 2002 from the School of Visual Arts, where she now teaches.
As creative director of advertising and graphic design at The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), Julia Hoffmann oversees brand identity and design for exhibition graphics, advertising, signage and collateral projects for all of MoMA's exhibitions and programs. She leads a creative team to develop design solutions that enhance MoMA's brand in New York City and around the world.
Previously, Hoffmann was interactive art director for the Colorado-based advertising agency Crispin Porter + Bogusky, where her clients included Burger King, Microsoft and Volkswagen. She started her career working for Stephen Doyle and later for Paula Scher at Pentagram in New York, designing identities, branding systems, packaging and publication design for the Public Theater, Time magazine and the Metropolitan Opera. She was the lead designer on Jon Stewart's award-winning bestseller, America (The Book): A Citizen's Guide to Democracy Inaction.

Like lava from a volcano, Olafur Eliasson’s fascinating installation ‘Riverbed’ runs through the Danish Louisiana Museum of Modern Art. The highly praised artist here shares his intriguing thoughts behind the installation.
“The currency of trust” is the fundament on which ‘Riverbed’ is built - an installation that, according to Eliasson, bears resemblance to both the contemplative power of a Japanese garden as well as of ancient Pompeii after the destructive outbreak of Mount Vesuvius. In our society, a lot of things are defined by exclusion, and public institutions such as museums have to show that they have full trust in the artwork, the artist and the visitor in order for the latter to feel completely included. “If an audience feels trusted, then they dare to get involved”, says Eliasson. To fully experience the installation, the visitors have to feel comfortable destabilizing themselves on purpose, in this case e.g. by rethinking their way of walking on the many rocks of his work.
The concept of reality intrigues Eliasson, who finds that the way we engage in the world is based on our ‘model’, whether it be a social, cultural or other type of model: “The way we take in the world is not natural, it’s cultural.” Thereby, it becomes a construction in which “the authorship of reality lies within the beholder and the museum is constituted by the visitor.” In other words, reality becomes the way in which you choose to perceive or handle your model. ‘Riverbed’ is thus a part of this unreality, for as Eliasson concludes, “There are no real things.”
Olafur Eliasson (b. 1967) works with sculpture, painting, photography, film and installations. He grew up in Iceland and Denmark and studied at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine arts from 1989-1995. In 1995 he moved to Berlin where he founded Studio Olafur Eliasson. Eliasson is behind many major exhibitions and projects around the world, such as ‘The Weather Project’ at Tate Modern’s Turbine Hall in 2003, ‘Take Your Time: Olafur Eliasson’ organized by SFMOMA in 2007, which travelled until 2010 to major venues such the Museum of Modern Art, New York, and ‘Riverbed’ at Louisiana Museum of Modern Art, Denmark in 2014. Among Eliasson’s projects in public space are ‘Green River’, carried out in various cities from 1998-2001 and ‘The Serpentine Gallery Pavilion’ in 2007 in collaboration with Kjetil Thorsen of Snøhetta. He lives and works in Copenhagen and Berlin.

Pioneering choreographer Yvonne Rainer presented the East Coast premiere of her ongoing work-in-progress “The Concept of Dust, or How do you look when there's nothing left to move?” at MoMA in June 2015.
Interweaving formal dance with personal themes of aging and mortality, humor, and diverse texts—intermittently read by Rainer and the dancers, the performers in "The Concept of Dust" have been given the freedom to initiate and/or abort the movement phrases as they wish, making spontaneous decisions throughout the 45-minute duration of the piece.

Pioneering choreographer Yvonne Rainer presented the East Coast premiere of her ongoing work-in-progress “The Concept of Dust, or How do you look when there's nothing left to move?” at MoMA in June 2015.
Interweaving formal dance with personal themes of aging and mortality, humor, and diverse texts—intermittently read by Rainer and the dancers, the performers in "The Concept of Dust" have been given the freedom to initiate and/or abort the movement phrases as they wish, making spontaneous decisions throughout the 45-minute duration of the piece.
