From NASA's Scientific Visualization Studio. A new study using observations from NASA's Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope reveals the first clear-cut evidence that the expanding debris of exploded stars produces some of the fastest-moving matter in the universe. This discovery is a major step toward meeting one of Fermi's primary mission goals.
Cosmic rays are subatomic particles that move through space at nearly the speed of light. About 90 percent of them are protons, with the remainder consisting of electrons and atomic nuclei. In their journey across the galaxy, the electrically charged particles become deflected by magnetic fields. This scrambles their paths and makes it impossible to trace their origins directly.
Through a variety of mechanisms, these speedy particles can lead to the emission of gamma rays, the most powerful form of light and a signal that travels to us directly from its sources. Two supernova remnants, known as IC 443 and W44, are expanding into cold, dense clouds of interstellar gas. This material emits gamma rays when struck by high-speed particles escaping the remnants.
Scientists have been unable to ascertain which particle is responsible for this emission because cosmic-ray protons and electrons give rise to gamma rays with similar energies. Now, after analyzing four years of data, Fermi scientists see a gamma-ray feature from both remnants that, like a fingerprint, proves the culprits are protons.
When cosmic-ray protons smash into normal protons, they produce a short-lived particle called a neutral pion. The pion quickly decays into a pair of gamma rays. This emission falls within a specific band of energies associated with the rest mass of the neutral pion, and it declines steeply toward lower energies. Detecting this low-end cutoff is clear proof that the gamma rays arise from decaying pions formed by protons accelerated within the supernova remnants.

If they exist, mini blackholes produced by cosmic ray collisions on earth would slip straight through because the earth isn't dense enough. But not the protons themselves."

Στο ρεφρέν κυρίαρχο ρόλο έχουν οι ηλεκτρικές κιθάρες, οι rock ρυθμοί και τα ηλεκτρονικά στοιχειά που όλα μαζί προσδίδουν ένα ευρύ ηχητικό φάσμα που απογειώνει την σύνθεση. Μετά από 7 χρόνια δισκογραφικής απουσίας οι Cosmicray το indie, rock/pop συγκρότημα από την Ξάνθη, επιστρέφει ανανεωμένο με νέο single που έχει τίτλο "Fly Μy Love" καθώς και με διαφορετική σύνθεση, αφού τα φωνητικά έχει αναλάβει η Χριστεφανία Λουκίδου.
Το αγγλόφωνο project του Άγγελου Μουρβάτη που μας άφησε τις καλύτερες εντυπώσεις με το πρώτο του album "Love is" (2007), κερδίζοντας την εκτίμηση του μουσικού τύπου, rock ραδιοφώνων και μουσικά υποψιασμένων ακροατών, έρχεται με το νέο του single να μας υπενθυμίσει ότι η εμπνευσμένη σύνθεση και η καλή μουσική δεν έχει σύνορα και στεγανά, αλλά μπορεί να δημιουργηθεί παντού!
Το "Fly My Love" από τους Cosmicray περιλαμβάνει όλα εκείνα τα βασικά στοιχεία ενός κλασικού Rock Anthem αναμιγνύοντας τα με μοντέρνες φόρμες και πολλές ηλεκτρονικές πινελιές. Άξια μνείας πρέπει να χαρακτηριστούν οι εξαιρετικοί στίχοι του Θέμη Στεφάνου και η πανέμορφη ερμηνεία από την Χριστεφανία. Όλα τα παραπάνω ως "κοσμική ακτίνα" μας απογειώνουν στον ρυθμό του.

Cosmic rays are energetic charged subatomic particles, originating in outer space. They may produce secondary particles that penetrate the Earth's atmosphere and surface. The term ray is historical as cosmic rays were thought to be electromagnetic radiation. Most primary cosmic rays (those that enter the atmosphere from deep space) are composed of familiar stable subatomic particles that normally occur on Earth, such as protons, atomic nuclei, or electrons. However, a very small fraction are stable particles of antimatter, such as positrons or antiprotons, and the precise nature of this remaining fraction is an area of active research.
About 89% of cosmic rays are simple protons or hydrogen nuclei, 10% are helium nuclei or alpha particles, and 1% are the nuclei of heavier elements. These nuclei constitute 99% of the cosmic rays. Solitary electrons (much like beta particles, although their ultimate source is unknown) constitute much of the remaining 1%.

A new study using observations from NASA's Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope reveals the first clear-cut evidence that the expanding debris of exploded stars produces some of the fastest-moving matter in the universe. This discovery is a major step toward meeting one of Fermi's primary mission goals. Cosmic rays are subatomic particles that move through space at nearly the speed of light. About 90 percent of them are protons, with the remainder consisting of electrons and atomic nuclei. In their journey across the galaxy, the electrically charged particles become deflected by magnetic fields. This scrambles their paths and makes it impossible to trace their origins directly. Through a variety of mechanisms, these speedy particles can lead to the emission of gamma rays, the most powerful form of light and a signal that travels to us directly from its sources. Two supernova remnants, known as IC 443 and W44, are expanding into cold, dense clouds of interstellar gas. This material emits gamma rays when struck by high-speed particles escaping the remnants. Scientists have been unable to ascertain which particle is responsible for this emission because cosmic-ray protons and electrons give rise to gamma rays with similar energies. Now, after analyzing four years of data, Fermi scientists see a gamma-ray feature from both remnants that, like a fingerprint, proves the culprits are protons. When cosmic-ray protons smash into normal protons, they produce a short-lived particle called a neutral pion. The pion quickly decays into a pair of gamma rays. This emission falls within a specific band of energies associated with the rest mass of the neutral pion, and it declines steeply toward lower energies. Detecting this low-end cutoff is clear proof that the gamma rays arise from decaying pions formed by protons accelerated within the supernova remnants. The video show a compilation of protons interactions, electromagnetic shower and cosmic ray spallation in a Phywe PJ45 cloud chamber at 2877 m. The sequences come from 8 hours of recording with a HD camera. Dimension of the surface of the machine is 45x45 cm. There is no magnetic field in the chamber; The cloud chamber was temporarily put in the Pic du Midi (French Observatory in the Pyrenees) in 2012 for the 100th anniversary of the discovery of cosmic ray. As this altitude, there is about 10 times more neutron and proton than in sea level. Theses particles can interact with the matter and break some nucleus which release other protons and neutrons, alpha particles or deuteron. The density of ionisation in a trail is proportionnal to z²/v² where z is the charge of the particle and v it's velocity. Thus, a proton with a low kinetic energy will make more ionization so the trail will be bigger than the trail of a high energy proton. A 5 MeV (0.1c) proton have a range of 34 cm in air, a 10 MeV one, 1.1 m. The range of an alpha particle of 10 MeV in air is 10.4 cm. Their is also higly energetic gamma ray (or energetic incoming electrons !), which can make electromagnetic shower (electrons and positon) in the matter (wall of the room, or wall of the machine which is made with 1 cm of glass). Single e+/e- comes from muon or Pi0 decay, or from the 3 interactions process of gamma in matter (photoelectric, compton and pair creation). Cosmic rays are subatomic particles that move through space at nearly the speed of light. About 90 percent of them are protons, with the remainder consisting of electrons and atomic nuclei. In their journey across the galaxy, the electrically charged particles become deflected by magnetic fields. This scrambles their paths and makes it impossible to trace their origins directly.
Through a variety of mechanisms, these speedy particles can lead to the emission of gamma rays, the most powerful form of light and a signal that travels to us directly from its sources. Two supernova remnants, known as IC 443 and W44, are expanding into cold, dense clouds of interstellar gas. This material emits gamma rays when struck by high-speed particles escaping the remnants.
Scientists have been unable to ascertain which particle is responsible for this emission because cosmic-ray protons and electrons give rise to gamma rays with similar energies. Now, after analyzing four years of data, Fermi scientists see a gamma-ray feature from both remnants that, like a fingerprint, proves the culprits are protons.
When cosmic-ray protons smash into normal protons, they produce a short-lived particle called a neutral pion. The pion quickly decays into a pair of gamma rays. This emission falls within a specific band of energies associated with the rest mass of the neutral pion, and it declines steeply toward lower energies. Detecting this low-end cutoff is clear proof that the gamma rays arise from decaying pions formed by protons accelerated within the supernova remnants.

Από τα πρώτα δευτερόλεπτα ακρόασης του “Look Up” αυτό που θα σου τραβήξει την προσοχή είναι η μελωδία του πιάνου και της φωνής που ταιριάζουν αρμονικά με την έντονη συναισθηματικά ερμηνεία και τα λυρικά ξεσπάσματα. Στο ρεφρέν κυρίαρχο ρόλο έχουν οι ηλεκτρικές κιθάρες, οι rock ρυθμοί και τα ηλεκτρονικά στοιχειά που όλα μαζί προσδίδουν ένα ευρύ ηχητικό φάσμα που απογειώνει την σύνθεση. Tην παραγωγή του τραγουδιού υπογράφει ο P.X. Harris (Universal Trilogy).

Μετά από 7 χρόνια δισκογραφικής απουσίας οι Cosmicray το indie, rock/pop συγκρότημα από την Ξάνθη, επιστρέφει ανανεωμένο με νέο single που έχει τίτλο "Fly Μy Love" καθώς και με διαφορετική σύνθεση, αφού τα φωνητικά έχει αναλάβει η Χριστεφανία Λουκίδου.
Το αγγλόφωνο project του Άγγελου Μουρβάτη που μας άφησε τις καλύτερες εντυπώσεις με το πρώτο του album "Love is" (2007), κερδίζοντας την εκτίμηση του μουσικού τύπου, rock ραδιοφώνων και μουσικά υποψιασμένων ακροατών, έρχεται με το νέο του single να μας υπενθυμίσει ότι η εμπνευσμένη σύνθεση και η καλή μουσική δεν έχει σύνορα και στεγανά, αλλά μπορεί να δημιουργηθεί παντού!
Το "Fly My Love" από τους Cosmicray περιλαμβάνει όλα εκείνα τα βασικά στοιχεία ενός κλασικού Rock Anthem αναμιγνύοντας τα με μοντέρνες φόρμες και πολλές ηλεκτρονικές πινελιές. Άξια μνείας πρέπει να χαρακτηριστούν οι εξαιρετικοί στίχοι του Θέμη Στεφάνου και η πανέμορφη ερμηνεία από την Χριστεφανία. Όλα τα παραπάνω ως "κοσμική ακτίνα" μας απογειώνουν στον ρυθμό του.

A new study using observations from NASA's Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope reveals the first clear-cut evidence that the expanding debris of exploded stars produces some of the fastest-moving matter in the universe. This discovery is a major step toward meeting one of Fermi's primary mission goals.
Cosmic rays are subatomic particles that move through space at nearly the speed of light. About 90 percent of them are protons, with the remainder consisting of electrons and atomic nuclei. In their journey across the galaxy, the electrically charged particles become deflected by magnetic fields. This scrambles their paths and makes it impossible to trace their origins directly.
Through a variety of mechanisms, these speedy particles can lead to the emission of gamma rays, the most powerful form of light and a signal that travels to us directly from its sources.
Two supernova remnants, known as IC 443 and W44, are expanding into cold, dense clouds of interstellar gas. This material emits gamma rays when struck by high-speed particles escaping the remnants.
Scientists have been unable to ascertain which particle is responsible for this emission because cosmic-ray protons and electrons give rise to gamma rays with similar energies. Now, after analyzing four years of data, Fermi scientists see a gamma-ray feature from both remnants that, like a fingerprint, proves the culprits are protons.
When cosmic-ray protons smash into normal protons, they produce a short-lived particle called a neutral pion. The pion quickly decays into a pair of gamma rays. This emission falls within a specific band of energies associated with the rest mass of the neutral pion, and it declines steeply toward lower energies.
Detecting this low-end cutoff is clear proof that the gamma rays arise from decaying pions formed by protons accelerated within the supernova remnants.

The video show a compilation of protons interactions, electromagnetic shower and cosmic ray spallation in a Phywe PJ45 cloud chamber at 2877 m. The sequences come from 8 hours of recording with a HD camera. Dimension of the surface of the machine is 45x45 cm. There is no magnetic field in the chamber;
The cloud chamber was temporarily put in the Pic du Midi (French Observatory in the Pyrenees) in 2012 for the 100th anniversary of the discovery of cosmic ray.
As this altitude, there is about 10 times more neutron and proton than in sea level. Theses particles can interact with the matter and break some nucleus which release other protons and neutrons, alpha particles or deuteron. The density of ionisation in a trail is proportionnal to z²/v² where z is the charge of the particle and v it's velocity. Thus, a proton with a low kinetic energy will make more ionization so the trail will be bigger than the trail of a high energy proton. A 5 MeV (0.1c) proton have a range of 34 cm in air, a 10 MeV one, 1.1 m.
The range of an alpha particle of 10 MeV in air is 10.4 cm.
Their is also higly energetic gamma ray (or energetic incoming electrons !), which can make electromagnetic shower (electrons and positon) in the matter (wall of the room, or wall of the machine which is made with 1 cm of glass). Single e+/e- comes from muon or Pi0 decay, or from the 3 interactions process of gamma in matter (photoelectric, compton and pair creation).

There are two supposed correlations:
Svensmark and Friis Kristensen wrote a paper on a correlation between sunspots and temperature during the 20th century, which they attributed to the varying intensity of cosmic rays with solar activity. However, this turned out to be the result of a mathematical error. Cosmic rays have been measured over the last 50 years and they vary with the 11-year solar cycle. There has been no increase at all, whereas average global temperatures have been increasing.
Shaviv and Veiser wrote a paper on a correlation between cosmic rays caused by the Earth's passage through our galaxy's spiral arms and global temperature over the last 500 million years. But Rahmstorf and others showed that Shaviv and Veizer may have misinterpreted the meteorite data on which the periodicity that passage was calculated, and the model doesn't fit the data well anyway (by comparison, there's an almost perfect correlation between CO2 levsla dn global temps over the same period.) while the press release that accompanied Shaviv and Veizer's paper announced that their results showed that recent global warming can be explained by galactic cosmic rays, the paper itself said that that recent global warming canNOT be explained by galactic cosmic rays. As I said in my video, read the scientific papers, not the blogs.

I described CERN as the European particle accelerator; in fact it is the organization that runs that project, as well as many others.

Nir Shaviv Cosmic Rays, Solar Forcing and 20th Century Climate Change The 20th Century has seen a notable temperature rise, generally attributed to the greenhouse effect of anthropogenic gases, and a future "business as usual" policy is generally believed to be catastrophic. However, significant evidence indicates that the sun plays a major role in climate change. We will review the evidence which proves the existence and quantifies the physical mechanism linking between solar activity and climate—galactic cosmic ray ionization of the atmosphere and its effect on cloud cover. We will also discuss the experiment carried out to pinpoint the exact mechanism. We will see that once the link is taken into account, a much more consistent picture for the 20th century global warming is obtained. ... -

Joint IAS/Princeton University Astrophysics Colloquium Tuesday, October 13, 2015 http://www.sns.ias.edu/~seminar/colloquia.shtml Cosmic rays comprise only about one billionth of interstellar particles in the Milky Way, but have as much energy as the thermal gas. Low energy cosmic rays affect the chemistry and thermodynamics of interstellar through collisional processes. Higher energy cosmic rays affect interstellar gas dynamics collisionlessly, though coupling to plasma waves. I will discuss the interactions between the cosmic rays and gas in the collisionless regime and discuss applications to galactic outflows, cosmic ray transport in galaxy clusters, and the propagation of cosmic rays through the intergalactic medium. The 20th Century has seen a notable temperature rise, generally attributed to the greenhouse effect of anthropogenic gases, and a future "business as usual" policy is generally believed to be catastrophic. However, significant evidence indicates that the sun plays a major role in climate change. We will review the evidence which proves the existence and quantifies the physical mechanism linking between solar activity and climate—galactic cosmic ray ionization of the atmosphere and its effect on cloud cover. We will also discuss the experiment carried out to pinpoint the exact mechanism. We will see that once the link is taken into account, a much more consistent picture for the 20th century global warming is obtained. In it, climate sensitivity is low and future climate change is benign.

The current understanding of climate change in the industrial age is that it is predominantly caused by anthropogenic greenhouse gases, with relatively small natural contributions due to solar irradiance and volcanoes. However, palaeoclimatic reconstructions show that the climate has frequently varied on 100-year time scales during the Holocene (last 10 kyr) by amounts comparable to the present warming - and yet the mechanism or mechanisms are not understood. Some of these reconstructions show clear associations with solar variability, which is recorded in the light radio-isotope archives that measure past variations of cosmic ray intensity. However, despite the increasing evidence of its importance, solar-climate variability is likely to remain controversial until a physical mechanism is established. Estimated changes of solar irradiance on these time scales appear to be too small to account for the climate observations. This raises the question of whether cosmic rays may directly affect the climate, providing an effective indirect solar forcing mechanism. Indeed recent satellite observations - although disputed - suggest that cosmic rays may affect clouds. This talk presents an overview of the palaeoclimatic evidence for solar/cosmic ray forcing of the climate, and reviews the possible physical mechanisms. These will be investigated in the CLOUD experiment which begins to take data at the CERN PS later this year.

Dr. Trenton Franz from the University of Arizona discusses ecosystem scale measurements of water using cosmic-ray neutrons and the COSMOS (Cosmic-ray Soil Moisture Observing System) project.
The recently developed cosmic-ray method for measuring soil moisture over a horizontal footprint of hectometers and the depth of decimeters is currently being implemented in the COsmic-ray Soil Moisture Observing System (COSMOS). Currently 60 probes are operational in the continental USA with future expansion consisting of a network with 500 probes. The probe measures cosmic-ray neutrons that are generated within air and soil and are moderated mainly by hydrogen atoms in soil water, and emitted to the atmosphere where they form a well-mixed reservoir of neutrons whose density is inversely correlated with soil moisture. Here I will present a general overview of the COSMOS project and cosmic-ray method for measuring soil moisture. In addition I will present some recent work on quantifying other pools of hydrogen inside the probe support volume, most notably biomass, and a summary of mobile measurements used to quantify basin-scale soil moisture patterns. Given the new scale of observations and ability to quantify various pools of hydrogen, this measurement technique is an exciting advance with clear implications in hydrology, ecology, terrestrial hydrometerology, agronomy, and remote sensing.

Gamma brain waves are the fastest brainwave frequency with the smallest amplitude. They are associated with the "feeling of blessings" reported by experienced meditators such as monks and nuns, and with peak concentration and extremely high levels of cognitive functioning.
Neuroscientists believe that gamma waves are able to link information from all parts of the brain -- the gamma wave originates in the thalamus and moves from the back of the brain to the front and back again 40 times per second -- not only that, but the entire brain is influenced by the gamma wave. This rapid "full sweep" action makes the gamma state one of peak mental and physical performance. Gamma is the brainwave state of being "in the Zone," that feeling that you can do anything.
Listen to this track as much or as little as you feel comfortable, either sitting or lying in a settled position. We always recommend using headphones for optimal results, however this is not essential.

They destroy tissues, accelerate aging and initiate cancer. Atmosphere protects us from them. Astronauts planning to visit planet Mars will be exposed to this deadly radiation and may never reach Mars.
Nevertheless they may be protected. Here I describe experiments showing how to protect mice from cosmic rays.
In the sixties of the previous century Argonne National Laboratory conducted experiments to examine how dangerous radiation Mice were exposed all their lives to a background gamma ray radiation, The longer they lived the greater their chance to die a natural (non-irradiated) death. In other words, not all mice in this study were killed by gamma rays. These mice might reach Mars. What is their secret?
The mouse in the gamma room continually learns how to optimize itself in hazardous environment. It gains a new insight which gamma rays bring about (trigger). This creativity is manifested by another biological phenomenon called hormesis.
Hormesis is a biphasic dose-response phenomenon characterized by a low-dose stimulation and a high-dose inhibition.
The gamma exposure room of Argonne National Lab might regard it as a mice training facility to cope with caesium radiation. Outcome depends on perturbation intensity and training time. Mice which died natural death without radiation damage accumulated enough hormesis to reach planet Mars.

Cosmic rays comprise only about one billionth of interstellar particles in the Milky Way, but have as much energy as the thermal gas. Low energy cosmic rays affect the chemistry and thermodynamics of interstellar through collisional processes. Higher energy cosmic rays affect interstellar gas dynamics collisionlessly, though coupling to plasma waves. I will discuss the interactions between the cosmic rays and gas in the collisionless regime and discuss applications to galactic outflows, cosmic ray transport in galaxy clusters, and the propagation of cosmic rays through the intergalactic medium.
