Anchor, Shropshire

Anchor is a remote hamlet in southwest Shropshire, England. The hamlet is the most westerly place in Shropshire.

Geography

Anchor lies only 400 metres away from the border with Wales. The B4368 road runs through the hamlet on its way between the towns of Clun (in England) to Newtown (in Wales). The road reaches an elevation of 389 metres (1,276 ft), making it the highest classified road in Shropshire. The point at which the B4368 crosses over the Nant Rhuddwr (a small watercourse that runs along this part of the English-Welsh border; also known as the Rhuddwr Brook in English) into Wales is known as Anchor Bridge. Anchor is also the most westerly settlement in England on the English-Welsh border, with the most westerly point of the border being approximately 1.5 miles to the southwest. The tri-point of Shropshire, Montgomeryshire and Radnorshire is near this most westerly point, located at the confluence of the Nant Rhydyfedw and the Nant Rhuddwr.

Anchor

An anchor is a device, normally made of metal, used to connect a vessel to the bed of a body of water to prevent the craft from drifting due to wind or current. The word derives from Latin ancora, which itself comes from the Greek ἄγκυρα (ankura).

Anchors can either be temporary or permanent. Permanent anchors are used in the creation of a mooring, and are rarely moved; a specialist service is normally needed to move or maintain them. Vessels carry one or more temporary anchors, which may be of different designs and weights.

A sea anchor is a drogue, not in contact with the seabed, used to control a drifting vessel.

Overview

Anchors achieve holding power either by "hooking" into the seabed, or via sheer mass, or a combination of the two. Permanent moorings use large masses (commonly a block or slab of concrete) resting on the seabed. Semi-permanent mooring anchors (such as mushroom anchors) and large ship's anchors derive a significant portion of their holding power from their mass, while also hooking or embedding in the bottom. Modern anchors for smaller vessels have metal flukes which hook on to rocks on the bottom or bury themselves in soft seabed.

Ryan Miller

Ryan Dean Miller (born July 17, 1980) is an American professional ice hockey goaltender currently playing for the Vancouver Canucks of the National Hockey League (NHL). Miller was drafted 138th overall by the Buffalo Sabres in the 1999 NHL Entry Draft. In 2010, he won the Vezina Trophy as the league's best goaltender.

He was selected to play for the United States in the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver as the team's starting goaltender. He won a silver medal with the team and was named most valuable player of the tournament. Four years later, he was selected for the 2014 Winter Olympics. Miller is one of 30 goaltenders in NHL history to win 300 games in his career.

Miller is known for his hybrid style of goaltending. He is also the older brother of current Detroit Red Wings winger Andrew Miller.

Early life

Miller grew up in East Lansing, Michigan. In youth hockey, Miller originally played as a forward. However, Miller became frustrated with the poor play of his team's goaltender, so he begged his coach as well as his father, Dean Miller, to let him try it out. His father told him that if he could get two goals and three assists the next game he would buy Ryan a catching glove. Miller finished the game with two goals and three assists in the win. His brother Drew is currently a forward for the Detroit Red Wings and three cousins (Kelly Miller, Kip Miller and Kevin Miller) all played in the NHL. All five attended Michigan State University, where Ryan Miller played goalie for four years.
