This video is totally different from the other videos I usually post. I thought it might be helpful for those searching the web nervously, trying to prepare for an upcoming court appearance. Whether you are the lawyer or the client I want you to be prepared. Some of these tips might seem like common sense but you would be amazed at what I've seen, especially from innocent nonnative people that aren't familiar with this "custom". I actually got this idea after watching the show How to Get Away With Murder on ABC one night. The defendants appearance was drastically different when in the court room compared to her attire outside. I hope I could help easy some of your fears. Court dress comprises the style of clothes prescribed for courts of law, and formerly for royal courts.
Court dress is worn at hearings in open court in all Senior Courts of England and Wales and in county courts. However, court dress may be dispensed with at the option of the judge, e.g. in very hot weather, and invariably where it may intimidate children, e.g. in the Family Division and at the trials of minors. In the Supreme Court of the United Kingdom and in the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council counsel wear court dress, but their Lordships are dressed in conventional business attire.
Court dress is not worn at hearings in chambers and in the magistrates' courts.

English advocates (whether barristers or solicitors) who appear before a judge who is robed, or before the Supreme Court of the United Kingdom or Judicial Committee of the Privy Council, must themselves be robed.
All male advocates wear a white stiff wing collar with bands (two strips of linen about 5"/13 cm by 1"/25 mm hanging down the front of the neck). They also wear either a dark double-breasted suit (or with waistcoat if single-breasted) or a black coat and waistcoat and grey pinstriped trousers. The black coat and waistcoat can be combined into a single garment, which is simply a waistcoat with sleeves, known as a bar jacket or court waistcoat. Female advocates also wear a dark suit, but often wear bands attached to a collarette rather than a wing collar.

Grand Duke Michael had asked his mother to lend him a big diamond clip to wear as an aigrette in his fur cap. The clip was of fabulous value; it had belonged to Emperor Paul I, and the Dowager Empress wore it very seldom. She lent it to her son most reluctantly.
"And Michael lost it! It must have fallen off his cap while he was dancing. My mother and he were in despair - the clip being one of the crown jewels. All the halls at the palace were searched that very night. At dawn the detectives searched from basement to attic. The diamond clip was never found. "

One of the first methods a juror will use to size-up an expert is the manner in which the expert is dressed. Experts should consult with counsel as to what is appropriate to wear. Experts are well advised to avoid expensive or gaudy jewelry, dark or tinted glasses, dress casual shoes such as loafers, expensive or loud clothing, and any pins or labels that make a statement.
Traditional, conservative dress sends a message that the expert is a serious, thoughtful professional. Dress that is not conservative may distract the jury from your testimony.
