The Royal Burgh of Lauder (Scottish Gaelic: Labhdar) is a town in the Scottish Borders in the historic county of Berwickshire. On the Southern Upland Way, the burgh lies 27 miles south east of Edinburgh, on the western edge of the Lammermuir Hills.
Medieval history
Although Lauder sits in the valley of Leader Water, Watson notes that the names Lauder and Leader appear to be unconnected. In the earliest sources Lauder appears as Lauuedder and Louueder.
Below Lauder are the lands of Kedslie which were bounded on the west by a road called "Malcolm's rode," and it is thought this formed part of the Roman road known as Dere Street, which passed through Lauder. Hardie suggests that it had been reconditioned by Malcolm III for use in his almost constant warfare against England. It is the only old road in Scotland that is associated with the name of an individual person.
The ancient settlement was further up the hills on the edge of the Moor. Its name is unknown, but it was tiny. The New Statistical Account of Scotland (vol.II) says that the present town of Lauder existed as a kirk-town in the time of David I (1124–53), and Sir J.D.Marwick says, in his preface to the Records of Convention, that the present town of Lauder existed in the latter half of the twelfth century. The town was once surrounded by walls with gates commonly referred to as 'ports'. Two major mills, which dated from the 12th century, also served the town.

Francis Sempill was the third of the Sempills, Lairds of Beltrees in Renfrewshire, to win fame as a humorist. His grandfather was Sir James Sempill, author of the 16th century satire "Packman's Paternoster"; his father Robert wrote the famous elegy on Habbie Simpson, "The Piper of Kilbarchan" which helped to give Scotland and Burns the famous Scots stanza, or, as it is sometimes known, The Habbie Simpson stanza. Francis Sempill has also had attributed to him, The Blythsome Bridal". His authorship to both has been disputed mainly because it is based on the unconfirmed claims of his grandchildren.
I was not certain of the pronunciation of the surname, "Lauder" and tried to make it sound like a cross between "Louder" and "Lorder".
As with most of the songs from this collection I have devised my own chord progression to suit my finger-picking style of playing, and it should work ok for strumming if you so desire.

Who had not heard of this name, the name of the famous Scottish comedian, but how many know what the origin of the name was?
It is not, however, as one might suspect from the costume so often worn by its widely known bearer, a Highland name. It is just a place name, indicating that the original Lauders came from or dwelt in that section.
Lauder is a burgh in the County of Berwick, Scotland, near Edinburgh. Near it is the Castle of Thirlestane, which in olden days was the seat of the Earl of Lauderdale.
Such names as these grew up naturally as addition to given names at the period when populations were increasing so rapidly that given names were no longer sufficiently numerous to indicate a man’s identity. The name of the place in which a man dwelt or that where he had previously dwelt often was added to his given name to distinguish him from others in the same community of the same name. In the course of time their descriptive meaning became lost and they were accepted merely as the tags of the individual or families. Just as the meanings of given names were easily lost in the thoughts of the population where identity was indicated.

The Lauder name is believed to have Norman roots, with the family settling in the Berwickshire area of Scotland during the medieval period. Robert de Laverdre, who obtained lands from Malcolm Canmore, is often considered the progenitor of the Lauder clan. Over time, the family became influential landowners, holding estates in various parts of Berwickshire.
Throughout its history, Clan Lauder has produced individuals who played significant roles in Scottish society. Sir Robert de Luedre, a prominent figure, witnessed a charter to the Abbey of Dryburgh. William de Lawedre served as the sheriff of Penthshire during the reign of Alexander III, demonstrating the family’s involvement in governance.
The Lauders’ possession of the Bass Rock in the Firth of Forth since 1297 showcases their connection to strategic locations in Scotland. This rocky island served as a fortress and prison, underlining the clan’s importance in defense and governance during medieval times.
The Lawders’ involvement in trade is also notable. Robert de Lawdre and Thomas of Lwedre were recognized as merchants and burgesses of Edinburgh in the early 15th century, emphasizing the family’s economic influence and participation in the urban life of Scotland.
Clan Lauder was not isolated within its own borders; its members interacted with other clans and played crucial roles in diplomatic affairs. William Lawedre’s appointment as a conservator of truce between Scotland and England in 1451 exemplifies the Lauders’ involvement in maintaining peace and stability across borders.
The Lauders’ involvement in escorting envoys and conducting diplomatic missions, such as accompanying the envoys with Princess Cecilia’s dower to Edinburgh in 1477, demonstrates their trusted position within Scottish society.
Like many ancient Scottish clans, the Lauder name has evolved over time, resulting in numerous spelling variations, such as Lawder, Lawter, Leather, and more. These variations arose due to different interpretations and the evolution of language throughout the centuries.

Francis Sempill was the third of the Sempills, Lairds of Beltrees in Renfrewshire, to win fame as a humorist. His grandfather was Sir James Sempill, author of the 16th century satire "Packman's Paternoster"; his father Robert wrote the famous elegy on Habbie Simpson, "The Piper of Kilbarchan" which helped to give Scotland and Burns the famous Scots stanza, or, as it is sometimes known, The Habbie Simpson stanza. Francis Sempill has also had attributed to him, The Blythsome Bridal". His authorship to both has been disputed mainly because it is based on the unconfirmed claims of his grandchildren.
I was not certain of the pronunciation of the surname, "Lauder" and tried to make it sound like a cross between "Louder" and "Lorder".
As with most of the songs from this collection I have devised my own chord progression to suit my finger-picking style of playing, and it should work ok for strumming if you so desire.

Clan Maitland is a lowland Scottish Clan that originated in Lauderdale, Scotland. The Maitland’s are descended from the Mautalent’s of Normandy France. It is believed that the family came to Great Briton with William the Conqueror in 1066. The first Mautalent on record in Scotland is Richard Mautalent who settled at Thirlestane, in Lauderdale, during the mid 13th century. The surname Maitland is an Anglo Saxon translation of Mautalent, which is derived from a nickname meaning bad or bad tempered.
The clan motto is Consilio Et Animis which translates into “by wisdom and courage”, and the clans crest features A crowned lion , in his dexter paw a sword and in his sinister a fleur de lis.
The historic seat of the clan is Thirlestane Castle located near Lauder Scotland. The original structure at Thirlestane Castle was a fort built on Castle Hill sometime before the 13th century. Sir John Maitland purchased the fort in 1587. The Castle was extended by the Maitland Clan in the 17th century and again in the 19th century. Currently the castle is operated by a trust and is open to the public for tours.

The Royal Burgh of Lauder (Scottish Gaelic: Labhdar) is a town in the Scottish Borders in the historic county of Berwickshire. On the Southern Upland Way, the burgh lies 27 miles south east of Edinburgh, on the western edge of the Lammermuir Hills.
Medieval history
Although Lauder sits in the valley of Leader Water, Watson notes that the names Lauder and Leader appear to be unconnected. In the earliest sources Lauder appears as Lauuedder and Louueder.
Below Lauder are the lands of Kedslie which were bounded on the west by a road called "Malcolm's rode," and it is thought this formed part of the Roman road known as Dere Street, which passed through Lauder. Hardie suggests that it had been reconditioned by Malcolm III for use in his almost constant warfare against England. It is the only old road in Scotland that is associated with the name of an individual person.
The ancient settlement was further up the hills on the edge of the Moor. Its name is unknown, but it was tiny. The New Statistical Account of Scotland (vol.II) says that the present town of Lauder existed as a kirk-town in the time of David I (1124–53), and Sir J.D.Marwick says, in his preface to the Records of Convention, that the present town of Lauder existed in the latter half of the twelfth century. The town was once surrounded by walls with gates commonly referred to as 'ports'. Two major mills, which dated from the 12th century, also served the town.
