'Let the Niggers Burn!' (1971) is now available as an Ebook, with a new preface by David Austin

Something very significant happened in Montreal on February 11th, 1969, which for different reasons neither Blacks nor Whites will ever forget. The reaction of white Montreal was a display of vile racism from all sorts of people - academics, students, journalists, politicians and others. The events, collectively referred to as the 'Sir George Williams Affair', witnessed a small internal charge of racism by six black students against a university professor escalate into a highly charged rebellion that shook the West Indies, ruffled the world and moved black consciousness one step further.

This book, written by Blacks involved in the Computer Riots and edited by Dennis Forsythe, was first published in 1971 as the fourth publication of Black Rose Books, though it has long since fallen out of print. Now, over five hundred Black Rose Books titles and four and half decades later, this classic book is being republished as a PDF Ebook to complement the testimony of the extraordinary new NFB-produced documentary, 'The Ninth Floor'. The book returns with a new introduction by David Austin, a key author, researcher and teacher on the question of black liberation in Montreal and beyond.

A new book by Dimitri Roussopoulos - Political Ecology: Beyond Environmentalism

Political Ecology: Beyond Environmentalism explains the history of environmental politics and its prospects for the future. Courtesy of New Compass Press in Oslo, Norway, this classic work is now available in a new, greatly expanded edition and, in 2016, is set to be translated into seven languages: Spanish, Turkish, Greek, French, Italian, Portugese and Chinese.

Political Ecology opens by presenting the history of the state management of the environment, then moves to an overview of the great variety of popular responses to the ecological crisis, before finally discussing the main political tendencies offered by the ecology movement. Ecological activists, Roussopoulos argues, aim for more than protecting the environment; they call for new communities, new lifestyles, and a new way of doing politics.

The concluding sections explore how we can channel the aspirations of environmentalism into political alternatives, and they provide a set of striking examples of successes inspired by social ecology. Cities, Roussopoulos argues, are not only central to the global economic system and its crises, but are also key to developing social and ecological alternatives to this system.

The Rise of Cities: Montreal, Toronto, Vancouver and other Cities

2007 marks a new epoch when the majority of human beings on the planet live in cities. What this work explores is how cities coalesce, develop and thrive and how they remake themselves for better or worse. The parasitic relationship cities have with Nature, the webs of trade and immigration they rely upon to survive, how they feed and water themselves and dispose of waste are examined in a sweeping exploration of what the city is.

What is offered is an explanation of cities in crisis and demonstrates why the State has failed and must fail to end the urban crisis. What is analyzed is the spatial structure of the metropolis, metropolitan governance, urban redevelopment policies, housing problems, grass roots activism, the fiscal log jam of cities and urban planning.

Dimitri Roussopoulos, Bill Freeman, Patrick Smith and Rob Annadale and associates, are combined in this exceptional and pioneering book which deals with Montreal, Toronto and Vancouver. A comprehensive analysis and overview is presented of each city, including the elections of 2014. The work is placed in the evolution of urbanisation, a major 21st century phenomena, and its impact on human society.

Out now from New Compass Press: Social Ecology and Social Change

In September 2014, New Compass, together with the University of Oslo, organized a profoundly important conference called Ecological Challenges. Some of the questions we asked were: How can we create a society that is ecological as well as egalitarian? How can we develop new forms of activism that are constructive as well as confrontational? How can we work for genuine social change and simultaneously prevent ecological destruction and improve people’s lives in today’s world? The results of these discussions are now gathered in one book!

Coming soon: Green Politics, Green Economics

Green Politics, Green Economics analyses the dominant model of economic growth promoted everywhere, and shows how it can be seen to account for the general crisis humanity faces as Nature everywhere is in retreat. There are two intersecting economic reasons for the current situation: the changing world economy and the experience of reaching the limits of capitalist production and growth.
