Ten thousand years

In various East Asian languages, the phrase "ten thousand years" is used to wish long life, and is typically translated as "long live" in English. The phrase originated in ancient China as an expression used to wish long life to the emperor of China. Due to the political and cultural influence of China in the area, and in particular of the Chinese language, cognates with similar meanings and usage patterns have appeared in many East Asian languages.

In some countries, this phrase is mundanely used when expressing feeling of triumph, typically shouted by crowds. In such situation, "hurrah" may be the adequate translation.

China

The phrase wansui (萬歲; literally "ten thousand years") was once used casually to wish a person long life. During the Tang dynasty, it came to be used exclusively to address the emperor as a prayer for his long life and reign. Then, during the Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms period, its use was temporarily extended to include certain higher-ranking members of the imperial court, but this tradition was relatively short-lived: in later imperial history, using it to address someone other than the emperor was considered an act of sedition and was consequently highly dangerous. During certain reigns of weak emperors, powerful Eunuchs such as Liu Jin and Wei Zhongxian circumvented this restriction by styling themselves with jiǔ qiān suì (九千歲, literally "9000 years") so as to display their high positions, which were close to or even exceeded the emperor's, while still remaining reverent to the title of the emperor.

10000 (ten thousand) is the natural number following 9999 and preceding 10001.

Name

Many languages have a specific word for this number: in Ancient Greek it is μύριοι (related to the word myriad in English), in Aramaic ܪܒܘܬܐ, in Hebrew רבבה (revava), in Chinese 萬/万 (Mandarin wàn, Cantonese maan6, Hokkien bān), in Japanese 万/萬 [man], in Korean 만/萬 [man], and in Thai หมื่น [meun]. It is often used to mean an indefinite very large number.

The Greek root was used in early versions of the metric system in the form of the decimal prefix myria-.

The number 10000 can also be written 10,000 (UK and US), 10.000 (Europe mainland), 10 000 (transition metric), or 10•000 (with the dot raised to the middle of the zeroes; metric).

Matt Redman (born 14 February 1974) is an English Christian worship leader, singer-songwriter and author based in Brighton, East Sussex, United Kingdom.

He has worked with Newfrontiers, Passion Conferences, Hillsong London, Soul Survivor, is an artist for Sixstepsrecords and is a member of Compassionart, a charity founded by Martin Smith. He appeared with Hillsong London for a song on their 2005 album Jesus Is; he co-wrote and sang the song "Greatest Gift". In 2013, Redman won two Grammy Awards for "10,000 Reasons (Bless the Lord)" co-written with Jonas Myrin: Best Contemporary Christian Music Song and Best Gospel/Contemporary Christian Music Performance.

Numerous Contemporary Christian music (CCM) artists such as Matt Maher, Michael W. Smith, Jeremy Camp, Rebecca St. James, Chris Tomlin, David Crowder Band, Tree63, Kutless, Stellar Kart, and Hillsong United have performed Redman's songs. Some of his most popular early songs include "Heart of Worship", "You Never Let Go", "Let Everything That Has Breath", "Once Again", "Undignified", and "Better Is One Day". More recently he has co-written songs like "You Never Let Go", the 2005 Dove Award-winning "Blessed Be Your Name" (Worship Song of the Year) and the Grammy Award nominated "Our God". He regularly works alongside other Christian artists such as Chris Tomlin and Tim Hughes.
