Victoria (Alexandrina Victoria; 24 May 1819 – 22 January 1901) was Queen of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland from 20 June 1837 until her death. From 1 May 1876, she used the additional title of Empress of India.
Victoria was the daughter of Prince Edward, Duke of Kent and Strathearn, the fourth son of King George III. Both the Duke of Kent and King George III died in 1820, and Victoria was raised under close supervision by her German-born mother Princess Victoria of Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld. She inherited the throne at the age of 18, after her father's three elder brothers had all died, leaving no legitimate, surviving children. The United Kingdom was already an established constitutional monarchy, in which the sovereign held relatively little direct political power. Privately, Victoria attempted to influence government policy and ministerial appointments. Publicly, she became a national icon, and was identified with strict standards of personal morality.
Victoria married her first cousin, Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, in 1840. Their nine children married into royal and noble families across the continent, tying them together and earning her the sobriquet "the grandmother of Europe". After Albert's death in 1861, Victoria plunged into deep mourning and avoided public appearances. As a result of her seclusion, republicanism temporarily gained strength, but in the latter half of her reign, her popularity recovered. Her Golden and Diamond Jubilees were times of public celebration.
Her reign of 63 years and seven months, which is longer than that of any other British monarch and the longest of any female monarch in history, is known as the Victorian era. Examining the first half of Queen Victoria's life, biographer AN Wilson goes in search of a monarch too often misunderstood as the solid black-clad matron and reveals a woman who was passionately romantic and who spent her years as a child and young Queen fighting the control of domineering men. Queen Victoria was one of the nineteenth century's most prolific diarists, sometimes writing up to 2,500 words a day. From state affairs to family gossip, she poured out her emotions onto paper. Those close to her were afraid her more alarming opinions might escape in written form, causing havoc. In fact much of her writing was destroyed after her death and her personal journals edited by her daughter. But what survives frequently reveals a woman quite different to the one we think we know. AN Wilson reads her personal journals and unpublished letters and discovers the factors that shaped the Queen's personality. From the tortured relationship with her mother, to the dominant men she clung to in search of a father figure and the powerful struggle that made her marriage to Prince Albert a battleground, Queen Victoria was always a woman in search of intimate relationships. Engines of Change
As a teenager, Princess Victoria -- aware, as was the English public, that she was heir to the throne of her childless uncle, William IV -- was taken by her mother, the Duchess of Kent, on a royal progress -- by carriage -- through the rain-drenched Midlands into North Wales. For Victoria, it was a horrifying introduction to the Britain that kept the elegant society of the great houses at which they would stay comfortable and prosperous. "The men, women, children, country and houses are all black...," she wrote in her diary. "The grass is quite blasted and black." A blast furnace the entourage passed in their carriages was "an extraordinary building flaming with fire," after which everything continued to be "black, engines flaming, coals, in abundance; everywhere, smoking and burning coal heaps, intermingled with wretched huts and carts and little ragged children." Yet despite the grim conditions, at every stopping place, enthusiastic crowds shouted greetings, lengthy addresses by local officials promised future devotion, choirs sang patriotic anthems, and salutes were fired by happy celebrants, unaware that such anticipations of his death made old King William more than unhappy. At the great country houses, the princess dined from gold plates and drank from gilt cups, unaware that the industrial progress she had witnessed had left her future subjects behind in an abject misery concealed by their loyalty.

At the end of the C19 and the beginning of the C20, film was a new emerging technology and, for some reason or other, I'm totally fascinated by those historical figures who just managed to be captured by the new medium -- people of whom we would have no moving record had the innovation developed just a short time later.
For me, the sensation is of time travel - as though I have jumped into a tardis or time machine, keyed in a figure of interest and a date, and then journeyed back over the decades.
I want to do a series of videos of people of historical interest who were just captured on film and or audio -- people you may not realise were recoded in these new technologies.
I hope this venture interests some others of you as much as it does me!
The first in this series is a compilation of some of the film that exists of Queen Victoria (1819-1901). Prior to each clip, I've added stills from the footage to locate the queen (circled) -- often the quality of the images is such that it's easy to miss the subject!
The first four clips were shot during the celebrations for her Diamond Jubilee in 1897.
The fifth clip was shot during the Queen's visit to Dublin in 1900, and shows her carriage stopping for the British monarch to receive a large bouquet of flowers from a young girl.
The sixth clip shows Queen Victoria arriving by carriage at a garden party in 1898. She is accompanied by the Princess of Wales, later Queen Mary.
The seventh clip again shows the queen in a carriage during a Diamond Jubilee occasion.
In the eighth clip, the queen is seen in a carriage, visiting Sheffield in 1897. She looks least like herself in this footage -- an impostor perhaps?
The ninth clip was shot at Balmoral in 1896 and the queen is outdoors being led in a carriage by a kilt clad gentleman, with members of her family, English and Indian courtiers and attendants ... and her dog present. At 6.52 can be seen Tsar Nicholas and his wife the Tsarina Alexandra - favourite granddaughter of Queen Victoria.
The tenth clip shows the funeral procession and cortege of Queen Victoria in 1901, with the mourners including King Edward VII and Kaiser Wilhelm II.

The tenth clip shows the funeral procession and cortege of Queen Victoria in 1901, with the mourners including King Edward VII and Kaiser Wilhelm II. She proposes and they marry, Albert proving himself not only a devoted spouse, prepared to take an assassin's bullet for her, but an agent of much-needed reform, finally endorsed by an admiring Melbourne.

Plot: A fictionalized account of the life of William F. "Buffalo Bill" Cody. A hunter and Army Scout in the early part of his life, he rescues a US Senator and his beautiful daughter, Louisa Frederici. Cody is portrayed as someone who admires and respects the Indians and is a good friend of Yellow Hand who will eventually become Chief of the Cheyenne. Everyone else, including the military, politicians and businessmen on the other hand hate the Indians and are perfectly prepared to trample on their lands and destroy their buffalo hunting grounds. He's eventually forced to fight the Cheyenne however. He's also met a writer, Ned Buntline, who writes about Cody's exploits and he becomes a sensation when he travels East. His career is not assured however, particularly when he attacks those in positions of authority over their maltreatment of the Native American population. He eventually establishes his wild west show that becomes an international sensation.

At the end of the C19 and the beginning of the C20, film was a new emerging technology and, for some reason or other, I'm totally fascinated by those historical figures who just managed to be captured by the new medium -- people of whom we would have no moving record had the innovation developed just a short time later.
For me, the sensation is of time travel - as though I have jumped into a tardis or time machine, keyed in a figure of interest and a date, and then journeyed back over the decades.
I want to do a series of videos of people of historical interest who were just captured on film and or audio -- people you may not realise were recoded in these new technologies.
I hope this venture interests some others of you as much as it does me!
The first in this series is a compilation of some of the film that exists of Queen Victoria (1819-1901). Prior to each clip, I've added stills from the footage to locate the queen (circled) -- often the quality of the images is such that it's easy to miss the subject!
The first four clips were shot during the celebrations for her Diamond Jubilee in 1897.
The fifth clip was shot during the Queen's visit to Dublin in 1900, and shows her carriage stopping for the British monarch to receive a large bouquet of flowers from a young girl.
The sixth clip shows Queen Victoria arriving by carriage at a garden party in 1898. She is accompanied by the Princess of Wales, later Queen Mary.
The seventh clip again shows the queen in a carriage during a Diamond Jubilee occasion.
In the eighth clip, the queen is seen in a carriage, visiting Sheffield in 1897. She looks least like herself in this footage -- an impostor perhaps?
The ninth clip was shot at Balmoral in 1896 and the queen is outdoors being led in a carriage by a kilt clad gentleman, with members of her family, English and Indian courtiers and attendants ... and her dog present. At 6.52 can be seen Tsar Nicholas and his wife the Tsarina Alexandra - favourite granddaughter of Queen Victoria.
The tenth clip shows the funeral procession and cortege of Queen Victoria in 1901, with the mourners including King Edward VII and Kaiser Wilhelm II.
The music I've used to accompany this video is from Edward Elgar's 'Enigma Variations' (No. 9-12).

On the same day in May 1856 that Queen Victoria held a review in Hyde Park at which she distributed the first Victoria Crosses, earned in the Crimea, she learned of the likelihood that many more medals were in the offing. Indian troops -- Sepoys -- in the subcontinent had mutinied. The news from India, with the "cruel suspense" (as she put it) of weeks of delay in securing information, as telegraphic communication was incomplete, had come just as she was pressing her prime minister, Viscount Palmerston, and the Army secretary, Lord Panmure, to do something about the "defenseless state" of Britain itself in the aftermath of post-Crimea military retrenchments. Suddenly, penny-pinching to reduce taxes had to be abandoned. The commander-in-chief of forces in India, General George Anson, was reported dead. Victoria was the daughter of Prince Edward, Duke of Kent and Strathearn, the fourth son of King George III. Both the Duke of Kent and King George III died in 1820, and Victoria was raised under close supervision by her German-born mother Princess Victoria of Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld. She inherited the throne at the age of 18, after her father's three elder brothers had all died, leaving no legitimate, surviving children. The United Kingdom was already an established constitutional monarchy, in which the sovereign held relatively little direct political power. Privately, Victoria attempted to influence government policy and ministerial appointments. Publicly, she became a national icon, and was identified with strict standards of personal morality.
Victoria married her first cousin, Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, in 1840. Their nine children married into royal and noble families across the continent, tying them together and earning her the nickname "the grandmother of Europe". After Albert's death in 1861, Victoria plunged into deep mourning and avoided public appearances. As a result of her seclusion, republicanism temporarily gained strength, but in the latter half of her reign, her popularity recovered. Her Golden and Diamond Jubilees were times of public celebration.
Her reign of 63 years and seven months, which is longer than that of any other British monarch and the longest of any female monarch in history, is known as the Victorian era. It was a period of industrial, cultural, political, scientific, and military change within the United Kingdom, and was marked by a great expansion of the British Empire. She was the last British monarch of the House of Hanover. Her son and successor, Edward VII, belonged to the House of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, the line of his father.
The decades that followed the Industrial Revolution saw Britain become a global superpower, with an Empire spanning the world. This series looks at some of the major figures involved in the spread of British influence, including prime ministers Disraeli and Gladstone, whose visions of the Empire could hardly have been more divergent. Victoria herself played an important role, especially after the dissolution of the British East India Company in 1857 and the resulting establishment of direct rule in India by the Crown. In Africa, David Livingstone’s explorations of the continent’s interior attracted remarkable public interest, while Cecil Rhodes’s single-minded pursuit of wealth and power proved instrumental in establishing colonial rule in the south. The Suez Canal came under British protection in 1888, further consolidating Britain’s presence in the Middle East. Personal accounts, dramatisations and evocative images from former outposts of the Empire paint a vivid picture of a nation at the zenith of its power.
