Achhut Kanya - Part1
Achhut Kanya, 1936 Director: Franz Osten Music: Saraswati Devi Dialog and Song Lyrics: JS Kashyap Cast: Devika Rani, Ashok Kumar, Monorama, Anwar, Pramila, Kamta Prasad The translation was provided by Raja with help on the songs from Ava. The source VHS tape was from Muz. Thanks to you all. Without your help this project would not have been possible. No thanks at all to the Indian home video production companies who let a landmark film like this languish without a release. And even were it to be released on DVD it would be of horrible quality, because they just don't care about their film heritage. A circular story, told in flashback, in which eternal repetition is only interrupted by death in the form of a relentlessly linear railway engine. The film opens at a railway crossing where a man is about to kill his wife when the narrative spins into the past via a song. The central story is of the unhappy love affair between Kasturi, the Harijan (Untouchable) daughter of the railway level-crossing guard Dukhia, and Pratap, the Brahmin son of the grocer Mohan. At first, rumor and mob violence are deployed to lethal effect in order to maintain a 'traditional', oppressive morality. Later, when the main protagonists are about to conform and marry selected partners, rumor and maliciousness again intervene to trigger renewed violence until the on-rushing train of fate stops the strife.

ONE HUNDRED GATES AND A BAKERY
In 1873 orthodox Jews have founded a new quarter close to the Old City. First, some 100 families lived here. They named the territory as „Me’a She’arim” i.e. „One Hundred Gates”.
This name refers to the Bible: „Then Isaac sowed in that land, and received in the same year an hundredfold: and the Lord blessed him.” (Genesis 26:12)
In our days, Me’a She’arim is such a unique and special part of Jerusalem, where strict Jewish traditions and conventions rule. People dress the same as in the European ghettos in the 19th century. Men wear long, black caftan and round, fur-covered hat. Most of the orthodox Jews are mistrustful and don’t give interviews gladly. The Swiss film-maker Jürg Da Vaz succesfully got closer to some of them. In his excellent film he shows to us the wise old man, Itzhak Frey, who has Central European roots and a deeply religious soul. Itzhak Frey teaches history, religion and philosophy to Da Vaz while selling some pastries and counting the money in the cash register at the same time. This film exceedingly shows orthodox Jewish religion in the 21st century.
In the orthodox part Me’a She’arim of Jerusalem religious people don’t allow to get interviewed or filmed. The nearly 90 years old Itzhak Frey comes from Bratislava. He sits at the cash register of his own bakery. Although first he isn’t willing to, but after all he tells stories, talks about politics and philosophy. He speaks about the World, God and human soul. „Everything has sense, even if we don’t see.” – he says, meanwhile he sells some pastries and “feels“ the coins in the cash register, while the bakers make apple and poppyseed puff-pastries. Itzhak Frey is a real Central European, he speaks countless languages. He likes to tell stories, although during the filming sometimes he puts his hand before his face as soon as fellow orthodox Jews enter his bakery.

-SWEET- the first eastgerman freeski expirience by mushroom productions
