Herbert Sargent (July 15, 1923 – May 6, 2005) was an American television writer, a producer for such comedy shows as The Tonight Show and Saturday Night Live, and a screenwriter (Bye Bye Braverman). During his tenure at Saturday Night Live, he and Chevy Chase created Weekend Update, the longest-running sketch in the show's history, and one of the longest running sketches on television.
He was born in Philadelphia on July 15, 1923. He was the older brother of Academy Award-winning screenwriter Alvin Sargent. Raised in Upper Darby, Pennsylvania, he studied architecture at Penn State University before serving with the United States Army Air Forces Air Transport Command in the Pacific Theater during World War II. He moved to Los Angeles and graduated from UCLA.
Sargent then moved to New York City and began his career in radio. He later helped develop television specials for Petula Clark, Perry Como, Bing Crosby, Alan King, Milton Berle, Sammy Davis Jr., Lily Tomlin, Paul McCartney, Anne Bancroft, and Burt Bacharach. He married actress Norma Crane in 1961 but they had divorced by the time she died in 1973.
Stephen Valentine Patrick William "Steve" Allen (December 26, 1921 – October 30, 2000) was an American television personality, musician, composer, actor, comedian, and writer. Though he got his start in radio, Allen is best known for his television career. He first gained national attention as a guest host on Arthur Godfrey's Talent Scouts. He graduated to become the first host of The Tonight Show, where he was instrumental in innovating the concept of the television talk show. Thereafter, he hosted numerous game and variety shows, including The Steve Allen Show, I've Got a Secret, and The New Steve Allen Show, and was a regular panel member on CBS' What's My Line?
Allen was a creditable pianist and a prolific composer, having written more than 14,000 songs, one of which was recorded by Perry Como and Margaret Whiting, others by Steve Lawrence and Eydie Gorme, Les Brown, and Gloria Lynne. Allen won the 1964 Grammy Award for Best Original Jazz Composition, with his song written with Ray Brown, "The Gravy Waltz". Allen wrote more than 50 books, has two stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and a Hollywood theater named in his honor.
The NBC Red Network is a defunct American radio network. Launched in 1926, it, along with the NBC Blue Network, were the two original radio networks of the National Broadcasting Company, and the first two commercial radio networks in the United States. CBS Radio was established a year later.
In 1943, NBC was required to divest itself of its Blue Network, which would eventually become the American Broadcasting Company (ABC). The Red Network continued as the NBC Radio Network. The NBC Radio Network itself no longer exists under its original configuration, having been spun off and gradually dissolved into eventual corporate parent Westwood One.
In 1923, the Radio Corporation of America (RCA) acquired control of WJZ in Newark, New Jersey, from Westinghouse, and moved the station to New York City The same year, RCA obtained a license for station WRC in Washington, D.C., and attempted to transmit audio between WJZ and WRC via low-quality telegraph lines, in an attempt to make a network comparable to that operated by American Telephone & Telegraph.
There are two types of radio networks currently in use around the world: the one-to-many broadcast network commonly used for public information and mass media entertainment; and the two-way radio type used more commonly for public safety and public services such as police, fire, taxicabs, and delivery services. Cell Phones are able to send and receive simultaneously by using two different frequencies at the same time. Many of the same components and much of the same basic technology applies to all three.
The Two-way type of radio network shares many of the same technologies and components as the Broadcast type radio network but is generally set up with fixed broadcast points (transmitters) with co-located receivers and mobile receivers/transmitters or Transceivers. In this way both the fixed and mobile radio units can communicate with each other over broad geographic regions ranging in size from small single cities to entire states/provinces or countries. There are many ways in which multiple fixed transmit/receive sites can be interconnected to achieve the range of coverage required by the jurisdiction or authority implementing the system: conventional wireless links in numerous frequency bands, fibre-optic links, or micro-wave links. In all of these cases the signals are typically backhauled to a central switch of some type where the radio message is processed and resent (repeated) to all transmitter sites where it is required to be heard.

Curatorial and Conservation specialists at the National Galleries of Scotland take a closer look at John Singer Sargent's Lady Agnew of Lochnaw.
From 1987 to 1988 Steve Allen hosted a daily 3 hour show on the NBC Radio Network. His co-host was Mark Simone and Herb Sargent located at WNEW in New York. They were often joined by Bob Einstein who would stop by Steve's office or call via phone. I happened to catch the show one afternoon on a satellite downlink. I was hooked immediately. I recorded portions of the last few shows. Most of the time Steve would be in his Van Nuys California office fed via satellite to New York. I searched around the West Coast satellite feeds and found the Van Nuys office audio. For these YouTube "videos" I replaced the program breaks with the audio from the Van Nuys office for a little "behind the scenes peek". You will hear Steve ad-libbing through hours of radio with hysterical moments accompani...

Walter Dunphy, BUs executive chef, ushers in spring with a recipe for sautéed cod and a colorful wheat berry salad with fresh vegetables. With little advance preparation, this makes a surprisingly quick and healthful meal. Both the salad and the cod need only a few minutes over heat to bring out their flavors. An underutilized side dish in many home kitchens, grain salads are filling, light, and nutritious. Dunphys recipe uses wheat berries, the whole grain kernels that are, in their most common form, ground into everyday flour, and that take on a slightly chewy, nutty quality when cooked. For color and flavor, Dunphy adds corn (preferably fresh, but frozen is fine), red pepper, heirloom cherry tomatoes, and edamame, the shelled whole soybeans that are a staple snack in Japan and are no...
