David Rago discusses Robert Ellison's collection of decorative ceramics, specifically the work of potter George Ohr.
"I met Bob Ellison in 1973. I was 17 at the time. I didn't really know who he was. He answered an ad I ran in the Yankee Trader, which back in the day was one of the periodicals we used to contact buyers around the country. It was way before the internet. Bob was that rare confluence of taste, money, and passion. He was one of those few people, the vanguard, of collecting decorative ceramics. He understood that these things were going to go up in value as more and more was learned about them and more people were attracted to the market.
Bob was a collector, but he was also a mentor of mine in that he didn't bring a normal eye to his collecting; he brought an artist's eye. He was, in fact, an artist. He ran with the abstract expressionists. We've sold some of his work in our art auctions in the past. When he bought something, I would learn how he was looking at a piece, because ... I didn't know. What did I know? ... he was very patient and would teach me about how things were better than other things and then certain aspects to look for in terms of form and color, especially with George Ohr. Much of what we're selling of Bob's is George Ohr.
Bob donated a portion of his collection to the Metropolitan Museum of Art about 4 or 5 years ago, and it is by far the best collection of decorative ceramics from the Arts and Crafts period in any public institution in the country. It was something over 300 pieces, including about 16 pieces of George Ohr, which really raised the bar for Ohr's holdings in public institutions outside of the Ohr Museum itself, which only has George Ohr. Again, with that artist's eye that Bob brought to the occasion, there are only 16 pieces, but they're masterpieces. Along with other pottery from the period: Grueby, Marblehead, Newcomb College, if you're interested in decorative ceramics, seeing the Ellison collection which is on display in the American Wing at the Metropolitan Museum of Art is a trip you have to make. It's really almost a ceramic pilgrimage.
We have in this auction a selection of George Ohr of Bob's, about 30 pieces. There are some really wonderful glazed pieces which show both the manipulations that Ohr's famous for which also show his virtuosity in glazing. There's a small selection of bisque work, and then what's interesting too are these burnt babies, which ... George Ohr didn't throw anything out. When the great Biloxi fire happened in 1894, George Ohr saved everything. His pottery was burnt to the ground on that October evening, and he saved even the pots that were burned in the fire. He called them his 'burnt babies.' He put them in crates. I remember seeing black-and-white photographs of the burnt babies in crates before they were moved up north by Jim Carpenter in 1969 to 1970.
There really wasn't a market for them, because people didn't quite understand what they were, but Ohr loved them, just like he loved all the pottery he made. We've been selling now burnt babies in the last couple of auctions and we have a selection of about 10 of them in the upcoming sale."

BATS HELP FARMERS BY POLLINATING CROPS AND DEVOURING HUGE
NUMBERS OF INSECTS.
Tuttle: This is a Mexican free-tailed bat. And tonight this one bat is capable of catching
up to 40 or more corn earworm or armyworm moths over surrounding croplands. Each
one of those moths could be carrying as much as a thousand eggs.
Many organic farmers are now relying heavily on bats in integrated pest management.
They build houses for up to 2000 bats at a time in their orchards and several have actually
ceased using pesticides as a result of having successfully attracted bats.
N-R-C-S IS WORKING WITH LANDOWNERS TO MAINTAIN BAT HABITAT AND SOURCES OF FOOD AND WATER.
Merlin Tuttle, Bat Conservation International: Private landowners can help by maintaining clean, open sources of water where bats can drink, can maintain hedge rows and forest edges where bats can travel to and from feeding areas without being caught by owls, and can help protect roost sites, everything from old snags to mines and caves.

Bob Dylan
Bob Dylan (/ˈdɪlən/; born Robert Allen Zimmerman, May 24, 1941) is an American singer-songwriter, artist and writer. He has been influential in popular music and culture for more than five decades. Much of his most celebrated work dates from the 1960s when his songs chronicled social unrest, although Dylan repudiated suggestions from journalists that he was a spokesman for his generation. Nevertheless, early songs such as "Blowin' in the Wind" and "The Times They Are a-Changin'" became anthems for the American civil rights and anti-war movements. After he left his initial base in the American folk music revival, his six-minute single "Like a Rolling Stone" altered the range of popular music in 1965. His mid-1960s recordings, backed by rock musicians, reached the top end of the United States music charts while also attracting denunciation and criticism from others in the folk movement.
Dylan's lyrics have incorporated various political, social, philosophical, and literary influences. They defied existing pop music conventions and appealed to the burgeoning counterculture. Initially inspired by the performances of Little Richard, and the songwriting of Woody Guthrie, Robert Johnson, and Hank Williams, Dylan has amplified and personalized musical genres. His recording career, spanning 50 years, has explored the traditions in American song—from folk, blues, and country to gospel, rock and roll, and rockabilly to English, Scottish, and Irish folk music, embracing even jazz and the Great American Songbook. Dylan performs with guitar, keyboards, and harmonica. Backed by a changing line-up of musicians, he has toured steadily since the late 1980s on what has been dubbed the Never Ending Tour. His accomplishments as a recording artist and performer have been central to his career, but songwriting is considered his greatest contribution.

It was something over 300 pieces, including about 16 pieces of George Ohr, which really raised the bar for Ohr's holdings in public institutions outside of the Ohr Museum itself, which only has George Ohr. Again, with that artist's eye that Bob brought to the occasion, there are only 16 pieces, but they're masterpieces. Along with other pottery from the period: Grueby, Marblehead, Newcomb College, if you're interested in decorative ceramics, seeing the Ellison collection which is on display in the American Wing at the Metropolitan Museum of Art is a trip you have to make. It's really almost a ceramic pilgrimage.

"I met Bob Ellison in 1973. I was 17 at the time. I didn't really know who he was. He answered an ad I ran in the Yankee Trader, which back in the day was one of the periodicals we used to contact buyers around the country. It was way before the internet. Bob was that rare confluence of taste, money, and passion. He was one of those few people, the vanguard, of collecting decorative ceramics. He understood that these things were going to go up in value as more and more was learned about them and more people were attracted to the market.
Bob was a collector, but he was also a mentor of mine in that he didn't bring a normal eye to his collecting; he brought an artist's eye. He was, in fact, an artist. He ran with the abstract expressionists. We've sold some of his work in our art auctions in the past. When he bought something, I would learn how he was looking at a piece, because ... I didn't know. What did I know? ... he was very patient and would teach me about how things were better than other things and then certain aspects to look for in terms of form and color, especially with George Ohr. Much of what we're selling of Bob's is George Ohr.
Bob donated a portion of his collection to the Metropolitan Museum of Art about 4 or 5 years ago, and it is by far the best collection of decorative ceramics from the Arts and Crafts period in any public institution in the country. Merlin Tuttle, Bat Conservation International: This is Bracken Cave, home of the largest remaining bat population on our entire planet. Its just one of dozens of key sites that the Natural Resources Conservation Service has helped protect over the last decade.
BATS HELP FARMERS BY POLLINATING CROPS AND DEVOURING HUGE
NUMBERS OF INSECTS.
Tuttle: This is a Mexican free-tailed bat. And tonight this one bat is capable of catching
up to 40 or more corn earworm or armyworm moths over surrounding croplands. Each
one of those moths could be carrying as much as a thousand eggs.
Many organic farmers are now relying heavily on bats in integrated pest management.
They build houses for up to 2000 bats at a time in their orchards and several have actually
ceased using pesticides as a result of having successfully attracted bats.
N-R-C-S IS WORKING WITH LANDOWNERS TO MAINTAIN BAT HABITAT AND SOURCES OF FOOD AND WATER.
Merlin Tuttle, Bat Conservation International: Private landowners can help by maintaining clean, open sources of water where bats can drink, can maintain hedge rows and forest edges where bats can travel to and from feeding areas without being caught by owls, and can help protect roost sites, everything from old snags to mines and caves.

And again we have a world-renowned computer scientist on the program! On Friday (April 6), I've sat down and talked with Robert Sedgewick:
founder and former chairman of the department of Computer Science at Princeton
William O. Baker Professor of Computer Science at Princeton
member of the Board of Directors at Adobe Systems
Fellow of the Association for Computing Machinery for the seminal work in the mathematical analysis of algorithms and pioneering research in algorithm animation
author of numerous research papers and several books, including a series of textbooks on algorithms widely used all around the world (published by Addison-Wesley)
Personally, Sedgewick's book helped me understand algorithms much better than CLRS and Knuth. Thanks to motivated examples, actual implementations of the algorithms presented, detailed illustrations, cool experiments and intuitive mathematical analysis I felt I was growing after every page. I think, a human being is inductive - it's easier to comprehend new material if first presented with examples and the practical side, with the theory and generalizations developed afterwards. Unfortunately, many books and courses teach things the other way around.
One of my favorite parts of the interview was when to my question, 'What are your reading habits? What have been you reading recently?', Robert Sedgewick just replied saying, 'Not much. I'm usually just writing!' That's the creative mindset of a true producer!
The questions I asked to Prof. Sedgewick:
When did you decide to pursue CS as a career?
You completed your PhD under the supervision of legendary Donald Knuth. What was it like to have him as an advisor?
Do you agree with Donald Knuth's advice to young people, 'If the topic is popular, the results will be unimportant'?
On Nobel-prize effect when scientists after being recognized can't afford to work on small problems and end up not producing anything great afterwards?
What are your thoughts on the Nobel-prize effect when applied to innovation - big successful companies overlook small low margin markets which are attacked by disruptive startups?
While working on your PhD, how did you allocate your time on reading, writing and research?
What was the collaboration environment like at Stanford back then?
How was the intro to programming taught at Princeton before 1992 - the year when you started COS 126?
'COS 126: General Computer Science' is the highest-enrolled course at Princeton (50% of all students at Princeton take it), 25% of all students take 'COS 226: Data structures and Algorithms'. What are the reasons behind the popularity of the courses you developed?
On the future of publishing: if the scientific paper won't be read on paper why write it as if it will?
Could you elaborate on some ideas for the future of publishing you hinted during your 'Algorithms for the masses' talk at ANALCO'2011 (San Francisco)?
Can you describe your hybrid model of publishing: traditional textbook + forward looking booksite ('Intro to Programming in Java' booksite; 'Algorithms' booksite) with all the code, videos, pictures and simulations?
Your 'Algorithms' textbook aims to cover 50+ algorithms every programmer should know. It's widely considered one of the best books on algorithms (example of this is a question on Quora: 'what are some great general algorithms books other than Knuth, CLRS and Sedgewick?'). What are the reasons behind its success?
Galactic algorithms are ones that will never be used in practice. Why? Any effect would never be noticed in this galaxy. You once said, 'O-notation is useful for many reasons, but common error is to think that it is useful to predict performance'. Can you talk more about this?
