The suspension railway runs along a route of 13.3 kilometres (8.3 mi), at a height of about 12 metres (39 ft) above the river Wupper between Oberbarmen and Sonnborner Straße (10 kilometres or 6.2 miles) and about 8 metres (26 ft) above the valley road between Sonnborner Straße and Vohwinkel (3.3 kilometres or 2.1 miles). At one point the railway crosses the A46 motorway. The entire trip takes about 30 minutes. The Wuppertal Suspension Railway operates within the VRR transport association and accepts tickets issued by the VRR companies.

This is the strangest means of transport I've ever taken !
Actually, I hadn't plan to visit it during my stay in Dresden till I found a leaflet in the city transport office.
My curiosity was definitely aroused by a strange picture representing the carriages of the Dresden suspension railway running beneath a kind of gigantic skeleton made of steel...
What exactly was that « machine » half cable car, half funicular ?
I really had to find out all about it !
I rushed out the city transport office and jumped onto the first tramway to the Loschwitz district.
After crossing the magnificent "Blaues Wunder (blue wonder)" iron bridge on foot and a short walk later, I was standing in front of the lower station.
And trust me : I didn't regret what I discovered !

China's first suspension railway line finished its test run in Chengdu, capital of southwest China's Sichuan Province, on Friday.
The lithium-battery powered train, which has a speed of 60 km per hour, successfully ran along the 300-meter test section of the railway line, after being suspended from the line on Friday.
The load capacity will be 120 passengers per train coach, said Zhai Wanming, chief designer of the project, from Southwest Jiaotong University.
Based on the current test line, Zhai estimates the cost of the suspension railway is one-fifth to one-eighth of the cost of underground rail per kilometer. He also said that lithium batteries were environmentally friendly.
The test section of the railway line will be expanded to 1.2 kilometers, for further tests on turning, climbing, and operations at train and charging stations, Zhai said.
"The test runs will continue for tens of thousands of kilometers to check performance capabilities before official operation," he said.

A suspension railway is a form of elevated monorail where the vehicle is suspended from a fixed track (as opposed to a cable used in aerial tramways), which is built above street level, over a river or canal, or an existing railway track.
History
Palmer System and Cheshunt Railway
The British engineer Henry Robinson Palmer (1795–1844) filed a patent application for a horse-drawn suspended single-rail system in 1821, and constructed a demonstration at Woolwich Arsenal soon afterwards.
German industrial pioneer, thinker and politician Friedrich Harkort built a demonstration track of Palmers' system in 1826, in Elberfeld, Germany, at the time commercial centre of the early industrial area Wupper Valley. The steelmill owner had the vision of a coal-carrier railway between Wupper Valley and the nearby coal-mining region of Ruhr, which would connect his own factories in Elberfeld and Deilbachtal. Due to protests from mill owners that were not integrated along the line and from the transporting branch, this idea could not be executed.

Wuppertal Suspension Railway
The Wuppertal Suspension Railway (German: Wuppertaler Schwebebahn) is a suspension railway in Wuppertal, Germany.
Its full name is "Electric Elevated Railway (Suspension Railway) Installation, Eugen Langen System" (Anlage einer elektrischen Hochbahn (Schwebebahn), System Eugen Langen). It is the oldest electric elevated railway with hanging cars in the world and is a unique system.
Designed by Eugen Langen to sell to the city of Berlin, the installation with elevated stations was built in Barmen, Elberfeld and Vohwinkel between 1897 and 1903; the first track opened in 1901. The Schwebebahn is still in use today as a normal means of local public transport, moving 25 million passengers annually (2008).

China's first suspension railway line finished its test run in Chengdu, capital of southwest China's Sichuan Province, on Friday.
The lithium-battery powered train, which has a speed of 60 km per hour, successfully ran along the 300-meter test section of the railway line, after being suspended from the line on Friday.
The load capacity will be 120 passengers per train coach, said Zhai Wanming, chief designer of the project, from Southwest Jiaotong University.
Based on the current test line, Zhai estimates the cost of the suspension railway is one-fifth to one-eighth of the cost of underground rail per kilometer. He also said that lithium batteries were environmentally friendly.
The test section of the railway line will be expanded to 1.2 kilometers, for further tests on turning, climbing, and operations at train and charging stations, Zhai said.
"The test runs will continue for tens of thousands of kilometers to check performance capabilities before official operation," he said.
A suspension railway is an elevated monorail where the train is suspended from a fixed track.
One of the earliest electrical elevated railway systems, built in the German city of Wuppertal, opened in 1901 and is still in operation today.

This is the strangest means of transport I've ever taken ! Actually, I hadn't plan to visit it during my stay in Dresden till I found a leaflet in the city transport office. My curiosity was definitely aroused by a strange picture representing the carriages of the Dresden suspension railway running beneath a kind of gigantic skeleton made of steel... What exactly was that « machine » half cable car, half funicular ? I really had to find out all about it ! I rushed out the city transport office and jumped onto the first tramway to the Loschwitz district. After crossing the magnificent "Blaues Wunder (blue wonder)" iron bridge on foot and a short walk later, I was standing in front of the lower station. And trust me : I didn't regret what I discovered !

Open Rails - Wuppertaler Schwebebahn Oberbarmen - Vohwinkel MSTS Wuppex
Hier nun mal ein spezielles Open Rails Video. Aufgenommen im sehr empfehlenswerten Freeware-Addon Wupper Express in der Version 12. Bestandteil der Strecke ist auch die Wuppertaler Schwebebahn, und das sogar komplett. Allerdings: Das Ganze ist eher experimenteller Natur. Denn standardmäßig ist diese nicht mit Aufgaben und fahrbaren Zügen versehen. So wurde hier der KI-Zug der Bareihe GTW72 fahrtüchtig gemacht mit einem Freeware-Führerstand eines B-Wagens und auch der Sound ist eher der Fantasie entsprungen. Ebenso sieht man, daß wegen der Bauweise der Schwebebahn natürlich getrickst werden mußte: Die Gleise sind größtenteils unsichtbar unterirdisch, die Bahn ist auch erhöht. Da die Außenansicht ansonsten unbrauchbar gewesen wäre, wurde die Passagieransicht - die der Wagen sowieso nicht hat...

-MOVIE PLOT-
ENGLISH: One summer on the Island of Sodor, Spencer arrives to help the Duke and Duchess with the construction of their new summer house. After being an absolute nuisance to all of the other engines by teasing and bossing them around, Thomas accepts Spencer's challenge to a contest of strength, taking heavy cargo around the island.
When Thomas explains Hiro's situation to the Fat Controller, he reassures Thomas that he would never have scrapped the "Master of the Railway", and the following day, Thomas and Percy bring him to the Steamworks. There, Victor and his assistant, Kevin, work together to restore Hiro. Once he's as good as new, Hiro with Rocky rescues Spencer, and they work with Thomas on the summerhouse. Spencer apologizes to the two engines, saying they are "both fine engines and fine friends." Hiro misses his home island, so the Fat Controller arranges for Hiro to return home. A farewell party is held at the docks, and Thomas promises Hiro that Sodor will always be his home too.
(ESPAÑOL/SPANISH): Thomas se encuentra a Hiro, la locomotora más antigua de Sodor, perdido en el camino. Hiro estaba muy triste porque ya se sentía una locomotora vieja e inservible, pero Thomas le pide ayuda a sus amigos y hacen de Hiro el amo de las vías nuevamente, pero no todo fue tan fácil, viven múltiples contratiempos y aventuras cuando Spencer, una locomotora muy presumida, trata de impedir sus planes de rescate.

Hier nun mal ein spezielles Open Rails Video. Aufgenommen im sehr empfehlenswerten Freeware-Addon Wupper Express in der Version 12.
Bestandteil der Strecke ist auch die Wuppertaler Schwebebahn, und das sogar komplett. Allerdings:
Das Ganze ist eher experimenteller Natur. Denn standardmäßig ist diese nicht mit Aufgaben und fahrbaren Zügen versehen. So wurde hier der KI-Zug der Bareihe GTW72 fahrtüchtig gemacht mit einem Freeware-Führerstand eines B-Wagens und auch der Sound ist eher der Fantasie entsprungen. Ebenso sieht man, daß wegen der Bauweise der Schwebebahn natürlich getrickst werden mußte: Die Gleise sind größtenteils unsichtbar unterirdisch, die Bahn ist auch erhöht. Da die Außenansicht ansonsten unbrauchbar gewesen wäre, wurde die Passagieransicht - die der Wagen sowieso nicht hat - umfunktioniert.
Wasser führt die Wupper hier nicht. Nun ja. Nicht weiter tragisch.
Ich finde es trotzdem mal ganz interessant zu sehen, daß diese eher experimentielle Strecke doch relativ brauchbar ist. Und es lassen sich auch alle Stationen anfahren. Da ansonsten der typische Eisenbahn-Abpfiff ertönt wäre, habe ich für diese Aufgabe einfach mal das Türenknallen eines ET420 als solchen genommen. Entspricht zwar nicht ganz dem originalen Türenknallen, aber der Triebwagen-Sound ist es ja auch nicht.

This is a rather special and experimental video in Open Rails. The Wuppertal Suspension Railway(Monorail) was implemented in the highly recommended freeware route Wupper Express 12.
However it is not playable without some work.
The train is only a KI train and had to be made steerable with a freeware cab(from the B-train light rail vehicle). Also the outside view is a changed passenger view as the normal outside view with 2 and 3 reveals that the "real" train is hidden in the underground with the mostly non-visible tracks as MSTS is not really designed for work with special systems like that.
Still interesting to see that it works well as for just being an experiment. You can compare it with a dedicated simulation for this system here:
