Why free public transport doesn't fix traffic (and what does)
If cars are bad for the climate, and public transport good, what makes people switch? From Jakarta to Tallinn, cities are trying to motivate people by eliminating fares. Let’s check if that works.

We're destroying our environment at an alarming rate. But it doesn't need to be this way. Planet A explores the shift towards an eco-friendly world — and challenges our ideas about what dealing with climate change means. We look at the big and the small: What we can do and how the system needs to change. Every Friday we'll take a truly global look at how to get us out of this mess.

Why American public transit is so bad | 2020 Election
Most Americans have no choice but to drive. How do we change that?
We produced this video in 2020 as part of our US election coverage. The rest of those videos are at https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLJ8cMiYb3G5eKjlXtsOo6SDi2ZvcHQ69q
In the middle of the 20th century, the US government made a decision that would transform American cities: It built a huge system of interstate highways, many of which went right through the downtowns of its biggest cities.
This sealed the country's fate as a car culture, and today we're seeing the results. In most cities, it's extremely difficult to get around without a car, in part due to public transit systems built to serve an outdated commute. And when our politics turn to infrastructure, the government often favors building new roads and highway...

From March 1st 2020, Luxembourg will have free public transit throughout the country: you'll be able to travel on buses, trains, trams, and that one funicular railway without a ticket. It sounds like a good idea: but is it?

Why The U.S. Gave Up On Public Transit
Public transit in the U.S. is notorious for being infrequent and unreliable. Americans had to wait 17 minutes on average to get on public transit in 2022, while 45% of Americans have no access to public transportation at all. And while the U.S. spends billions in funding every year, transits across the nation like the MTA, RTA and SEPTA are finding themselves in a fiscal crisis. Ultimately it’s the riders who are paying for the deficit. So just how did public transit in the U.S. get so awful? And can it be improved?

And when our politics turn to infrastructure, the government often favors building new roads and highways instead of improving and expanding public transportation.
The result is a system that forces more Americans to drive, at the expense of those who rely on public transit. It's also the biggest contributor to our country’s carbon footprint. Fixing that over the long term will require a reimagining of American cities and towns. But there's also a way that, if we wanted to, we could improve American transit systems, and get more people riding them, in a matter of weeks.

Industry players say Chinese visitors are now travelling in smaller groups, preferring free and easy options, rather than in large organised tours. Singapore saw about 2.9 million tourists from China in the first 11 months of last year. The figure was about 3.35 million over the same period in 2019, before the COVID-19 pandemic struck. Singapore has objected to what it calls a "false portrayal" of the country in a recent opinion video by the New York Times that advances the US media outlet's own agenda. The video features Mr Li Shengwu, the nephew of Singapore Senior Minister Lee Hsien Loong. Singapore ambassador to the US Lui Tuck Yew says the younger Mr Li had made misleading analogies about the island state in the video. Jeraldine Yap reports.

From Milo To McDonald's: Do You Remember These Singapore TV Ads? | On The Red Dot | 1-Hour Special
From products and services to stories and characters, advertisements have reflected Singapore’s history and identity in many ways. Early advertisements in Singapore mirrored the nation’s emergence from its colonial past and an aspirational view of the West. The iconic Singapore Girl ads put a piece of Singaporean identity to the global stage.
The growing population of the 1970s to 1990s was captured through iconic ads for Ribena, Milo, and Scott’s Emulsion—brands that resonated with families and children during that era. As Singapore developed, ads began to embrace local flavours with McDonald’s “One Day in Singapore” and IKEA’s “Gangsters,” reflecting scenarios rooted in Singaporean culture. The prominence of telecommunications is evident from memorable ads like M1’s “Indian Restaurant” ...

The prominence of telecommunications is evident from memorable ads like M1’s “Indian Restaurant” and Singtel’s “Pager Girl.”
During COVID-19, ads featuring icons like Phua Chu Kang and dialect reminded us to stay connected to our roots in tough times.
00:00 Introduction
01:20 What early ads in Singapore were like
03:01 Cigarette ads on TV in the 1960s
06:12 Tiger Beer’s first TV commercial
07:26 Singapore Airlines and the Singapore Girl ads
11:15 Which other Girl was featured in the 1970s?
12:39 Meet Nora, a 1970s POSB Girl
14:27 POSB’s contribution to nation building
15:29 The 1970s Ribena ad
17:48 Entertainers share their Milo memory
18:47 Remember the Scott’s Emulsion ad?
19:44 Ad regulations in the 1980s
20:31 Jeremy Monteiro explains jingles
21:34 Can you guess these popular jingles?
23:04 Pizza Hut: the forefathers of delivery today
23:40 Dick Lee recounts his Mcdonald's jingle
24:48 McDonald’s “A Day in Singapore” ad
27:30 IKEA’s take on localising a gangster movie
31:04 People behind M1 Indian Restaurant ad re-unite
34:06 Singtel’s 120th Anniversary campaign and Pager Girl
36:20 How Starhub’s Sparky ad came to be
40:15 Why PCK was used when COVID19 hit
42:27 Gov.sg’s Vaccinate Already? ad in dialect
44:45 The real impact of advertisements

HELLO FRIENDS!! And welcome to (hopefully) a new video series…!! Now some of you may know that we’re big fans of travel content on this channel... but we’re *not* big fans of jet lag. So when we were in Singapore this summer, we figured, why not try to embrace an inverted sleep schedule, and instead of sitting in our hotel room at the Marina Bay Sands, set out into the city and check out the best late-night eats, shopping, spas, (and... prawns?) that Singapore has to offer, at all hours of the night? Stay up with us as we explore a 6-story late night department store for several hours, try beautifying hot pot, and fish for prawns in an empty mall at 4am... A travel vlog for all the demented night owls out there 🫡
Let us know if you guys like this series and we can try to do more on future trips - we are definitely doing Tokyo this spring, but if there’s another city you’d be excited to see, let us know!
