Lake Mead, when full, is the largest reservoir in the United States in terms of maximum water capacity. It is on the Colorado River about 24 mi (39 km) from the Las Vegas Strip southeast of the city of Las Vegas, Nevada, in the states of Nevada and Arizona. Formed by the Hoover Dam, Lake Mead is 112 miles (180 km) long when the lake is full, has 759 miles (1,221 km) of shoreline, is 532 feet (162 m) at greatest depth, with a surface elevation of 1,221.4 feet (372.3 m) above sea level, and has 247 square miles (640 km2) of surface, and when filled to available capacity, 26.12 million acre feet (32.22 km3) of water. However, the lake has not reached full capacity since 1983 due to a combination of drought and increased water demand. Owing to current low water level, Lake Sakakawea holds claim over Lake Mead in terms of America's largest reservoir by total area and water in reserve.
The reservoir serves water to the states of Arizona, Nevada and California, providing sustenance to nearly 20 million people and large areas of farmland.
A lake is an area of variable size filled with water, localized in a basin, that is surrounded by land, apart from any river or other outlet that serves to feed or drain the lake. Lakes lie on land and are not part of the ocean (except for sea lochs in Scotland and Ireland), and therefore are distinct from lagoons, and are also larger and deeper than ponds, though there are no official or scientific definitions. Lakes can be contrasted with rivers or streams, which are usually flowing. However most lakes are fed and drained by rivers and streams.
Natural lakes are generally found in mountainous areas, rift zones, and areas with ongoing glaciation. Other lakes are found in endorheic basins or along the courses of mature rivers. In some parts of the world there are many lakes because of chaotic drainage patterns left over from the last Ice Age. All lakes are temporary over geologic time scales, as they will slowly fill in with sediments or spill out of the basin containing them.
Many lakes are artificial and are constructed for industrial or agricultural use, for hydro-electric power generation or domestic water supply, or for aesthetic or recreational purposes.
Mead (/ˈmiːd/; archaic and dialectal "medd"; from Old English "meodu",) is an alcoholic beverage created by fermenting honey with water, sometimes with various fruit, spices, grains, or hops. (Hops act as a preservative and produce a bitter, beer-like flavor.) The alcoholic content of mead may range from about 8% ABV to more than 20%. The defining characteristic of mead is that the majority of the beverage's fermentable sugar is derived from honey. It may be still, carbonated, or naturally sparkling; and it may be dry, semi-sweet, or sweet.
Mead is known from many sources of ancient history throughout Europe, Africa and Asia. "It can be regarded as the ancestor of all fermented drinks," Maguelonne Toussaint-Samat has speculated, "antedating the cultivation of the soil." Hornsey considers archaeological evidence of it ambiguous; however, McGovern and other archaeological chemists consider the presence of beeswax markers and gluconic acid, in the presence of other substances known to ferment, to be reasonably conclusive evidence of the use of honey in ancient fermented beverages.
Hoover Dam, once known as Boulder Dam, is a concrete arch-gravity dam in the Black Canyon of the Colorado River, on the border between the U.S. states of Nevada and Arizona. It was constructed between 1931 and 1936 during the Great Depression and was dedicated on September 30, 1935, by President Franklin D. Roosevelt. Its construction was the result of a massive effort involving thousands of workers, and cost over one hundred lives. The dam was controversially named after President Herbert Hoover.
Since about 1900, the Black Canyon and nearby Boulder Canyon had been investigated for their potential to support a dam that would control floods, provide irrigation water and produce hydroelectric power. In 1928, Congress authorized the project. The winning bid to build the dam was submitted by a consortium called Six Companies, Inc., which began construction on the dam in early 1931. Such a large concrete structure had never been built before, and some of the techniques were unproven. The torrid summer weather and lack of facilities near the site also presented difficulties. Nevertheless, Six Companies turned over the dam to the federal government on March 1, 1936, more than two years ahead of schedule.

Lake Mead is one of the largest reservoirs in the United States it holds up to 4 trillion gallons of water, and supplies water to over 25 million people in the States of California, Nevada and Arizona. The Hoover Dam was completed in 1936 blocking up the Colorado River in the Boulder Canyon. The water level is currently in drought mode but heavy snowfall this year should help fill it up. it is currently 148 feet below capacity at 1085 feet, with a full pool being 1229' which hasn't occurred since 1983. It's Crazy to see how much the water level fluctuates in this huge lake. if the lake level drops below 1075' it is considered drought conditions and they start rationing water in Nevada and Arizona, but not California because they have first priority on the water. If the lake level drops bel...
Took a ride down Lakeshore drive from Henderson to Echo Bay Marina for an update. We originally visited this marina back on December 25, 2015 and at that time the abandoned marina was sitting on dry lake bed. Now as you will see the lake has risen a few feet and that is promising for Lake Mead. #LiLV - Living in Las Vegas Youtube Channel - Thanks for watching!!

Lake Mead drops to an all time low as the severe drought takes it"s toll in Nevada and California! This week the lake dropped below 1080 feet and the national weather service predicts it will drop much further this summer. They predict the lake to go to quarter capacity. Pictured are some of the dried up docks and abandoned docks surrounding Lake Mead in Nevada. Jetty"s remain unused and falling apart and buoy"s are stuck in the mud as once thriving holiday destination are left in ruins and remain closed surrounding the once busy lake! In one case the boat launch had been moved 200 yards closer to the lake and still it became abandoned as boat goers are unable to access the water through the desert mud.Pictured: Lake Mead
We went out to Lake Mead to explore some of the areas near Boulder Beach...we explored an abandoned lakeside motel and then took a hike on the historic Hoover Dam Railroad tunnel that supplied materials to the Dam back in 1931. https://soundcloud.com/lilvvlogmusic/the-brightest-smile-feat-floppy-circus We finished the tour on our kayaks, paddling from Boulder beach to the rock wash plant that was left behind from the original Hoover dam concrete mixing plant. Modern time wonder Hoover Dam & Lake Mead in the USA. Located in the South Western region of the United States, Lake Mead is surrounded by the Mojave, Great Basin and Sonora deserts. It contains 35 billion cubic metres of water and was created as a result of a massive construction that was built on the Colorado River: the Hoover Dam.At a length of 177 kilometres, the idyllic Lake Mead is an essential water supply for the hot desert regions of both Nevada and Arizona. The Hoover Dam, which rises majestically above the Black Canyon, extends for more than 380 metres and generates the electricity that supplies the glittering world of Las Vegas’s Casinos in addition to various parts of Southern California. Lake Mead National Recreation Area, NV
Highly advised this!
Treat me casual, watch me as you'll see
I'm not too sure
I understand the tactful planning
That I must endure
But you call me immature because
I'm too sensitive to your insensitivity
I had the audacity to ask you to talk to me
The stones I throw shatter your sea of tranquility
You're about as human as the statue of liberty
But maybe you'll like me too (x2)
Kiss me, oblige me as if that's all
I want from you
Then ignore me at the party
I invite you to
What did you think I'd dare you do
Maybe I'd lose my sacred knack for subtlety
Perhaps you'd reveal that you actually like me
Did you ever think that I'd just bow out quietly
All I wish is sometimes you would sit down next to me
And if you would like me too (x2)
Well maybe I can't force you to
Stand up and obey my will
I doubt you'll ever touch me or
Love me which is bettter still
I deified you once but
Now I'm standing on your hill
I see you eye to eye
And you're shrinking out of my sight
So before you have passed my line
Let's lower ourselves to each other
Thinly tie me to myself though you
Remain so free
I've tried in vain to demonstrate how you're
Tied as well to me
But you'll come around eventually
Practice makes perfect and you practice perfection
But it's just a stage and I hope that some day when you're done
That maybe you'll like me too
I hope that you'll like me too
And if you would like me too
