The Atlantic Ocean is the second largest of the world's oceanic divisions, following the Pacific Ocean. With a total area of about 106,400,000 square kilometres (41,100,000 sq mi), it covers approximately 20 percent of the Earth's surface and about 29 percent of its water surface area. The first part of its name refers to Atlas of Greek mythology, making the Atlantic the "Sea of Atlas".
The oldest known mention of "Atlantic" is in The Histories of Herodotus around 450 BC (Hdt. 1.202.4): Atlantis thalassa (Greek: Ἀτλαντὶς θάλασσα; English: Sea of Atlas). The term Ethiopic Ocean, derived from Ethiopia, was applied to the southern Atlantic as late as the mid-19th century. Before Europeans discovered other oceans, their term "ocean" was synonymous with the waters beyond the Strait of Gibraltar that are now known as the Atlantic. The early Greeks believed this ocean to be a gigantic river encircling the world.
The Atlantic Ocean occupies an elongated, S-shaped basin extending longitudinally between Eurasia and Africa to the east, and the Americas to the west. As one component of the interconnected global ocean, it is connected in the north to the Arctic Ocean, to the Pacific Ocean in the southwest, the Indian Ocean in the southeast, and the Southern Ocean in the south (other definitions describe the Atlantic as extending southward to Antarctica). The equator subdivides it into the North Atlantic Ocean and South Atlantic Ocean.

We kick off our Travel Basecamp Algarve season with a day of stand up paddle boarding at Praia da Marinha, the most beautiful beach in Europe and arguably the most beautiful beach in the world (seriously). Gliding over emerald waters, our guide Nick Robinson from http://www.algarvesup.com/ brings us to Benagil Cave, a massive tunnel found in Algarve’s coastal cliffs. The legendary cave was formed by centuries of erosion caused by the constant waves of the Atlantic ocean and is now so huge it literally takes your breath away once you’re inside. Getting yourself on a stand up paddle tour along this coast is one of dozens of things to do in the Algarve region. It was on our bucket list and should be on yours, too. No time to watch now? Located on top of 200-foot limestone cliffs overlooking the Caribbean Sea, the Cabo Rojo Lighthouse (Faro Los Morrillos de Cabo Rojo) is located on the southwestern tip of Puerto Rico. The lighthouse was built in 1882 by the Spanish government in order to guide passing ships through the southeast entrance from the Caribbean Sea through the treacherous Mona Passage into the Atlantic Ocean. My family and I had a few afternoon hours to kill on our recent trip to Puerto Rico so we drove down there from Rincón to take in the absolutely breathtaking views. I brought along my Panasonic GH2 and Olympus M Zuiko 12-40mm f/2.8 lens - enjoy the video. Here's a short video documenting my 10-day trip to Morocco with some of my buddies. After two stopovers, three movies, six bottles of single-serving white wine and twenty two hours of flying, I finally touched down in Casablanca. The excruciating travel time was even prolonged by the train ride to our first stop, Marrakech, a place that's bursting with culture. The Marrakech tourist blackhole that is Jemaa El Fna is swarmed by souk merchants, snake charmers, drummers, monkey trainers and other street performers. Our next stop is Imlil, a place in the Atlas Mountains with stunning views. Our time in Imlil was mostly spent on appreciating the views from our balcony and exchanging stories with other travellers. We were in for a long-ass roadtrip en route to Zagora the next day but fortunatel...
