Leslie Thompson "Les" Baxter (March 14, 1922 – January 15, 1996) was an American musician and composer. After becoming well known as an arranger and composer for swing bands in the 1940s, he developed his own style of world music-influenced easy listening music, known as exotica, during the 1950s and 1960s.
Baxter studied piano at the Detroit Conservatory before moving to Los Angeles for further studies at Pepperdine College. From 1943 on he was playing tenor and baritone saxophone for the Freddie Slack big band. Abandoning a concert career as a pianist, he turned to popular music as a singer. At the age of 23 he joined Mel Tormé's Mel-Tones, singing on Artie Shaw records such as "What Is This Thing Called Love?".
Baxter then turned to arranging and conducting for Capitol Records in 1950, and conducted the orchestra of two early Nat King Cole hits, "Mona Lisa" and "Too Young". In 1953 he scored his first movie, the sailing travelogue Tanga Tika. With his own orchestra, he released a number of hits including "Ruby" (1953), "Unchained Melody" (1955), "The Poor People of Paris" (1956) and is remembered for a version of "Sinner Man" (1956), definitively setting the sound with varying tempos, orchestral flourishes, and wailing background vocals. "Unchained Melody" was the first million seller for Baxter, and was awarded a gold disc. "The Poor People of Paris" also sold over one million copies. He also achieved success with concept albums of his own orchestral suites: Le Sacre Du Sauvage, Festival Of The Gnomes, Ports Of Pleasure, and Brazil Now, the first three for Capitol and the fourth on Gene Norman's Crescendo label. The list of musicians on these recordings includes Plas Johnson and Clare Fischer. Baxter also wrote the "Whistle" theme from the TV show Lassie.
Hell's Belles is a fictional supervillain team in the Marvel Universe, composed of female mutant terrorists. They were formed by Cyber to commit acts of extortion, and worked for a notorious drug cartel. Shrew eventually quit the team and agreed to testify against the cartel for immunity.
The Belles, upon discovering their former teammate's betrayal, sought out to kill Shrew. The government then placed Shrew under the protection of X-Factor. The Belles ambushed X-Factor in a hotel, and in the ensuing battle, Briquette knocked Strong Guy through the ground into the basement, where she then proceeded to force the boiler to explode. Both X-Factor and Hell's Belles fled, but met up again, this time X-Factor overpowering the Belles and taking them into custody. After "Decimation" occurred, Flambé, Tremolo, and Vague were all depowered. Briquette is the only member of the Hell's Belles that possibly retains her mutant powers.

Easy listening (also known as orchestral pop) is a popular music genre and radio format that was most popular during the 1950s to 1970s. It is related to middle-of-the-road (MOR) music and encompasses instrumental recordings of standards, hit songs and popular non-rock vocals. It was differentiated from the mostly instrumental beautiful music format by its variety of styles, including a percentage of vocals, arrangements and tempos to fit various day parts during the broadcast day.
Easy listening music is often confused with so-called elevator music provided by Muzak Holdings and other music services for malls and elevators, or lounge music, but while it was popular in some of the same venues it bore only modest resemblance to the background sound of this kind of music.
A significant portion of easy listening music is purely instrumental and included some big band and orchestral arrangements of standards, themes from movies, bossa nova hits and small instrumental ensembles playing instrumental versions of popular songs, including light jazz and even some soft rock.

His vivid orchestrations present the wild, exotic sounds of the primitive forest in striking contrasts to breathtaking jazz interpretations that feature the great Plas Johnson alternating on tenor sax and alto flute. In some selections, a full string section is heard, characterizing the freshness of a dark, damp Rain Forest, the swift rush of Amazon Falls, or the brillian...

While I love a lot of Les Baxter's music, I'm not really a fan of his chorus records. However, I do have a soft spot for this single. I don't know why. It just seems a little more catchier than most of the other chorus work. Enjoy!

Hell's Belles - 1970 - Director: Maury Dexter - Starring Jeremy Slate and Jocelyn Lane - Original Music by Les Baxter (Hot Wind)
For the first time here on this channel, the man known as "the Godfather of Exotica" appears- yes, we're talking about Les Baxter. Regarded by many as "someone who was ahead of his time" - it definitely can be said that this composer and arranger had a seemingly unlimited musical imagination. Many people think that Les Baxter only recorded "exotic music" but that's clearly not the case. The majority of his recordings indeed are "sound pictures" of tropical gardens and jungles - populated by exotic Gods and Goddesses - but Baxter also recorded some genuine easy listening albums. Here's a nice example of that easy sound with Edu Lobo's "Reza" aka "Laia Ladaia". Baxter often made use of an extended chorus - mostly to add even more colour to his exotic sounding compositions - and here too ...
