Nilgai antelope are found throughout most of India, from the base of the Himalayas in the north, down to the state of Karnataka in the south, being absent only in eastern Bengal, Assam, the Malabar Coast, and regions close to the Bay of Bengal. They are found in small numbers along the Indian borders with Pakistan and Nepal.
The nilgai (Boselaphus tragocamelus), sometimes called nilgau, is an antelope, and is one of the most commonly seen wild animals of central and northern India and eastern Pakistan; it is also present in parts of southern Nepal. The species has become extinct in Bangladesh. The mature males appear ox-like and are also known as blue bulls. The nilgai is the biggest Asian antelope.
A blue bull is called a nil gai or nilgai in India, from nil meaning blue and gai meaning a bovine animal (literally 'cow'). They were known as the nilghor (nil = blue, ghor = horse) during the rule of Aurangzeb (Mughal Era).
The males have two black, conical horns, arising close together just behind the eyes. The horns project upwards, but are slightly curved forward; they measure between 15 and 24 centimetres (5.9 and 9.4 in) in a fully grown adult. Although the horns are usually smooth, in some older males, they may develop ring-shaped ridges near the base.
Nilgai are diurnal, and tend to form single-sex herds outside of the breeding season. Herds are not of fixed composition, with individuals joining and rejoining through the year. Female herds typically contain three to six adults, together with their calves, whereas bulls form herds of two to 18 individuals.[3] In winter, male blue bulls form herds of 30 to 100 animals in northern India.
नीलगाय हे कुरंग कुळातील हरीण असून भारतात आढळते. नावात गाय असले तरी हा प्राणी हरीण कुळातील आहे, चेहर्यामध्ये थोडेसे गाईचे साम्य असल्याने व बहुतांशी रंग काळसर निळ्या रंगाच्या असतात त्यामुळे नाव नीलगाय असे पडले आहे, इंग्रजीत याला ब्लूबुल असे म्हणतात. गाईशी असलेल्या साम्यामुळे हे हरीण पवित्र समजले जाते व शिकार त्यामानाने कमी होते. हे हरीण प्रामुख्याने भारताच्या कोरड्या प्रदेशात आढळते. राजस्थान व मध्य प्रदेश ह्या प्रदेशात सर्वाधिक वावर आहे.

Environment Minister Prakash Javadekar says the permit to shoot the blue bulls is valid till November in 31 of Bihar's 39 districts. Union minister Maneka Gandhi criticized this action of governments.

I had the pleasure of joining my blood brother Kyle in a classic South Texas spot and stalk hunt on a beautiful bull nilgai. This video contains NO STAGED scenes or FAKE STALKS, there are no retakes or second chances, just fair chase hunting caught on camera as it happened.
We spotted this magnificent bull and proceed to place a flawless stalk on it. Kyle lands a fatal shot and the Bull expires less than 100 yards from where it was hit. A great day to be alive....RISE-KILL-EAT!

The culling of nilgai in Bihar has triggered a spat between two Union ministers - women and child development minister and avid animal rights activist Maneka Gandhi and her environment and forests colleague Prakash Javadekar.
While Maneka slammed the ongoing killings, aimed at controlling the damage inflicted by the animal on crops, as a "massacre", Javadekar said the decision was in accordance with existing law.

The high-security North Block area near Parliament had an unusual visitor, a Nilgai, which was rescued in the afternoon. The Nilgai, suspected to have strayed from Central Forest Reserve Area located on the backside of the President’s Estate, was first spotted during early hours of the day and rescued around 2:15 PM, state forest department officials said. As soon as the Nilgai was spotted, a police team was rushed to the area, where VVIP movement was to start in a while. Nilgai
The nilgai (Boselaphus tragocamelus), sometimes called nilgau, is the largest Asian antelope. It is one of the most commonly seen wild mammals of central and northern India, often seen in farmland or scrub forest. The mature male appears ox-like and is also known as the blue bull. A blue bull is called a nil gai or nilgai in India, from nil meaning blue and gai meaning a bovine animal (literally 'cow'). It is also present in parts of southern Nepal and eastern Pakistan. The species has become extinct in Bangladesh. It was known as the nilghor (nil = blue, ghor = horse) during the rule of Aurangzeb in the Mughal era. It is the only member of genus Boselaphus.
Description
Nilgai stand 1.1 to 1.5 m (3 ft 7 in to 4 ft 11 in) at the shoulder and measure 1.7 to 2.1 m (5 ft 7 in to 6 ft 11 in) in head-body length, with a 45- to 50-cm (18- to 20-in) tail. Males are larger than females, weighing 109 to 288 kg (240 to 635 lb), with a maximum of 308 kg (679 lb), compared with the adult female weight of around 100 to 213 kg (220 to 470 lb).

The high-security North Block area near Parliament had an unusual visitor, a Nilgai, which was rescued in the afternoon. The Nilgai, suspected to have strayed from Central Forest Reserve Area located on the backside of the President’s Estate, was first spotted during early hours of the day and rescued around 2:15 PM, state forest department officials said. The nilgai (Boselaphus tragocamelus), sometimes called nilgau, is an antelope, and is one of the most commonly seen wild animals of central and northern India and eastern Pakistan; it is also present in parts of southern Nepal. The species has become extinct in Bangladesh. The mature males appear ox-like and are also known as blue bulls. The nilgai is the biggest Asian antelope.
A blue bull is called a nil gai or nilgai in India, from nil meaning blue and gai meaning a bovine animal (literally 'cow'). They were known as the nilghor (nil = blue, ghor = horse) during the rule of Aurangzeb (Mughal Era).
The males have two black, conical horns, arising close together just behind the eyes. The horns project upwards, but are slightly curved forward; they measure between 15 and 24 centimetres (5.9 and 9.4 in) in a fully grown adult. Although the horns are usually smooth, in some older males, they may develop ring-shaped ridges near the base.
Nilgai are diurnal, and tend to form single-sex herds outside of the breeding season. Herds are not of fixed composition, with individuals joining and rejoining through the year. Female herds typically contain three to six adults, together with their calves, whereas bulls form herds of two to 18 individuals.[3] In winter, male blue bulls form herds of 30 to 100 animals in northern India.
