In this episode we take a look at a dual AMD Supermicro machine with 32 Gigs of RAM and 9 hard drives. We create a RAID5 volume in software with 8 1TB drives and use LVM to slice that into logical volumes for xen virtual machines. We also take a look at the remote management capabilities of the system and see how you would rarely need to be near this machine to manage it!

Tech Tinkering - Dell Poweredge Server - 2.5" SAS Drives & RAID Controllers
I've had these servers sat around waiting for some attention for literally months, I got them very cheap, and I have my suspicions they were too cheap. I suspect I have bad RAID controllers, or am missing some vital piece of equipment. I've looked around and can't see any obvious "Raid Key" missing from inside, so I have the back planes, the drives, spare controllers, batteries and other stuff to all try. My ultimate aim is to have two of these servers boot, one from local disks and provide NFS to the other so it can disklessly boot. Barnes & Noble gave the hardware and tablet business a better-than-college try, often pushing technology boundaries to some acclaim, but little notice. Its newest tablet is really just a middle-of-the-road, multi-function tablet with a very affordable price tag. And perhaps that’s good enough. When Samsung unveiled the Tab 4 last April, few took notice. As far as I know, no one has ever come closer. Here's the second part of my most recent effort. Picking up from the moment I broke the scoreboard for the first time, I proceed to make a second million. An inside look at x86 CPU design
Software design and testing is hard, but what happens when each bug fix can cost months of delay and millions of dollars? In this talk we’ll take a behind-the-scenes look at the challenges in the design of a very complex, yet critical piece of hardware: the modern x86 CPU.
All hardware design and testing is complex, but x86 CPUs are designs that must work correctly basically 100% of the time. They are critical not only for running your applications, but for enforcing the security of the entire system. In this talk, we’ll explore what modern x86 CPU hardware looks like, describe some of the methodology around CPU testing, and discuss real-world hardware design.
So does that all make flawless hardware? Of course not! CPU bugs do happen, and when dealing with hardware bugs, it’s rarely as simple as “download this patch”. This talk will additionally look at some of the various capabilities used with modern chips to address late-breaking issues, from special configuration bits to microcode to even focused ion beams.
The goal of this talk is to not only provide the listener with a glimpse into the world of complex hardware design, but to hopefully inspire software engineers with new ideas on how to test equally critical software that must “just work”.

It was finally time to get some proper tools and snag a logic analyzer to help with debugging and other things. Pretty hard to beat for $11 off ebay.
Also looked into basic communication protocol of the AW-4 TCU. The hardware needs some work but data acquisition is possible sometimes. Hopefully with a few adjustments I can start making some better headway with that.

I've had these servers sat around waiting for some attention for literally months, I got them very cheap, and I have my suspicions they were too cheap. I suspect I have bad RAID controllers, or am missing some vital piece of equipment.
I've looked around and can't see any obvious "Raid Key" missing from inside, so I have the back planes, the drives, spare controllers, batteries and other stuff to all try.
My ultimate aim is to have two of these servers boot, one from local disks and provide NFS to the other so it can disklessly boot.
Let us take a long hard look at the hardware.

It’s hard to look at the Samsung Galaxy Tab 4 Nook and not think of it as a sort of surrender. Barnes & Noble gave the hardware and tablet business a better-than-college try, often pushing technology boundaries to some acclaim, but little notice. Its newest tablet is really just a middle-of-the-road, multi-function tablet with a very affordable price tag.
And perhaps that’s good enough.
When Samsung unveiled the Tab 4 last April, few took notice. It’s a pretty standard 7-inch Android 4.4 "KitKat" device with a solid Qualcomm Snapdragon quad-core CPU, a 1,280 x 800 screen and two very average cameras: 3 megapixels on the back and 1.2MP on the front.

In the new Nook, Barnes & Noble added a widget that duplicates some of the features found in the old and more powerful Nook HD, but more or less leaves alone the rest of the Android platform and standard Samsung software touches you’ll find on most of their tablets.
When opened side-by-side with Samsung’s far sexier Galaxy Tab S (8-inch), the interface similarities are unmistakable. Ultimately, this is more a Samsung product than it is a Barnes & Noble one.

The Tron 'one hour million': an unachievable goal. The measure of a Tron master is how close he gets to it. Once upon a time in the '80s, I got within five minutes of it. As far as I know, no one has ever come closer.
Here's the second part of my most recent effort. Picking up from the moment I broke the scoreboard for the first time, I proceed to make a second million. My second hour's standard of play is roughly similar to my first's: the time wasting screw ups are frequent, but minor.
This is what I call a 'User million', as all its stages are User. User millions are always faster than the first million. Scoring during the first million lags behind because the low level stages (RPG and Cobol) consume time without offering many points in compensation. All things being equal, the first million will usually take about a minute longer than subsequent millions.
This particular User million takes 1 hour, 5 minutes, 49 seconds. Although it includes some embarrassing moments, it is one of the best times you will ever see. Perfect play will beat this by no more than a minute, I promise you.
Notes on my gameplay:-
(1) No hard spinning, as my hardware doesn't include a dial
(2) What may look like reckless play is actually safe
(3) Always know in advance which light cycle pattern to use.
Notes on the recording:-
(1) Edited to begin just after my score reached 1,000,000
(2) At the one hour mark, my score is 1,909,586
(3) Edited to end as soon as my score reaches 2,000,000.
