A drawknife (drawing knife, draw shave, shaving knife) is a traditional woodworking hand tool used to shape wood by removing shavings. It consists of a blade with a handle at each end. The blade is much longer (along the cutting edge) than it is deep (from cutting edge to back edge). It is pulled or "drawn" (hence the name) toward the user.
The drawknife in the illustration has a blade 23 centimetres (9.1 in) although much shorter drawknives are also made. The blade is sharpened to a chisel bevel. Traditionally, it is a rounded, smooth bezel. The handles can be below the level of the blade (as in the illustration) or at the same level.
A drawknife is commonly used to remove large slices of wood for flat faceted work, to debark trees, or to create roughly rounded or cylindrical billets for further work on a lathe, or it can shave like a spokeshave plane, where finer finishing is less of concern than a rapid result. The thin blade lends itself to create complex concave or convex curves.

This is a video on the basics of how to make a draw-knife. Expect at least an hour's worth of grinding/sharpening, and total time of around 5 hours from start to finish. Be careful when sharpening; don't overheat the piece.

A quick clean up, sharpening, sanding and oiling of the handles and it's ready to go. Antique and vintage hand tools are a joy to work with and can be had for a great price. If you have access and the interest in these tools, I'm sure you would enjoy working on them too. Thanks for watching, The Homestead Craftsman

Finally, a "good enough" draw knife from a flea market! Using my homemade knife was ok, but having only one handle, it would turn on me. This little one is perfect for what I would use it for, so I sharpen it up, and give it a Go! Thanx for watching, and hit that "like" or subscribe if you're so inclined! Like gaming videos? Part two of a two-part video of step by step instructions on how to sharpen a drawknife.
A drawknife is a single edged blade with two handles. Similar in shape and action to a chisel, the blade is shaped with a single bevel along its length opposite to a flat plane. Most of the antique drawknives I own have been sharpened with a variation of a double bevel. To fix this one I have to flatten the back. In June 2015 I spent some time in the forge with renowned blade smith Nic Westermann and a group of woodworking friends to learn how to make a drawknife. We all had a great time and learned lots in the process. We also all came away with quality tools that we had made ourselves with Nic's excellent guidance. Between sessions in the forge we also had a great day out fishing at a nearby beach, check out 'forging and fishing with friends' for an overview of the whole weekend. This is my review and field use of the flexcut 3 inch draw knife and the palm gouge and the right handed Scorp and the fine detail knife
I was wanting to make a new pattern I came up with for a skinning knife. While I was in the hardware store looking at Stihl chainsaws like everyone does I noticed that the lawn edger blade looked perfect for what I had in mind. It already had a large hole in the right place to make a large finger choil. The metal is good and strong to with stand hitting rocks, and concrete and the price was right. Turns out these edger blades make pretty good knives. I started Knife making as a project to make a personal gift for each of my children. The first three knives that I made with hand files to do the shaping of the bevels. This is a long labor intensive process. I did make a wooden bevel filing jig which helped me keep the bevels at the desired angles. After make the first three knives...
