This is the official online (YouTube) release of "Nick Drake: Life of a Fragile Genius" by Elliot Robinson.
Correction on false information: I stated Nick Drake could not sing and play guitar at the same time in his 1971 "Pink Moon" (third album) recording sessions, when in fact he was in this state only when working on his fourth album in 1974. Nick died before completion of this album, and so the previously unreleased material was published in later years.
Many articles in this video come from the Nick Drake book "Remembered for a While". Available on Amazon UK for a fair £26.

This is a remastered version of the 1969 album "Five Leaves Left" by Nick Drake.
The remastering involved a thorough hiss reduction, in order to reveal as much detail as possible from the original recording made at Sound Techniques Studios in London.
Compared to the official release, you can enjoy a clearer and more natural sound. Listen for example to the delicate nuances in Nick's voice in ''The Thoughts of Mary Jane'' and "River Man" or the harmonic intricacies in ''Time Has Told Me" and "Man in a Shed". In most of the songs it is possible to follow with more ease Drake's extraordinary fingerpicking style.
While preserving the original spirit of the album, with its ''misty'' character, I tried to produce a less noisy and more enjoyable overall sound, recreating what must have been the acoustic feeling of the recording session.
I really hope Nick Drake's fans will appreciate it. Any comments welcome!

Nicholas Rodney "Nick" Drake (19 June 1948 – 25 November 1974) was an English singer-songwriter and musician who was known for his sombre guitar-based songs. He failed to find a wide audience during his lifetime but his work has gradually achieved wider notice and recognition. Drake signed to Island Records when he was 20 years old and released his debut album, Five Leaves Left, in 1969. By 1972, he had recorded two more albums—Bryter Layter and Pink Moon. Neither sold more than 5,000 copies on initial release. Drake's reluctance to perform live, or be interviewed, contributed to his lack of commercial success.
Drake suffered from depression and insomnia throughout his life and these topics were often reflected in his lyrics. On completion of his third album, 1972's Pink Moon, he withdrew from both live performance and recording, retreating to his parents' home in rural Warwickshire. There is no known footage of the adult Drake; he was only ever captured in still photographs and in home footage from his childhood. On 25 November 1974, Drake died from an overdose of amitriptyline, a prescribed antidepressant; he was 26 years old.

Correction on false information: I stated Nick Drake could not sing and play guitar at the same time in his 1971 "Pink Moon" (third album) recording sessions, when in fact he was in this state only when working on his fourth album in 1974. Nick died before completion of this album, and so the previously unreleased material was published in later years.

The remastering involved a thorough hiss reduction, in order to reveal as much detail as possible from the original recording made at Sound Techniques Studios in London.
Compared to the official release, you can enjoy a clearer and more natural sound. Listen for example to the delicate nuances in Nick's voice in ''The Thoughts of Mary Jane'' and "River Man" or the harmonic intricacies in ''Time Has Told Me" and "Man in a Shed". In most of the songs it is possible to follow with more ease Drake's extraordinary fingerpicking style.
While preserving the original spirit of the album, with its ''misty'' character, I tried to produce a less noisy and more enjoyable overall sound, recreating what must have been the acoustic feeling of the recording session.
I really hope Nick Drake's fans will appreciate it. Any comments welcome!

This is the only known footage of Nick Drake speaking anything more than a couple of words in a studio, this was recorded on a portable tape machine at 5am in the morning after a night of partying..the origonal footage is very poor as the tape had degraded badly but i have spent time and effort to enhance the footage to an acceptable standard. Dedicated to the memory of a consumate Artist and excellent guitarist and songwriter, who met his death far to young in 1974,..I hope where ever you are Nick your still playing your Guitar. -

This is the video I produced to complement Nick Drake's wonderful "Cello Song", which was first broadcast on Vintage TV. It's one of those songs that evokes great memories. Nick Drake was at Cambridge University when he wrote Five Leaves Left, the album from which "Cello Song" comes. He had lost his schoolboy interest in sport (he had been an accomplished sprinter) and preferred to stay in his college room smoking marijuana, and listening to and playing music - hence the footage of Cambridge in the late 60s. The rest of the footage reflects what was happening around the same time including the legalise pot demos and the 1969 Isle Of Wight pop festival that could so easily have been a showcase for Nick's talents, had he been less reluctant to perform live. It's one of those songs that evokes great memories. Nick Drake was at Cambridge University when he wrote Five Leaves Left, the album from which "Cello Song" comes. He had lost his schoolboy interest in sport (he had been an accomplished sprinter) and preferred to stay in his college room smoking marijuana, and listening to and playing music - hence the footage of Cambridge in the late 60s. The rest of the footage reflects what was happening around the same time including the legalise pot demos and the 1969 Isle Of Wight pop festival that could so easily have been a showcase for Nick's talents, had he been less reluctant to perform live. The cello was footage was specially shot for the video. I cropped it to a 4:3 aspect ratio to match the archive footage.
Sadly after only three albums, at the tender age of 26, Nick died from an overdose of antidepressants. His melancholic style has grown in popularity hugely in recent years, and now he is a much bigger star than he ever was in his lifetime.

FULL LP: Demo Collection Volume One by Nick Drake (Recorded 1967-1971) (Release Date Unknown) HD
R.I.P. Nick Drake (1948-1974), one of the most underrated artists ever! This album contains demos he recorded during the time period of 1967-1971. The print quality for the cover is actually pretty cheap, and it feels a bit like construction paper. The label on the vinyl record itself is black with nothing but "JTAH-TA" on Side A, and JTAH-TB" on Side B. The release year is unknown. Nicholas Rodney "Nick" Drake (19 June 1948 – 25 November 1974) was an English singer-songwriter and musician, known for his acoustic guitar-based songs. The print quality for the cover is actually pretty cheap, and it feels a bit like construction paper. The label on the vinyl record itself is black with nothing but "JTAH-TA" on Side A, and JTAH-TB" on Side B. The release year is unknown.

Probably just as valuable to a modern collector is the second press with the same `Pink Black Block Design` but on a smoother finished label. One of the `Holy Grails` of UK Record Collecting is the debut LP by Folkie `Nick Drake` called `Five Leaves Left` basically ignored on release in 1969 the music has survived Nick`s death and countless musical style transitions to be seen by many today as one of the greatest musical works of the Pop/Rock era. Thus demand for this original 1st UK Issue has outstripped it`s original pressing. A truly `Mint` copy now would easily fetch well over 1000 British Pounds. There are however some things to look out for to make sure it is the first original issue and not a later issue/replica: The very 1st pressing has a `Textured Pink Black Block Design` matt label with the ridge around the edge, is on heavy thick vinyl with Run Out Groove/Matrix numbers ILPS 9105 A//2 & ILPS 9105 B//2 (machine stamped not hand written). The gatefold sleeve was printed by Ernest J. Day and the track listing on the sleeve has the order for `Day is Done` and `Way to Blue` reversed. The labels however show the correct track order listing. The Island Records address on the back is Basing Street, London W11. Probably just as valuable to a modern collector is the second press with the same `Pink Black Block Design` but on a smoother finished label.
