Peter Blegvad (born August 14, 1951) is an American musician, singer-songwriter, writer, and cartoonist. He was a founding member of German/English avant-pop band Slapp Happy, which later merged briefly with Henry Cow, and has released many solo and collaborative albums. He is the son of Lenore and Erik Blegvad, who were respectively, a children's book author and illustrator.
Peter Blegvad's life began in America – he was born in New York City and originally raised in Connecticut. When he was 14, the Blegvad family moved to England in 1965, unhappy with the social climate of America following the assassination of John F. Kennedy and the threat posed by the Vietnam draft to Peter and his younger brother Kristoffer. Blegvad was educated at St Christopher School, Letchworth, a boarding school where he met his musical collaborator Anthony Moore. Moore and Blegvad played in various bands during their schooldays, alongside fellow musicians such as Neil Murray (then a drummer, later a well-known hard rock bass guitarist).
Peter often is used to refer to Saint Peter, a disciple of Jesus Christ. It can also refer to many other people, of which only a few are listed here. This page only lists people commonly referred to as "Peter" and nothing else; for others, please see List of people named Peter.
Andrew John "Andy" Partridge (born 11 November 1953 in Mtarfa, Malta) is an English singer, songwriter, and guitarist. He was a founding member, guitarist and chief songwriter of the pop/new wave band, XTC. He lives in Swindon, Wiltshire, where he was brought up.
In addition to his work with XTC, Partridge has released one solo album on Virgin Records in 1980 called Take Away/the Lure of Salvage. Partridge has also released demos of his songs under his own name in The Official Fuzzy Warbles Collector's Album and the Fuzzy Warbles album series on his APE House record label. Eight volumes of Fuzzy Warbles are now available, as well as the Fuzzy Warbles Collector's Album, which includes a bonus ninth disc Hinges. He has collaborated (as performer, writer or record producer) with recording artists, including Martin Newell, with whom he recorded and produced an album in 1993 entitled The Greatest Living Englishman released in Japan as a duo album. He has additionally worked with Peter Blegvad, Harold Budd, Jamie Cullum, Stephen Duffy, Terry Hall, The Heads, Charlotte Hatherley, Robyn Hitchcock, Jen Olive, The Residents, Thomas Dolby, David Yazbek, Miles Kane, The Nines, Pugwash and Meat Beat Manifesto. In 2010, Partridge released a limited edition CD of music inspired by science fiction illustrator Richard M. Powers' art titled Powers. In 2012, Partridge's worked with Mike Keneally on the album Wing Beat Fantastic, a Mike Keneally release where 8 of the songs were co-written with Partridge.
John Greaves (1602 – 8 October 1652) was an English mathematician, astronomer and antiquary.
He was born in Colemore, near Alresford, Hampshire. He was the eldest son of John Greaves, rector of Colemore, and Sarah Greaves. His brothers were Nicholas Greaves, Thomas Greaves and Sir Edward Greaves, physician to Charles II.
His father ran a school for sons of the neighbouring gentry, where Greaves began his education. Aged 15, he went to Balliol College, Oxford between 1617–1621, gaining a B.A. degree. In 1624 he was the first of five newly elected Fellows of Merton College, becoming M.A. in 1628. He began to study astronomy and oriental languages, and especially the works of the ancient eastern astronomers. In 1630 Greaves was chosen professor of geometry at Gresham College, London. Through his predecessor, Peter Turner, he later met archbishop William Laud, the chancellor of Oxford University and Visitor (patron) of Merton College. Laud was keen to make English editions of Greek and Arabic authors, and Greaves' later travels abroad involved collecting manuscripts and books for presentation to his new patron.

'Daughter' is one of Peter Blegvad's best known songs which was covered by Loudon Wainwright III after he toured with Peter in the 1990s. This version is taken from the 'Choices Under Pressure' album. Perhaps best known for his Independent on Sunday comic strip 'Leviathan', Peter was The Poetry Trust's illustrator for 2009 (supplying the visuals for our Festival programme booklet and Poetry Paper)and as a result also made a rare solo and acoustic appearance at the Aldeburgh Poetry Festival in Suffolk that autumn. To find out more about the Festival visit www.thepoetrytrust.org.
Peter Blegvad & John Greaves - The Only Song Album "Unearthed" (1994)
Four songs from Peter Blegvad's performance at NYC's The Kitchen in the mid-80s. One song features John Greaves on piano. Not included is all the material from Kew.Rhone. performed with Lisa Herman (vocals), John Greaves (vocals, piano), and Peter (vocals, guitar). Never before shared publicly. Note: This is a quick dupe from a DV dub of selects from the original Hi8 master. No fooling with the audio or color correction. Songs performed are: 1. The Naked Shakespeare (Illustrated) – Peter solo with slide projections of illustrations created to accompany the song 0:00 2. Something Else Is Working Harder – Peter solo 3:30 3. In the Sickbay – Peter solo 9:22 *** correction: track 3 is Riding Tigers 4. How Beautiful You Are – Peter and John Greaves 11:07
Awesome early '80s pop rock song. One of the best vinyl singles i ever owned (past tense unfortunately). Hard to find track online unless you're willing to purchase Peter Blegvad's otherwise mundane 1983 'The Naked Shakespeare' album.
Song from Peter Blegvad's seriously under-rated 'King Strut & Other Stories' album. Peter will be making a rare solo and acoustic appearance at the Aldeburgh Poetry Festival in Suffolk on Saturday 7 November (5.45-6.30pm) - box office 01728 687110. Perhaps best known for his Independent on Sunday comic strip 'Leviathan', Peter is The Poetry Trust's illustrator for 2009 (he's been supplying the visuals for our Festival programme booklet and Poetry Paper) - hence his appearance at The Aldeburgh Poetry Festival this autumn. He'll also be taking part in talks and discussions. More details at www.thepoetrytrust.org.
From the album 'Gonwards' released on the Ape House label October 2012 Film by Stu Rowe and Andy Partridge Lyrics and vocal by Peter Blegvad- music by Andy Partridge and Stu Rowe Flute - Frank Abrams Available here.. https://www.burningshed.com/store/ape/product/412/4147/ Lyrics From germ to gem the story grew, from gem to germ the hours flew. No one wearied of the drone as the teller rambled on and on and on and on and on. From dawn to dusk, from dusk to dawn. Weeks went by, then months, then years when we were dead between the ears. I've been in the Malvern Hills, I've been reading 'Daffodils'. Now William Wordsworth's yellow head (equine head) nods upon my neck instead. I cut my finger to the bone I heard a distant telephone I'll take the call from far away I know everything I...

I don't own the rights to the song or the images -- this video is simply placed here to promote Peter's music. Go to the websites shown at the end of the video and explore his work -- it's pretty amazing. Golden Helmet (Peter Blegvad) When a knight retires, he lives alone in a thatch roof cottage made of local stone. Was there once a lady? Maybe so. He doesn’t say, so we don’t know. Up in the attic under lots of dust, his chain mail armour turning red with rust. His Toledo blade, now gone dull, his shield and banner with the painted skull. He tells a tinker ‘Take it all away, but leave my golden helmet, let the helmet stay.’ When a knight retires, he has noisy dreams. he remembers how his helmet amplified the screams of men dismembered, torn limb from limb. At night it all comes b...

Desperate Straights is an album by British avant-rock groups Slapp Happy and Henry Cow, recorded at Virgin Records' Manor studios in November 1974. It was the first of two collaborative albums by the two groups and was released in February 1975. Almost all of the album comprises Slapp Happy composed material and it is for this reason that it is generally regarded as a Slapp Happy album with backing by Henry Cow. The music is an unusual blend of avant-garde music and nostalgic pop, and the success of this collaboration led to the two bands merging. The lyrics of the song "A Worm Is at Work" refers to the song "War", which was recorded during the same sessions as this album, but was released later on In Praise of Learning, the second Henry Cow/Slapp Happy album. Slapp Happy Dagmar Krause (c...

Sacred objects once were rare, now you find them everywhere. John Henry's hammer all painted red, a loaded pistol, an empty bed, a cement mixer, a walking cane, the arrow on a weather vane. A tired bird flying South, sounds come from its open mouth. Yeah, sing it, tired bird! A tired bird to rest its wings perches on one of the sacred things. The light inside them both is such that nothing happens when they touch. Nothing happens, when it does...
