Porcupine Tree are an English rock band formed by musician Steven Wilson in 1987. The band began essentially as a solo project for Wilson, who created all of the band's music. However, by 1993, Wilson desired to work in a band environment, and so brought on frequent collaborators Richard Barbieri on keyboards, Colin Edwin on bass and Chris Maitland on drums as permanent band members. With Wilson still in charge of guitar and lead vocals, this would remain the lineup until 2001, when the band recruited Gavin Harrison to replace Maitland on drums.
Porcupine Tree's early sound evokes a style of psychedelic rock comparable to that of progressive rock band Pink Floyd. Upon signing with Kscope record label in the late 1990s, the band approached a more mainstream alternative rock sound. By the early 2000s, the band signed to a major record label and shifted their sound again, this time in a more progressive metal direction.
After the release and tour in support of their tenth studio album, The Incident, the band became inactive as Wilson began to focus on his solo career. While not formally broken up, they also have no particular reformation plans beyond "someday", with members all working on separate projects, and Wilson committing himself to his solo work through most of 2015.
Deadwing is the eighth studio album by British progressive rock band Porcupine Tree, released on 28 March 2005. It quickly became the band's best selling album, though was later surpassed by Fear of a Blank Planet. The album is based on a screenplay written by Steven Wilson and Mike Bennion, and is essentially a ghost story. Wilson had expressed the intention to eventually have this film script made into a movie.
The album produced two singles, "Shallow" and "Lazarus". "Shallow" also appeared in the movie Four Brothers. It can be heard as background music in a bar. The album also produced three music videos for "Lazarus", "The Start of Something Beautiful", and "Glass Arm Shattering".
The album includes collaborations with King Crimson's Adrian Belew, who plays guitar solos on the title track "Deadwing" and "Halo", and Opeth's Mikael Åkerfeldt, who adds vocal harmonies on "Deadwing", "Lazarus", and "Arriving Somewhere But Not Here". He also plays the second guitar solo on "Arriving Somewhere But Not Here".
Porcupines are rodents with a coat of sharp spines, or quills, that protect against predators. The term covers two families of animals, the Old World porcupines and New World porcupines. Both families belong to the Hystricognathi branch of the vast order Rodentia and display similar coats of quills, but they still are quite different and are not closely related.
The Old World porcupines live in southern Europe, Asia (western as well as southern), and most of Africa. They are large, terrestrial, and strictly nocturnal. In taxonomic terms, they form the family Hystricidae.
The New World porcupines are indigenous to North America and northern South America. They live in wooded areas and can climb trees, where some species spend their entire lives. They are less strictly nocturnal than their Old World relatives, and generally smaller. In taxonomic terms, they form the family Erethizontidae.
Porcupines are the third-largest of the rodents, behind the capybara and the beaver. Most porcupines are about 25–36 in (64–91 cm) long, with an 8–10 in (20–25 cm) long tail. Weighing 12–35 lb (5.4–15.9 kg), they are rounded, large, and slow. Porcupines occur in various shades of brown, gray, and white. Porcupines' spiny protection resembles that of the unrelated erinaceomorph hedgehogs and Australian spiny anteaters or monotreme echidnas.
In botany, a tree is a perennial plant with an elongated stem, or trunk, supporting branches and leaves in most species. In some usages, the definition of a tree may be narrower, including only woody plants with secondary growth, plants that are usable as lumber or plants above a specified height. Trees are not a taxonomic group but include a variety of plant species that have independently evolved a woody trunk and branches as a way to tower above other plants to compete for sunlight. In looser senses, the taller palms, the tree ferns, bananas and bamboos are also trees. Trees tend to be long-lived, some reaching several thousand years old. The tallest known tree, a coast redwood named Hyperion, stands 115.6 m (379 ft) high. Trees have been in existence for 370 million years. It is estimated that there are just over 3 trillion mature trees in the world.
A tree typically has many secondary branches supported clear of the ground by the trunk. This trunk typically contains woody tissue for strength, and vascular tissue to carry materials from one part of the tree to another. For most trees it is surrounded by a layer of bark which serves as a protective barrier. Below the ground, the roots branch and spread out widely; they serve to anchor the tree and extract moisture and nutrients from the soil. Above ground, the branches divide into smaller branches and shoots. The shoots typically bear leaves, which capture light energy and convert it into sugars by photosynthesis, providing the food for the tree's growth and development. Flowers and fruit may also be present, but some trees, such as conifers, instead have pollen cones and seed cones; others, such as tree ferns, produce spores instead.
Albums of recorded music were developed in the early 20th century, first as books of individual 78rpm records, then from 1948 as vinyl LP records played at 33 1⁄3 rpm. Vinyl LPs are still issued, though in the 21st century albums sales have mostly focused on compact disc (CD) and MP3 formats. The audio cassette was a format used in the late 1970s through to the 1990s alongside vinyl.
An album may be recorded in a recording studio (fixed or mobile), in a concert venue, at home, in the field, or a mix of places. Recording may take a few hours to several years to complete, usually in several takes with different parts recorded separately, and then brought or "mixed" together. Recordings that are done in one take without overdubbing are termed "live", even when done in a studio. Studios are built to absorb sound, eliminating reverberation, so as to assist in mixing different takes; other locations, such as concert venues and some "live rooms", allow for reverberation, which creates a "live" sound. The majority of studio recordings contain an abundance of editing, sound effects, voice adjustments, etc. With modern recording technology, musicians can be recorded in separate rooms or at separate times while listening to the other parts using headphones; with each part recorded as a separate track.
from the album "DeadWing" Lyrics: And something warm and soft just passed through here It took the precious things that I hold dearer It rifled through the grey and disappeared The creeping darkness makes the small hours clearer Like a cancer scare In the dentist's chair Sucking in the air Wire across the stair Kicking down the door At your local store With the world at war Voices through the floor Unexpected news Wearing high heeled shoes Blowing out the fuse Paying all your dues Deadwing lullaby Like a fracture tied It's a worthless lie To the public eye I don't take waifs and strays back home with me My bleeding heart does not extend to charity Yes I'd have to say I like my privacy And did you know you're on closed circuit TV? So smile at me And a dream you had Of your mum and dad...

Oh hell yes. Rampaging stoner rock witha thunderous rhythm section and big riffs aplenty. Add in the strong, gritty vocals and you have a truly kickass full-length. This is great with that bluesy sound. Really outstanding vocals and these guys are truly outstanding musicians. A vocalist who sounds like Jared from Mississippi Bones and a band who sounds like a Judas Priest, Cojones & early Queensrÿche jam session. Blistering stoner/southern rock. Full of superb riffing and great throaty bluesy vocals. Dead Wing's s/t album injects you with a heavy dose of hard rockin' blues and slick guitar riffs. Super good vocalist with that perfect gritty, bluesy voice. Its hard to pick a favorite song, they are all really good! Check out their other project sans a vocalist. All instrumental heavy s...

The song has been re-recorded in the studio by the current line-up during the Deadwing album sessions. Mikael Åkerfeldt of the band Opeth performed harmony vocals on that version. It was released as a bonus track on the American version of Deadwing. This song was written by Steven Wilson: You move in waves You never retrace Your newest craze Straight out of the Face by the bed unread I'm left behind Like all the others Some fall for you It doesn't make much difference if they do She changes every time you look By summer it was all gone - now she's moved on She called you every other day So savour it it's all gone - now she's moved on So for a while Everything seemed new Did we connect? Or was it all just biding time for you? "All rights reserved"

I spent about an hour learning this song before recording it, so Be nice to me....Mind the mistakes. I love Gavin Harrison, so this is one of my favorites. I had some fun with this one. Gavin also hits REALLY hard, so I had to as well, almost wrecking my drumset in the process. I like this one! Mapex Saturn Drums TRX Cymbals Speed Cobra Pedals Vic Firth Sticks

The title song of the most excellent Deadwing album (this was the first PT song that i listened, and it blew my mind). I have three live versions of this song, but i feel that this is the less crappy one (in terms of sound quality, of course). As always, no copyright infringement intended, just wanted to share a good and no longer played song. So, please, don't sue me (i'm but a humble thesist)

Turn up your volume. This version retains the dynamic range that was there before the final master, which crushed the quality of the recording in favor of volume (read "the loudness war"). Dynamic Range rating: DR13 http://i.imgur.com/Ityun6c.png I've downmixed the 5.1 DVD-A of Deadwing, and the results were amazing, so I felt like I had to share it. The audio was encoded with the AAC codec @ 320kb/s. It really does sound better uncompressed, but that's the best I could do for Youtube. All rights to this material belong to Lava Records and UMG.
WATCH IN HIGH QUALITY! The reason I say that is because the audio is much better in HQ, and my voice doesn't sound so nasally and feminine (it's the damn camera's lack of bass, I tells ya!) Probably my favourite PT song, along with Blackest eyes and Blank Planet. Harder to cover than I first thought, thanks to Wilson's complex production...one guy with an acoustic can only do so much. I also had to cut it a bit shorter. The vocals were more an afterthought on this track, but it didn't sound too bad so I left them in. Hope you PT nuts enjoy :)

When Signify was reissued in 2003 on Delerium Records and in 2004 on Snapper Music, Insignificance was packaged as a second disc of Signify, with a slightly altered track list. Porcupine Tree's debut is really one big in-joke, which actually makes for a better reason to record something that pretends to be profoundly deep through and through. As released, it doesn't make mention of the tracks' origins as the supposed product of a mysterious cult psych/prog rock band, but the packaging and artwork (even the fonts) would make the Dukes of Stratosphear proud. Steve Wilson's singing is noticeably higher at points than it would be in later years -- chalk it up to his relative youth or a desire to sound appropriately wispy (or on the lovely "Nine Cats," like David Gilmour). On a sheer technical level, though, Wilson can't be beat. Recording and producing his material solo (outside of a couple of guest appearances) before the big '90s revolution in home recording quali...

Since the age of 10, Steven Wilson has been making music. Whether as a solo artist or the driving force behind Porcupine Tree, creating sound is simply what he does. And, here, he admits that his dedication to art has come at the expense of having a family. In a very personal and revealing interview, Wilson explains his motivation and general outlook on the music industry. * Apparently This Matters is an interview series by Jarrett Bellini. The concept it simple: I have a case filled with postcards. On the back of each postcard, I write different topics. We pick these cards at random. And then we talk. ** My Production Gear: http://www.jarrettbellini.com/2016/12/my-production-gear.html
Playing Toronto's newest venue, The Queen Elizabeth Theatre, on September 30, 2009 to a sold out crowd was UK's Porcupine Tree, whose sound can only be described as progressive, experimental, psychedelic metal. Spencer Matulaitis had a chance to sit down with bassist (among other things) Colin Edwin. They chatted about the new album, the variety of sounds the band produces, their career so far and what the future holds for Porcupine Tree. And something warm and soft just passed through here
It took the precious things that I hold dearer
It rifled through the grey and disappeared
The creeping darkness makes the small hours clearer
Like a cancer scare
In the dentist's chair
Sucking in the air
Wire across the stair
Kicking down the door
At your local store
With the world at war
Voices through the floor
Unexpected news
Wearing high heeled shoes
Blowing out the fuse
Paying all your dues
Deadwing lullaby
Like a fracture tied
It's a worthless lie
To the public eye
I don't take waifs and strays back home with me
My bleeding heart does not extend to charity
Yes I'd have to say I like my privacy
And did you know you're on closed circuit TV? So smile at me
And a dream you had
Of your mum and dad
On a beach somewhere
And the poison air
With the cancer threat
In a cigarette
Deadwing lullaby
Find a place to hide
And from the yellow windows of the last train
A spectre from the next life breathes his fog on the pane
I look with you into the speeding black rain
Afraid to touch someone, afraid to ask her for her name
And in the morning when I find I have lost you
