South Sudan's refugees make perilous journey across the White Nile
Men, women and children arrive in the town of Minkamen after a life-threatening river traverse to escape the fighting in the civil war. Dawn was just beginning to cast a shimmer over the White Nile as a heavily laden boat came into view. The metal barge, measuring 30ft from bow to stern, navigated a maze of verdant reedbeds before drawing up near the shore, allowing its haggard passengers to reach a muddy bank by wading through the shallows. One by one they disembarked: women cradling bewildered babies, children carrying their younger siblings, men weighed down by bundles of possessions including -- in one case - a Kalashnikov assault rifle complete with belts stuffed with ammunition. These new arrivals in the town of Minkamen on Tuesday were the latest refugees of South Sudan's civil war. They had just endured a perilous night journey across the White Nile to escape the besieged city of Bor, which government forces are trying to wrest back from rebels. Others have not been so lucky. At least 200 South Sudanese civilians drowned in a ferry accident while fleeing fresh fighting between government forces and rebels around the city of Malakal, a northern oil city. It is one of the worst single incidents reported in a month of conflict between forces loyal to either President Salva Kiir or his former vice president Riek Machar. "The reports we have are of between 200 to 300 people, including women and children. The boat was overloaded," said an army spokesman told AFP. "They all drowned. They were fleeing the fighting that broke out again in Malakal." Philip Aguer said the tragedy happened on Tuesday, although local media reported it occurred overnight on Sunday. Elsewhere in South Sudan, people from the Nuer tribe have been driven from areas held by Salva Kiir, the president from the Dinka tribe. Here, the situation is reversed: Dinkas are fleeing ethnic killings carried out by the largely Nuer rebels. So great is the exodus that Bor and the surrounding area are thought to be almost empty. Most of their people have crossed to Minkamen on the west bank, which now hosts the biggest concentration of refugees in South Sudan. Some 85,000 people have arrived here in the last four weeks, overwhelming a resident population of about 60,000. Four boats landed at dawn yesterday, delivering another 200 refugees. South Sudan Nile ferry sinks with more than 200 dead For more Latest and Breaking News Headlines SUBSCRIBE to https://www.youtube.com/user/ZakWorldNEWS More than 200 civilians in South Sudan have drowned in a Nile ferry accident while fleeing fighting in the town of Malakal, an army spokesman has said. He said women and children were among the victims in Sunday's disaster. More than 350,000 people have been displaced by the fighting between the South Sudanese government and rebel forces, according to the UN. Rebels say they have captured Malakal, which is the gateway to the oilfields of the Upper Nile region. But there is no independent confirmation of the claim. "The reports we have are of between 200 to 300 people, including women and children. The boat was overloaded," army spokesman Philip Aguer told the AFP news agency. "They all drowned. They were fleeing the fighting that broke out again in Malakal," he added. Malakal is located on the banks of the White Nile - just north of its confluence with the Sobat River. Thousands of civilians have been trying to escape the clashes by crossing the river, but many say they simply cannot afford to pay for a boat, says the BBC's Andrew Harding in South Sudan. One refugee, Akuch, told our correspondent that she had had to borrow as much as 150 Sudanese pounds (£40; $66) to cross the river. Some 9,000 civilians have recently arrived at a UN base in Malakal, almost doubling the number of people seeking shelter there, our correspondent says. Malakal has already changed hands several times since the conflict began last month. In the south, government troops are believed to be advancing on Bor - the only major town previously in rebel hands. Meanwhile, talks aimed at securing a ceasefire in South Sudan are currently taking place in the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa. The negotiations are being overseen by the East African regional bloc, Igad. The violence erupted on 15 December between forces loyal to President Salva Kiir and soldiers backing Riek Machar, his former vice-president. President Kiir is a member of South Sudan's largest ethnic group, the Dinka, while Mr Machar is from the Nuer community - the country's second largest. The conflict has seen reports of mass killings along ethnic lines even though both men have prominent supporters among their rival's community. The UN estimates that more than 1,000 people have died since the conflict began on 15 December. South Sudan seceded from Sudan in 2011 after a long and bloody conflict, to become the world's newest state. Nile
The Nile iaro; Ancient Egyptian: Ḥ'pī and Iteru) is a major north-flowing river in northeastern Africa, generally regarded as the longest river in the world. It is 6,853 km long. The Nile is an "international" river as its water resources are shared by eleven countries, namely, Tanzania, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Kenya, Ethiopia, Eritrea, South Sudan, Sudan and Egypt. In particular, the Nile is the primary water source of Egypt and the northern Sudan. The Nile has two major tributaries, the White Nile and Blue Nile. The White Nile is considered to be the headwaters and primary stream of the Nile itself. The Blue Nile, however, is the source of most of the water and fertile soil. The White Nile is longer and rises in the Great Lakes region of central Africa, with the most distant source still undetermined but located in either Rwanda or Burundi. It flows north through Tanzania, Lake Victoria, Uganda and South Sudan. The Blue Nile (Amharic: ዓባይ?, ʿĀbay) begins at Lake Tana in Ethiopia and flows into Sudan from the southeast. The two rivers meet near the Sudanese capital of Khartoum. The northern section of the river flows almost entirely through desert, from Sudan into Egypt, a country whose civilization has depended on the river since ancient times. Most of the population and cities of Egypt lie along those parts of the Nile valley north of Aswan, and nearly all the cultural and historical sites of Ancient Egypt are found along riverbanks. The Nile ends in a large delta that empties into the Mediterranean Sea. Etymology In the ancient Egyptian language, the Nile is called Ḥ'pī or Iteru, meaning "river", represented by the hieroglyphs shown on the left (literally itrw, and 'waters' determinative). In Coptic, the words piaro (Sahidic) or phiaro (Bohairic) meaning "the river" (lit. p(h).iar-o "the.canal-great") come from the same ancient name. The English name Nile and the Arabic names en-Nîl and an-Nîl both derive from the Latin Nilus and the Ancient Greek Νεῖλος. Beyond that, however, the etymology is disputed. One possible etymology derives it from a Semitic Nahal, meaning "river". The standard English names "White Nile" and "Blue Nile" to refer to the river's headwaters derive from Arabic names formerly applied only to the Sudanese stretches which meet at Khartoum.
