Follow DW’s Lukas Stege to Wuppertal in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany
DW Travel Guide Lukas Stege shows you the famous suspension railway in Wuppertal, a spectacular landmark in this city in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia.
Wuppertal was once the center of the German textile industry. And philosopher Friedrich Engels, known as one of the founders of Marxism, lived here. In the video you’ll find out why the Engels monument is very popular with Chinese tourists.
Lukas’s climbing session in the hilly Bergisches Land region around Wuppertal is a real highlight. In spite of his fear of heights, he tries to climb up Müngstener Brücke, Germany’s highest railway bridge. It’s breathtaking!

Wuppertal, Germany Schwebebahn
Located in the hills of Wuppertal Germany is a unique suspended railway which opened in 1901. This is the oldest monorail system in the world and the only one of its kind. It is amazing to see how this centuries old transportation is still providing fast, efficient, smooth, pollution free, traffic free transportation today! The new trains which entered service in 2017 are sleek and modern. They have a sightseers window in the back perfect for viewing the river and city from above!

Walking in WUPPERTAL / Germany 🇩🇪- Elberfeld - 4K 60fps (UHD)
Wuppertal / Germany is a city in North Rhine-Westphalia in western Germany. Located in and around the Wupper valley (German: "Tal"), Wuppertal is known for its "Schwebebahn". This unusual train construction is a suspension monorail dating from 1901. At the time of recording the Schwebebahn only ran once a week on public holidays, the tracks are still visible all around the city center.
We start our walking tour of Wuppertal at the train station which is located at the southern city center. We walk via the new train station square northwards, crossing the Wupper river towards the city center with many shops. After a few minutes we are already at the Karlsplatz with the town hall (Rathaus).
From there we see some side street, the Rathaus Galerie shopping mall and much more of the city cen...

Alors merci
Oui merci de m'avoir choisi
Merci d'avoir cru tellement en moi
Aujourd'hui je suis devenu ce que je voulais
Oui ce que je voulais...

From there we see some side street, the Rathaus Galerie shopping mall and much more of the city center.
We get to the northern part of the center passing the "Haus der Jugend Elberfeld" around half way through our walk with lots of graffiti around there, head back to the inner city on our way east.
Our tour continues towards the district of Ostersbaum, where the botanical garden is located. On that nice day we reach first the St. Marien church. Soon we continue uphill to the Hardt-Anlagen to reach the Botanical Gardens where we end our Wuppertal walking tour.

My German City is KILLING THE CAR (and It's Working)
When we talk about pedestrian friendly, cycling culture in Germany, we often hear “that can’t work” in the USA because of American car culture and suburban sprawl…. But the truth is, Germany was once like that too (and in many ways, still is)... but could my green city in Germany show then a path forward without cars?

Does Germany Do Trucking The Best?
Thanks for watching and don’t forget to check out my video on Midtown Madness 3:
https://youtu.be/R4khQrZNOzA
Also, I decided not to include the brand Renault in this video as I was unable to find any footage of one with a German license plate on the internet. These trucks ARE present in Germany but appear so infrequently that I decided to omit them from the truck lineup. Same could be said for Iveco but I found a grainy video so I shoved them in.

For a while, Germany experienced the longest period of uninterrupted growth. The German economy thrived on high-quality manufacturing and export-oriented policies, establishing itself as a manufacturing powerhouse. Notably, exports accounted for 47% of the country's GDP, a significantly higher proportion compared to large economies like the US, China, India, and the UK. In 2015, Germany's trade surplus amounted to approximately $255 billion, equating to nearly 7.5 percent of its GDP.
However, the German economy has since slowed down a...

Hey everyone, welcome back to my channel! Today I’m talking about the dark sides of living in Germany. There are plenty of great things about living there, but like every country, it has its drawbacks as well. We’ll take a look at some of these potential issues, and you can decide if they'd make life difficult for you or your family. So, stay tuned to find out more on this intriguing topic!
1. Bad Internet Connection
Germany’s internet connection is known around the world as one of the slowest and most unreliable in Europe! And let me tell you, it can be quite frustrating when your Netflix stream keeps buffering, or your Zoom call suddenly gets disconnected. It almost makes you yearn for those simpler times before the digital age! It is one of those negative side of living in Germany that you only get to know if you stay there for longer.
But why are we stuck with this less than optimal service? Well unfortunately it boils down to two things—lack of infrastructure investment and antiquated telecommunication regulations.
Essentially providers don't want to splurge too much on new technology since they already have an existing system in place, which means you end up getting what feels like subpar performance.
On top of that lawmakers here tend not to adhere strictly enough to competition rules which stifles any potential improvements from rival companies entering the market.
2. Staff at the Ausländerbehörde (German Immigration) are so rude
If you've ever had the misfortune of dealing with German immigration, then you'll know that it's not always a pleasant experience. The staff at the Ausländerbehörde are notoriously rude and unhelpful, making it one of the negative sides of living in Germany.
It may seem like this rudeness is intentional, but upon closer inspection, it seems to be more rooted in cultural differences. Germans tend to be much more formal than other countries when interacting with people whom they don't know very well. This often leads to misunderstandings between immigrants and those assisting them at the Ausländerbehörde - an awkward situation for all involved!
There have been several attempts by government officials and public figures alike to improve communication between immigrants and their counterparts at the Ausländerbehörde. While some progress has been made as far as etiquette goes, there is still a great deal of room for improvement on both sides - something which many visitors find disappointing each time they visit Germany's immigration office.
3. Difficulty in making friends
As one of the most populated countries in Europe, it may surprise you to hear that many foreigners struggle with making friends here!
For starters: directness isn’t a joke in Germany – people are incredibly blunt which can make social interactions feel uncomfortable for those coming from more indirect cultures. It is one of those dark side of living in Germany that nobody wants to discuss.
Making matters worse is the rather reserved behaviour of your average German person – privacy and personal space are held at very high regard over here. Not only will you find yourself keeping conversations surface-level, but chances are shocking news or gossip won’t do too well either!

When we talk about pedestrian friendly, cycling culture in Germany, we often hear “that can’t work” in the USA because of American car culture and suburban sprawl…. But the truth is, Germany was once like that too (and in many ways, still is)... but could my green city in Germany show then a path forward without cars?

However, the German economy has since slowed down and now lags behind the US and most of Europe, with its growth rate continually decreasing. While it is easy to blame Germany's economic problems solely on the energy crisis caused by the war in Ukraine , the truth is that the country already possessed significant weaknesses before the crisis. The invasion of Ukraine has exposed Germany's dependence on cheap Russian energy, exacerbating its longstanding economic challenges.
So, what exactly happened to the German economy?

1949 - One year, two Germanies | DW Documentary
1949 was a special year in German history as two separate states were founded almost in parallel. The division into East and West Germany reflected the division of the world into two during the Cold War. The East-West conflict was to last over 40 years.
From today's point of view, what happened back then seems logical. Today we also know that the German-German divide lasted a long time, but it was not irreversible. And it seems almost inevitable that the democratic values of the West German constitution 1949 would prevail as the basis of society - including in the reunified Germany. But the Germans in 1949 couldn't even have guessed at all this. They were experiencing an unprecedented historical experiment in both East and West. 1949 was a special year in German history as two separate states were founded almost in parallel. The division into East and West Germany reflected the division of the world into two during the Cold War. The East-West conflict was to last over 40 years.

But the Germans in 1949 couldn't even have guessed at all this. They were experiencing an unprecedented historical experiment in both East and West. It was a radically new situation: What if they made fundamental mistakes in the founding of their states? What if they were unable to overcome the curse of fascism? The documentary not only reconstructs the major events surrounding the founding of the two states in 1949, but also attitudes to life at the time. We meet contemporary witnesses from both countries who talk about embarking on a political and social journey, the course and destination of which were still quite open at that time.
