Geese at Gray Lodge - Pacific Flyway - 100000 Birds
Geese at Gray Lodge - Pacific Flyway. November 2012. A great day trip in the Sacramento Valley. The sounds of the geese are reminiscent of a large crowd of people. Gray Lodge is a wetland habitat operated by the California Department of Fish and Game and is host to over a million birds on the Pacific Flyway migration. The best viewing season is October to February. Hunting is also managed in this area by Fish and Game in the wildlife area, but the sanctuary in the video is off limits to hunters. The birds seem aware of this congregating heavily in the sanctuary--until the food runs out or its time to get the flock out of here. Happy Viewing

The Great Migration - KQED QUEST
For thousands of years and countless generations, migratory birds have flown the same long-distance paths between their breeding and feeding grounds. Understanding the routes these birds take, called flyways, helps conservation efforts and gives scientists better knowledge of global changes, both natural and man-made. QUEST heads out to the Pacific Flyway with California biologists to track the rhythm of migration.

NBG Eagle Festival Jim Martin part1
This is part 1 of 4 of Jim Martin's presentation "Leadership in the Hurricane of Change" during the 2012 Eagle Symposium at the Norfolk Botanical Garden. He talks about how conservation is changing in this country due to a clash of values. He remembers when, as a kid, he'd see the annual migration of waterfowl through the Pacific Flyway in Klamath Falls, Oregon. This migration gave rise to an annual Eagle Festival in Klamath Falls that draws a huge crowd which helps their economy. This economic tie-in to conservation is reflective of a transformation regarding conservation issues. The Symposium was held May 4-6, 2012. This is what I took away as recommended reading for supporters of wildlife and conservation from Jim's presentation. I haven't read either book. Yet...: - The Big Burn: Teddy Roosevelt and the Fire that Saved America by Timothy Egan - A Sand County Almanac by Aldo Leopold Other symposium presentations include: - Eagles of the Chesapeake: An ecological portrait by Dr Bryan Watts - The History and Update of the Norfolk Botanical Garden Nesting Eagles by Reese Lukei - Tracking the Bald Eagle: Lessons on Foraging, Roosting, and Nesting Through Satellite Telemetry by Libby Mojica - Emerging Eagle Policies by Ed Clark - A Moderated Panel Discussion with Reese Lukei, Jim Martin and Ed Clark - The Bald Eagle Buddy made his debut appearance with Ed Clark and his trainer Darcie Huntress These presentations were all recorded and will be posted.

Lot 48 event
Lot 48 is part of a natural expanse that supports many iconic Rocky Mountain animals and the plant communities on which they depend. The native grasslands on the east side of Columbia Lake represent the largest connected expanse of prime winter range for deer, elk and other grazing animals in the Upper Columbia Valley, as well as one of the best winter ranges for bighorn sheep in British Columbia. Once secured, Lot 48 became part of a network of conservation lands that spans more than 18500 acres (7600 hectares). Now, the entire east shore of Columbia Lake can continue to serve as a critical north-south and east-west wildlife corridor as well as providing first-class habitat for several rare and endangered species. Lot 48 is located in the Pacific Flyway, near the headwaters of the Columbia River and the Columbia Wetlands Wildlife Management Area.

Duck Pond Park
After a winter storm that brought 6.75 inches of rain to Van Nuys, standing water in the local park brought Mallard ducks to feed in small ponds of standing water. The four Mallard drakes in this video submerge their beaks in the shallow water and sift worms and other food from the pond's muddy bottom. Van Nuys, like all of Los Angeles county, lies on a Southern portion of the Pacific flyway. It's a place where many varieties of migratory waterfowl take refuge in cold winter months, while winter rages in far northern climates. Contrary to popular gender feminist stereotypes, male members of many species routinely gather peaceably for camaraderie, and work.

Shorebirds at Pacific Rim National Park Reserve
Pacific Rim National Park Reserve on Vancouver Island, BC, is a crucial refuelling stop for migrating shorebirds along the Pacific Flyway migration route. Keeping your dogs on-leash prevents the birds from being scared away from vital feeding and resting times, disturbances which could lead to them being too weak to reproduce once they reach their summer destination. For more about Pacific Rim National Park Reserve, visit www.parkscanada.gc.ca
