Khon Kaen ขอนแก่น, is one of the four major cities of Isaan, Thailand. Khon Kaen is a regional center for education, financial institutions, government offices and transportation. Khon Kaen province is the second-largest of the north-eastern provinces of Thailand.
The city is bisected by Mithraphap Road, also known as "Friendship Highway", or "Highway 2", the road linking Bangkok to the Thai-Lao Friendship Bridge.
Khon Kaen's winters are dry and very warm. Temperatures rise until April—a very hot month, with an average daily maximum of 36.4 °C (97.5 °F). The rainy season runs from May until October, with heavy rains and somewhat cooler temperatures during the day.
So let’s take a look at whether it is a good place for a RIPper (Retiree In Paradise) to live out their life. Can a RIPper on a Cat. 1 budget have a good life in Khon Kaen? Let’s check it out and see.

Eating Thai Food: Thai Isaan (North-Eastern) Food (Pt 2). Som Tum Yok Krok Thai Restaurant, Phang Nga Thailand
Eating Isaan Food in Thailand. Eating Thai Food at a Thai Restaurant in Phang Nga Thailand. This is a Thai restaurant which is very popular with the locals, selling food from the area known as Isaan in the the north-east of Thailand. Isaan food is very popular throughout Thailand. It’s one of my favourite types of authentic Thai foods and I believe you’ll find some of the best Thai dishes at a Thai restaurant like this. My wife and I got a huge spread of food as seen in the video. The restaurant’s name is Som Tum Yok Krok and you can find it on the outskirts of Phang Nga, on the main road between Phuket and Krabi. It’s about 500m north of Daairy Hut Farm. The cost of the meal in this video was about $16.30 US, including drinks. You’ll find Isaan restaurants all over Thailand, even though the food is originally from the north-east. It’s some of the most delicious Thai cuisine you’ll find when you travel in Thailand.
Check out my channel for more Thai food, Thai recipes, and loads of other Thailand videos. I upload one or more new Thailand video every Wednesday, and often on other days too! You’ll find authentic Thai food recipes, videos about Thai street food, eating Thai food, Thai restaurants, Thailand travel and Thai hotels and resorts.
Subscribe for new videos on what to do in Thailand and beautiful locations such as Krabi and Phuket. New Thailand videos posted every Wednesday about places to see, things to do, food in Thailand, Thai recipes, weird foods, eating bugs, insects and other bizarre foods, Thailand markets, Thai festivals & culture, Thai street food, testing Thai snacks, hotels, resorts, villas, Thai restaurants, Thailand holidays, accommodation, tourism & tours and Thailand travel. For some of the best food and restaurants in the world visit Thailand … it’s awesome!
Krabi is about 2-3 hours from Phuket by land or sea, and has world class accommodation standards comparable to what you find in Phuket hotels and resorts, but in a more relaxed environment.
If you're looking into Thailand Hotels have a look at hotels and resorts in Krabi. The islands and beaches of Krabi are famous for Thailand holidays, the movie The Beach was filmed on Krabi's Koh Phi Phi Island.

Check out our exclusive member site: http://goo.gl/M0nMT5 Well for all the fans sick of seeing me at the beaches and want to see me head back to the North of Thailand you will have to wait!! Because this time I am headed to a region I have never visited, Isaan. Let's head off to a small town called Nong Khai. What does it cost and what is it like to live in Nong Khai? Can a category 1 RIPper (Retiree In Paradise) live well and be happy there? Let's find out about transportation, costs of some food, getting your laundry done and some lodging options in Nong Khai.
So put on your traveling shoes and let's jump in the RIPper mobile and let's see what Nong Khai has to offer!
Isaan is bordered by Laos and Cambodia on three sides. This scorching-hot area of northeast Thailand is known as Isaan. It comprises a third of the country's land area and is home to nearly a third of its population. This is the poorest region of the kingdom of Thailand, and it is also the least-visited. Farming is the traditional way of life in Isaan
At the eastern end of this upper part of Thailand, is the border town of Nong Khai which is surrounded by wonderfully ornate temples, some of which are used by the large population of Vietnamese and Chinese migrants.
Nong Khai is a bustling Thai town and the main gateway to Laos and Vientiane positioned along the Mekong River.
Nong Khai exhibits the well known Isaan Culture which is very different from the culture of the central, northern and southern regions of Thailand. Isaan is known for its warmth, friendliness and kindness. The Isaan dialect has been drawn from both Thai and Lao roots. These days the distinctive Isaan culture has tremendous pride to those who are born into this region. Most indigenous people here speak both Thai and the local dialect called Isaan.

Please become a friend or subscribe to this channel and you if can, link back to my website I'd appreciate it.

Isan (also known as Isaan) is well known throughout Thailand for its delicious food. Perhaps the most famous dish is som tam, or green papaya salad, but there are so many more dishes than just that. Sticky rice is the staple for Isaan food, and it goes so well, dipping bites of sticky rice into sauces and dressing while you’re eating.
The first dish I ate at this restaurant is called oo plia (อุเพลี้ย), and I know the description of the soup might not sound too good, but basically it’s uncleaned intestines from the cows, that are boiled and made into a soup. The soup then included a bunch of different beef pieces, mostly trip, and pieces of actual meat, and a lot of chilies and herbs to complement it. It was quite an interesting soup, the flavor was mostly meaty beefy. However, the more I ate it, and getting to the bottom of the soup, it started getting extremely bitter, almost medicine like. It was pretty intense, and while I did like it, it got harder and harder to eat more towards the bottom of the bowl.
Next up I had tom pla neen (ต้มปลานิล), a boiled tilapia fish in an outstanding soup made from lots and lots of herbs like lemongrass, galangal, shallots, and plenty of dry chilies. The fish was then topped in a huge handful of fresh green onions and cilantro to give the soup an amazing flavor. Probably my favorite Isan food of our meal at Somchai Pochana (สมชัยโภชนา) was this dish.
We also ordered an Isan dish called koy neua suk (ก้อยเนื้อสุก), which is similar to the more common lab (or larb), which is a Thai meat salad. You can order it raw, but we got ours cooked. It was mostly a combination of beef, cooked, and seasoned with lime juice, fish sauce, and chilies. It was fantastic.
Somchai Pochana (สมชัยโภชนา) is just a very local Isan food restaurant in the countryside of Isan, but they serve some delicious food.

Travel Channel's Andrew Zimmern Gives Viewes A Tasty Look At Foods That Define Global Locations On N

Curious culinarian and James Beard Award–winning chef Andrew Zimmern continues his search for the most interesting dishes across the globe in the new original series “Bizarre Foods: Delicious Destinations,” premiering with back–to–back episodes on Monday, January 26 at 9:00 p.m & 9:30 p.m. ET/PT. The 13–episode series, an extension of the popular “Bizarre Foods” franchise, takes viewers on an international journey to iconic cities around the world for a taste of their quintessential, not–to–be missed dishes. From melt in your mouth chocolate in Zurich to decadent gelato in Florence, savory paella in Barcelona to creamy clam chowder in Boston, the half–hour weekly series is an exploration of iconic foods, where they came from, how they are made, and the right way to eat them.
Zimmern puts it this way, “For years now I have wanted to make a show that tells the world in simple, easily digested terms what the classic 5 or 6 foods are in the world’s great cities. If you go to Paris or Tokyo, these would be the must–eat dishes that you have to try before leaving and perhaps more importantly, why. The food literacy in America is rising. The history and sociology lessons standing behind these foods are entertaining and help bridge the culture gaps.”
The premiere episode of “Bizarre Foods: Delicious Destinations,” airing at 9:00 p.m. ET/PT, explores the ancient city of Athens, Greece and some of its most recognizable food, beginning with gyros and souvlaki. Along with a third generation restaurant owner, Zimmern guides viewers through the unique preparation of classic dishes, and reveals how the Greek have perfected these timeless recipes. Next, Zimmern stops at Krinos bakery for deliciously deep–fried Greek doughnuts called loukamades, followed by a look at the story behind spanakopita — a multi–cultural mash–up of flakey dough with spinach and feta filling. The art of making spanakopita is such a highly–regarded skill in Athens that a professional guild exists for the chefs who have perfected it! Zimmern goes on to find koulouri, a Greek culinary necessity similar to a bagel; dolmades, delicately stuffed grape leaves; and of course, Greek yogurt, which is anything but what viewers see on grocery store shelves here in America.
In the second episode, airing at 9:30 p.m. ET/PT, Zimmern discovers the delectable delicacies of Paris. At Bistrot Paul Bert in the trendy 11th Arrondissement neighborhood, the restaurant serves up the most indulgent steak frites. Croque–monsieur, the simple Parisian ham and cheese sandwich, becomes a crunchy, melty masterpiece at Café La Palette — rumored to be a favorite spot of Picasso and Hemingway. Zimmern showcases other French finds including authentic artisan baguettes from Moulin de la Vierge, the finest buttery croissants at Gerard Mulot’s pastry shop, the best light wafer macarons with flavorful fillings by pâtissier Arnaud Larher, and the traditional sweet and savory crepes at Ti Jos.
Visiting cities such as London, Munich, Hong Kong, New Orleans and more, Zimmern takes viewers into the kitchens where generations of chefs prepare and serve the cities’ most beloved dishes.
“Bizarre Foods: Delicious Destinations” is produced by Tremendous Entertainment for Travel Channel. Andrew Zimmern is an executive producer. For Tremendous!, the executive producers are Colleen Needles Steward, Shannon Keenan Demers, Kristin Graham and David Barsky. For Travel Channel, the executive producer is David E. Gerber.

Ban Ta Klang is home to the Kui (aka Suai) people, Thailand's legendary elephant handlers, and about 150 elephants live side-by-side with them at their homes in the village. We'll spend a full day with the elephants, mostly out walking with and watching them in patches of forest and at watering holes, and they are off chains the entire time. We even get to help bathe the elephants in the Mun River. Most people consider engaging with elephants in natural surroundings such as this to be far better than watching them perform circus acts. There will be one elephant per guest, though solo travelers will get two so you can see them interact socially.
Although the elephants are the focus of this tour, we make many other stops before and after your elephant encounter including Khmer ruins, historic temples, craft villages, a forest full of semi-tame monkeys, and a bizarre sculpture park. We also pass through an important silk weaving region and we'll stop to visit a weaving village that raises its own silk worms.

We also have two-day (http://www.isanexplorer.com/elephant-encounter-express.html) and three-day (http://www.isanexplorer.com/elephant-encounter.html) versions of this tour.

Ban Ta Klang is home to the Kui (aka Suai) people, Thailand's legendary elephant handlers, and about 150 elephants live side-by-side with them at their homes in the village. On this shortened version of our regular Elephant Encounter tour (perfect for weekend visits) you'll spend just as much time with the elephants as on the regular tour, but we drive straight to the elephant village with no cultural stops along the way. On the afternoon of day 1 and morning of day 2 of this tour we'll be up close with the elephants, mostly out walking with and watching them in patches of forest and at watering holes, and they are off chains the entire time. We even get to help bathe the elephants in the Mun River. Most people consider engaging with elephants in natural surroundings such as this to be far better than watching them perform circus acts. There will be one elephant per guest, though solo travelers will get two so you can see them interact socially. Then, on the drive back to Khon Kaen, we'll visit a silk weaving village and two amazing temples with lovely murals – one modern and one historic.

SP Chicken (SP ไก่ย่าง) - Delicious Restaurant in Chiang Mai

SP Chicken (SP ไก่ย่าง) is a nice restaurant that serves Isan food in Chiang Mai, Thailand. Here's the full review: http://www.eatingthaifood.com/2014/06/sp-chicken-chiang-mai/
On our last trip to Chiang Mai, Thailand, along with trying to eat and discover as much khao soi as possible, we headed one day for lunch to a restaurant known as SP Chicken (SP ไก่ย่าง) - they specialize in Thai style grilled chicken, actually more rotisserie style, and the full range of different Thai Isan dishes like som tam and sticky rice. The restaurant is small and family run, and located right in the old section of Chiang Mai, within the gates.
The first thing you notice when you enter SP Chicken (SP ไก่ย่าง) restaurant in Chiang Mai is the beauty of their grilling chicken rotisserie. It's a one of a kind, stand up grill, where to coals are situated on the side, and the chicken are skewered and roast while spinning. There's a man, who full times watching the chicken, and occasionally brushes off any ash that may have blown on the birds - the quality control is fantastic. I could smell the chicken, and as soon as we walked in, I was ready to devour a chicken and some Thai green papaya salad to go with it.
If you go to this restaurant in Chiang Mai, you should immediately order a full chicken gai yang (ไก่ย่าง), they are pretty small. So small in fact, that at the beginning, I actually smiled because the entire chicken could fit on a normal small sized plate. But I shouldn't have judged the chicken that fast, because after taking my first bite, I realized just how packed with flavor the chicken was. I literally ate the entire drumstick in one bite, and it was just incredibly juicy and oily and packed with tastiness. In addition to the expertly cooked chicken, what I really loved about SP Chicken (SP ไก่ย่าง) was their home-made nam jim jaew (น้ำจิ้มแจ่ว), the sauce used for dipping the chicken in.
Along with gai yang, we also ordered a plate of yam dab wan moo (ยำตับหวานหมู), a salad made from liver, dressed in toasted sticky rice, and a blend of fish sauce and lime juice. It was excellent, the liver was nice and tender and I loved the fresh herbs like mint and cilantro. An Isan meal is never complete without an order of green papaya salad. We got som tam boo (ส้มตำปู), green papaya salad with crab. It was excellent, mainly because I loved the good amount of lime juice that they used in it.
If you are ever in Chiang Mai and looking for a delicious plate of grilled chicken, go check out SP Chicken (SP ไก่ย่าง).

Chiang Rai (เมืองเชียงราย) is a city in northern Thailand that I’ve always wanted to visit, and finally I had a chance to go. Keep watching this video for all the details.
From Bangkok, I first bought a plane ticket with Bangkok Airways - it was also my first time to fly with Bangkok Airways, though I had heard good things about them before. Our flight was in the morning so we took a taxi in Bangkok to Suvarnabhumi International Airport to catch our flight. After we checked it, we headed to our gate, and were greeted by a nice little display of snacks and coffee and tea - not bad for just a one hour flight that cost less than $50! After eating some banana chips and a few cheese sandwiches, our flight to Chiang Rai was ready to board. On the flight Bangkok Airways served us even more food. It was a nice flight, and it took just one hour to fly from Bangkok to Chiang Rai.
After landing in Chiang Rai, we got our bag, and then took a taxi into town. Ying and had booked a hotel called Amarin Resort, as I needed a nice place to get some work done, and we were looking for a place to get some nice relaxation as well. I immediately loved the resort we were staying at - it was nice and extremely quiet, the grounds were nice and green, and our room was quite big in size and very comfortable. After checking into our hotel and relaxing for a bit, we then headed out to eat lunch at a famous northern Thai restaurant, which was actually located just a 5 minute walk from our hotel, known as Lu Lam. We ordered a number of different Thai dishes, including one of my favorite northern Thai foods, lab khua, minced pork with lots of spices. The entire meal was quite wonderful, and it was a delicious first meal in Chiang Rai. I also loved that the restaurant was located right along the river, offering a lovely and peaceful atmosphere.
During the summer, the sun in Chiang Rai is intensely hot, especially in the middle of the day. So after lunch, we decided to head back to the hotel and I needed to get some work done. I wrote some blogs before we headed out again in the afternoon at about 4 pm when the sun was toned down quite a bit. We headed into Chiang Rai town, and our first stop was to walk around the Chiang Rai clock tower, an incredibly intricate and ornate golden clock tower, sort of the landmark of downtown Chiang Rai city. We then continued walking, and soon found ourselves in the evening central market, a vibrant display of all things northern Thai food. I wanted to actually eat everything I saw, but I was actually still quite full from the delicious lunch we had eaten not too long before. I ended up buying some avocados and some passion fruit, two of my favorite natural things.
After walking around the local food market, we then headed over to check out the Chiang Rai night bazaar. It turned out to be a little on the touristy side, not so much my style, but it could be a good place to go if you travel to Chiang Rai and are looking to buy some souvenir. There’s a food court at the Chiang Rai night bazaar, so we stopped there for a quick and light bite to eat. I ordered a dish called jim jum, which is basically the Thai street food version of a hot pot. We got a pot of soup boiling in a clay pot, accompanied by a basket of vegetables, an egg, and some chicken, and then we just boiled everything together. It wasn’t the best meal of my life, it was alright, but I just wanted to eat something for dinner that wasn’t too heavy or meaty - as I had eaten quite a huge lunch!
My first day traveling from Bangkok to Chiang Rai was a wonderful day. I immediately fell in love with Chiang Rai, how peaceful it is, and I really love the northern Thai culture and the food.
Thank you for watching this travel vlog, hope you enjoyed it!
