""Podokesaurus"" was a small carnivorous dinosaur that living during the Pliensbachian–Toarcian stages of the Early Jurassic Period, and as such is one of the earliest known dinosaurs to inhabit the eastern United States.
The generic name "Podokesaurus" is derived from Greek word "podōkēs" meaning "swift-footed", an epitheton often used by Homer in the Iliad to describe the hero Achilles, and "saura" meaning "lizard"; thus "swift-footed lizard". The specific name refers to Holyoke, a city in Massachusetts, in the Connecticut River Valley.
The type specimen suggests that "Podokesaurus" was a small, bipedal carnivore was about 90 cm long and 0.3 m tall. Its upper leg bone measures 86 mm in length, and its lower leg bone measures 104 mm in length. The tibia and other skeletal features of referred specimen BSNH 13656 are nearly three times longer than the type specimen described above. This suggests that "Podokesaurus" grew to about 9 feet in length, provided that BSNH 13656 is in fact an example of this genus.
The only fossil of the type species "Podokesaurus holyokensis", the full species name, was recovered in 1910 by Mount Holyoke College professor of geology and geography, Mignon Talbot. It consisted of a split boulder found by Talbot and her sister Elly on a hillock near to the college. The hillock consists of material deposited by ice and having its probable origin in the Portland Formation in Massachusetts. The slab and counterslab showed a poorly preserved, incomplete skeleton. Most of the skull is lacking. Talbot made pictures of the stones and sought advice from Richard Swann Lull, an authoritative dinosaur expert. It was formally described in June 1911 by Talbot herself, who thereby became the first woman to name a non-avian dinosaur. "Podokesaurus" was originally thought to have lived during the Late Triassic Period, which was later disproved. "Podokesaurus" was discovered in sediments deposited during the Pliensbachian–Toarcian stages of the Early Jurassic Period, between 190 and 174 million years ago.
In 1958 a second specimen, BSNH 13656 , was referred to "P. holyokensis" by Edwin Harris Colbert and Donald Baird. It consists of natural casts in sandstone of a pubis, tibia, three ribs, and a possible vertebra, probably collected in Middletown, Connecticut. The bone casts are from an individual about three times longer than the type specimen. The type, therefore, might have been a juvenile.

""Scelidosaurus"" is a genus of herbivorous armoured ornithischian dinosaur from the Jurassic of England.
"Scelidosaurus" lived during the Early Jurassic Period, during the Sinemurian to Pliensbachian stages around 191 million years ago. This genus and related genera at the time lived on the supercontinent Laurasia. Its fossils have been found near Charmouth in Dorset, England, and are known for their excellent preservation. "Scelidosaurus" has been called the earliest complete dinosaur. It is the most completely known dinosaur of the British Isles. Despite this, a modern description is still lacking. After initial finds in the 1850s, comparative anatomist Richard Owen named and described "Scelidosaurus" in 1859. Only one species, "Scelidosaurus harrisonii" named by Owen in 1861, is considered valid today, although one other species has been proposed in 1996.
"Scelidosaurus" was about 4 m long. It was a largely quadrupedal animal, feeding on low scrubby plants, the parts of which were bitten off by the small, elongated head to be processed in the large gut. "Scelidosaurus" was lightly armoured, protected by long horizontal rows of keeled oval scutes, that stretched along the neck, back and tail.
One of the oldest known and most "primitive" of the thyreophorans, the exact placement of "Scelidosaurus" within this group has been the subject of debate for nearly 150 years. This was not helped by the limited additional knowledge about the early evolution of armoured dinosaurs. Today most evidence indicates that "Scelidosaurus" is a basal member of the Thyreophora, lower placed in the evolutionary tree of life than the Ankylosauridae or the Stegosauridae.

""Anchisaurus"" is a genus of basal sauropodomorph. An early herbivorous dinosaur, lived during the Early Jurassic Period; more specifically, the Pliensbachian to Toarcian ages, 190 to 174 million years ago. Until recently it was classed as a member of Prosauropoda. The name comes from the Greek "αγχι"/"agkhi" anchi-; "near, close" + Greek "σαυρος"/"sauros"; "lizard", probably referring to Marsh's interpretation of it as intermediate between primitive dinosaurs and more derived dinosaurs. "Anchisaurus" was coined as a replacement name for "Amphisaurus", which was itself a replacement name for Hitchcock's "Megadactylus", both of which had already been used for other animals.
Hitchcock collected these bones under the name "Megadactylus" in 1865. However, the name was already in use, and paleontologist Othniel Charles Marsh renamed it "Anchisaurus" in 1885. Remains thought to belong to this genus were found in South Africa and China, adding to the theory that these land masses were at the time joined in one super-continent, Pangaea, but these assignments have been contentious . A recovery from Nova Scotia may also be an "Anchisaurus" but this is unconfirmed.
"Anchisaurus" was a rather small dinosaur, with a length of just over 2 m, which helps explain why it was once mistaken for human bones. It probably weighed around 27 kg. However, Marsh's species "A. major" was larger, from 2.5 to and some estimates give it a weight of up to 70 lb.
Digesting plant matter is a much more intensive biochemical process than digesting meat. This herbivore swallowed gastroliths to help break down the food in its stomach. Herbivorous dinosaurs needed a huge gut. Since this had to be positioned in front of the pelvis, balancing on two legs became increasingly difficult, as dinosaurs became larger and they gradually evolved into the quadrupedal position that characterizes the later sauropods such as "Diplodocus". Prosauropods represented a middle phase between the earliest bipedal herbivores and the later giant sauropods. Although it was not itself a prosauropod, "Anchisaurus" was mostly typical of this group, which flourished briefly during the late Triassic and early Jurassic. "Anchisaurus" teeth, used to rip food, were shaped like spoons. It had fewer and more widely spaced teeth than true prosauropods, and as Peter Galton and Michael Cluver observed, narrower feet. "Anchisaurus" would have spent most of its time on four legs but could have reared up on its hind legs to reach higher plants.

Cryolophosaurus (pronounced /ˌkraɪ.ɵˌlɒfɵˈsɔːrəs/ or /kraɪˌɒlɵfəˈsɔːrəs/, meaning "cold crest lizard") was a large theropod dinosaur, with a bizarre crest on its head that looked like a Spanish comb. Cryolophosaurus was excavated from Antarctica's Early Jurassic (Pliensbachian stage) Hanson Formation (former the upper Falla Formation) by paleontologist Dr. William Hammer in 1991. It is the first carnivorous dinosaur to be discovered in Antarctica and the first dinosaur of any kind from the continent to be officially named. Dating from the Early Jurassic Period, it was originally described as the earliest known tetanuran, though subsequent studies have found that it is probably more closely related to the dilophosaurs.

""Cryolophosaurus"" is a genus of large theropods known from only a single species ""Cryolophosaurus ellioti"", known from the early Jurassic period of Antarctica. It was about 6.5 m long and 465 kg in weight, making it one of the largest theropods of its time. Individuals of this species may have grown even larger, because the only known specimen probably represents a sub-adult. "Cryolophosaurus" is known from a skull, a femur and other material, the skull and femur of which have caused its classification to vary greatly. The femur possesses many primitive characteristics that have classified "Cryolophosaurus" as a dilophosaurid or a neotheropod outside of Dilophosauridae and Averostra, where as the skull has many advanced features, leading the genus to be considered a tetanuran, an abelisaurid, a ceratosaur and even an allosaurid. Since its original description, the consensus is that "Cryolophosaurus" is either a primitive member of the Tetanurae or a close relative of that group.
"Cryolophosaurus" possessed a distinctive crest on its head that spanned the head from side to side, similar to a Spanish comb. Based on evidence from related species and studies of bone texture, it is thought that this bizarre crest was used for intra-species recognition. The brain of "Cryolophosaurus" was also more primitive than those of other theropods.
"Cryolophosaurus" was first excavated from Antarctica's Early Jurassic, Sinemurian to Pliensbachian aged Hanson Formation, formerly the upper Falla Formation, by paleontologist Dr. William Hammer in 1991. Pliensbachian
The Pliensbachian is an age of the geologic timescale or stage in the stratigraphic column. It is part of the Early or Lower Jurassic epoch or series and spans the time between 190.8 ± 1.5 Ma and 182.7 ± 1.5 Ma (million years ago). The Pliensbachian is preceded by the Sinemurian and followed by the Toarcian.
The Pliensbachian ended with the extinction event called the Toarcian turnover. During the Pliensbachian, the middle part of the Lias was deposited in Europe. The Pliensbachian is roughly coeval with the Charmouthian regional stage of North America.
Stratigraphic definitions
The Pliensbachian takes its name from the hamlet of Pliensbach in the community of Zell unter Aichelberg in the Swabian Alb, some 30 km east of Stuttgart in Germany. The name was introduced into scientific literature by German palaeontologist Albert Oppel in 1858.
The base of the Pliensbachian is at the first appearances of the ammonite species Bifericeras donovani and genera Apoderoceras and Gleviceras. The Wine Haven profile near Robin Hood's Bay (Yorkshire, England) has been appointed as global reference profile for the base (GSSP).

The femur possesses many primitive characteristics that have classified "Cryolophosaurus" as a dilophosaurid or a neotheropod outside of Dilophosauridae and Averostra, where as the skull has many advanced features, leading the genus to be considered a tetanuran, an abelisaurid, a ceratosaur and even an allosaurid. Since its original description, the consensus is that "Cryolophosaurus" is either a primitive member of the Tetanurae or a close relative of that group. "Cryolophosaurus" possessed a distinctive crest on its head that spanned the head from side to side, similar to a Spanish comb. Based on evidence from related species and studies of bone texture, it is thought that this bizarre crest was used for intra-species recognition. The type specimen suggests that "Podokesaurus" was a small, bipedal carnivore was about 90 cm long and 0.3 m tall. Its upper leg bone measures 86 mm in length, and its lower leg bone measures 104 mm in length. The tibia and other skeletal features of referred specimen BSNH 13656 are nearly three times longer than the type specimen described above. This suggests that "Podokesaurus" grew to about 9 feet in length, provided that BSNH 13656 is in fact an example of this genus.
The only fossil of the type species "Podokesaurus holyokensis", the full species name, was recovered in 1910 by Mount Holyoke College professor of geology and geography, Mignon Talbot. It consisted of a split boulder found by Talbot and her sister Elly on a hillock near to the college. The hillock consists of material deposited by ice and having its probable origin in the Portland Formation in Massachusetts. The slab and counterslab showed a poorly preserved, incomplete skeleton. Most of the skull is lacking. Talbot made pictures of the stones and sought advice from Richard Swann Lull, an authoritative dinosaur expert. It was formally described in June 1911 by Talbot herself, who thereby became the first woman to name a non-avian dinosaur. "Podokesaurus" was originally thought to have lived during the Late Triassic Period, which was later disproved. "Podokesaurus" was discovered in sediments deposited during the Pliensbachian–Toarcian stages of the Early Jurassic Period, between 190 and 174 million years ago.
In 1958 a second specimen, BSNH 13656 , was referred to "P. holyokensis" by Edwin Harris Colbert and Donald Baird. It consists of natural casts in sandstone of a pubis, tibia, three ribs, and a possible vertebra, probably collected in Middletown, Connecticut. The bone casts are from an individual about three times longer than the type specimen. The type, therefore, might have been a juvenile.

"Scelidosaurus" was about 4 m long. It was a largely quadrupedal animal, feeding on low scrubby plants, the parts of which were bitten off by the small, elongated head to be processed in the large gut. "Scelidosaurus" was lightly armoured, protected by long horizontal rows of keeled oval scutes, that stretched along the neck, back and tail.
One of the oldest known and most "primitive" of the thyreophorans, the exact placement of "Scelidosaurus" within this group has been the subject of debate for nearly 150 years. This was not helped by the limited additional knowledge about the early evolution of armoured dinosaurs. Today most evidence indicates that "Scelidosaurus" is a basal member of the Thyreophora, lower placed in the evolutionary tree of life than the Ankylosauridae or the Stegosauridae.

""Scelidosaurus"" is a genus of herbivorous armoured ornithischian dinosaur from the Jurassic of England.
"Scelidosaurus" lived during the Early Jurassic Period, during the Sinemurian to Pliensbachian stages around 191 million years ago. This genus and related genera at the time lived on the supercontinent Laurasia. Its fossils have been found near Charmouth in Dorset, England, and are known for their excellent preservation. "Scelidosaurus" has been called the earliest complete dinosaur. It is the most completely known dinosaur of the British Isles. Despite this, a modern description is still lacking. After initial finds in the 1850s, comparative anatomist Richard Owen named and described "Scelidosaurus" in 1859. Only one species, "Scelidosaurus harrisonii" named by Owen in 1861, is considered valid today, although one other species has been proposed in 1996.
"Scelidosaurus" was about 4 m long. It was a largely quadrupedal animal, feeding on low scrubby plants, the parts of which were bitten off by the small, elongated head to be processed in the large gut. "Scelidosaurus" was lightly armoured, protected by long horizontal rows of keeled oval scutes, that stretched along the neck, back and tail.
One of the oldest known and most "primitive" of the thyreophorans, the exact placement of "Scelidosaurus" within this group has been the subject of debate for nearly 150 years. This was not helped by the limited additional knowledge about the early evolution of armoured dinosaurs. Today most evidence indicates that "Scelidosaurus" is a basal member of the Thyreophora, lower placed in the evolutionary tree of life than the Ankylosauridae or the Stegosauridae.

An early herbivorous dinosaur, lived during the Early Jurassic Period; more specifically, the Pliensbachian to Toarcian ages, 190 to 174 million years ago. Until recently it was classed as a member of Prosauropoda. The name comes from the Greek "αγχι"/"agkhi" anchi-; "near, close" + Greek "σαυρος"/"sauros"; "lizard", probably referring to Marsh's interpretation of it as intermediate between primitive dinosaurs and more derived dinosaurs. "Anchisaurus" was coined as a replacement name for "Amphisaurus", which was itself a replacement name for Hitchcock's "Megadactylus", both of which had already been used for other animals.
Hitchcock collected these bones under the name "Megadactylus" in 1865. However, the name was already in use, and paleontologist Othniel Charles Marsh renamed it "Anchisaurus" in 1885. Remains thought to belong to this genus were found in South Africa and China, adding to the theory that these land masses were at the time joined in one super-continent, Pangaea, but these assignments have been contentious . A recovery from Nova Scotia may also be an "Anchisaurus" but this is unconfirmed.
"Anchisaurus" was a rather small dinosaur, with a length of just over 2 m, which helps explain why it was once mistaken for human bones. It probably weighed around 27 kg. However, Marsh's species "A. major" was larger, from 2.5 to and some estimates give it a weight of up to 70 lb.
Digesting plant matter is a much more intensive biochemical process than digesting meat. This herbivore swallowed gastroliths to help break down the food in its stomach. Herbivorous dinosaurs needed a huge gut. Since this had to be positioned in front of the pelvis, balancing on two legs became increasingly difficult, as dinosaurs became larger and they gradually evolved into the quadrupedal position that characterizes the later sauropods such as "Diplodocus". Prosauropods represented a middle phase between the earliest bipedal herbivores and the later giant sauropods. Although it was not itself a prosauropod, "Anchisaurus" was mostly typical of this group, which flourished briefly during the late Triassic and early Jurassic. "Anchisaurus" teeth, used to rip food, were shaped like spoons. It had fewer and more widely spaced teeth than true prosauropods, and as Peter Galton and Michael Cluver observed, narrower feet. "Anchisaurus" would have spent most of its time on four legs but could have reared up on its hind legs to reach higher plants.

Cryolophosaurus (/ˌkraɪ.ɵˌlɒfɵˈsɔrəs/ or /kraɪˌɒlɵfəˈsɔrəs/; "CRY-oh-loaf-oh-SAWR-us") was a large theropod dinosaur, with a crest on its head that looked like a Spanish comb. Due to the resemblance of this feature to Elvis Presley's pompadour haircut from the 1950s, this dinosaur was at one point informally known as "Elvisaurus".
Cryolophosaurus was excavated from Antarctica's Early Jurassic (Pliensbachian stage) Hanson Formation (formerly the upper Falla Formation) by paleontologist Dr. William Hammer in 1991. It is the first carnivorous dinosaur to be discovered in Antarctica and the first non-avian dinosaur from the continent to be officially named.
