One a geology field trip, Bruce L. Stinchcombexplains the occurrence of a large Ordovician age fossil in a cut on I-55 south of St. Louis, Mo. These cephalopods were some of the largest animals for their time. They form part of GOBE (the great Ordovician diversification event.
This London Lecture was delivered by Professor Euan Clarkson of the University of Edinburgh on 10 March 2015. Description: During the Cambrian the large continent of Baltica (including modern Scandinavia) lay isolated in the southern hemisphere. The Lower Cambrian of Baltica consists mainly of sandstones, but in the Middle and Upper Cambrian (Furongian) a muddy sequence known as the Alum Shales were deposited. Whereas the Middle Cambrian carries a rich and diverse trilobite fauna, oxygen levels dramatically decreased thereafter, and the uppermost Middle Cambrian bears a fauna consisting only of a single species of agnostoid, Agnostus pisiformis. In the following Furongian, the faunas were dominated by the olenid trilobites, adapted to dysoxic conditions. The Furongian of southern Swed...

Charles Sternbach of Star Creek Energy talks about light oil exploration opportunities in the Gaspe Peninsula, Quebec, Canada. There are exploration drilling prospects on Mundiregina Resource acreage in Gaspe, southwest of Galt Field. Targets include Devonian, Silurian and Ordovician-age rocks in the subsurface.
The giant squid (genus: Architeuthis) is a deep-ocean dwelling squid in the family Architeuthidae, represented by as many as eight species. Giant squid can grow to a tremendous size (see Deep-sea gigantism): recent estimates put the maximum size at 13 m (43 ft) for females and 10 m (33 ft) for males from the posterior fins to the tip of the two long tentacles (second only to the colossal squid at an estimated 14 m (46 ft), one of the largest living organisms). The mantle is about 2 m (6.6 ft) long (more for females, less for males), and the length of the squid excluding its tentacles is about 5 m (16 ft). Claims of specimens measuring 20 m (66 ft) or more have not been scientifically documented. On 30 September 2004, researchers from the National Science Museum of Japan and the Ogasawara ...
Valentina Aquila from the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, MD speaks to SoMAS on Wednesday, November 13, 2013. Topic: "Response of Ozone and Nitrogen Dioxide to Mt. Pinatubo Eruption" ABSTRACT On 15 June 1991 the eruption of Mount Pinatubo in the Philippines produced about 25 Tg of sulfur aerosol, increasing aerosol burdens in the lower stratosphere by up to two orders of magnitude. The aerosols from the eruption were transported throughout the stratosphere, and reactions on their surfaces altered stratospheric composition at middle latitudes. Observations revealed the expected depletion of nitrogen dioxide and global ozone. However, while the depletion of nitrogen dioxide took place in both hemispheres, the depletion of ozone happened mainly in the northern hemisphere. ...
On December 1, 2011, the Kentucky Geological Survey at the University of Kentucky celebrated a major achievement in the mapping of Kentucky's geology. KGS has published all 25 maps in the 30 by 60 minute geologic map series (1:100,000 scale), making them available for free to the public on their website and through a new app. This achievement is unparalleled by any other state, making Kentucky a leader in geologic mapping and map technology. For more information on the maps, please visit: http://www.uky.edu/KGS/mapping/100k.htm. Produced by Research Communications at the University of Kentucky.
The first 20minutes of the making of the making of the non-existent film Pelaw land of the Electricity Sucking robotic Trilobites starring him off-of ironing update, her off-of can the dinosaur see up my skirt? and optimus prime. Featuring a stellar soundtrack including Madness, Camera Obscura, The Cactus Channel and Pavement. Small cameo by the three chaffinches.
A film featuring the Silurian hydrocarbon source rock of North Africa and Arabia. The main characteristics of this unit, ecological controlling mechanisms and a predictive depositional model are presented based on animated graphics and video footage from the Ghat outcrop belt in Southwest Libya. Don't miss this film if you are interested in Libyan petroleum geology, black shale ecology or shale gas exploration. More information: www.seven-continents.com
