Metonic Cycle:
Ancient mathematicians realized that if they wanted to keep the solar and lunar dates in line, the shortest possible cycle would take 19 years.
How many leap years would we have in this 19-year-cycle?
• 19 solar years are approximately 6939.75 days (= 19 years x 365.25 days)
• 19 years made of 12 lunar months are approximately 6732.84 days (= 19 years x 12 months x 29.53 days)
• Missing (leap) days: 19 "solar years" - 19 "years made of 12 lunar months" =
6939.75 days - 6732.84 days = 206.91 days.
So, after a period of 19 years, the lunair calendar is missing 207 days. (Which means that we must add 207 days thoughout the 19 years, in order to place the months back within their respective seasons).
How will we add these 207 days without messing up the cycle of moon phases and the seasonal cycle? The best way to do this is by adding these missing days in the form of leap months.
• Converting days to months: (206.91 days)/29.53 days = 7.007 months
So, approximately 7 leap months must be added to compensate for the missing days. This means that during a period of 19 years, 7 will be leap years (containing 13 months each) and 12 will be regular years (containing 12 months each).

Many people believe that the Islamic Calendar is lunar. Yet, upon closer examination of the meanings of the Islamic months, it becomes clear that most of them define distinct seasonal events. Why is it the case, when the calendar is supposed to be lunar (and thus cannot keep track of seasons)?
Is it possible that the Islamic Calendar is a solar one? Well, this is unlikely because solar calendars cannot keep track of the moon phases, while Quran 2:189 mentions their importance for time-keeping.
So then, which one is it?

The Islamic calendar, Muslim calendar or Hijri calendar (Anno Hijri or AH)is a lunar calendar consisting of 12 months in a year of 354 or 355 days.
It is used to date events in many Muslim countries (concurrently with the Gregorian calendar), and used by Muslims everywhere to determine the proper days on which to observe the annual fasting, to attend Hajj, and to celebrate other Islamic holidays and festivals.
The first year was the Islamic year beginning in AD 622 during which the emigration of Muhammad from Mecca to Medina, known as the Hijra, occurred. Each numbered year is designated either "H" for Hijra or "AH" for the Latin Anno Hegirae ("in the year of the Hijra"); hence, Muslims typically call their calendar the Hijri calendar.
The current Islamic year is 1437 AH. In the Gregorian calendar, 1437 AH runs from approximately 14 October 2015 to 2 October 2016.
Months
Four of the twelve Hijri months are considered sacred: Rajab (7), and the three consecutive months of Dhū al-Qaʿdah (11), Dhu al-Ḥijjah (12) and Muḥarram (1). Because the lunar calendar lags behind the solar calendar by about ten days every year, months of the Islamic calendar fall in different parts of the Gregorian calendar each year. The cycle repeats every 33 years.

Lunar calendar
A lunar calendar is a calendar that is based on cycles of the lunar phases. This can be contrasted with the Gregorian calendar, which is a solar calendar based on the revolution of the Earth around the sun. Because there are slightly more than twelve lunations (synodic months) in a solar year, the period of 12 lunar months (354.37 days) is sometimes referred to as a lunar year.
A common purely lunar calendar is the Islamic (or Hijri Qamari) calendar. A feature of the Islamic calendar is that a year is always 12 months, so the months are not linked with the seasons and drift each solar year by 11 to 12 days. It comes back to the position it had in relation to the solar year approximately every 33 Islamic years. It is used mainly for religious purposes, but in Saudi Arabia it is the official calendar. Other lunar calendars often include extra months added occasionally to synchronize it with the solar calendar.
The oldest known lunar calendar was found in Scotland at Warren Field and dates back to around 8,000 BC.Alexander Marshack, in a controversial reading, believed that marks on a bone baton (c. 25,000 BCE) represented a lunar calendar. Similarly, Michael Rappenglueck believes that marks on a 17,000-year-old cave painting in Lascaux represent a lunar calendar.

Ancient mathematicians realized that if they wanted to keep the solar and lunar dates in line, the shortest possible cycle would take 19 years.
How many leap years would we have in this 19-year-cycle?
• 19 solar years are approximately 6939.75 days (= 19 years x 365.25 days)
• 19 years made of 12 lunar months are approximately 6732.84 days (= 19 years x 12 months x 29.53 days)
• Missing (leap) days: 19 "solar years" - 19 "years made of 12 lunar months" =
6939.75 days - 6732.84 days = 206.91 days.
So, after a period of 19 years, the lunair calendar is missing 207 days. (Which means that we must add 207 days thoughout the 19 years, in order to place the months back within their respective seasons).
How will we add these 207 days without messing up the cycle of moon phases and the seasonal cycle? The best way to do this is by adding these missing days in the form of leap months.
• Converting days to months: (206.91 days)/29.53 days = 7.007 months
So, approximately 7 leap months must be added to compensate for the missing days. This means that during a period of 19 years, 7 will be leap years (containing 13 months each) and 12 will be regular years (containing 12 months each).

Many people believe that the Islamic Calendar is lunar. Yet, upon closer examination of the meanings of the Islamic months, it becomes clear that most of them define distinct seasonal events. Why is it the case, when the calendar is supposed to be lunar (and thus cannot keep track of seasons)?
Is it possible that the Islamic Calendar is a solar one? Well, this is unlikely because solar calendars cannot keep track of the moon phases, while Quran 2:189 mentions their importance for time-keeping.

Human cultures from our oldest records have used the moon phases to record time. Ancient societies across the world observed and measured the Lunar Calendar to understand its influence on their lives.
Why would they do so? Today we don’t appreciate or know how the moon phases affect us.

Ancient mathematicians realized that if they wanted to keep the solar and lunar dates in line, the shortest possible cycle would take 19 years.
How many leap years would we have in this 19-year-cycle?
• 19 solar years are approximately 6939.75 days (= 19 years x 365.25 days)
• 19 years made of 12 lunar months are approximately 6732.84 days (= 19 years x 12 months x 29.53 days)
• Missing (leap) days: 19 "solar years" - 19 "years made of 12 lunar months" =
6939.75 days - 6732.84 days = 206.91 days.
So, after a period of 19 years, the lunair calendar is missing 207 days. (Which means that we must add 207 days thoughout the 19 years, in order to place the months back within their respective seasons).
How will we add these 207 days without messing up the cycle of moon phases and the seasonal cycle? The best way to do this is by adding these missing days in the form of leap months.
• Converting days to months: (206.91 days)/29.53 days = 7.007 months
So, approximately 7 leap months must be added to compensate for the missing days. This means that during a period of 19 years, 7 will be leap years (containing 13 months each) and 12 will be regular years (containing 12 months each).

Many people believe that the Islamic Calendar is lunar. Yet, upon closer examination of the meanings of the Islamic months, it becomes clear that most of them define distinct seasonal events. Why is it the case, when the calendar is supposed to be lunar (and thus cannot keep track of seasons)?
Is it possible that the Islamic Calendar is a solar one? Well, this is unlikely because solar calendars cannot keep track of the moon phases, while Quran 2:189 mentions their importance for time-keeping.
So then, which one is it?

The Chinese Lunar Calendar Explained. The Chinese calendar is split into 60-year cycles, where each year is given two special distinctions: an earthly branch and a celestial stem.
The earthly branches correspond to the 12 animals of the Chinese zodiac: the rat, ox, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, goat, monkey, rooster, dog, and pig. There are various origin stories for why these animals were picked, but the most popular involves a race to the Jade Emperor, in which the rat came in first after ensuring the cat didn’t make it to the finish line. (blue shell vid with screeching cat sound) Many things in the calendar are associated with these 12 branches including the years, months, and even the hours of the day. The 10 Celestial stems originated from the belief in ten suns, and this later spawned the five element system, including wood, fire, earth, metal, and water, that changes every two years. So each year can be defined by a particular animal and element (Example year 1987)
The calendar is further divided into 12 lunar months. These lunar months begin on the New (or Dark) Moon and last one complete lunar cycle, either 29 or 30 days. (29.53) However this doesn’t add up to a full year, so occasionally a leap month is added to balance things out. Each New Year begins on the New Moon closest to the halfway point between the winter solstice and the spring equinox. This always falls between January 21st and February 21st. This ever-changing New Year Day is what causes many Chinese holidays to seemingly move around the calendar.
The upcoming New Year will begin on February 8th (2016) and will mark the 4713th year on the Chinese calendar, ending the year of the wood goat and beginning the year of the fire monkey.

Metonic Cycle:
Ancient mathematicians realized that if they wanted to keep the solar and lunar dates in line, the shortest possible cycle would take 19 years.
How many leap years would we have in this 19-year-cycle?
• 19 solar years are approximately 6939.75 days (= 19 years x 365.25 days)
• 19 years made of 12 lunar months are approximately 6732.84 days (= 19 years x 12 months x 29.53 days)
• Missing (leap) days: 19 "solar years" - 19 "years made of 12 lunar months" =
6939.75 days - 6732.84 days = 206.91 days.
So, after a period of 19 years, the lunair calendar is missing 207 days. (Which means that we must add 207 days thoughout the 19 years, in order to place the months back within their respective seasons).
How will we add these 207 days without messing up the cycle of moon phases and the seasonal cycle? The best way to do this is by adding these missing days in the form of leap months.
• Converting days to months: (206.91 days)/29.53 days = 7.007 months
So, approximately 7 leap months must be added to compensate for the missing days. This means that during a period of 19 years, 7 will be leap years (containing 13 months each) and 12 will be regular years (containing 12 months each).

Many people believe that the Islamic Calendar is lunar. Yet, upon closer examination of the meanings of the Islamic months, it becomes clear that most of them define distinct seasonal events. Why is it the case, when the calendar is supposed to be lunar (and thus cannot keep track of seasons)?
Is it possible that the Islamic Calendar is a solar one? Well, this is unlikely because solar calendars cannot keep track of the moon phases, while Quran 2:189 mentions their importance for time-keeping.
So then, which one is it?
This video gives a detailed explanation of what the true Islamic Calendar is and presents evidence from the Holy Quran.

Islamic calendar
The Islamic calendar, Muslim calendar or Hijri calendar (Anno Hijri or AH)is a lunar calendar consisting of 12 months in a year of 354 or 355 days.
It is used to date events in many Muslim countries (concurrently with the Gregorian calendar), and used by Muslims everywhere to determine the proper days on which to observe the annual fasting, to attend Hajj, and to celebrate other Islamic holidays and festivals.
The first year was the Islamic year beginning in AD 622 during which the emigration of Muhammad from Mecca to Medina, known as the Hijra, occurred. Each numbered year is designated either "H" for Hijra or "AH" for the Latin Anno Hegirae ("in the year of the Hijra"); hence, Muslims typically call their calendar the Hijri calendar.
The current Islamic year is 1437 AH. In the Gregorian calendar, 1437 AH runs from approximately 14 October 2015 to 2 October 2016.
Months
Four of the twelve Hijri months are considered sacred: Rajab (7), and the three consecutive months of Dhū al-Qaʿdah (11), Dhu al-Ḥijjah (12) and Muḥarram (1). Because the lunar calendar lags behind the solar calendar by about ten days every year, months of the Islamic calendar fall in different parts of the Gregorian calendar each year. The cycle repeats every 33 years.

Human cultures from our oldest records have used the moon phases to record time. Ancient societies across the world observed and measured the Lunar Calendar to understand its influence on their lives.
Why would they do so? Today we don’t appreciate or know how the moon phases affect us.
The Gregorian calendar is the most commonly used around the world. It is a solar calendar that was adapted from an earlier Lunisolar version. Today our months are roughly divided into moon cycles, but it doesn’t record exact moon phases. Hence, it doesn’t sync with the moon’s orbit.
If our daily calendar didn’t sync with the sun, would we use it?
Humans didn’t always live out of harmony with the moon. Evidence of the Lunar Calendar is found all over the world. Some are still in use today. The Islamic calendar is purely based on the moon cycle. The Chinese calendar is a Lunisolar calendar, which tracks both the sun and moon.
The Lunar Calendar may even be more accurate than the purely solar calendar that we use. There may be an argument to change the system we use.

Metonic Cycle:
Ancient mathematicians realized that if they wanted to keep the solar and lunar dates in line, the shortest possible cycle would take 19 years.
How many leap years would we have in this 19-year-cycle?
• 19 solar years are approximately 6939.75 days (= 19 years x 365.25 days)
• 19 years made of 12 lunar months are approximately 6732.84 days (= 19 years x 12 months x 29.53 days)
• Missing (leap) days: 19 "solar years" - 19 "years made of 12 lunar months" =
6939.75 days - 6732.84 days = 206.91 days.
So, after a period of 19 years, the lunair calendar is missing 207 days. (Which means that we must add 207 days thoughout the 19 years, in order to place the months back within their respective seasons).
How will we add these 207 days without messing up the cycle of moon phases and the seasonal cycle? The best way to do this is by adding these missing days in the form of leap months.
• Converting days to months: (206.91 days)/29.53 days = 7.007 months
So, approximately 7 leap months must be added to compensate for the missing days. This means that during a period of 19 years, 7 will be leap years (containing 13 months each) and 12 will be regular years (containing 12 months each).

Many people believe that the Islamic Calendar is lunar. Yet, upon closer examination of the meanings of the Islamic months, it becomes clear that most of them define distinct seasonal events. Why is it the case, when the calendar is supposed to be lunar (and thus cannot keep track of seasons)?
Is it possible that the Islamic Calendar is a solar one? Well, this is unlikely because solar calendars cannot keep track of the moon phases, while Quran 2:189 mentions their importance for time-keeping.
So then, which one is it?
This video gives a detailed explanation of what the true Islamic Calendar is and presents evidence from the Holy Quran.

The Chinese Lunar Calendar Explained. The Chinese calendar is split into 60-year cycles, where each year is given two special distinctions: an earthly branch and a celestial stem.
The earthly branches correspond to the 12 animals of the Chinese zodiac: the rat, ox, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, goat, monkey, rooster, dog, and pig. There are various origin stories for why these animals were picked, but the most popular involves a race to the Jade Emperor, in which the rat came in first after ensuring the cat didn’t make it to the finish line. (blue shell vid with screeching cat sound) Many things in the calendar are associated with these 12 branches including the years, months, and even the hours of the day. The 10 Celestial stems originated from the belief in ten suns, and this later spawned the five element system, including wood, fire, earth, metal, and water, that changes every two years. So each year can be defined by a particular animal and element (Example year 1987)
The calendar is further divided into 12 lunar months. These lunar months begin on the New (or Dark) Moon and last one complete lunar cycle, either 29 or 30 days. (29.53) However this doesn’t add up to a full year, so occasionally a leap month is added to balance things out. Each New Year begins on the New Moon closest to the halfway point between the winter solstice and the spring equinox. This always falls between January 21st and February 21st. This ever-changing New Year Day is what causes many Chinese holidays to seemingly move around the calendar.
The upcoming New Year will begin on February 8th (2016) and will mark the 4713th year on the Chinese calendar, ending the year of the wood goat and beginning the year of the fire monkey.
