Albert Camus' The Stranger is one of the most widely read novels in the world, with millions of copies sold. It stands as perhaps the greatest existentialist tale ever conceived, and is certainly one of the most important and influential books ever produced. Now, for the first time, this revered masterpiece is available as an unabridged audio production.
When a young Algerian named Meursault kills a man, his subsequent imprisonment and trial are puzzling and absurd. The apparently amoral Meursault, who puts little stock in ideas like love and God, seems to be on trial less for his murderous actions, and more for what the authorities believe is his deficient character.
This remarkable translation by Matthew Ward has been considered the definitive English version since its original publication. It unlocks the prose as no other English version has, allowing the listener to soak up the richness of Camus' ideas.

L'Étranger est un roman d'Albert Camus, paru en 1942. Il prend place dans la tétralogie que Camus nommera « cycle de l'absurde » qui décrit les fondements de la philosophie camusienne : l'absurde. Cette tétralogie comprend également l'essai intitulé Le Mythe de Sisyphe ainsi que les pièces de théâtre Caligula et Le Malentendu. Le roman a été traduit en quarante langues et une adaptation cinématographique a été réalisée par Luchino Visconti en 1967.
Le style
L'usage quasi-systématique de la première personne du singulier, tout au long du roman, incite le lecteur à s'identifier au personnage. Le ton détaché de son monologue restitue le paysage mental de Meursault tout en aidant le lecteur à pénétrer dans l'univers de Camus. Libre à lui ensuite d'approfondir sa lecture pour une compréhension plus exhaustive de la philosophie de l'auteur.
L'écriture du roman, particulièrement neutre et blanche, fait la part belle au passé composé, dont Sartre dira qu'il « accentue la solitude de chaque unité phrastique ». Ce style ajoute donc à la solitude de ce personnage face au monde et à lui-même.
On note la tendance de Camus à jeter des passerelles entre ses différentes œuvres. En prison, pendant que son procès se prépare, Meursault remarque un article de journal relatant un fait divers qui constitue en fait l'intrigue de la pièce de théâtre Le Malentendu. De même, quelques années plus tard dans La Peste, est évoquée « une arrestation récente qui avait fait du bruit à Alger. Il s'agissait d'un jeune employé de commerce qui avait tué un Arabe sur une plage ».

Albert Camus (French pronunciation: [albɛʁ kamy] (
listen); 7 November 1913 – 4 January 1960) was a French author, journalist, and philosopher. His views contributed to the rise of the philosophy known as absurdism. He wrote in his essay "The Rebel" that his whole life was devoted to opposing the philosophy of nihilism while still delving deeply into individual freedom.
Although often cited as a proponent of existentialism, the philosophy with which Camus was associated during his own lifetime, he rejected this particular label. In an interview in 1945, Camus rejected any ideological associations: "No, I am not an existentialist. Sartre and I are always surprised to see our names linked..."
In 1949, Camus founded the Group for International Liaisons within the Revolutionary Union Movement, which was opposed to some tendencies of the Surrealist movement of André Breton.
Camus was awarded the 1957 Nobel Prize for Literature "for his important literary production, which with clear-sighted earnestness illuminates the problems of the human conscience in our times". He was the second-youngest recipient of the Nobel Prize in Literature, after Rudyard Kipling, and the first African-born writer to receive the award. He is the shortest-lived of any Nobel literature laureate to date, having died in an automobile accident just over two years after receiving the award.

L'Étranger est un roman d'Albert Camus, paru en 1942. Il prend place dans la tétralogie que Camus nommera « cycle de l'absurde » qui décrit les fondements de la philosophie camusienne : l'absurde. Cette tétralogie comprend également l'essai intitulé Le Mythe de Sisyphe ainsi que les pièces de théâtre Caligula et Le Malentendu. Le roman a été traduit en quarante langues et une adaptation cinématographique a été réalisée par Luchino Visconti en 1967.
Le style
L'usage quasi-systématique de la première personne du singulier, tout au long du roman, incite le lecteur à s'identifier au personnage. Le ton détaché de son monologue restitue le paysage mental de Meursault tout en aidant le lecteur à pénétrer dans l'univers de Camus. Libre à lui ensuite d'approfondir sa lecture pour une compréhension plus exhaustive de la philosophie de l'auteur.
L'écriture du roman, particulièrement neutre et blanche, fait la part belle au passé composé, dont Sartre dira qu'il « accentue la solitude de chaque unité phrastique ». Ce style ajoute donc à la solitude de ce personnage face au monde et à lui-même.
On note la tendance de Camus à jeter des passerelles entre ses différentes œuvres. En prison, pendant que son procès se prépare, Meursault remarque un article de journal relatant un fait divers qui constitue en fait l'intrigue de la pièce de théâtre Le Malentendu. L'Étranger est un roman d'Albert Camus, paru en 1942. Il prend place dans la tétralogie que Camus nommera « cycle de l'absurde » qui décrit les fondements de la philosophie camusienne : l'absurde. Cette tétralogie comprend également l'essai intitulé Le Mythe de Sisyphe ainsi que les pièces de théâtre Caligula et Le Malentendu. Le roman a été traduit en quarante langues et une adaptation cinématographique a été réalisée par Luchino Visconti en 1967.
Le style
L'usage quasi-systématique de la première personne du singulier, tout au long du roman, incite le lecteur à s'identifier au personnage. Le ton détaché de son monologue restitue le paysage mental de Meursault tout en aidant le lecteur à pénétrer dans l'univers de Camus. Libre à lui ensuite d'approfondir sa lecture pour une compréhension plus exhaustive de la philosophie de l'auteur.
L'écriture du roman, particulièrement neutre et blanche, fait la part belle au passé composé, dont Sartre dira qu'il « accentue la solitude de chaque unité phrastique ». Ce style ajoute donc à la solitude de ce personnage face au monde et à lui-même.
On note la tendance de Camus à jeter des passerelles entre ses différentes œuvres. En prison, pendant que son procès se prépare, Meursault remarque un article de journal relatant un fait divers qui constitue en fait l'intrigue de la pièce de théâtre Le Malentendu. De même, quelques années plus tard dans La Peste, est évoquée « une arrestation récente qui avait fait du bruit à Alger. Análisis de la primera novela de Albert Camus: El extranjero.

La primera novela de Albert Camus, El Extranjero, publicada en 1937 posee, entre varias particularidades, la de ser, además la más ampliamente difundida de las obras del escritor argelino. Expresa una cierta peculiaridad hipnótica que, aunada al ritmo y la brevedad de la narración, logra convertirla en uno de esos escasos libros que se hacen leer de un tirón. Desde el primer párrafo Camus nos sumerge en el terreno de lo absurdo que, sin embargo, nos resulta siniestramente familiar pues tal absurdo es un fiel reflejo de la existencia del hombre moderno, en la que lo cotidiano y lo extraordinario, lo predecible y lo inexplicable se alternan de manera aleatoriamente aleatoria, simplemente suceden y el aparente carácter caótico que determina y moldea toda esa absurda sucesión de fenómenos absurdos conocida como la vida es presentado en la novela con la vertiginosa trepidancia propia de la misma.
Partiendo del absurdo como condición existencial primaria y destino ineludible del sujeto, el autor desarrolla una crítica elegantemente mordaz e implacable de los valores de la sociedad burguesa, sumando absurdo tras absurdo expresados mediante la sacralización de la muerte, la piedad artificial de los ritos funerarios y del propio luto, así, como las conductas individuales y colectivas que los legitiman conformando un ineludible círculo vicioso de prejuicios, hipocresía e ignorancia malintencionada del cuál, una vez dentro, es absolutamente imposible escapar,[1],pues de principio a fin, de la cuna a la tumba cada existencia individual corresponde a la concretización subjetiva de lo absurdo como rasgo definitorio y definitivo del hombre y del cosmos.
Tema recurrente en toda su obra, el Sistema Judicial es la representación última de la más absurda pretensión del hombre: creerse capaz de distinguir valor alguno en las acciones de sus semejantes y llegar a la pretensión de poder ejercer la justicia. Así dentro de la teatralidad totalizante que es la existencia individual se representa un segundo drama: una trágica pantomima con niveles aún más patéticamente perversos de histrionismo. En este teatro de la crueldad el actor por antonomasia, el histrión último es el juez, impostor de Dios, representación de la incurable necedad del hombre que, ciego a la verdad, se cree capaz de ejercer la justicia. El título del ensayo proviene de un atribulado personaje de la mitología griega. En él, Camus discute la cuestión del suicidio y el valor de la vida, presentando el mito de Sísifo como metáfora del esfuerzo inútil e incesante del hombre.
De esta forma planea la filosofía del absurdo, que mantiene que nuestras vidas son insignificantes y no tienen más valor que el de lo que creamos. Siendo el mundo tan fútil, Camus pregunta, ¿qué alternativa hay al suicidio? El ensayo se inicia: No hay sino un problema filosófico realmente serio: el suicidio.
Sísifo, dentro de la mitología griega, como Prometeo, hizo enfadar a los dioses por su extraordinaria astucia. Como castigo, fue condenado a perder la vista y a empujar perpetuamente un peñasco gigante montaña arriba hasta la cima, sólo para que volviese a caer rodando hasta el valle, desde donde debía recogerlo y empujarlo nuevamente hasta la cumbre y así indefinidamente.
Camus desarrolla la idea del "hombre absurdo", o con una "sensibilidad absurda". Es aquél que se muestra perpetuamente consciente de la completa inutilidad de su vida. También es aquél que, incapaz de entender el mundo, se confronta en todo momento a esta incomprensión. El hombre rebelde será, por lo tanto, aquel que se encuentre en todo momento frente al mundo. Para ello es necesario una ética de la cantidad, no de la calidad, que acumule el mayor número de experiencias. Esta "eterna vivacidad", este eterno confortamiento con el absurdo mediante el mayor número de experiencias es justamente lo que daría sentido a no renegar del absurdo. En este punto Camus muestra como su existencialismo no promueve el quietismo y la pasividad ante el absurdo. Aceptar el absurdo, afirma, es la única alternativa aceptable al injustificable salto de fe que constituye la base de todas las religiones (e incluso del existencialismo, que por tanto Camus no aceptaba completamente). Aprovechándose de numerosas fuentes filosóficas y literarias, y particularmente de Dostoievski, Camus describe el progreso histórico de la conciencia del absurdo y concluye que Sísifo es el héroe absurdo definitivo.
En su ensayo, Camus afirma que Sísifo experimenta la libertad durante un breve instante, cuando ha terminado de empujar el peñasco y aún no tiene que comenzar de nuevo abajo. En ese punto, Camus sentía que Sísifo, a pesar de ser ciego, sabía que las vistas del paisaje estaban ahí y debía haberlo encontrado edificante: "Uno debe imaginar feliz a Sísifo", declara, por lo que aparentemente lo salva de su destino suicida.
La obra se cierra con un apéndice sobre la obra de Franz Kafka, interpretada finalmente de manera similar, en términos de un esteticismo, a su modo, esperanzador.

J’ai grandi dans la mer et la pauvreté m’a été fastueuse, puis j’ai perdu la mer, tous les luxes alors m’ont paru gris, la misère intolérable. Depuis, j’attends. J’attends les navires du retour, la maison des eaux, le jour limpide. Je patiente, je suis poli de toutes mes forces. On me voit passer dans de belles rues savantes, j’admire les paysages, j’applaudis comme tout le monde, je donne la main, ce n’est pas moi qui parle. On me loue, je rêve un peu, on m’offense, je m’étonne à peine. Puis j’oublie et souris à qui m’outrage, ou je salue trop courtoisement celui que j’aime. Que faire si je n’ai de mémoire que pour une seule image ?

Albert Camus (1913--1960) was a journalist, editor and editorialist, playwright and director, novelist and author of short stories, political essayist and activist—and arguably, although he came to deny it, a philosopher. He ignored or opposed systematic philosophy, had little faith in rationalism, asserted rather than argued many of his main ideas, presented others in metaphors, was preoccupied with immediate and personal experience, and brooded over such questions as the meaning of life in the face of death. Although he forcefully separated himself from existentialism, Camus posed one of the twentieth century's best-known existentialist questions, which launches The Myth of Sisyphus: "There is only one really serious philosophical question, and that is suicide". And his philosophy of the absurd has left us with a striking image of the human fate: Sisyphus endlessly pushing his rock up the mountain only to see it roll back down each time he gains the top. Camus's philosophy found political expression in The Rebel, which along with his newspaper editorials, political essays, plays, and fiction earned him a reputation as a great moralist. It also embroiled him in conflict with his friend, Jean-Paul Sartre, provoking the major political-intellectual divide of the Cold-War era as Camus and Sartre became, respectively, the leading intellectual voices of the anti-Communist and pro-Communist left. Furthermore, in posing and answering urgent philosophical questions of the day, Camus articulated a critique of religion and of the Enlightenment and all its projects, including Marxism. In 1957 he won the Nobel Prize for literature. He died in a car accident in January, 1960, at the age of 46.
In his statement of the problem and its solution, Camus's tone, ideas, and style are reminiscent of Nietzsche. "God is dead" is of course their common starting point, as is the determination to confront unpleasant truths and write against received wisdom. At the same time Camus argues against the specific philosophical current with which Nietzsche is often linked as a precursor, and to which he himself is closest—existentialism. The Myth of Sisyphus is explicitly written against existentialists such as Shestov, Kierkegaard, Jaspers, and Heidegger, as well as against the phenomenology of Husserl. Camus shares their starting point, which he regards as the fact that they all somehow testify to the absurdity of the human condition. But he rejects what he sees as their ultimate escapism and irrationality, claiming that "they deify what crushes them and find reason to hope in what impoverishes them. According to Camus, each existentialist writer betrayed his initial insight by seeking to appeal to something beyond the limits of the human condition, by turning to the transcendent. We are unable to free ourselves from "this desire for unity, this longing to solve, this need for clarity and cohesion" . Camus clearly believes that the existentialist philosophers are mistaken but does not argue against them, because he believes that "there is no truth but merely truths" (MS, 43). His disagreement rather takes the subtler and less assertive form of an immanent critique, pointing out that each thinker's existentialist philosophy ends up being inconsistent with its own starting point: "starting from a philosophy of the world's lack of meaning, it ends up by finding a meaning and depth in it". These philosophers, he insists, refuse to accept the conclusions that follow from their own premises. Kierkegaard, for example, strongly senses the absurd. But rather than respecting it as the inevitable human ailment, he seeks to be cured of it by making it an attribute of a God who he then embraces.

Albert Camus (1913--1960) was a journalist, editor and editorialist, playwright and director, novelist and author of short stories, political essayist and activist—and arguably, although he came to deny it, a philosopher. He ignored or opposed systematic philosophy, had little faith in rationalism, asserted rather than argued many of his main ideas, presented others in metaphors, was preoccupied with immediate and personal experience, and brooded over such questions as the meaning of life in the face of death. Although he forcefully separated himself from existentialism, Camus posed one of the twentieth century's best-known existentialist questions, which launches The Myth of Sisyphus: "There is only one really serious philosophical question, and that is suicide". And his philosophy of the absurd has left us with a striking image of the human fate: Sisyphus endlessly pushing his rock up the mountain only to see it roll back down each time he gains the top. Camus's philosophy found political expression in The Rebel, which along with his newspaper editorials, political essays, plays, and fiction earned him a reputation as a great moralist. It also embroiled him in conflict with his friend, Jean-Paul Sartre, provoking the major political-intellectual divide of the Cold-War era as Camus and Sartre became, respectively, the leading intellectual voices of the anti-Communist and pro-Communist left. Furthermore, in posing and answering urgent philosophical questions of the day, Camus articulated a critique of religion and of the Enlightenment and all its projects, including Marxism. In 1957 he won the Nobel Prize for literature. He died in a car accident in January, 1960, at the age of 46.
In his statement of the problem and its solution, Camus's tone, ideas, and style are reminiscent of Nietzsche. "God is dead" is of course their common starting point, as is the determination to confront unpleasant truths and write against received wisdom. Si le projet se précise à partir de 1953, c'est en 1958-59 qu'il entame une phase décisive de son écriture - qui sera brutalement interrompue par sa mort, le 4 janvier 1960. Nourri de l'expérience propre de Camus, Le Premier Homme n'est pourtant pas une autobiographie ; c'est l'histoire d'un homme qui, à 40 ans, revient sur son passé pour comprendre d'où il vient et qui il est. Camus, der in diesem Jahr seinen 100 Geburtstag gefeiert hätte, gilt als einer der wichtigsten Vertreter der Existenzphilosophie. Dabei steht der Franzose mit seinem Ansatz in einer großen philosophischen Tradition, nämlich der moralistischen. Bereits in der Antike fragten ihre Vertreter nach dem Sinn; also danach, wie der Mensch ein Leben führen kann, das ihn glücklich macht. Unter dem Einfluss des Christentums wurde die Frage verdrängt, ab dem 16. Jahrhundert tauchte sie wieder auf - und mündete in die moderne Sinnphilosophie, in den Existenzialismus. Im Gegensatz zu Kierkegaard fand Camus keine Antworten mehr in metaphysischen Gefilden, stattdessen vertraute er auf die Vernunft - und prägte er den Begriff der Absurdität des Seins, die Sinn suchende melancholisch und rational zu ertragen haben.
Heute ist Camus etwas aus der Mode geraten, und es stellt sich die Frage: Macht es noch Sinn, nach dem Sinn zu fragen? Ist die Welt immer noch so absurd, wie sie Camus schien -- oder erkennen wir mehr Sinnhaftigkeit in ihr? Sind wir mittlerweile so frei, uns ein gutes Leben zu gestalten? Wie können wir heute die Sinnfrage für uns beantworten?
