A detailed tutorial video on How to open the Xbox 360 Slim CD / DVD / Disk Drive tray without damaging your console and to fix the stuck tray.
Make sure you check the limit switch right next to the cd drive motor as if it's loose it will also cause the tray to jam. See 12:10 in the video.

Our magnificent IBM 729 7-track magnetic tape drive is giving us read and write errors. We attempt another heroic repair. Which is a great excuse to take a close look at its amazing innards. Looks like nothing in the video, but just putting the 3 brush blocks back was a 3 hour operation with mostly 6 hands at a time inside the drives - including mine, which is why there is no video documenting it. Hence the clapping at the end, we were quite relieved we did put it back together correctly!
Tape capacity is around 20 MB at the highest (800 cpi) density setting. Actually quite respectable if you compare it to this machine's main memory (16KB).

Extra special thanks to Shashi Chuganey for spooling the wire from scratch at our Oregon facility, and to Raymond Lee for silver epoxying them in our clean room facility in California. This artist’s rendering illustrates new findings about a star shredded by a black hole. When a star wanders too close to a black hole, intense tidal forces rip the star apart. In these events, called “tidal disruptions,” some of the stellar debris is flung outward at high speed while the rest falls toward the black hole. This causes a distinct X-ray flare that can last for a few years. NASA’s Chandra X-ray Observatory, Swift Gamma-ray Burst Explorer, and ESA/NASA’s XMM-Newton collected different pieces of this astronomical puzzle in a tidal disruption event called ASASSN-14li, which was found in an optical search by the All-Sky Automated Survey for Supernovae (ASAS-SN) in November 2014. The event occurred near a supermassive black hole estimated to weigh a few million times the mass of the sun in the center of PGC 043234, a galaxy that lies about 290 million light-years away. Astronomers hope to find more events like ASASSN-14li to test theoretical models about how black holes affect their environments.
During the tidal disruption event, filaments containing much of the star's mass fall toward the black hole. Eventually these gaseous filaments merge into a smooth, hot disk glowing brightly in X-rays. As the disk forms, its central region heats up tremendously, which drives a flow of material, called a wind, away from the disk.

Track (disk drive)
A disk drive track is a circular path on the surface of a disk or diskette on which information is magnetically recorded and from which recorded information is read.
A track is a physical division of data in a disk drive, as used in the Cylinder-Head-Record (CCHHRR) addressing mode of a CKD disk. The concept is concentric, through the physical platters, being a data circle per each cylinder of the whole disk drive. In other words, the number of tracks on a single surface in the drive exactly equals the number of cylinders of the drive.
Tracks are subdivided into blocks (or sectors, pages) (see: Storage block and Virtual page).
The term track is sometimes prefaced with the word logical (i.e. "3390-9 has 3 logical tracks per physical track") to emphasize the fact when used as an abstract concept, not a track in the physical sense.

Disk storage
Disk storage is a general category of storage mechanisms where data are recorded by various electronic, magnetic, optical, or mechanical changes to a surface layer of one or more rotating disks. A disk drive is a device implementing such a storage mechanism. Notable types are the hard disk drive (HDD) containing a non-removable disk, the floppy disk drive (FDD) and its removable floppy disk, and various optical disc drives and associated optical disc media.
(The spelling disk and disc are used interchangeably except where trademarks preclude one usage, e.g. the Compact Disc logo. The choice of a particular form is frequently historical, as in IBM's usage of the disk form beginning in 1956 with the "IBM 350 disk storage unit").
Background
Audio information was originally recorded by analog methods (see Sound recording and reproduction). Similarly the first video disc used an analog recording method. In the music industry, analog recording has been mostly replaced by digital optical technology where the data are recorded in a digital format with optical information.

My book "Patterns in Data Management" is now available both as an ebook or a print book (with color graphics!). See: http://amzn.to/1Ts3rwx This book is not a standard textbook on database techniques. This book was written extending and complementing preexisting educational videos (including this one).
Why would hard disks still be important these days? What is a platter? What is a diskhead and a disk arm? How do tracks and cylinders relate? What is the difference of a circular sector from a HD sector? What is zone bit recording? What does this imply for sequential access? Where are self-correcting blocks used? What is the difference of HD sectors and operating systems blocks? What is physical cylinder/head/sector-addressing? What is logical cylinder/head/sector-addressing? How does it relate to the former? What is logical block addressing? What is sparing? What does this imply for sequential accesses?

Make sure you check the limit switch right next to the cd drive motor as if it's loose it will also cause the tray to jam. See 12:10 in the video.

Our magnificent IBM 729 7-track magnetic tape drive is giving us read and write errors. We attempt another heroic repair. Which is a great excuse to take a close look at its amazing innards. Looks like nothing in the video, but just putting the 3 brush blocks back was a 3 hour operation with mostly 6 hands at a time inside the drives - including mine, which is why there is no video documenting it. Hence the clapping at the end, we were quite relieved we did put it back together correctly!
Tape capacity is around 20 MB at the highest (800 cpi) density setting. Actually quite respectable if you compare it to this machine's main memory (16KB).

Special thanks to Samtec for fabricating and donating the IBM-spec special wire. Extra special thanks to Shashi Chuganey for spooling the wire from scratch at our Oregon facility, and to Raymond Lee for silver epoxying them in our clean room facility in California. Also thanks to CHM docent team member Dave Bennett for finding a commercial source of replica brushes. So I didn't have to do the 92 production ones after the first 8 hero prototypes...

This artist’s rendering illustrates new findings about a star shredded by a black hole. When a star wanders too close to a black hole, intense tidal forces rip the star apart. In these events, called “tidal disruptions,” some of the stellar debris is flung outward at high speed while the rest falls toward the black hole. This causes a distinct X-ray flare that can last for a few years. NASA’s Chandra X-ray Observatory, Swift Gamma-ray Burst Explorer, and ESA/NASA’s XMM-Newton collected different pieces of this astronomical puzzle in a tidal disruption event called ASASSN-14li, which was found in an optical search by the All-Sky Automated Survey for Supernovae (ASAS-SN) in November 2014. The event occurred near a supermassive black hole estimated to weigh a few million times the mass of the sun in the center of PGC 043234, a galaxy that lies about 290 million light-years away. Astronomers hope to find more events like ASASSN-14li to test theoretical models about how black holes affect their environments.
During the tidal disruption event, filaments containing much of the star's mass fall toward the black hole. Eventually these gaseous filaments merge into a smooth, hot disk glowing brightly in X-rays. As the disk forms, its central region heats up tremendously, which drives a flow of material, called a wind, away from the disk.

Our magnificent IBM 729 7-track magnetic tape drive is giving us read and write errors. We attempt another heroic repair. Which is a great excuse to take a close look at its amazing innards. Looks like nothing in the video, but just putting the 3 brush blocks back was a 3 hour operation with mostly 6 hands at a time inside the drives - including mine, which is why there is no video documenting it. Hence the clapping at the end, we were quite relieved we did put it back together correctly!
Tape capacity is around 20 MB at the highest (800 cpi) density setting. Actually quite respectable if you compare it to this machine's main memory (16KB).

Special thanks to Samtec for fabricating and donating the IBM-spec special wire. Extra special thanks to Shashi Chuganey for spooling the wire from scratch at our Oregon facility, and to Raymond Lee for silver epoxying them in our clean room facility in California. Also thanks to CHM docent team member Dave Bennett for finding a commercial source of replica brushes. So I didn't have to do the 92 production ones after the first 8 hero prototypes...

Commodore 1541C Floppy Disk Drive Repair & Cleaning
A short video covering the repair of a Commodore 1541 C Floppy Disk Drive. Mitsumi Newtronics Head coil resistance readings on a working drive:- red & yellow: 25.6 Ohm red & black: 12.4 Ohm red & blue: 23.8 Ohm yellow & black: 13.8 Ohm yellow & blue: 25.2 Ohm black & blue: 12.0 Ohm For the Newtronics 1541C model:- J3 ON = track 0 bump J3 OFF = track 0 use photo sensor J1 ON J2 ON = DEVICE 8 J1 OFF J2 ON = DEVICE 9 J1 ON J2 OFF = DEVICE 10 J1 OFF J2 OFF = DEVICE 11 Cleaned the heads really well twice, still not reading at all - zeros coming back no matter what is read. DL#088 - IBM LTO-3 Tape Drive & Dell TL-2000 Tape Library Teardown
In this video i teardown an IBM LTO-3 Tape Drive and take a quick look at a Dell TL-2000 LTO Tape Library. The library i bought as non-working with a robotic fault, it appears as though it had maybe been dropped and there was some damage to the robot and other plastics. These i repaired, the library will be going off to a new home to have an LTO-5 or LTO-6 drive putting in. The old LTO-3 drive is removed and i tear it down. (Insert Comic Book Guy Voice here)...Well actually George Lucas originally called 'Return of the Jedi' 'Revenge of the Jedi' but changed the name at the last minute as revenge didn't sound like something a Jedi would do.
(Reply) Yep...that's why I mentioned it - I just thought it was an interesting fact worth sharing that (according to the label on this disc) it appears the film was still known as 'Revenge' in Japan despite the name change.

Thanks to helpful Japanese fluent viewers - it seems that the translation app mis-read the symbol for Big as Dog

Thanks again to these clever people in the comments - the text on side two of the disc that was blank and inaccurately translated to "from been no", actually says "Shuuroku sarete orimasen", meaning "No recording"
Star Wars (again) - back to the Comic Book Guy voice...
'Well actually you can only see Star Wars in it's un-ruined original version on LaserDisc and VHD, so when you say that these formats aren't really worth watching any more you couldn't be any more wrongerer actually.
A) I'll let you in on the secret (that any true Star Wars fan should already know)...Look up "Harmy's Despecialized" - now That is the best way to see the original unchanged Star Wars...not in a 250 line low-res washed out 4:3 crop with Japanese subtitles.
Q) Whats on the blank side of the disc?
A) Interesting fact (but not interesting enough for me to include in the video despite shooting it)...the end of the caddy that goes in the machine has a series of notches on it that tells the machine what way up the caddy is and whether it contains a single or double sided discs.
So if you get a disc like the magazine that only has one side, the machine refuses to let you insert side B. Also the machine will not let you put a disc back in the caddy the wrong way up, it only ejects when the caddy is the right way up.
Like I said, not interesting enough for the video, but still a neat system. In comparison the RCA CED had no caddy orientation system so you could mess things up royally if you really wanted to.
(Comment) Those monitors aren't cheap.
A) I must have got lucky - mine cost about £100
(C) Blimey that's not cheap

Q) "YOU ARE WRONG - BACK TO THE FUTURE WAS CROPPED FOR CINEMA RELEASE - IT SHOULD NOT BE SEEN IN A FULL FRAME VERSION"
A) A lot of movies of this period were shot open matte in Super 35. They were cropped to a widescreen format to be shown in the cinema and then when shown on 4:3 TV screens, they often used the full open-matte frame which revealed more footage at the top and the bottom of the frame. So both versions are right, neither is wrong. Each serves a purpose. It's just that nowadays most of these old films will only be shown in their cropped versions given the proliferation of 16:9 screens in the home.
