A maypole is a tall wooden pole erected as a part of various European folk festivals, around which a maypole dance often takes place.
The festivals may occur on May Day or Pentecost (Whitsun), although in some countries it is instead erected at Midsummer. In some cases the maypole is a permanent feature that is only utilised during the festival, although in other cases it is erected specifically for the purpose before being taken down again.
Primarily found within the nations of Germanic Europe and the neighbouring areas which they have influenced, its origins remain unknown, although it has been speculated that it originally had some importance in the Germanic paganism of Iron Age and early Medieval cultures, and that the tradition survived Christianisation, albeit losing any original meaning that it had. It has been a recorded practice in many parts of Europe throughout the Medieval and Early Modern periods, although it became less popular in the 18th and 19th centuries. Today, the tradition is still observed in some parts of Europe and among European communities in North America.
Dance is a performance art form consisting of purposefully selected sequences of human movement. This movement has aesthetic and symbolic value, and is acknowledged as dance by performers and observers within a particular culture. Dance can be categorized and described by its choreography, by its repertoire of movements, or by its historical period or place of origin.
An important distinction is to be drawn between the contexts of theatrical and participatory dance, although these two categories are not always completely separate; both may have special functions, whether social, ceremonial, competitive, erotic, martial, or sacred/liturgical. Others disciplines of human movement are sometimes said to have a dance-like quality, including martial arts, gymnastics, figure skating, synchronized swimming and many other forms of athletics.
Theatrical dance, also called performance or concert dance, is intended primarily as a spectacle, usually a performance upon a stage by virtuoso dancers. It often tells a story, perhaps using mime, costume and scenery, or else it may simply interpret the musical accompaniment, which is often specially composed. Examples are western ballet and modern dance, Classical Indian dance and Chinese and Japanese song and dance dramas. Most classical forms are centred upon dance alone, but performance dance may also appear in opera and other forms of musical theatre.
A wicker man was a large wicker statue purportedly used by the ancient Druids (priests of Celtic paganism) for sacrifice by burning it in effigy, according to Julius Caesar in his Commentarii de Bello Gallico (Commentary on the Gallic War). Contradicting the Roman sources, more recent scholarship finds that "there is little archeological evidence" of human sacrifice by the Celts, and suggests the likelihood that Greeks and Romans disseminated negative information out of disdain for the barbarians. There is no evidence of the practices Julius Caesar described, and the stories of human sacrifice appear to derive from a single source, Poseidonius, whose claims are unsupported.
Archaeological evidence from the British Isles seems to indicate that human sacrifice may have been practiced, over times long pre-dating any contact with Rome. Human remains have been found at the foundations of structures from the Neolithic time to the Roman era, with injuries and in positions that argue for their being foundation sacrifices.

Twelve dancing fairies from Rockford Dance Company performed a Maypole dance choreographed by new Artistic Director Matthew Keefe as over 250 fairies and fairy-lovers enjoyed the 4th annual Fairy Festival at Womanspace in Rockford IL. Families and guests of all ages strolled the grounds and art gallery at Womanspace, while fairies led a scavenger hunt through the beautiful gardens, the magical pine forest, and out onto the Labyrinth on the prairie. There were ballets performed on the green by Rockford Dance Company and guests made fairy crowns and wands to take home. Wonderland Books & Toys and Faeriefeather Design joined us with fairy delights to purchase and Alter Ego Face & Body Paint had a never-ending line of little fairies awaiting their artistic talents. Some guests came early & bro...
SRV students have been dancing the Maypole at the school's annual May Fair since 1929, and they've been dancing it more or less in its current form since the early 1970s, when Nancy Ewald re-choreographed the dance to Ralph Vaughan Williams's "Seventeen Come Sunday", the first movement of his English Folk Song Suite. SRV alumni often report still getting goosebumps or lumps in their throats watching the dance decades after they performed it themselves. The Maypole Dance draws former students back to the May Fair year after year to remember their roots. It's a tradition binding generations of students in celebration of their community. This video was recorded by Linda Goss in 2015. Heidi Hammel provided the history.
ENG: The group was set up by three guys from Milanówek (Kris, Yogi & Chmielek), which exists in underground fans' circles since 2001. Around 2006 Shorty - the vocalist - joined the band. Flis, the bassist, turned out to be the complement of the current line-up. He joined the band in 2009. Maypole's music is the mixture of punk and hardcore, which makes it exuberantly acclaimed by the crowd. Their CD debut 'In Your Hands', produced in Serakos Studio, saw the light of the day thanks to cooperation with Burning Chords record label. saw this movie the other day with my buddy mills. i think it was the basis of resident evil 4. I dont think it was a musical, but it has a lot of the most bizarre sing and dance pieces.
Expertly done by these school children. It's the last practice before the performance, but the first time they are having to skip on grass, which is much more difficult than the solid playground they are used to. Look how they pause to admire the Plait they have made, before the music changes and they unwind.

In the woods there grew a tree
And a fine fine tree was he
And on that tree there was a limb
And on that limb there was a branch
And on that branch there was a nest
And in that nest there was an egg
And in that egg there was a bird
And from that bird a feather came
And of that feather was
A bed
And on that bed there was a girl
And on that girl there was a man
And from that man there was a seed
And from that seed there was a boy
And from that boy there was a man
And for that man there was a grave
From that grave there grew
A tree
