Starting a locomotive is similar to starting a car, in that you should check the fluids and crank her over. But, that is where the similarities end.
Follow the crew of the Coopersville & Marne Railway, as they fire up their venerable SW9, originally built for the Grand Trunk Western.
The engineer walks through the process, from throwing the electrical knife switch to cranking over the engine and rolling the engine out of the engine house.

The Caterpillar Locomotive SD70ACe Walkaround & Inside at MINExpo 2012. The CAT Locomotive is a new asset to CAT's portfolio. After its acquisition of Bucyrus, Caterpillar can now call itself a true mining full line player. And yet, the American company envisages even greater growth potential and is taking to the railroads with its first ever locomotive.

This is the opening sequence to a musical short film I developed independently in 2008 at the age of 23. It was conceived as a love letter to 1940s postwar Disney animation as well as the musical stylings of the Andrews Sisters. The music was composed by Tom Hambleton at Undertone Music in Minneapolis.
Animated in my spare time between 2009 and 2011, the project was shelved when I got hired at Disney Animation in the fall of 2011. The entire six minute film exists as a story reel with completed songs, but only this opening sequence made it to animation production. Many of the shots are missing effects, still have rough layout stand-ins, or didn’t make it to cleanup.
The project sat dormant from 2012-2015 while I animated on several Disney feature films. I recently made the difficult decision to cancel the project and retire the incomplete animation online. It is the creative authorship of a much younger filmmaker and its time has passed. I learned a great deal from this project and I’m eternally grateful for the insight, feedback, and contributions of everyone who helped me during its development.

A locomotive is a railway vehicle that provides the motive power for a train. The word originates from the Latin loco – "from a place", ablative of locus, "place" + Medieval Latin motivus, "causing motion", and is a shortened form of the term locomotive engine, first used in the early 19th century to distinguish between mobile and stationary steam engines.
A locomotive has no payload capacity of its own, and its sole purpose is to move the train along the tracks. In contrast, some trains have self-propelled payload-carrying vehicles. These are not normally considered locomotives, and may be referred to as multiple units, motor coaches or railcars. The use of these self-propelled vehicles is increasingly common for passenger trains, but rare for freight (see CargoSprinter). Vehicles which provide motive power to haul an unpowered train, but are not generally considered locomotives because they have payload space or are rarely detached from their trains, are known as power cars.
Traditionally, locomotives pull trains from the front. Increasingly common is push-pull operation, where a locomotive pulls the train in one direction and pushes it in the other, and can be controlled from a control cab at the other end of the train.

"The Brave Locomotive" - Opening Sequence Work In Progress"The Brave Locomotive" - Opening Sequence Work In Progress
This is the opening sequence to a musical short film I developed independently in 2008 at the age of 23. It was conceived as a love letter to 1940s postwar Disney animation as well as the musical stylings of the Andrews Sisters. The music was composed by Tom Hambleton at Undertone Music in Minneapolis. Animated in my spare time between 2009 and 2011, the project was shelved when I got hired at Disney Animation in the fall of 2011. The entire six minute film exists as a story reel with completed songs, but only this opening sequence made it to animation production. Many of the shots are missing effects, still have rough layout stand-ins, or didn’t make it to cleanup. The project sat dormant from 2012-2015 while I animated on several Disney feature films. I recently made the difficult decision to cancel the project and retire the incomplete animation online. It is the creative authorship of a much younger filmmaker and its time has passed. I learned a great deal from this project and I’m eternally grateful for the insight, feedback, and contributions of everyone who helped me during its development. An Inside view of an EMD locomotive, Loco Pilot operate the loco & an ultimate Loco cab Ride from 0 Km/h to full 110 Km/h MPS [Maximum Permitted Speed] in Rajdhani Express locomotive EMD [Electro Motive Diesel] Locomotive GT46PACe from TKD [Tuglakabad] diesel loco shed WDP4B #40011 in LHF [Long Hood Front] mode with 12435 Dibrugarh Town - New Delhi Rajdhani Express. ====================================================== About an EMD Locomotive ------------------------------------------- The EMD GT46PAC is a passenger-hauling diesel-electric locomotive with AC electric transmission designed by General Motors Electro-Motive Division and built by both GM-EMD and under license by Diesel Locomotive Works (DLW) of Varanasi, India for Indian Railways as their classes WDP-4, WDP-4B and WDP-4D. The GT46PAC is a passenger version of the previous Indian Railways EMD GT46MAC freight locomotive. The locomotive has a 16 cylinder 710G3B diesel engine with a maximum speed of 904 RPM. ====================================================== Performance of WDP4B The WDP-4B which is a 4,500 hp (3,360 kW)126 t (124 long tons; 139 short tons) weighted loco with a single cab & capable of hauling 24 coach trains at 110–120 km/h (68–75 mph). It has got six traction motors and are Co-Co bogie equipped (more similar to WDG-4), unlike the original which has a Bo-1-1-Bo arrangement with four traction motors. Due to some controversies regarding visibility hindrances faced by loco pilots in driving long hood front, the basic WDP-4B model has been modified to dual cab to eliminate any such possibility. Other features of WDP-4B and WDP-4D are same. The cabs have a slightly wider profiles, to improve visibility. ====================================================== The loco is very fuel efficient and has minimal exhaust emissions unlike ALCO based locomotives, thanks to its 2 stroke high efficiency diesel engine. It is characterized by its loud horn, which can be heard for large distances around, and aircraft-like sound of its running engine. The use of the locomotives "long hood forward" has been criticised because the driver might have difficulty in seeing signals. This criticism has been rejected by Indian Railways. But the solution to this problem is to upgrade all WDP-4 and WDP-4B models from single cabins to WDP-4D models of dual cabins. _________________________________________________________________ -

This beautiful locomotive was built by John Heald of Rotorua, New Zealand. In this video we take the B-Class out for a typical day at the track, including a sequence of loading the engine onto a custom made trailer towed behind a Honda Jazz (Fit) with CVT. Then it's off to the beautiful River Edge Park Railway in Whakatane, New Zealand. We also take a look at stability of this remarkable locomotive under high speeds using on board cameras. Special adjustable Danly coil springs prevent the locomotive from porpoising; the leaf springs are dummy and just for show. Cab Ride - Inch Abbey to Downpatrick - A39 Diesel Locomotive
This video shows a cab ride from Inch Abbey to Downpatrick on the Downpatrick & County Down Railway in Northern Ireland, on 30th March 2013. The windscreen is a little bit dirty. I should have brought the Windolene with me! This run was the light engine returning from Inch Abbey after dropping off the buffet coaches at Inch Abbey, and runs to the station loop at Downpatrick to collect the coaches for the public trains. The locomotive starring in this film is ex-CIE 001 class / A class No. A39. Many thanks to the ITG and Downrail for their hospitality and help filming, especially the other star of this film, driver Johnny Bridle. -

This is a collection of steam locomotive trains of japan, mainly SL Yamaguchi, an engine model C571 steam locomotive train which runs through the unspoiled countryside between JR Shin-Yamaguchi Sta.(Yamaguchi) and Tsuwano Sta. The C571 is known as the nickname of “The Lady”, and its beautiful black solid iron body impress SL fans. Even if you are not a SL fan, your heart will beat fast when you see it coming as it giving off the steam smoke with the strong whistle. This is the opening sequence to a musical short film I developed independently in 2008 at the age of 23. It was conceived as a love letter to 1940s postwar Disney animation as well as the musical stylings of the Andrews Sisters. The music was composed by Tom Hambleton at Undertone Music in Minneapolis.
Animated in my spare time between 2009 and 2011, the project was shelved when I got hired at Disney Animation in the fall of 2011. The entire six minute film exists as a story reel with completed songs, but only this opening sequence made it to animation production. Many of the shots are missing effects, still have rough layout stand-ins, or didn’t make it to cleanup.
The project sat dormant from 2012-2015 while I animated on several Disney feature films. I recently made the difficult decision to cancel the project and retire the incomplete animation online. It is the creative authorship of a much younger filmmaker and its time has passed. I learned a great deal from this project and I’m eternally grateful for the insight, feedback, and contributions of everyone who helped me during its development.
With a heavy heart, I lay thee to rest, Linus!

The EMD GT46PAC is a passenger-hauling diesel-electric locomotive with AC electric transmission designed by General Motors Electro-Motive Division and built by both GM-EMD and under license by Diesel Locomotive Works (DLW) of Varanasi, India for Indian Railways as their classes WDP-4, WDP-4B and WDP-4D. The GT46PAC is a passenger version of the previous Indian Railways EMD GT46MAC freight locomotive. The locomotive has a 16 cylinder 710G3B diesel engine with a maximum speed of 904 RPM.

Performance of WDP4B
The WDP-4B which is a 4,500 hp (3,360 kW)126 t (124 long tons; 139 short tons) weighted loco with a single cab & capable of hauling 24 coach trains at 110–120 km/h (68–75 mph).
It has got six traction motors and are Co-Co bogie equipped (more similar to WDG-4), unlike the original which has a Bo-1-1-Bo arrangement with four traction motors. Due to some controversies regarding visibility hindrances faced by loco pilots in driving long hood front, the basic WDP-4B model has been modified to dual cab to eliminate any such possibility. Other features of WDP-4B and WDP-4D are same. The cabs have a slightly wider profiles, to improve visibility.

The loco is very fuel efficient and has minimal exhaust emissions unlike ALCO based locomotives, thanks to its 2 stroke high efficiency diesel engine. It is characterized by its loud horn, which can be heard for large distances around, and aircraft-like sound of its running engine.
The use of the locomotives "long hood forward" has been criticised because the driver might have difficulty in seeing signals. This criticism has been rejected by Indian Railways. But the solution to this problem is to upgrade all WDP-4 and WDP-4B models from single cabins to WDP-4D models of dual cabins.

This run was the light engine returning from Inch Abbey after dropping off the buffet coaches at Inch Abbey, and runs to the station loop at Downpatrick to collect the coaches for the public trains.
The locomotive starring in this film is ex-CIE 001 class / A class No. A39.
Many thanks to the ITG and Downrail for their hospitality and help filming, especially the other star of this film, driver Johnny Bridle.

This is a collection of steam locomotive trains of japan, mainly SL Yamaguchi, an engine model C571 steam locomotive train which runs through the unspoiled countryside between JR Shin-Yamaguchi Sta.(Yamaguchi) and Tsuwano Sta. The C571 is known as the nickname of “The Lady”, and its beautiful black solid iron body impress SL fans. Even if you are not a SL fan, your heart will beat fast when you see it coming as it giving off the steam smoke with the strong whistle.
SL yamaguchi is a retro flavored five coach train, and each of them are designed differently. It is recommended to reserve the observation coach when you head to Shimane from Yamaguchi. Another attractive part of this SL train trip is that you can see the SL train turn its direction on the turntable at the Tsuwano Station.
History of SL Yamaguchi
The Steam Locomotive Trains in Japan were put out of service from the end of 1960s, and Steam Locomotives on the Yamaguchi Line also disappeared in 1973. However, a lot of SL fans were eager to restore SLs, it was decided that the traction engine Model C571 would run on Yamaguchi Line again.

This is a collection of steam locomotive trains of japan, mainly SL Yamaguchi, an engine model C571 steam locomotive train which runs through the unspoiled countryside between JR Shin-Yamaguchi Sta.(Yamaguchi) and Tsuwano Sta. The C571 is known as the nickname of “The Lady”, and its beautiful black solid iron body impress SL fans. Even if you are not a SL fan, your heart will beat fast when you see it coming as it giving off the steam smoke with the strong whistle.
SL yamaguchi is a retro flavored five coach train, and each of them are designed differently. It is recommended to reserve the observation coach when you head to Shimane from Yamaguchi. Another attractive part of this SL train trip is that you can see the SL train turn its direction on the turntable at the Tsuwano Station.
History of SL Yamaguchi
The Steam Locomotive Trains in Japan were put out of service from the end of 1960s, and Steam Locomotives on the Yamaguchi Line also disappeared in 1973. However, a lot of SL fans were eager to restore SLs, it was decided that the traction engine Model C571 would run on Yamaguchi Line again.
