The Pocovic family are Serbian refugees, who fled their homes in Krajina during the Croatian War of Independence. We meet them and learn of their hopes to return home. The picture in Krajina is a desolate one - many homes abandoned, with current inhabitants living in basic and desperate conditions. Due to the struggles on both sides, the former neighbours of the Pocovic family are varied in their opinions on the Serbs' return - some are encouraging, while others are unwilling to forget and forgive.

The Serbs of Croatia (Serbian: Срби у Хрватској / Srbi u Hrvatskoj) or Croatian Serbs (Serbian: Хрватски Срби / Hrvatski Srbi) constitute the largest national minority in Croatia. There has been a substantial Serb population in Croatia since the Middle Ages, although the population has been declining.
Overview
Traditional elements of identity are the Orthodox faith, Cyrillic script and military history, while modern elements are language and literature, civic, social and political values, concern for ethnic status and national organisation, and celebration of the Liberation of Yugoslavia.
According to the 2011 census there were 186,633 ethnic Serbs living in Croatia, 4.4% of the total population. Their number was reduced by more than two thirds in the aftermath of the 1991–95 War in Croatia as the 1991 pre-war census had reported 581,663 Serbs living in Croatia, 12.2% of the total population.

Serbs
The Serbs (Serbian: Срби/Srbi, pronounced [sr̩̂bi]) are a South Slavic nation and ethnic group native to the Balkans. The majority of Serbs inhabit Serbia (including the disputed territory of Kosovo), as well as Bosnia and Herzegovina and Montenegro, and form significant minorities in Croatia, the Republic of Macedonia and Slovenia. There is a large Serb diaspora in Western Europe, and outside Europe there are significant communities in the North America and Australia.
The Serbs share cultural traits with the rest of Southeast Europe, and are predominantly Orthodox Christians by religion. The Serbian language is official in Serbia (also in disputed Kosovo) and Bosnia and Herzegovina, and is spoken by the majority in Montenegro.
Ethnology
The modern identity of Serbs is rooted in Eastern Orthodoxy and traditions. In the 19th century, the Serbian national identity was manifested, with awareness of history and tradition, medieval heritage, cultural unity, despite living under different empires. Three elements, together with the legacy of the Nemanjić dynasty, were crucial in forging identity and preservation during foreign domination: the Serbian Orthodox Church, Kosovo Myth, and the Serbian language. When the Principality of Serbia gained independence from the Ottoman Empire, Orthodoxy became crucial in defining the national identity, instead of language which was shared by other South Slavs (Croats and Bosniaks). The tradition of slava, the family saint feast day, is an important ethnic marker of Serb identity, and is usually regarded their most significant and most solemn feast day.

listen ), is a sovereign state at the crossroads of Central Europe, Southeast Europe, and the Mediterranean. Its capital city is Zagreb, which forms one of the country's primary subdivisions, along with its twenty counties. Croatia covers 56,594 square kilometres (21,851 square miles) and has diverse, mostly continental and Mediterranean climates. Croatia's Adriatic Sea coast contains more than a thousand islands. The country's population is 4.28 million, most of whom are Croats, with the most common religious denomination being Roman Catholicism.
The Croats arrived in the area of present-day Croatia during the early part of the 7th century AD. They organised the state into two duchies by the 9th century. Tomislav became the first king by 925, elevating Croatia to the status of a kingdom. The Kingdom of Croatia retained its sovereignty for nearly two centuries, reaching its peak during the rule of Kings Peter Krešimir IV and Dmitar Zvonimir. Croatia entered a personal union with Hungary in 1102. In 1527, faced with Ottoman conquest, the Croatian Parliament elected Ferdinand I of the House of Habsburg to the Croatian throne. In 1918, after World War I, Croatia was included in the unrecognised State of Slovenes, Croats and Serbs which seceded from Austria-Hungary and merged into the Kingdom of Yugoslavia. A fascist Croatian puppet state existed during World War II. After the war, Croatia became a founding member and a federal constituent of Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, a constitutionally socialist state. In June 1991, Croatia declared independence, which came into effect on 8 October of the same year. The Croatian War of Independence was fought successfully during the four years following the declaration.

Croatian wine
Croatian wine (vino, pl. vina) has a history dating back to the Ancient Greek settlers, and their wine production on the southern Dalmatian islands of Vis, Hvar and Korčula some 2,500 years ago. Like other old world wine producers, many traditional grape varieties still survive in Croatia, perfectly suited to their local wine hills. Modern wine-production methods have taken over in the larger wineries, and EU-style wine regulations have been adopted, guaranteeing the quality of the wine.
There are currently over 300 geographically defined wine regions, and a strict classification system to ensure quality and origin. The majority of Croatian wine is white, with most of the remainder being red, and only a small percentage is rosé wines. In 2010, Croatia ranked 30th in wine producing countries with an estimated 50,000 tonnes.
Wine is a popular drink in Croatia, and locals traditionally like to drink wine with their meals. Quite often, the wine is diluted with either still or sparkling water - producing a drink known as gemišt (a combination of white wine and carbonated water), and bevanda (a combination of red wine and still water).

The Pocovic family are Serbian refugees, who fled their homes in Krajina during the Croatian War of Independence. We meet them and learn of their hopes to return home. The picture in Krajina is a desolate one - many homes abandoned, with current inhabitants living in basic and desperate conditions. Due to the struggles on both sides, the former neighbours of the Pocovic family are varied in their opinions on the Serbs' return - some are encouraging, while others are unwilling to forget and forgive.

Kosovo police clashed with ethnic Serbians during an operation against smuggling, Wednesday, October 13. Clashes began after police raided a pharmacy and some shops allegedly tied to a smuggling ring. Serbs threw stones and other objects at officers while blocking the main road with trucks. Frontline soldiers on the Bosnian Serb side of Sarajevo said on Thursday (14/12) they would not give up their section of the city without a fight. In the trenches overlooking Sarajevo, they watched on television the signing of the Bosnia peace agreement in Paris. The soldiers don't want to stay when Sarajevo returns to full government --
Bosnian Muslim -- rule, a condition of the accord reached last month in Dayton, Ohio. In Serb-held Grbavica, the signing in Paris was viewed with concern. Most civilians also don't want to give up their
territory.

The Pocovic family are Serbian refugees, who fled their homes in Krajina during the Croatian War of Independence. We meet them and learn of their hopes to return home. The picture in Krajina is a desolate one - many homes abandoned, with current inhabitants living in basic and desperate conditions. Due to the struggles on both sides, the former neighbours of the Pocovic family are varied in their opinions on the Serbs' return - some are encouraging, while others are unwilling to forget and forgive.

Serbs of Croatia
The Serbs of Croatia (Serbian: Срби у Хрватској / Srbi u Hrvatskoj) or Croatian Serbs (Serbian: Хрватски Срби / Hrvatski Srbi) constitute the largest national minority in Croatia. There has been a substantial Serb population in Croatia since the Middle Ages, although the population has been declining.
Overview
Traditional elements of identity are the Orthodox faith, Cyrillic script and military history, while modern elements are language and literature, civic, social and political values, concern for ethnic status and national organisation, and celebration of the Liberation of Yugoslavia.
According to the 2011 census there were 186,633 ethnic Serbs living in Croatia, 4.4% of the total population. Their number was reduced by more than two thirds in the aftermath of the 1991–95 War in Croatia as the 1991 pre-war census had reported 581,663 Serbs living in Croatia, 12.2% of the total population.

As French K-FOR forces moved into the town of Vucitern, about 30 kilometres (20 miles) northwest of Pristina, ethnic Albanians cheered them on.
At the same time they kicked and spat at departing Serb civilians fleeing the province in cars and buses in fear of Albanian reprisals.
Serb police could only watch from the roadside as their countrymen left and the French soldiers moved in.
Soon they would be on their way too.

They accuse the current PM Aleksandar Vucic of trying to install a dictatorship. He recently won the presidential election with a landslide victory. Finances were tight for the 14-year-old Novak Djokovic and his family. So when he was approached by tennis agents and offered the opportunity to switch nationalities, play for England and alleviate some of the hardship on his parents, they seriously considered it. But Dijana Djokovic said she knew Novak would not play for England with his whole heart as he did for Serbia.

IFOR soldiers found themselves in the line of fire on Thursday (29/8) as Serb police in Mahala fired on a group of Muslim refugees who were trying to return to their homes. American troops of the NATO Implimentation Force were forced to take refuge behind armoured personnel carriers with the Muslims who had come under fire.
Earlier on Thursday, US troops detained 35 Bosnian Serbs, including police and officials after the Serbs attacked Muslims near the village of Mahala injuring 10.

Frontline soldiers on the Bosnian Serb side of Sarajevo said on Thursday (14/12) they would not give up their section of the city without a fight. In the trenches overlooking Sarajevo, they watched on television the signing of the Bosnia peace agreement in Paris. The soldiers don't want to stay when Sarajevo returns to full government --
Bosnian Muslim -- rule, a condition of the accord reached last month in Dayton, Ohio. In Serb-held Grbavica, the signing in Paris was viewed with concern. Most civilians also don't want to give up their
territory.
