A three-and-a-half mile, nearly three-hour swim through one of the most heavily polluted bodies of waters in the country can leave you feeling gross. "This is definitely the worst thing I've done in 20 years," said swimmer and clean water advocate Christopher Swain. He has plunged into dozens of polluted waters to raise awareness of the need for action, including the nearby Gowanus Canal. But he says the combination of sewage runoff and toxic oil in Newtown Creek was uniquely disgusting, especially the smell. "Poop, the smell of like chemicals that smelled like cinnamon toast, the fumes from gas and oil and there were some sulfur type of smells, too," he said. "I was ready for the gas and oil. I wasn't ready for as much of the visual reminders of the sewage as I got." Newtown Creek is t...

[May 3, 2016 Update: There have been no deliveries of food waste (bioslurry) to Newtown Creek WWTP since May 2014, when the 1-year pilot with the NYC Departments of Sanitation and Education ended. DEP, along with our partner, Waste Management, have been working to construct a larger system for a 3-year demonstration project, which will bring in more bioslurry than during the pilot. The demonstration project will assess the operational impacts of co-digestion of DEP’s sludge with organic food waste in the anaerobic digesters at Newtown Creek WWTP. The demonstration project by DEP and Waste Management is expected to begin operations in Summer 2016 and the organic food waste will come from residential and commercial sources.] A pilot project is underway at the Newtown Creek Wastewater Treatm...
For nearly half a century, members of DC 37 Local 2906 worked as crew on a boat that was more than a worksite to them - it was home. That boat is the Newtown Creek.
Newtown Creek / Greenpoint Oil Spill in New York City is the 3rd Largest Recorded Oil Spill in US History and appears to be ongoing. Simple solutions to monitor and detect oil and pcb contamination along with technologies to remove the oil from the water without impacting landfills is available now. Do the politicians in New York really want a solution and in the process of removing the oil from the water to create sustainable real green jobs? On behalf of the future generations, we hope so.
Motor boat charter in the Solent gets no better than a summer overnight stay in Newtown Creek. Our Princess 50 flybridge provides all the luxury, nature does the rest. Early morning slipping through the water in the tender listening to the birds singing and watching the world wake up. Sometimes you have to just sit there and soak up the world in all it's glory.
Imagine: Producing clean energy, improving air quality, and tackling climate change with…wastewater. The Newtown Creek renewable gas project in Brooklyn, NY will do just that. In our second Connect21 video, the NYC Department of Environmental Protection and National Grid tell a compelling story about converting biogas into renewable natural gas for residential and commercial use.

Newtown Creek is the a 3.8 mile waterway that runs between Brooklyn and Queens. It is one of the most polluted waterways in the country and is currently facing a long and complicated clean up process. Willis Elkins from the Newtown Creek Alliance samples the water every week to monitor the health state of this unique waterbody of New York.
The creek is a very active waterway with barges going in and out at all time serving the different manufacturing industries located on the creek's banks. In the future the clean up process will have to take into account the working identity of the creek and combine it with environmental needs.
The views from the creek are pretty impressive, almost metaphysical. Factories, refinery plants and bridges dot the creek's landscape. This is the impressive view of the new Kosciuszko bridge seen from below. Willis says that the old bridge is so deteriorated that during a storm small pieces of iron started to fall from the bridge.

I went to Tyler State Park in Newtown; however, the water was muddy and turbulent because of the previous rain (what a bummer). In the end, I had to change my game plan! I found the slow pools and managed to pull some fishes out of them. I finished the day with 64 Rock Bass (Ambloplites rupestris), 22 Redbreast Sunfish (Lepomes ...
