A three-and-a-half mile, nearly three-hour swim through one of the most heavily polluted bodies of waters in the country can leave you feeling gross.
"This is definitely the worst thing I've done in 20 years," said swimmer and clean water advocate Christopher Swain. He has plunged into dozens of polluted waters to raise awareness of the need for action, including the nearby Gowanus Canal. But he says the combination of sewage runoff and toxic oil in Newtown Creek was uniquely disgusting, especially the smell.
"Poop, the smell of like chemicals that smelled like cinnamon toast, the fumes from gas and oil and there were some sulfur type of smells, too," he said. "I was ready for the gas and oil. I wasn't ready for as much of the visual reminders of the sewage as I got."
Newtown Creek is the site of one of the largest oil spills in United States history; between 17 million and 30 million gallons of oil have leaked into the soil from processing facilities surrounding the water.
In 2010 the area was granted Superfund status by the Environmental Protection Agency, which promised a comprehensive cleanup. The creek is also home to the city's largest wastewater treatment plant, which Swain said only complicates the cleanup.
"Every time you flush a toilet in Lower Manhattan that gets piped to the Newtown Creek waste water treatment plant and when it's raining, they can't handle the load -- and it goes right in here and I swim right through it," he said. "We need to fix that."
During the swim, Swain collected samples he plans to share with science teachers.
Curious onlookers give him credit for his dirty work.
"I'm willing to freeze. I'm willing to swim in poop because I think unless someone puts themselves on the line, nothing changes," he said.
Swain isn't done with Newtown Creek yet. The creek actually has five estuaries. Swain only swam one on Wednesday and he plans to come back in January to complete the rest.

[May 3, 2016 Update: There have been no deliveries of food waste (bioslurry) to Newtown Creek WWTP since May 2014, when the 1-year pilot with the NYC Departments of Sanitation and Education ended. DEP, along with our partner, Waste Management, have been working to construct a larger system for a 3-year demonstration project, which will bring in more bioslurry than during the pilot. The demonstration project will assess the operational impacts of co-digestion of DEP’s sludge with organic food waste in the anaerobic digesters at Newtown Creek WWTP. The demonstration project by DEP and Waste Management is expected to begin operations in Summer 2016 and the organic food waste will come from residential and commercial sources.]
A pilot project is underway at the Newtown Creek Wastewater Treatment plant in Brooklyn, NY. The NYC DEP is joining forces with the NYC Department of Sanitation and National Grid NY to utilize biogas, a byproduct of the wastewater treatment process. Biogas is mostly made up of methane, which also happens to be the main component of natural gas. If the program is successful, it would be the equivalent of taking 19,000 vehicles off the road and will reduce annual greenhouse gas emissions by 90,000 metric tons. The demonstration project by DEP and Waste Management is expected to begin operations in Summer 2016 and the organic food waste will come from residential and commercial sources.]
A pilot project is underway at the Newtown Creek Wastewater Treatment plant in Brooklyn, NY. The NYC DEP is joining forces with the NYC Department of Sanitation and National Grid NY to utilize biogas, a byproduct of the wastewater treatment process. Biogas is mostly made up of methane, which also happens to be the main component of natural gas. If the program is successful, it would be the equivalent of taking 19,000 vehicles off the road and will reduce annual greenhouse gas emissions by 90,000 metric tons. Lady Luck 324' Tanker sunk 23 July 2016. Formerly The Newtown Creek. Decommissioned by the City of New York and sold to Shipwreck Park Inc. Main deck rests @105' and amid ship is 131' to the sand bottom. Schools of Spadefish are already moving on to the wreck as well as a couple sharks. Penetrations are possible with large spaces to explore. hopefully more video to come.. cant wait to dive her again!

Most of my fishing was done in the Neshaminy Creek at Tyler State Park, where I actually landed my "Sunfish Superfecta:" the Bluegill, Redbreast Sunfish, Green Sunfish, and Pumpkinseed. These four Species of Lepomis genus are the most common ones in and around Philadelphia! Additionally, I also landed a couple Rock Bass, a small Smallmouth Bass, a couple small Largemouth Bass, and two neat Yellow Bullheads! Overall, a very good day on the Creek!

I finally explored a little bit more of the Neshaminy Creek! I went to Tyler State Park in Newtown; however, the water was muddy and turbulent because of the previous rain (what a bummer).
In the end, I had to change my game plan! I found the slow pools and managed to pull some fishes out of them. I finished the day with 64 Rock Bass (Ambloplites rupestris), 22 Redbreast Sunfish (Lepomes auritus), 6 Green Sunfish (Lepomis cyanellus), 1 Bluegill (Lepomis macrochirus) (Bluegills are so rare in the Creeks around here!), and 2 Black Crappie (Pomoxis nigromaculatus).
No monsters, no new Species...but some new data at least! The video is long and noisy because of the dam. I was really thinking about posting it under unlisted for some friends; however, once again, I decided to leave it open for the public.
Therefore, here are the highlights for the catches:

6:45 -- Green Sunfish
8:15 -- Rock Bass
9:55 -- Redbreast Sunfish
