Storm Desmond was an extratropical cyclone and fourth named storm of the 2015–16 UK and Ireland windstorm season, notable for directing a plume of moist air, known as an atmospheric river, which brought record amounts of orographic rainfall to upland areas of northern Atlantic Europe and subsequent major floods.
In the United Kingdom the worst affected areas were centred on Cumbria, parts of Lancashire and the Scottish Borders. In Ireland the worst affected areas were in the Shannon River Basin in the west and Irish midlands.
Severe rain and some flooding was also being reported in Northumberland, north Wales and Yorkshire. Disruption from flooding, high winds, and damage to infrastructure led to the suspension of hundreds of rail services across the country, with the West Coast Main Line closed for several days due to flooding and a landslide. Sports fixtures were also cancelled and more than 43,000 homes across the north of England were left without power, as well as over 2,000 homes in the Republic of Ireland and around 700 in Wales.
A storm is any disturbed state of an environment or astronomical body's atmosphere especially affecting its surface, and strongly implying severe weather. It may be marked by significant disruptions to normal conditions such as strong wind, hail, thunder and lightning (a thunderstorm), heavy precipitation (snowstorm, rainstorm), heavy freezing rain (ice storm), strong winds (tropical cyclone, windstorm), or wind transporting some substance through the atmosphere as in a dust storm, blizzard, sandstorm, etc.
Storms generally lead to negative impacts on lives and property such as storm surge, heavy rain or snow (causing flooding or road impassibility), lightning, wildfires, and vertical wind shear; however, systems with significant rainfall can alleviate drought in places they move through. Heavy snowfall can allow special recreational activities to take place which would not be possible otherwise, such as skiing and snowmobiling.
The English word comes from Proto-Germanic *sturmaz meaning "noise, tumult".
Desmond may refer to:

Sat 5th December 2015 Storm Desmond arrived. This footage mainly at x8 speed taken by one of our on board cameras shows how the floods developed eventually trapping ourselves. The predicted severe weather started to have an impact. Among other issues, our local ambulance station became flooded, with the crew moving in to our base. Regional co-ordination of MR responses was scaled up and requests for flood related assistance started to come in. Welfare checks on residents of vulnerable properties, recovery of people daft enough to sink their cars, some responses with NWAS paramedics and a couple of transfers to hospital. During one rescue we recovered 25 passengers from a coach trapped in a landslide at Thirlmere eventually one of our own response Land Rovers became trapped. For more infor...

The full video from my session at the Runway Visitor Park on the 5th December 2015. During this day, Storm Desmond dominated the day and made for a few interesting movements and operations. During the storm, winds reached a peak of around 45mph! Due to the wind blowing perfectly into the Runway 23's directions, most aircraft got in without any issues, but a few put on a good show. This compilation shows various aircraft between 10am and 4pm during my time at the Viewing Park during Storm Desmond's high winds. Aircraft includes the Etihad, Cathay Pacific and Qatar 777, Eurowings A320, Emirates A380 making a spectacular landing/takeoff and G-WJAN 757-200 on its final ever departure. Taken 5th December 2015 at Manchester Ringway International Airport UK.

Stuart Robinson is a storm chaser. Just like St. Paul, he had a revelatory experience; however his was in the cinema, watching the blockbuster movie 'Twister'. Since then Stuart's attempted to 'intercept' 5 Hurricanes, and indeed on two of these trips he's actually made it into the eye of the storm. Now some two years since his last 'chase' Stuart is planning another adventure with his American colleague Roger Hill, arguably the world's most experienced storm chaser. With the weather patterns indicating a huge storm towards the end of September will these two storm junkies manage to navigate their way into the carnage to get their fix? At home Stuart keeps all this excitement and adrenaline largely under wraps. His long term girlfriend Alison is hugely under whelmed with his pastime. This...

This video is property of Train_PlaneHub, "RachaelMatt" 1080p HD! A rather blustery day at London's Luton Airport on Friday 4th December 2015. With Storm "Desmond" building momentum in the Atlantic the UK was set for a weekend of rough weather, but while the skies were relatively clear I thought I'd make the most of it and go and see what would show itself at Luton. Quite a few nice surprises turned up on the horizon. INCLUDES: Brand New Wizz Air A321, Wizz A320's, EasyJet A319's & A320's, Monarch A320, Ryanair 737's, Private Livery 737 and of course for Luton, plenty of private jets! Look out for Thomson's oldest Dreamliner G-TUIA undergoing some maintenance and engine runs and also a 767-200 on the apron. Amidst the private jets one which stands out like a sore thumb is Lewis Hamilt...
