Subsistence agriculture is self-sufficiency farming in which the farmers focus on growing enough food to feed themselves and their families. The typical subsistence farm has a range of crops and animals needed by the family to eat and clothe themselves during the year. Planting decisions are made principally with an eye toward what the family will need during the coming year, and secondarily toward market prices. Tony Waters writes: "Subsistence peasants are people who grow what they eat, build their own houses, and live without regularly making purchases in the marketplace." However, despite the primacy of self-sufficiency in subsistence farming, today most subsistence farmers also participate in trade to some degree, though usually it is for goods that are not necessary for survival, and may include sugar, iron roofing sheets, bicycles, used clothing, and so forth. Most subsistence farmers today live in developing countries. Although their amount of trade as measured in cash is less than that of consumers in countries with modern complex markets, many have important trade contacts and trade items that they can produce because of their special skills or special access to resources valued in the marketplace.

William Henry "Bill" Gates III (born October 28, 1955 in Seattle, Washington) is an American business magnate, computer programmer and philanthropist. Gates is the former chief executive officer (CEO) and current chairman of Microsoft, the world’s largest personal-computer software company he co-founded with Paul Allen. He is consistently ranked among the world's wealthiest people and was the wealthiest overall from 1995 to 2009, excluding 2008, when he was ranked third; in 2011 he was the wealthiest American and the second wealthiest person. During his career at Microsoft, Gates held the positions of CEO and chief software architect, and remains the largest individual shareholder, with 6.4 percent of the common stock. He has also authored or co-authored several books.
Gates is one of the best-known entrepreneurs of the personal computer revolution. Contact me: sol.fraley@gmail.com For the Dhaniram Family in the rural village of Nayrangpur, Nepal, Rice planting is an important yearly event, as it is in much of Asia. This extended family consists of some forty members living together as a unit managing the same farm land and sharing the sustenance it yields. At the beginning of the monsoon season each year the family devotes about three weeks of intensive collective-effort to plant the rice that they will rely on for an entire year. They use no tractor, in fact there is nothing motorized at all on their farm. The planting and harvesting of rice is, along with the blessing of fertile soil, sun and rain, accomplished entirely by hand and animal power. The subsistent agrarian activities that this family carries out are common across nepal and related in degrees of similarity to those found across Asia, they represent an instance of the present day state of an ancient cultivating tradition that has been passed on for many generations. One that has departed very little from it's origins, even as technology and machine production have brought dramatic and rapid changes to so many traditions around the world. As summer begins so does the wet season in Nepal. Parched land and dry irrigation channels fill with water once again as the monsoon commences. When water levels rise enough to flood the partitioned fields know as patties it is time to begin planting rice. First however the patties must be prepared by tilling and leveling to create a soft mud for the seed to grow in. Also the patty perimeter walls of packed soil must be maintained to control the irrigation and assure consistent soil elevation in each patty. Seed rice is spread thickly in designated patties covering just a small percentage of the total area to be planted in rice. There it sprouts for two to three weeks reaching an ideal height of 7 to 10 inches, at which point it is ready to be uprooted, bundled and then transferred to the other patties to be replanted with proper spacing of about 4" between plants. This process of planting rice however simple to describe, requires a great coordinated effort by the family. The "labor" of uprooting and replanting the rice shoots requires considerable motor coordination as well as physical endurance to be completed efficiently. It is truly a skill that must be developed just as the strength, flexibility and coordination required in various athletics must be. Likewise the preparation of the patties involves the skilled use of the "Patuwar" the "Nepali Hoe" which is something of a cross between the western hoe and a cutter mattock. It's use is versatile enough to eliminate the presence of the shovel on this farm. Preparation of the patties also relies on knowledge of animal husbandry, fodder gathered by hand with a sickle, and of course the technology of the plow which is fashioned by hand with simple carpentry tools to the specifications of time honored tradition. Furthermore protection from the environmental elements of intense heat, and sun as well heavy rains relies on the use of the "chatri" an umbrella (minus the handle) made from two layers of woven bamboo slats with leaves carefully layer in-between. -

For the Dhaniram Family in the rural village of Nayrangpur, Nepal, Rice planting is an important yearly event, as it is in much of Asia. This extended family consists of some forty members living together as a unit managing the same farm land and sharing the sustenance it yields. At the beginning of the monsoon season each year the family devotes about three weeks of intensive collective-effort to plant the rice that they will rely on for an entire year. They use no tractor, in fact there is nothing motorized at all on their farm. The planting and harvesting of rice is, along with the blessing of fertile soil, sun and rain, accomplished entirely by hand and animal power. The subsistent agrarian activities that this family carries out are common across nepal and related in degrees of similarity to those found across Asia, they represent an instance of the present day state of an ancient cultivating tradition that has been passed on for many generations. One that has departed very little from it's origins, even as technology and machine production have brought dramatic and rapid changes to so many traditions around the world.
As summer begins so does the wet season in Nepal. Parched land and dry irrigation channels fill with water once again as the monsoon commences. When water levels rise enough to flood the partitioned fields know as patties it is time to begin planting rice. First however the patties must be prepared by tilling and leveling to create a soft mud for the seed to grow in. Also the patty perimeter walls of packed soil must be maintained to control the irrigation and assure consistent soil elevation in each patty.
Seed rice is spread thickly in designated patties covering just a small percentage of the total area to be planted in rice. There it sprouts for two to three weeks reaching an ideal height of 7 to 10 inches, at which point it is ready to be uprooted, bundled and then transferred to the other patties to be replanted with proper spacing of about 4" between plants.
This process of planting rice however simple to describe, requires a great coordinated effort by the family. The "labor" of uprooting and replanting the rice shoots requires considerable motor coordination as well as physical endurance to be completed efficiently. It is truly a skill that must be developed just as the strength, flexibility and coordination required in various athletics must be. Likewise the preparation of the patties involves the skilled use of the "Patuwar" the "Nepali Hoe" which is something of a cross between the western hoe and a cutter mattock. It's use is versatile enough to eliminate the presence of the shovel on this farm.
Preparation of the patties also relies on knowledge of animal husbandry, fodder gathered by hand with a sickle, and of course the technology of the plow which is fashioned by hand with simple carpentry tools to the specifications of time honored tradition. Furthermore protection from the environmental elements of intense heat, and sun as well heavy rains relies on the use of the "chatri" an umbrella (minus the handle) made from two layers of woven bamboo slats with leaves carefully layer in-between.

Subsistence farming is challenged by soil fertility. Soil fertility is composed of the nutrients and minerals in the soil. The crops are reliant on these minerals and nutrients to grow healthy and produce good yields. Soil fertility can be reduced due to poor farming practices, over farming with single crops, and not replacing essential minerals and nutrients. According to the World Bank about 80 percent of Nepal's people live in rural areas and depend on subsistence farming for their livelihoods. in 2014 there were an estimated 6.2 million Nepali farmers living in rural poverty. Here is one farmer's story: "At times, it was difficult. We were only sustaining. Production was enough only for the family and could not be sold for household expenses. There was no money for children's education. This is the reason why I could not study." Khim Bastola grew up in the mountain areas near Pokhara, Nepal. As a child he needed to work on his family's farm instead of going to school in order to provide food for his family. How Lao farmers can benefit from agro biodiversity in the rice field
The Lao agricultural sector is largely based on subsistence farming. Upland rice farmers in Laos depend on agro-biodiversity resources, including native species of plants, animals and insects for food, income and medicine. However some species are now declining due to agriculture intensification and overharvesting, among other factors. Farmers and district officials in Phoukhout district participated in a Farmers Field School to enhance their and their community’s skills to conserve and sustainably use native resources, while ensuring adequate food, income and benefiting from agro-biodiversity. The Agro-biodiversity Project is a GEF / UNDP funded initiative, technically supported by FAO for the sustainable use and conservation of agro-biodiversity in Lao PDR.

The crops are reliant on these minerals and nutrients to grow healthy and produce good yields. Soil fertility can be reduced due to poor farming practices, over farming with single crops, and not replacing essential minerals and nutrients. In order to maintain or restore soil fertility there is reliance on chemical based fertilizers. Chemical fertilizers contribute to downstream water quality issues as well as a large cost to households. Alternative sources of nutrients and minerals can be used. There are several sources of natural fertilizers such as chicken manure, cattle manure, grey water, wood ash, green fertilizer (nitrogen rich plants are included into soil preparation before planting), nitrogen fixing plants, etc.
This video demonstrates how to make chicken manure as a natural fertilizer to improve soil fertility, in order to reduce reliance on and costs of chemical fertilizers.

Both cooperatives and NGOs have had fraught relationships with Ethiopia's political establishment, with cooperatives once perceived as an arm of the government and NGOs now seen as agents of foreign influence. The cooperative movement in Ethiopia emerged in 1950s, during an effort to transition from subsistence farming to commercial agriculture. Among households, 90% do not have access to safe water and improved sanitation (toilet facilities).[72% access to radio, and 94% have wood or charcoal for cooking.In terms of households' main sources of income, 52% derived it from subsistence farming, 13% from wages and salaries, 8% from business or non-farming, and 20% from pension.
A significant amount of fighting occurred in the region during the Namibian War of Independence. The home town of Okongo once served as the military point for the South African Defense Force (SADF).

OMUKUKUTU VILLAGE (Omukukutu wa Hamundjungu) Is situated in the northern part of Namibia.It has a total population of less than 300 residents. It is one of the less densely populated villages in Namibia considering its size. Agricultural and cattle farming (mainly Subsistence farming)are the main activities contributing to its local economy. The village is located in a picturesque tropical forest area and Tourists can experience the Oshikwanyama culture by visiting the village which also hosts an annual cattle festival (Omaludi). Although the region depends on rain fed agriculture, other crops can be established under intensive cultivation. The most commonly spoken language at home is Oshikwanyama.the literacy rate is 20%. unemployment in the Ohangwena Region in which the village is situated, stood at 34.6%. Among households, 90% do not have access to safe water and improved sanitation (toilet facilities).[72% access to radio, and 94% have wood or charcoal for cooking.In terms of households' main sources of income, 52% derived it from subsistence farming, 13% from wages and salaries, 8% from business or non-farming, and 20% from pension.
A significant amount of fighting occurred in the region during the Namibian War of Independence. The home town of Okongo once served as the military point for the South African Defense Force (SADF).
LEADERSHIP
Omukukutu village is headed by Joseph Nghede Hamutenya as its third headman after the late headman Zacharias Hamundjungu and Kondjashili Nopoudjuu Nopoimatapaanye Abisai yaPunda and it is ruled under the Oukwanyama traditional authority.

considerable invest invesissement. Due to the general poverty of the population
it is impossible to gather the necessary capital needed for industrialization.
When in certain cases the necessary capital exists they generally monopolize by
smallholders (the Grande landowners). Many refuse to transfer due to their
mentality, or due to the social prestige that the land ownership bring them or
due to the financial risk will bring for such new enterprise. The same goes for
those having personal or familiar capital. They do not like to be transformed from
capital holder to shareholders.
The acceleration of
development in many cases needed external capital investissement. This will
open to different forms of colonialism:-economic, political, social and
cultural.
